Coup? What Coup?!

Were you getting amped up to see some elephants, explore temples and trek in the jungle? Maybe you were counting down the days until you could relax on the tropical beaches and top up your tan. Or were you looking forward to partying all night, covered in paint and surrounded by tanned bodies on the Fullmoon party? And then out of nowhere you heard the word Coup. Coup? What does that have to do with me?! What about my holiday? Will it still be safe?

Over the past few weeks we’ve been getting lots of emails asking about the current situation in Thailand. We’ve actually all spent some time living in Thailand at one point or another and we still have lots of friends living out there. Also we have our own rep in Thailand and have a stake in the Dive school. I’ve been in touch with my friends still there to see what the real situation is.

First bit of great news guys….. All our trips are running as normal. Actually because of all the media hype you can now get cheap flights out there for the summer! Normally flight prices would be between £700-800+ at this time of year but now you can pick up return flights for less than £550! Just think of all the buckets on the beach, massages and even dives that could buy you. You could add on your Open Water Diving Course while you are out there with your savings! Instead of trying to paddle in cold English waters you could be learning to dive in 29 degrees tropical water seeing turtles and nemo! Crystal clear water, beautiful beaches and tropical palm trees await you. Now that’s a cool idea.

The problem with a coup is it sets the world media into panic mode. Coups seem to be a regular occurrence in Thailand and they always happen very peacefully. To put things in perspective, since the 1930s military coups have been taking place in Thailand on average every seven years, and life in most of the nation has in the past been largely unaffected.

My friend teaching English in Bangkok mentioned the only real different is there are a few soldiers on the street and there’s a curfew from 12am-4am in Bangkok (not in the north and on the islands). She said it’s actually safer now as there are more police around in Bangkok. They’re even posing for photos with people in the street. Not so scary after all! Is the super cheap flight you’re thinking of getting landing at night…. never fear Airport traffic is exempt from the curfew

Worried that the coup might cramp your style…. don’t fancy being in bed at midnight during your holiday… don’t worry there’s good news the curfew has been lifted in three major tourist areas. Get your florescent tank tops, glow paint and buckets at the ready because yesterday they announced that the Full Moon Party is exempt from the curfew! No excuses not to party until sunrise the next day.

What do the following have in common….
