Please note there are 2 variations of itinerary for the first 3 days. If you are working you will follow the Work Up Silver Itinerary, if you are not planning on working then you will be on the Wake Up programme.
Day Four to Eight – Goodbye Sydney, Hello Surf
By now jetlag should be a distant memory, but after four action-packed days and nights in Sydney you’ll probably be glad to have a break from the big city lights and lie on a gorgeous beach instead. Well, tough luck because you’re going surfing! You’ll be picked up right outside the Wake Up Hostel to embark on an amazing five day “surfari”, taking in two stunning locations on the east coast, where you can learn to catch the perfect wave by day and party by night – two typical Aussie pastimes.
Thanks to the all-inclusive style of the trip the only thing you need to bring is yourself – all surf equipment, accommodation and meals (except lunch on travelling days) is included. We even throw in that all important sun cream. By the time you arrive at the surf camp, your first stop, you’ll already have got to know your new mates on the coach, but if you are a bit shy don’t worry as there is no better icebreaker than beers and BBQ’s, not to mention falling off a surfboard!
The surfari takes you to Spot X, where you can enjoy the best beach parties and improve on your surf skills from the first couple of days. The expert instructors will really look after you, so there is no need to be nervous – just get in there and make the most of this amazing opportunity.
We guarantee that by the end of these five days you’ll be a surf convert and what better way to impress (and annoy) your mates back in cold Blighty? The tour ends in the cool beach side town of Byron Bay, where you can continue straight on with the next part of the tour, or take some time out to lounge on the beach, go snorkeling and explore the rainforests.
Day nine onwards – Flexibility!
A quick note here to point out that after the Surf Camp all of the sectors included in the Ultimate Australia Trip can be done at your own pace, allowing you to combine your travels with some work in-between, should you need to top up those funds. If you wish to complete the trip all in one go then you should allow for around 7 weeks, but you can take up to 6 months, which is highly likely once you get a taste of the Aussie lifestyle!
The hop on-hop off style Oz Experience bus can be booked a few days in advance for each of the following sectors.
Byron Bay to Rainbow Beach Sector
Byron Bay
This section of the trip begins with some time spent in Byron Bay, chilling out and soaking up the bohemian lifestyle. However, if that sounds a little too sedate for you then you can take advantage of the skydive that’s included in your trip – it might only take a few minutes to get from 11,000 feet to the ground but the adrenaline rush will last so much longer!
Nimbin (optional not included)
The day trip to Nimbin is the perfect antidote to too much excitement (is that even possible?!). After being picked up from your accommodation, the Grasshoppers bus will take you through the stunning scenery of Byron Bay to the famous town of Nimbin, Australia’s ‘alternative lifestyle’ capital. You’ll have around an hour to experience the hippie atmosphere and sample some special cakes before heading off to the explore rainforests and waterfalls, enjoy a pint in an historic Aussie pub and tuck into some food from the barbie.
It’s quite possible that you’ll get to see Koalas and Kookaburras during the trip, and that’s before the beer! Surfers Paradise The next part of the bus trip takes you from Byron Bay north to Surfers Paradise – aptly named due to the 3km golden sand beach, right on the Pacific Ocean. There is something for everyone here, so if you need another shot of adrenaline there is bungy jumping and jet boating, if you’re the sporty type you can enjoy the surfing and beach volleyball, whilst those in need of some relaxation can chill out on the beach or in the cafes and parks of the Northside or West Quay districts.
Brisbane
The next stop for the bus is the city of Brisbane, capital of the ‘Sunshine State’ of Queensland (but where isn’t sunny in Oz?). So, what can you expect here? A vibrant nightlife with the abundance of bars and clubs, a bit of culture at the City Hall and Parliament House and the chance to get up close with some of Australia’s most well known natives at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. There is so much indoor and outdoor stuff to do here that you’ll never be bored and being the biggest city in Queensland it can be a good place to stop off for some work.
Noosa
On the way from Brisbane to Rainbow Beach there is a stop off at the town of Noosa, to drop off old friends and pick up new ones. There is also a chance to have a wander around Wildhorse Mountain National Park, which provides some great photo opportunities of the gorgeous Sunshine Coast area – yet something else to make those friends at home envious about!
Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island
Rainbow beach is a must-stop place to pick up the Fraser Island 4 x 4 tour. This unique site, the largest sand island in the world, will blow your mind with its beauty – pristine white sand beaches, freshwater lakes and the world’s only sand-dwelling rainforest. This is definitely one you can tick off the ‘100 places to visit before you die’ list. Not only does the trip include two nights’ accommodation at Hervey Bay Backpackers, but also two nights camping under the stars, a chance to drive across the endless sands and the opportunity to meet some dingoes (human or canine – depends on who is in your group!) Back at Rainbow Beach you can indulge in some more close encounters of the animal kind (we’re talking marine life here) with the opportunity to feed the dolphins. Plus you can meet some new trip recruits at the Hervey Bay hostel stop.
Rainbow Beach to 1770 Sector
After pick-ups and drop-offs at Hervey Bay the bus continues on to the towns of Childers and Bundaberg, which are the ideal place to stop off and replenish your dosh by doing some fruit picking. It’s pretty hard work but well worth it to make sure you’ve got enough funds for extra activities and partying. However, don’t go too mad on the Bundaberg Rum, or Bundy as it’s known, otherwise that fruit picking will be twice as hard! The next opportunity for stopping off and chilling out for a few days is the gorgeous little seaside village of 1770. If you want to spend a bit of time relaxing on golden sands and dipping your toes in the crystal clear turquoise water of the Coral Sea, then this is the place for you. There is still a ton of fun activities coming up on the trip so make sure you recharge your batteries so you can make the most of it! 1770 to Airlie Beach Sector
Airlie Beach a highlight of the trip – the Whitsundays cruise.
The three night package here includes two nights at the cool Nomads hostel and one night/two days sailing, giving you the chance to experience these unbelievable islands – beaches, rainforest, unusual marine life and a party-to-remember. This will take you to Whitehaven beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!
Airlie Beach to Cairns Sector
Townsville
The beach theme continues in Townsville, where you’ll be staying at one of the best hostels, right on the gorgeous sand, or on stunning Magnetic Island just off the coast (own expense). This is the sunniest spot on the Queensland coast, so you can make the most of the outdoor activities – swimming, snorkelling, hiking, koala spotting or just chilling out with your mates. There is plenty going on at Base Backpackers and when it comes to night-time entertainment look out for the full moon parties – definitely something to remember (or not!).
Mission Beach
White sand beaches, lush rainforest and activities galore await you at the paradise hideaway of Mission Beach. A few days here can be as sedate or adrenaline filled as you choose and if you didn’t take advantage of the skydive option in Byron Bay, now’s your chance! You won’t get a better view of the area and long after you touch down on the ground your euphoria levels will still be sky high. Mission Beach is also home to the impressive Cassowary, a huge flightless bird with very big claws, a sharp beak and bad-ass attitude – you might not want to get too close, but they are certainly a sight to see.
Cairns Adrenaline Overload
You wouldn’t be in Oz if the last part of your ultimate adventure didn’t finish with a bang and that’s exactly what you get with the five night Adrenaline Overload tour! You’ll start by checking in to your accommodation at the Cairns hostel and getting to know your dorm mates in the bar before finding out from your guide exactly what you’ll be up to over the next few days.
Jungle Tour
You could settle in with a relaxing tour of the Daintree Rainforest, river cruise and visit to Mossman Gorge. The rainforest is unique in that it grows right down to the water’s edge and is one of the most complex ecosystems on earth, containing an abundance of Australian plant and wildlife, including the Idiot Fruit (honestly, we’re not kidding!). Ok, biology lesson over.
Tully River
If you’ve been a bit shy in getting to know your dorm mates then getting thrown around in an inflatable raft whilst being pounded with foamy water is the perfect way to break the ice! Your Tully River trip is a full day that includes hostel pick-up/drop off, BBQ lunch, highly experienced guides and up to 5 hours rafting, not to mention other activities such as rock jumping, rapid swimming and raft surfing. You won’t go home dry but you will be on a high!
Great Barrier Reef
You can’t visit Oz and not visit the world famous Great Barrier Reef, and as trips go the Passions of Paradise tour is the best on offer. Dates are flexible and there are daily sailings, so you can fit this in when you choose. You may have seen images of this amazing natural attraction in books or on TV, but nothing can prepare you for seeing it in real life – exotic marine life, colourful coral gardens and stunning views all around will take your breath away almost as much as the skydiving! If snorkeling isn’t enough for you, you could always use some of your hard earned cash (or the bank of mum and Dad!) to take a diving trip.
Finally
The minimum amount of time you need to complete this trip is seven weeks, although you can FastTrack your travel through sectors by jumping on a Greyhound (they also run Oz experience so you can use both services) which is ideal if you only have a short amount of time before college or university, but you can take up to six months if you want to make it more of a gap year – travel a bit, work a bit, etc.
One thing to remember is that drives are very long, Australia is enormous and the bus might not go every day, so double check the schedules and be prepared to supplement some of the Oz experience sectors with greyhounds if you are in a rush.
However you decide to do it this really is the trip of a lifetime and one that we think is a life changer – you might leave home a nervous, first-time traveler, but you’ll return a daring adventurer with more friends than you could have imagined!
Most people start in Sydney and then travel up the East Coast to Cairns, some people like to add in work and travel to their trip and they figure Sydney is a good place to look for work. For this reason we also offer the boomerang option which means after the surf tour you return to Sydney (instead of being dropped off at Byron Bay) where you can start to look for work. When you are ready to travel up the coast you then start your Oz experience Bruce pass and continue the journey once more. The boomerang option is a little bit more expensive because you will cover a much greater distance and require a more expensive Oz experience pass. Checked the prices tab for details. Please note we cannot upgrade you once you have booked so you need to notify us at the time of booking if you require the boomerang option.

“The minimum amount of time you need to complete this trip is six weeks, which is ideal if you only have a short amount of time before college or university, but you can take up to six months if you want to make it more of a gap year – travel a bit, work a bit, etc.
One thing to remember is that drives are very long, Australia is enormous and the bus might not go every day, so double check the schedules.
If time is really tight you can FastTrack your journey by using the Greyhound (your Oz experience pass is interchangeable with this).
Yes there will, although you may not be travelling with exactly the same people that the entire duration of the journey. You start off in a group during the Sydney arrival pack, everyone will have just arrived just like you. You then join a new group on the surf tour. From then on out you are on the Oz experience so you will be travelling with other groups as you complete the journey.
The East coast of Australia is very social, so don’t worry you will make loads of new friends guaranteed.
After the surf tour you will stay one night in a flash Packers in Byron Bay, this is where you will sit down at the travel desk and collect your vouchers for your remaining activities. This is also a great place to do your skydive, although many people also opt to do this in mission beach.
Your first eight days accommodation are already arranged for you, this lasts until Byron Bay at which point you are able to pre-book further accommodation or just see how you go. We recommend you play it by ear because your Oz experience guide can book accommodation as travel each day.
There is no need to take a lot of cash as there are ATM’s everywhere we stop. Payments can be done in cash or by card. during your arrival package assistance can be given the you to set up a bank account as well so you might want to transfer money into an Australian bank to save on international bank fees.
The amount of money you need depends on how long you go and if you wish to go out a lot etc.
Here we have listed some costs (prices are indication and may vary due to change in currency rates).
Dorm accommodation will cost about €10 to €15.
Meals are about €5 to €15, but you always have the possibility to cook in the big kitchens of the hostels. This is also a fun way to get to know other people. You will be cooking side to side, most people make spaghetti
Drinks: a beer will be €2 and wine will be about €3 to €5. But there are always lots of backpacker bars and happy hours. We know what you like.

A Week You Will Never Forget
The itinerary is structured to make sure your first week down under is jam packed with the best activities Sydney has to offer. What’s more, accommodation and many meals are included, along with great company and dedicated expert guides for practical support and, of course, to help you milk the most out of every experience along the way.
Meet Your Mates On Monday
Straight from the plane you drop into the Xtreme Gap base in Sydney, where you’ll meet up with all the other arrivals. For many this is the start of long friendships, that last for the duration of Gap time in Oz and beyond, so it’s super exciting to see everyone meet.
You’ll get an introductory session from your guides, who’ll let you know everything about the practicalities of being in Oz and what you can expect from the first week with us in Sydney. It’s low-key and fun, and everyone’s excited to get going, but before we do, you’ll also get all the arrival admin out the way. This is sorted by us before you get here and includes bank cards, mobile SIMs and tax numbers; all the requirements to set you up for your stay in Oz, beyond your Sydney experience.
From here it’s straight into the city, for a full and comprehensive tour of all the major sights. You’ll see all the fantastic architecture of the Sydney Harbour – from the iconic Opera House, to the formidable steel curves of the Harbour Bridge. Then, it’s on to the Royal Botanical Gardens, where the multitude of Australian fauna blooms in the shadow of the city’s looming skyscrapers.
In the night, you can unwind with a meal and a drink on us, getting to know your fellow travellers late into the Australian night.
Explore Sydney On Tuesday
After an early start, the Xtreme Gap crew give the whole group a comprehensive introduction to all the ins and outs of working and living in Australia. These guys really are in the know, with first-hand experience of Gapping in Oz, so they have all the answers for what’s what when it comes to setting up camp here.
Afterwards, the focus of Tuesday is all about adventure and exploration. We’ll take you on a Harbour cruise to show you the city sights from a whole new perspective and we’ll delve deeper into the New South Wales cityscape by adventuring to Fort Dennison (a prison-cum-lighthouse glowering over the bays downstream from the Sydney harbour), Luna Park and Watson’s Bay in Woollahra (where the sandstone cliff peninsulas jut dramatically into the ocean).
In between seeing the sights you can swim in the warm waters of the coastline that straddles the harbour, take photos, or just chill in the Sydney sun as you please.
‘Wildlife and Wild Land’ On Wednesday
Wednesday sees us get out of the metropolitan centre of Sydney and into the New South Wales wildlife. The Xtreme Gap basecamp is an area of 6 acres, covered in rich rainforest fauna and home to a myriad of very Australian critters. We set off early from town, to let you get the most of this different setting, where you’ll stay for the next three days and two nights.
Relax in the day in the company of Josie the Kangaroo, or go wildlife spotting to try and catch a glimpse of some koalas, echidnas or possums in the forest, or dolphins and whales in the nearby coastline shallows (the sea is just 5 minutes’ walk from the basecamp!).
After an evening swim watching the Aussie sun dip below the horizon, it’s pizza night at the basecamp!
‘Thrilling’ Thursday
We start Thursday with some adrenaline pumping sand boarding in the nearby dunes. We get up in the 4x4s and ride back down again, so there’s no dune here too high to conquer!
After everyone’s had their fill, it’s of for an adventure filled ‘bush walk’, guided by the Xtreme Gap crew. There’s loads of wildlife to see, and the walk ends on one of New South Wales’ best lookout spots, where there’s a chance to take photos and go Koala spotting (here, families are observable the entire year round!).
Then, as the sunlight fades and night creeps in, we light the BBQ in true Aussie fashion, and chill out around the camp fire into the early hours.
‘Party Boat Cruise on Frickin Awesome’ Friday
Friday’s a real high-point. The Xtreme Gap crew launch our very own boat and everyone gets up close and personal with the
rich marine life of the New South Wales seas.
Aside from the ‘bucket list beating’ dolphin spotting (when you’ll also have a chance to sit in the boom net while dolphins glide through the water below you), it’s also possible to spot whales in the water here.
The bonus here is that you’ll be on board your very own private boat, with just your guides and fellow gappers as company. We’re in full control of where we go, and we can explore the waters as we please; there really is no better way to experience this amazing place.
After the cruise we depart for Sydney and arrive at the highly rated WakeUp hostel. With a central location and a great selection of nightly entertainments, it’s a great way to get back into ‘city mode’ and enjoy the Sydney night in style.
‘Shindig’ Saturday While the day time may all be about chilling and getting some hard earned rest, the night time is about donning your dresses and brushing up nice. We meet in the early evening at one of the city’s best bars, where backpackers and locals enjoy the famous Australian beers, and gear themselves up for a night on the town.
From here, we get hedonistic on the Xtreme Gap Sydney Pub Crawl. With entry and drinks at 4 bars and clubs included, you’ll experience all the facets of nightlife that has made this city so famous.
‘Slow down, Surf’s up’ Sunday
Where better than to coax away those hangovers and unwind than the soft-sanded white beaches of Sydney? On Sunday we’ll
transverse some of the most famous coastline in the Area, visiting six along the way. From the wide yellow stretches of Coogee, to the famous surf-swells of Bondi, this is among the most coveted beach territory in the world, and today it’s all yours!
Most people opt to start their Oz travels between October and March, as this is when you’ll get the best weather, and Sydney really is fantastic at this time of year. That said, there’s something to be seen here all year round, and the Xtreme Gap Sydney arrival package is a no-holes-barred, full-frills introduction to Gap Years in Oz, with the added bonus of a great bunch of like-minded travellers and fun-hungry tour guides ready and waiting for you in one of the country’s most endearing of cities.
Accommodation
You will be staying in downtown Sydney in the wakeup hostel, voted one of the best hostels in Australia, and consistently hitting the top of trip advisor.
The wakeup hostel is an awesome place to be located as everything is on your doorstep including our team who have their offices based directly in front of where you’ll be staying.
That means you can pop in there at any stage, access their free Internet (kind of handy in Australia is everywhere tends to charge you) but also you’ll be staying in one of the swankiest hostels in Australia.
There are loads of facilities available at the wakeup hostel, good chill out areas, comfy beds and safe and secure rooms. Is also slap bang in the middle of backpacker district, which means it’s really social, and everything is on your doorstep.
No you don’t, we have thousands of jobs in our database all over Sydney and they are constantly updated. You will remain in touch with the job team and they will be up to assist you in finding work all over the country. Work and travel made easy!
There is no minimum amount of time you need to remain there, it’s very flexible and you can even leave and re-enter the country’s many times as you like. That means if you’re only planning on going for three months you can still book this trip, having an awesome first week and pick up casual work as you go.
You have to fly in before 10 PM. If you arrive later we still can instruct you how to get to the hostel, but you need to pay locally. However we will refund you, just keep your ticket and give it to us the day after arrival when we all meet up!
No way! Actually most of our customers travel on their own and this program is by far the best and easiest way to make new friends and meet new people soon as you arrive. Everyone is in the same boat new arrivals into Australia and all feeling a little bit bewildered. Do not worry though because on Monday when you meet up with everyone and meet your awesome group leaders will be put right to ease and shown some the most amazing things this cool city has too offer.
If you enter this program there is no reason why cannot get a job very quickly. We have literally thousands of jobs available all throughout the country, and they are all geared towards working holiday Visa holders. It takes a special type of position to be suitable for people on working holiday visas, you are not allowed to work for one employer for more than three months so there are a wide range of jobs available and this is very handy to have a membership of our exclusive job finding service. You can go into the office any time to discuss what kind of job you need, and you can access the online database of jobs from anywhere in the country. You get 12 months membership access.
Not only is our Sydney connection a full-blown intro week we get to meet loads of people, turn on your social life from day one but we also have a fantastic award-winning jobs package as well. We have a dedicated team who actively hunt for backpackers jobs and can apply to these jobs for you. You also get access to travellers at work Australia’s largest online jobs database for backpackers, & the membership lasts one year. Travellers at work have jobs all over Australia not just in Sydney, so you can use this as you are travelling up the East coast or throughout the country. Jobs do tend to be relatively short-term in their nature as they are backpacker jobs, but that just adds to the fun of work and travel. You never know where you’re going to end up or what you will be doing or who you will be meeting.
We are often asked if it is possible to get a job prior to arriving in Australia, and the simple answer to this is no. You need to be on the ground and available for interview and keen to attend to secure those jobs, but it really does help that you have a dedicated team in Sydney backing up hunting for those exclusive jobs for you.
Sydney is by far the best place to start your Australian adventure. It is the economic powerhouse of the country, and it is one of the best places to live in the world. We have plenty of further information about Sydney on our blog so feel free to check it out, the information covers all sorts of things like reviews of the activities, what it’s like to live in Sydney and plenty of other useful information.
Yes it is, in order for you to know exactly where the best places are and do the best things available to you in Sydney, we have a couple of awesome group leaders who will sort you out and make sure you have the best time possible.
You have to be between the ages of 18 and 30 and be a national one of the participating countries in the Australian working holiday visa system. If you’re from the UK then this is absolutely no problem providing you have not already applied for one in the past.
Know the working holiday Visa is not covered in the cost of the trip, you will need to apply for one prior to entering Australia, the cost varies but this usually about hundred and £120.
Most people arrive on the Sunday, there is included airport transfer with this trip, so you make your own way to the hostel but this is prepaid for (you will be issued with a voucher before you arrive allowing you to jump on a bus dropping you straight at your accommodation). The arrival transfer does not take long, and you will check-into the hostel in your own name before meeting the rest of the group on Monday.
Exclusive to Xtreme Gap Year we have a travellers network that enables you to chat to other members of your group before you leave online. You get access to this once you have made your final payment 12 weeks before you go.
That is no problem we can book you in open dated, you just need to confirm with our team in Sydney before you arrive the likely date you’ll be joining.
Yes there are certain dates where this trip does not run, these tend to be during the major events in Sydney like New Year’s Eve, Christmas and a few select other dates contact us if you want to know the dates.
Yes absolutely, it’s quite easy to set up a bank account by mobile phone Sim card and arrange all the essentials yourself, however this does take quite some time to arrange, as you physically have to visit banks and do all the organising yourself. The beauty of this trip is that we take all the hassle out of arranging all staff meaning you can devote your first week in Sydney to just having fun making friends and kick starting your trip in the best way possible. The other majorly cool thing about this is the friends that you make, everyone is in the same boat and often lifelong friendships are formed in this first week, it’s not uncommon for people to end up travelling with other members of the group and the feedback we get from our previous groups shows that this is much more fun than just turning up in Sydney and doing your own thing.
Simply fill in your booking form and put down your hundred pound deposit, then your space is guaranteed, the final balance of the trip is payable 12 weeks before you depart give you plenty of time to save flights and spending money.
Other than giving you an amazing first week and access to jobs on tap. This trip is great for enhancing your CV with work experience. Whilst many people may struggle to explain away travel to future employers, it shows that you have self-reliance and ability to be responsible for yourself as you travel. It shows motivation and actual practical work experience as well. It takes some guts to up sticks and move to another country, but with the help of this program you can demonstrate you are more than capable of taking on the challenge.
If you're serious about going to Australia on a working holiday Visa we believe this trip is essential for you.
We will find you a backpacking job quickly and take the hassle out of looking for one. In fact it will sort you out for the entire year in Australia.
There are lots of amazing activities included and as the trip is guided with a fun group you will meet people and have a great time.
It represents excellent value for money, and it's a great way to be able to afford to travel throughout this massive exciting country.
It's hasslefree, as everything is taken care of for you, from accommodation, bank accounts, tax file numbers tax rebates, job support, free hospitality training programs and an incredible itinerary as well.
With dolphin cruises, sand boarding, beach tours, Harbour cruises in an exclusive catamaran, and included nights out with some meals and all accommodation.

“Too many highlights to list, the Sydney harbour cruise was amazing we had such a big party, the boat was awesome and we found some chilled beaches with Sydney is the backdrop. Located in the stunning Whitsundays, the jewel in the crown of Australia’s east coast natural attractions. This is your opportunity to enroll on the 23 day Australia gap year internship which will see you LEARN on a VESSEL in NSCV, (National Standards for Commercial Vessels). Once qualified and in a job you can earn up to $500 a week to spend your days and nights sailing in one of the worlds most beautiful marine parks, living on multi million pound yachts and getting paid for your efforts. The training is loads of fun as you learn whilst cruising in a marine park with crystal clear waters and incredible beaches. This is not an advanced course as training to be a skipper/master of a vessel does require ongoing experience and training. This is a fantastic way to start a career in the marine industry.

Itinerary
The course consists of four components. The course is for novices so don’t worry if you have no previous experience of sailing.
Starts each Monday, departing Abel Point Marina at 9:00am.
Week one:
Training takes place on our NSCV (National Standards for Commercial Vessels) registered boat, where you will live aboard for five nights and six days, undergoing theory and practical application, while sailing around the Whitsunday Islands. Includes: All meals on board, course notes, tuition, snorkelling instruction and equipment, marine and national park fees, training record log books and certificates.
Weeks two – three:
Twelve nights on sailing tours, comprising of six, two day two night, Maxi Sailing tours around the Whitsundays as an extra crew member aboard our charter yachts. Trainees will be rostered on the yachts and get to work with professional crews, reinforcing the theory, plus learning other customer service aspects of working on charter yachts.
Plus -
Six nights backpackers dorm/shared accommodation in Airlie Beach to be used for nights in between tours when not at sea.
The programme is specifically tailored and managed all the way through from Day 1 to Day 23.
With an additional two weeks of consolidation training specifically to practice the theory/skills learned from the first week, the programme is geared towards getting the participants ready to work on the ultra high specification Maxi yacht favoured in the Whitsundays.
The first week is undertaken on a smaller yacht, learning the basics in a safe environment before moving to the Maxi yachts. Weeks two and three take in all the other aspects of working on the Maxi, including managing guests, snorkelling watches, guided island walks, re-provisioning, turning vessels and refuelling. On this programme you will receive two full crew uniforms, and six nights accommodation in Airlie Beach. This is a fully managed programme from day one, our team will manage the 23 day schedule for you: rostering on the yachts, booking in accommodation and dealing with operational aspects for the participants.
Man, that cup of coffee will taste good in the morning as you watch the sun rise over the ocean…
All of the different courses start in Airlie Beach at Abel Point Marina. This is where you will receive a comprehensive orientation and safety briefing prior to heading out into the tropical waters for your training.
This certificate gives you the skills to command your own PRIVATE vessel. The International Crew Certificate and documents (IYT) requires a local payment of AUD$100, not included in the price.
Note: If you already have sailing certificates, we can adjust the programme for you.
Finding work after the course
For those taking the 23 day course, you will be set up with an interview upon successful completion of the course. We do not guarantee employment, however if you come through the programme and stand out as excellent, employment prospects are almost certainly employed immediately. 60% of travellers that start the course will get offered a job on one of our own boats. Many more will be employed by other sailing and tour companies in the Whitsundays, as once the course has finished you are free to apply for jobs with any company. Most will be each company for around 3 months. Sometimes you have to wait a week or 2.
Some who start the programme do not complete the programme because they find the work too hard or sailing is not for them. We limit the number of guests starting the programme to approximately 70 a year, so there are not too many looking for work.
What does the job include
The job typically includes most accommodation and food, and you can be paid up to $500 a week. Imagine spending your time cruising one of the worlds most beautiful locations and have no living expenses and getting paid!
Many gap year students end up working for a few months, saving up a boat load of cash and then travelling further.
Who joins?
The sailing course is open to anyone over the age of 18. It is perfect if you are seeking a career in marine tourism (read living on various cool yachts, sailing the around one of the world’s best marine parks in the eternal sunshine of Australia!). You do not need any prior experience f you want to join the full 23 day course.
Accommodation
During the course you will be spending five days a week on the boat you are training on in shared (two persons) accommodation. You will be staying with someone of the same sex, unless you are a couple of course!
During the weekends you will stay in a nice hostel in Airlie beach. A young and vibrant little town, with plenty going on for when you are not working.
Yes and no! Work on the commercial charter yachts can be pretty tough: provisioning the yacht, assisting guests, assisting with cleaning, working the decks, assisting the cook. However, if you are energetic and don’t mind getting involved, you will love it.
On the course all meals and linen are provided. All you need to bring is your swim gear, sun screen, clothing, a hat and sunglasses. As you will be spending the entire day on the water, you better also bring a t shirt with long sleeves so not to get sun burnt. When you are going in the Australian autumn or winter, you might need a jacket too.
No, but then again all of the Xtreme Gappers that did this course were offered a job. You would have to fail the course (which is highly unlikely) or be very anti-social with terrible interpersonal skills not be offered a job, or you are unlucky and be there in a quit season/time. At the end of the day it is in your interest to pass the course, and there are jobs out there. This really is the gate way to the best backpacker job in Australia.
If you wish to continue work in the industry your logbook is enough proof of education. You will need to continue getting this signed off as you work, this is proof of on-going training and/or experience also. The log book is a legal document. An international certificate as such is not existent, you need to present your logbook.
This is not an advanced course as training to be a skipper/master of a vessel does require ongoing experience and training. This is a fantastic way to start a career in the marine industry.
By taking this course you are given priority for when jobs arise in the fleet. There are other shorter courses on offer providing similar qualifications. However, anyone who has done a sailing course on a small boat (say 25 to 45ft) would soon quickly realise that working on a Maxi is a whole new ball game. The rigging is different, the loads are different, you have coffee grinder winches, multiple winches working together and these yachts can really cause harm if people are not familiar, trained and experienced. This programme gives you experience on the big yachts and greatly increases your employment prospects.
When you head out from Europe to do the Whitsundays as your first Australian adventure, the best place to fly into is Cairns or Brisbane. You can take the bus to Airlie Beach, around 600km from Cairns and 1,100km from Brisbane. Check out the Oz Experience bus pass and see some of Australia on your way…..When you are already in Sydney there are two options. The fastest is to fly from Sydney via Hamilton Island to Airlie Beach (around 120GBP one way). Airlie Beach has only got an airport for internal flights. For your information Sydney to Airlie Beach is around 1,900km.
The Australian Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 costs around £170, which is the equivalent of €215. Rates change constantly so use this only as an indication. Furthermore you need to have around £2,000 in your bank account when you enter Australia with a Working Holiday Visa. You will apply for a visa before you go and will do this online at the website of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of the Australian Government.
Yes, you can undertake the 23 day programme. If you do not have a Working Holiday Visa, you cannot apply for a job with us at the end of the course. Some guests have done this course because they saw it as a good way to spend three weeks.
Unfortunately we are not affiliated with the RYA, so we would not employ someone with any of the RYA qualifications, for example the RYA Day Skipper Qualification. So, in order to be able to obtain a job with us you have to do the course.

Help with finding work after the course
After your three months of training, it will be time to find work if you want to. Work is not guaranteed but the chances are good. You will then be able to teach others to learn to surf and earn money by working on the beach and in the ocean! Job assistance is provided in Australia, but your qualification is internationally recognised, you can take it with you and earn more on your onward travels, previous Xtreme Gappers have gone onto Fiji, Bali, New Zealand and some have returned to the UK to teach.
But I have never surfed before…
You can start the surf instructor course at any level even without surf experience. You do have to love the sea, because this will be your classroom and you will have to surf a lot, but hey its fun!
The last month involves a lot of coaching skills.
This qualification enables you to work as a surf instructor in Australia. Perfect for a working holiday spent on the beach! If you do not wish to become an instructor but just want to surf a lot… Have a look at our Surf Dude Course in Australia.
Extra activities when not in the water.
You will be having surf lessons five days a week, at least four hours a day, but in your free time there is also other stuff to do. Take time to get to know the crew, get involved in the games and activities. Experience kayaking, skydiving, music around the camp fire and much more. On the beach can be as exciting or as relaxing as you like. We travel with volleyball equipment, footballs and other fun stuff. The surf academy is also a very social place, as alongside the surf instructor programme it is also a main stop for Oz Experience buses, meaning every week hundreds of backpackers stop by and yes, it can be a bit of a party!
If you are looking for a little peace and quiet, you have a surf house away from the riff raff to hang out and chill with other academy students. There tends to be seven to ten students training at anyone time, so you always have friends to hang out with.
Meals
Three times a day you will have the best fresh and healthy food you could wish for. Surfing makes you hungry. In the mornings there will be cereal, milk, fresh fruit, toast, jam, Marmite etc. For lunch there will be all kinds of salads, beans, meat, spaghetti and in the evenings there will also be fresh salads, pasta, meat, rice, desserts you name it! All freshly prepared for you!
Accommodation
Set in a beautiful surf spot in a National Marine Park, this is a unique opportunity to spend time in one of Australia’s most beautiful coastal areas. You be living in a beach front cottage with other surfers. The secluded beach is situated between Sydney and Byron Bay.
There will be short term surfers here and others like you training to become a surf instructor. It is a good and safe community and everyone is supportive and open to meeting new people. There is a nice communal area, camp fire area, free coffee and tea and a big TV room where you can chill if you wish.
To become a surf instructor you will need a basic and competent level of surfing ability, although admittedly you do not have to be an expert. Much of the “skill” is gained through practice, a lot of which you will obtain on this course. The academy is designed to produce competent surfers in three months that have the skills to complete certification requirements, or become an intermediate level surfer. We have our best coaches working with the students every day which provides a high level of one on one attention. This allows them to improve their surfing in a short amount of time. We use techniques such as video and photo assessment, class room theory, surf fitness, water safety awareness, and countless water time in a concentrated form to ensure we achieve our outcomes. All this takes place in our own surf camps with access to the best waves in all conditions. Our academy is a truly unique experience.
No, you will not be with the same group all the time. Because some people just do the five day surf camp, some stay a month, others two (surf development courses) and some three months like you. As the trip starts frequently people come and go. However the instructors are the same and with surfing you make friends very easily! Soon you will find your way and make friends for life!
It is very likely that you will find a job after you have finished the course. 90% of the population of Australia live by the coast and there are surf schools everywhere. Our partners help you to find a job, but it is not guaranteed. It also depends on your own willpower too. If you really want it and go for it, you are very likely to find a job. In cause it does not work out with finding a job as a surf instructor, there are plenty of other jobs available.
Yes, you can join our Surf Instructor Course without applying for an Australian Working Holiday Visa. You will get your worldwide accepted certificate after finishing the course successfully, but you are not allowed to start working in Australia after you have finished the course. Remember that you cannot apply for a Working Holiday Visa when you are in Australia. You need to do that before you go. So, please think about this carefully.
The Australian Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 costs around £170, which is the equivalent of €215. Rates change constantly so use this only as an indication. Furthermore you need to have around £2,000 in your bank account when you enter Australia with a Working Holiday Visa. The Ultimate Once In A Lifetime Round the World Trip. Why Compromise?
Warning! At some point in your life you will be old. Fact. Potentially a bit boring too and crushed under the responsibility of kids and a mortgage and most likely a boss who is an utter dickhead. When your kids ask you what you did in your lifetime, what will you tell them? Our answer? Everything and then some. You only live once, so do that. Really. LIVE. This is the Xtreme Gap answer to office hours filled with boredom, to strip lighting and angry bosses. So here is what you are in for:
You will begin in Bangkok, what a beginning to an incredible adventure. Your time in Thailand will pan out differently depending on if you opt for 1. The Thailand Adventure (more cultural and softer) or 2. The Koh Tao Adventure, bith 4 weeks full of activities.
On the Thailand Adventure are in for some incredible activities like volunteering with Elephant Mahouts for a week, jungle trekking and popular cultural immersion projects. and your last week will be on Koh Tao.
The Koh Tao Adventure is everything Xtreme, you can learn Muay Thai Kick boxing the national sport, or become a freediver, rock climber and complete our kick ass adventure day. Plenty of chill time and night life on the gorgeous paradise island of Koh Tao. If you like action and party, this is your best pick!
After 4 weeks in Thailand it is time to hit Laos. Stunningly beautiful and packed with fun adventures like the world famous river tubing. Laos is accessed from Bangkok so no need to book further flights. You jump on a hop on hop off pass called the Tom Yum, or you can opt to include Cambodia as well on a Mekong pass or Cambodia and Vietnam on the Lot pass (extra costs apply).
Arrival into Australia is pretty action packed, Jet Boating through Sydney harbour is the only way to see Sydney in our opinion (check the video section for why). This is just the the start of a very epic adventure, over the next few months (8 weeks to 12 months – up to you) you will be travelling the east coast, surfing, jumping out of planes, navigating raging thundering rivers, off roading on sand islands, exploring marine parks, drinking a lot in Australia vibrant cities, meeting new people and generally having a massive laugh. You can work if you want to on a WHV (we have lots of options you can bolt on to assist with this), or just go hell for leather having the time of your life.
After Australia it is time to explore one of the most beautiful countries in the world. A Flexible hop on hop off pass taking in both north and south islands. But that is not all, we have some but clenching adrenaline activities for you in Queenstown, 5 days full of adrenaline activities including a skydive!
Eventually it will be time to leave the southern hemisphere, onwards to the USA for an incredible American adventure. Road Trippin from LA to New York with all that is in between. That is alot by the way, Vegas, National parks like Yellowstone, cities, states, big cars, big burgers and meeting people with names like Bud, Hank and Elvis Jr III.
