Wanaka and the Skydive

Wanaka 15-11-2010

Surprisingly beautiful! Wanaka is my favourite place so far (Only done the South Island and still need to go up North so it might change) with lots of activities you can do on your New Zealand Gap Year. I would thoroughly recommend staying here a few days if you wish to catch up with some sleep, write on your travel diary,, check your e mails, do some nice walks, sunbath by the lake (do not forget your sun screen 30!) and scream your lungs out with the amazing Wanaka Skydive. Also our selected accommodation is fantastic. This backpackers hostel was built in 2008 and looks amazing. The beds are good, the bathroom facilities are spacious and clean, and there is a small travel des, a breakfast area and a really nice kitchen with a small balcony. It is located one minute from the lake, from the main street, from the super market. The hostel also has a great bar. Here you can get a 5 nzd meal and the menu is different every day of the week. There are several activities organized and the friendly staff has an answer to all your questions.
The Wanaka skydive. This was Oliver his first skydive. We were mean to do one in Australia in Byron Bay, but the weather would not let us. Here in New Zealand we had a clear morning so up we went. High up! We flew to 15.000 ft which is about 4.300 meter high in a brand new bright orange plain. Geared up in with the newest equipment and checked several times by the professional staff we did not feel too nervous. More exited! And wow once you get ready to jump and look down…. You cannot believe yourself you are doing it. But trust me the feeling is addictive! Wow, a whole 60 seconds free fall. This thrill feels like more. Luckily we had several more challenges planned in Queenstown.

We also had a talk to the owners of Wanaka Skydive. They have been operating for over 20 years and keep on investing in the best there is, the best jumpers, camera men, plains and gear. We had a good talk about safety with Dave (it is on video, how safe is taking a skydive) and we had a productive meeting with the other owner Jools, with whom we talked about how they set up Wanaka Skydive and new markets and promotion ideas.
