Fancy spending your gap year in the beautiful southeast coast of South Africa, with stunning beaches at your doorstep, and rewarding social development work to keep you busy during the week? Our South African Cultural Exchange programme is the perfect mix of fun and adventure with providing some real value to a local community who needs it.

Be a community legend on your gap year.

Whether it’s helping little pre-schoolers go about their day, or making sure that the elderly have a clean environment to live in, the work you’ll do in Kenton-On-Sea, the beautiful beach town outside of Port Elizabeth, will be hugely appreciated and respected by both the community members and workers.

Kenton-on-Sea will be your new home in South Africa, as you participate in one of our most important cultural exchange programmes. Situated on the spectacular coastline of South Africa’s southeastern tip, there are lots of gorgeous beaches where you can relax with friends and grab a cold beer after your day’s work is done. There are even two refreshing rivers where many of our programme participants love swimming to cool down in the evenings.

And with everything you need just a short walking distance away from your accommodation, you’re guaranteed a stress-free, easy transition into life in this seaside town.

Help Make A Measurable Difference In A South African Seaside Town

The South Africa Cultural Exchange Programme is the perfect opportunity to do something different and meaningful with your gap year. Don’t just spend your valuable time off getting so drunk that you don’t even remember what you did! Come home from your time abroad with irreplaceable memories, unparalleled travel and cultural experiences, and a new vision of the world. Spending time helping others is one of the most valuable and important things you can do during your gap year, and in life.

Our cultural exchange programme embodies a unique model of empowerment within the local community, enabling members to help themselves through enhanced economic, social, educational and environmental development schemes.

This rewarding programme will allow you to make a difference in a range of peoples’ lives, from toddlers taking their first vital ‘steps’ in life to adults looking to make a fresh start in education, and elderly members of the community who have more zest for life than you ever thought possible.

Through seven special programme features, you will gain valuable experience in a range of working environments and social development programmes. The areas where you will help the most are:

  • Feeding Scheme Assistance: Spend time seeing what it’s really like to work in a humanitarian aid setting, working in the soup kitchens to feed the vulnerable children of the area.
  • Early Education Assisting Help out in two preschools, playing with the little kiddies and teaching them valuable lessons.
  • Primary Education Assisting: Teach young kids some English skills, help the teacher in the classroom and grow with pride as you watch your kid’s progress.
  • Elderly Housekeeping Initiative: Make a tangible difference in the lives of elderly community members, by aiding with cleaning and spending valuable time getting to know them.
  • Homework Support: It may seem easy for you, but assisting kids with their homework will help to keep them focused, motivated and enthusiastic about education. This incredible support network also has a 100% success rate!
  • Youth Empowerment: Help young adults develop the skills to brighten their future. Using simple group exercises and helpful tools, you can help them to develop valuable business, leadership, entrepreneurial and social skills.
  • IT literacy: Help advance the community and bring important technological opportunities to the area by assisting in computer literary with primary school children.
  • Coastal Conservation Project: Undertake rewarding conservation work with the help of the fun and enthusiastic children of Kenton-on-Sea, as you clean up the coast and take part in important research of the wetlands.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

What are the three basic meals included in the price?
The meals are simple but delicious; cereal and toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and chicken stew with vegetables and rice for dinner. Programme participants must cook the meals in the house and clean up after themselves. External extra ingredients and meals are not included. Any special dietary requirements are not catered to, but most special dietary products can be found in the local supermarket.

How do I get to Kenton-on-Sea?
You will have to purchase flights to either Cape Town or Johannesburg, and then get a connecting national flight to Port Elizabeth, the nearest airport to Kenton-on-Sea.

What should I bring/pack?
Bring some light sweaters and long trousers if you are coming in the winter months (April to September), as the mornings and evenings can be quite cool but daytime is usually warm. The rest of the year can be very hot; so light clothing, summer shoes and swim gear will suffice.

  • Also consider bringing:
  • Water Bottle
  • Camera
  • Spare batteries
  • Sunglasses
  • Personal medical goods (there is a pharmacy in Kenton though)
  • Cards/CD’s
  • Sunscreen
  • Notebook/diary and pen
  • Hair dryer if you really need one
Should I bring anything for the children and community?
It is not necessary to bring anything from your home country. However, anything that you can provide will be greatly appreciated by everyone. For example, the local schools are always searching for stationary such as blackboard chalk, pencils, pens, writing books, erasers, paint brushes and paper, pocket calculators, colour pens, files, paper glue, rulers, playing balls, reading books or even old laptops. We understand that it may be heavy to travel with these extra items, and it is not compulsory at all, but if you believe you can bring anything, please do.

Will someone pick me up from the airport?
Yes, if you arrive on a Monday to Port Elizabeth Airport, between 08:00 AM and 15:00 PM. If your arrival flight arrives later than 15:00 PM, you will need to stay overnight in a hostel or B&B in Port Elizabeth. For departures from Port Elizabeth, you will be dropped off at the airport on any weekday after 10:30 AM.

How long is the programme?
There is a minimum stay of 2 weeks but there is no maximum stay. We definitely recommend combining two weeks of this with other activities such as our wildlife conservation project or doing a road trip through the garden route.

Is the programme open all year round?
No, the programme is closed for two weeks from 5th May to 19th May, and for two weeks from 6th October to 20th October. It is also closed for three weeks over Christmas and New Year (December 15th to January 5th).

How many days will I work on the Cultural Exchange Program?
Visitors to the cultural exchange programme work 5 days a week, with each activity planned in advance by your coordinator. You will have weekends free to spend as you wish; traveling, relaxing or more.

Are there any ATM’s in the area?
Yes, there are several ATM’s in Kenton-on-Sea that accept Visa or MasterCard. Travellers cheques and foreign currency is NOT accepted in Kenton-on-Sea, so must be changed before you arrive, or use your debit or credit card to withdraw money while you’re here.

Do I need any special vaccinations before I leave?
Maybe. Please check with your doctor.  A tetanus vaccination is the only recommended vaccination for traveling to South Africa. However it is not compulsory. No other shots or vaccinations are needed and the Eastern Cape area is entirely free from any tropical diseases and malaria.

Are there doctors in the area of Kenton-on-Sea?
Yes, the village has one doctor and there are more in Grahamstown and Port Alfred, both a short drive away. There is a small private hospital in Port Alfred and bigger ones in Port Elizabeth.
