Frequently Asked Questions
What type of clothes to bring?
You do not want to bring too many clothes, you will spent most of the time in a Bikini. So I would advise two pairs of shorts, one skirt and a few vests/T-shirts would be fine you do not need lots of stuff in Tofo! Take lots of rehydration salts, pain killers and diareeze - very hard to get in Mozambique. Bring a rash vest - the sun can be incredibly strong on the boat and there is no shade - also helps with Jelly fish.
How can I keep my costs for food, is there a communal kitchen?
There is a communal kitchen available to all guests wishing to self-cater. It has a fridge, gas cooking plates and a few basic cooking utensils. It is advisable to bring your own pots, pans kitchen utensils and cutlery.
Do you go in scuba gear on the Ocean Safaris?
On the Ocean Safaris, you do not go in Scuba gear either, you snorkel or freedive. If you have never been in the water with a whaleshark, here is the reason why you do not do this in Scuba Gear. Whale Sharks are surface feeders and descend to 25 metres and back up to the surface regularly, they are also reasonably fast in the water as well (they swim around the same speed as someone doing a leisurely front crawl). In Scuba Gear it is really hard to keep up with them from the drag on the equipment, and the fact that the ascend and descend so much would make it dangerous if you attempted to follow them up and down (you might get bent). While most divers are aware of this, you would be surprised how many experienced divers just loose it when they see one, and start maintaining erratic profiles to keep up with the whale sharks. If you are snorkling, not only is it easy to keep up with them, you are free to duck dive down with them and ascend ant any rate.
As you do this in the morning, you are free of residual nitrogen and can do this as much as you want, in the afternoon you can go diving, surfing or chilling on the beach.
Are Whale Sharks Dangerous?
Absolutely not! They are big but they do not even have teeth. They are extremely impressive though, and being lucky to see one, and swim with one once, is never enough.
I am not a qualified diver yet.. Can I still Join
Yes you can, you will need to pay a little extra to cover the cost of an open water course, this is about €350.
Can I do anything else there?
Yes, you can. Fishing, Surfing, Ocean Kyacking and exploring some of the worlds most unspoilt coastline. Not bad.
