Foody 9th Street Market in Philly

Hit the oldest and largest everyday open-air market for some authentic, Philly foodie action. Fill your calorie quotient with cheese, chocolate, deli items, and baked goods, then wash it all down with a Philly Cheesesteak chaser at an iconic spot – Pat and Geno’s.

Activity in Detail

Highlights:

  • Wander through the famous 9th Street Italian Market
  • Meet local store owners and workers
  • Discover the history of the markets
  • See the street made famous by Rocky
  • Get your fill with tasty food samples
  • Be spoiled for choice by ethnic food stores
  • Get in touch with your inner food critic while chomping down on a Philly cheesesteak

Itinerary:

Starting at the always-colourful South Street, head off with your local guide through the neighbourhood of Bella Vistain South Philly. Grab a drink at a local coffee shop and see one of the city’s great murals located across from a typical neighborhood park. Swing by a historic deli, duck into a tempting bakery and stroll along Christian Street before getting to the noises, aromas and sights of the famous Italian or, more accurately, 9th Street Market.

The market is the oldest and largest everyday open-air market in the USA, and it’s easy to understand why it is one of Philly’s must-see attractions. With your local guide leading the way, explore the huge variety of stores located here, many of which are Italian in heritage. Tempt taste buds as you wander past cheeses, chocolates, spices and olive oils. Discover bakeries, butchers and myriad other produce stalls plus a wonderful kitchen store. And don’t worry, if the temptation to purchase becomes too great, you’re likely to get a bargain as many of these stores discount for our travellers. Along the way you’ll get the chance to talk to some of the owners and employees of these shops and stalls, and hear fascinating stories of the development of this area over the years.

After leaving the market, cross over the main intersection and head towards a variety of Mexican stores. If this area looks familiar it’s probably because it was here that Rocky ran through the streets on one of his famous training runs. Nearby you’ll also see a selection of Asian stores, brimming with aromas and sights that are sure to delight the senses. Continue on for another block or two and arrive at the intersection made famous by local restaurants Pat’s and Geno’s, where you’ll be able to choose between their competing Philly cheesesteaks. Select your topping, with or without onions, and what cheese you’d like, and pull up a seat on the street to enjoy a quintessential Philly culinary experience. It’s a delicious way to end your market walking tour.

New York City Day Trip

A kick ass tour of New York City including transport via Minivan and a tour leader taking you to different museums (own expense). Its a 10 hour tour so you´ll be busy that day!

Activity in Detail

We kick off our tour in New York City by heading to Ground Zero, site of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, to witness the massive rebuilding efforts and memorial that has been dedicated to the victims. Next, we’ll head to nearby Wall Street at the heart of the financial district, home to America’s wealth, business interests, and ambition.

Next, on a waterway cruise* around New York City harbor, we’ll view the city’s magnificent skyline and sights, including the busy South Street Seaport, the Statue of Liberty, and the Brooklyn Bridge from the Hudson and East River (note: our boat does not stop at Ellis Island or Statue of Liberty.) We will visit Rockefeller Center, home to NBC Studios, and the surrounding shopping district along Fifth Avenue, mecca of the fashion industry and luxury brand retail stores. And no tour of New York City would complete without a trip to the top of the Empire State Building*, where on the 86th floor, 1,050 feet above the city’s bustling streets, the observatory offers panoramic views from within a glass enclosed pavilion.

Additional visits will include the newly transformed USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum*, as well as the glorious Metropolitan Museum of Art, which contains many of the most famous works of art in the world. Then, we will go to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum*. Here we’ll have the chance to see many meticulously crafted wax models of celebrities and historical figures. After looking at some statues, you will be surprised to look at real human beings and mistake them to be statues and statues to be human beings…… That’s the fun part of this museum. The tour continues to the bright lights of Time Square and the Broadway Theatre District, and finally, on to the United Nations, a gathering place for 192 countries to meet and discuss important issues of the world such as world peace, poverty, hunger and human rights. The tour will conclude in Chinatown, and will drop passengers off at the two original pick-up locations in the evening around 6:00 pm.

The Ultimate Once In A Lifetime Round the World Trip. Why Compromise?

Warning! At some point in your life you will be old. Fact. Potentially a bit boring too and crushed under the responsibility of kids and a mortgage and most likely a boss who is an utter dickhead. When your kids ask you what you did in your lifetime,  what will you tell them? Our answer? Everything and then some. You only live once, so do that. Really. LIVE. This is the Xtreme Gap answer to office hours filled with boredom, to strip lighting and angry bosses. So here is what you are in for:
Toggle

From Vancouver, we cross the up-and-down landscape of grey, snow-dusted mountains and dark conifers. Set within a glorious range of mountains; Kelowna is blessed with lakes, pine forests, vineyards and beaches. We set up camp beside a pristine glinting lake, far removed from the city you started in, before you enjoy getting to know your fellow travellers on your first evening together in wine country.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 2-3: Yoho National Park

View the alpine meadows of Mount Revelstoke National Park en route to Yoho National Park. Hike or negotiate the rapids of the well-named Kicking Horse River. In any case, the tumbling cascades, glassy lakes and glinting peaks are drop-dead gorgeous… not to mention the glaciers. Your leader will take you to see some of the most incredible vistas within Yoho national Park, first Takakkaw Falls falling from the mountains to the valley below, followed by the incredible Emerald Lake with its glacial hues forest backdrop.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 4-5: Banff National Park

Boot up, saddle up and breathe in the crisp alpine air where nature’s bonanza includes beavers, bears, porcupines and elk. Ride the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain’s peak and recharge your batteries in the heavenly hot springs.

Day 6: Lake Louise

A nickname like the “gem of the Rockies” is a lot to live up to, but it’s no sweat for Lake Louise. The imposing château looks on as mountains cluster round the turquoise surface. As for you, well, you could always hike out to the Plain-of-Six-Glaciers or inspect the scene by paddle power on an optional canoe trip.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 7-8: Jasper National Park

The widescreen scenery keeps on coming. The breathtaking Icefields Parkway provides a peach of a drive with panoramic views of endless valleys, sheer ridges, glaciers and spruce forests – truly one of the world’s ultimate drives. Jasper’s wildlife puts up a fight for your attention too; the sharp-eyed may glimpse grizzlies, wolves or caribou. This sprawling natural expanse offers bike trails, helicopter flights and ice-walks through the most spectacular scenery that the Canadian Rockies offers.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 9: Wells Grey Provincial Park

The stillness, silence and isolation go up another notch. Drive through secluded Wells Gray and experience the stunning vistas of high mountains, deep canyons, volcanic cones, brooding old-growth forests and raging white-water waterfalls – you’ve never seen anything like it. Nature surely never felt closer.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 10-11: Whistler

Travel the old Gold Rush trail through Cache Creek and on to the adventure capital of Western Canada! Perhaps better known as a winter resort, Whistler has plenty of heart-pumping action and well as being an area of stunning beauty all year round.

Return to Vancouver along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, and stop by Stanley Park, a 4,000-hectare green wonderland. How we are different

The main focus at our camp is personal rider improvement in all types of fun and challenging terrain on the mountains. We ski and ride lots of off-piste, powder, tree runs, natural freestyle runs, wind lips, small cliffs, cornices, pillow lines, parks, pipes, runs not on the trail maps and other terrain types you can and can’t imagine! We take full advantage of the best terrain and help you experience and realise a whole new way of riding mountains. We don’t consider ourselves a traditional ‘gap year’ or ‘career break’ type of program in which you would usually spend most of your mountain time preparing for your instructor exams. We do ride on groomed runs, but not necessarily practising snowboard drills or exercises. We’re different, we’re exciting and you’ll love it!

Coaches and Pros

The right coach makes all the difference to your camp experience, which is why we have carefully compiled an all-star group of experienced coaches and pros. We are fully certified with years of coaching experience, are long time locals with intimate knowledge of Whistler-Blackcomb and its sweet-spots, and have larger-than-life personalities. We are committed to completely improving your skiing/riding and we’re stoked to show you the best terrain these mountains have to offer.

Unrivalled Mountain Knowledge

We have been living and riding in Whistler for most of our lives, and it’s because of this that we know the absolute best spots to ride- every hidden powder run and secret spot on the mountains! Our excitement to share our knowledge provides campers an unparalleled riding experience, and campers always express their thanks for this! Imagine arriving at a new resort and suddenly riding only the best terrain for every day’s snow conditions. Yes please! This important point really does make all the difference. We know all the secret spots, hidden fun runs, jump runs, powder runs behind walls of trees, deep powder spots, un-tracked powder runs, cool tree runs, hidden cliffs and drops, deserted groomers and cruisers. We’ve hit every jump, every bump and every jib around every corner! Even seasoned Whistler locals don’t know the spots we know- we’re that good. Whistler and Blackcomb’s terrain is huge- you’ll understand when you get here!

Low Camper-to-Coach Ratio

Our low ratios mean lots of personal feedback, focus and attention. Training within a small group of a similar level is a great way to promote learning and to keep it personal. We have a low camper-to-coach ratio, which averages 4:1. We also keep our overall weekly campers number low so that everybody really gets to know each other. The only problem with this is that it makes it more difficult for you to leave!

Improvement and Confidence

Snowboarding or skiing with someone at a higher level than you- visually seeing it done right- riding in a small group where everyone is pushing each other to succeed- and focused, immediate feedback is the fastest way to improvement. This is how it’s done with us! You push yourself, your confidence and each other every day, and sometimes without even knowing it! Combine all of this with riding the best terrain of the day and a smiling, positive group – it will all catapult your progress and comfort level. Tried, tested and true, this results in real snowboard improvement. That’s how we roll.

Comfortable Accommodation

We provide clean, bright and modern housing for all of our campers. All of our houses have WiFi, laundry facilities, cable TV, phones, bedding and fully supplied kitchens. Each house is fully furnished with two beds in each room. The house locations range from walking distance to the village to a short bus ride (5-10 minutes).

The Full Monty

Our attention to detail means your camp experience is the complete package! We’re in the business of providing an unparalleled mountain camp with all the bells and whistles, not to mention taking care of the small details. We aim to create unforgettable memories for you. We include weekend lift tickets, local bus passes, hot tub-sauna-pool passes, free stuff from our sponsors and full season passes (not ‘mid week’ season passes). From the moment you arrive here in Whistler you are taken care of with the highest level of service campers have come to expect from us. The only thing you are responsible is for your food and drink. We are flexible on all issues surrounding your stay, whatever will enhance it for you is what we will strive to do! And when the chairlifts stop – our evening activities and social events begin. If you have the energy, we have a big list of fun stuff to experience each night.

The Social Aspect

The social aspect of camp is also something that brings campers back year after year. We plan lots of evening activities and social events in and around Whistler. Your after-riding and weekend schedule can be as busy or mellow as you choose. Here are some things you can do:

Weekly welcome drinks – Friday grad parties – video clinics – equipment waxing – night snow tubing – cinema nights – indoor gym sports – ice skating – sauna & hot tub soaks – window shopping – people watching – shop browsing – pub nights – night clubbing – weekend Vancouver trips – snowmobiling – dog sledding – cat boarding – heli boarding – snow shoeing – zip trekking – Tarzan swinging – x country skiing… there’s too much to list!

Who can join?

We offer camps for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, from confident novice to aspiring pro athletes and every level in between! Customized package camps are available for beginners. Please contact us for customized packages.

Canada Ski Instructor and Snow Board Instructor Course Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the Xtreme Gap snow sports instructor courses over others?

You will notice a lot of training organisations offering ski instructor courses. These companies only include CSIA/CASI level 1 in the actual course fees… But if you read the fine print anything beyond that is at an extra cost. (CSIA/CASI LEVEL 2 is usually required if students want any chance to obtain a working visa sponsorship the following year).

Some try to fluff up their programs by including a very basic avalanche day or a 1 day first aid course but these for the most part are not accredited courses. With our course, we include all the training fees, and provide you with a 40 hour wilderness training course. Our students come away more highly qualified and ready to hit a competitive snow sports instructor jobs market.

What kind of jobs can I get after completion of the course?
With all the certifications and experience you gain on this program you really should not have any difficulties finding work as a ski or snowboard instructor at resorts all over the world. Some graduates may be eligible to return to Mt. Washington Resort for employment the following year. We will often act as a reference for alumni looking for employment in the industry. For those looking to pursue a career guiding in the backcountry this program will give you many of the prerequisites required for further training.
Do I need a visa to enter Canada?
Luckily for most, especially people from the UK and European countries, all you need is a valid passport and you will be permitted to enter Canada for a period of six months! People from some countries may need to apply for a Visitors Visa in advance.
Check the following link to to see whether or not it is necessary for you. Canada visa information
Do I need to be a good skier or boarder to take part?
Well you should be at an “intermediate” level or higher, if you want to start the course. You should be comfortable on blue runs (which confusingly are Red runs in Europe).
How much spending money will I need?
You will need money for breakfasts, lunches on the hill and meals on weekends. Most people also like to go for a few drinks at the end of the day or out to movies etc. Furthermore if you wish to take part in some of the extra curricular road trips and adventures there will be additional costs. The amount you spend can vary greatly and although many people can get by on much less, an average budget is between $100 – $250 CAD per week, which is around 60 to 160GBP. The biggest expense for some people is beer in the pub about 5 to 6.50CAD for a pint. And for food anywhere from 25CAD (eat in on the cheap) to a maximum of 125CAD (eat out) per week.
What kind of insurance will I need?
If you are not covered by Canada’s health care system, you will need travel medical insurance (this is mandatory). Make sure your insurance covers you for adventure sports. You may also wish to purchase trip cancellation insurance in case of sickness or injury, which prevents you from completing the course (optional).
Am I guaranteed to pass all the exams?
There are no guarantees. The certifications such as the CSIA level 2 ski instructor certification, CASI level 2 snowboard instructor certification and the Wilderness First Aid course have quite high standards. We do, however, promise to provide the best possible training for you to be successful. We exams are achievable by most people who apply themselves and train hard. In some cases it is possible to be re-examined at a later date although additional exam fees may apply.
Is there skiing on days off?
Does a bear poop in the woods? Yes. So ski through them a little quicker in Canada. The course cost covers a full season pass for Mt. Washington Resort, which is also good for night skiing/riding and the resorts world class cross-country ski area. You will also have the opportunity to visit North Vancouver Island’s great little community ski hill… Mt. Cain.
What about the night life?
There will be plenty of opportunities to party! Although we try to focus a little more on ski and snowboard training and leadership development than some other “gap year” programs. We still know the value of being able to let loose.
Are you guaranteed a job after the course?
No company can actually guarantee a job (although some claim to). Provided you are successful on the course and present with a good working attitude, then we will recommend you for employment with the Mount Washington Snow school for the following season. So far everyone who we have ever recommended has been employed. The snow school will then sponsor you for a working visa to come back to Canada and there is no need to apply for one. Graduates of our 12 week course are generally hired on full time for the following ski season (December to April) although shifts can vary.
Can I get recommendations if I apply somewhere else?
If you would prefer to try somewhere new, then we are happy to act as references. Our graduates are working in the industry all over the world. Having all seven certifications included in the course will give you a distinct advantage. (Much of our competition actually offer the equivalent of our 4 week basic course in an 11 week package to make it look comparable. But if you look at the fine print they are not).
What are the wages for a ski and snowboard instructor in Canada?
Starting wages in Canada are pretty low compared to some skiing nations. It will be around $12 per hour, but increase significantly with experience, further qualifications and the ability to gain return clientele. Request lessons pay significantly more.
What other activities will we be doing?
We organize free or inexpensive activities on weekends, but we also organize some optional extra curricular trips. For example going to Vancouver for an NHL hockey game and usually costs around 250 to 300CAD. You can also do bungee jumping costs around 100CAD. Sounds expensive but most other stuff we do is cheap or free.
What does the equipment costs in Canada?
Used equipment will costs between 250 and 450CAD. New equipment between 500 and 1400CAD. (Depending on his tastes and what you actually need). We do get 25% discount at the local ski shop.

Laze in grassy Balboa Park or feel sand between your toes at Mission Beach and top up your tan. San Diego has the perfect environment for so many beachfront activities; rollerblading, beach volleyball, boogie boarding and bicycling… you name it! Later, cruise the Gaslamp Quarter and the heart of San Diego’s nightlife. There will also be time for some sunshine at the world-famous San Diego Zoo or Sea World Adventure Park!

Day 3: Colorado River

This is A-grade Arizona. Feel the heat beneath the blue skies of the Mojave Desert, cool off in the Colorado River and check out the original London Bridge. We kid you not!

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 4-5: Grand Canyon

Wow! You may be lost for words. Nothing you have ever seen before will prepare you for this spectacular site! Hike from the forest above to the desert below, red rock to white powder or take an optional helicopter flight for a birds-eye view and marvel at the brilliant colours. The canyon depths is nothing short of mind-blowing. Then again so is the sunrise and that’s free.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 6-7: Las Vegas

As the desert city comes into view, luminous Vegas ups the ante – the greatest show on earth! Catch some rays by the hotel pool then dive into “The Strip” in style on an optional limousine tour. Indulge in an all-you-can eat buffet, take in a show or just watch the amazing crowds, neon and attractions that many hotel casinos have to offer. And if that’s not enough, take an optional helicopter flight down The Strip then gamble in one of the world class casinos before hitting the world famous clubs…all night long!

Accommodation: 2 en-route hotel nights paid locally

Day 8-10: Sierra Nevada & Yosemite National Park

Next we wind through high-up peaks with far-out views across the Sierra Nevadas that will have you itching to get your trekking boots on, and there is no better place than one of nature’s greatest back yards, Yosemite National Park. Stretch your legs and walk amongst the Giant Sequoias. Hike to one of the magnificent waterfalls, or hire a bicycle to pedal along the park roads.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 11-12: San Francisco

Fall for Frisco’s charm while touring Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf and the hillside heights. Enjoy a full day to explore the city, with plenty of time for shopping, sightseeing and a stroll over the Golden Gate Bridge before a cruise on the bay for an unforgettable sunset, then go bar hopping ’til the tiny hours. Mission and Marina Districts usually check the right boxes.

Day 13: San Francisco & Pacific Coast

Say hello to the rugged wilderness of Big Sur and historic Monterey. Settle in to your camp and watch the sunset over the sparkling Pacific Ocean.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any age restrictions?
Our tours are designed for trekkers aged 18 to 38 years of age. Consequently, they tend to focus on activities and nightlife that appeal to that age range.
How much luggage can I bring?
One suitcase or rucksack with a maximum weight of 20 KG, plus your sleeping bag and one carry on bag for the van. Be sure to check the weight allowance of your luggage with your airline as well.
Do I need a visa to travel to North America?
You should check exact visa requirements within your home country. Passport holders from countries that qualify for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are now required to obtain an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authority) which is free and can be applied for online.
When should I book my trip?
Book early! Many tours fill quickly so you should contact us as soon as possible. We would be happy to help you choose the trip that is right for you. All of our sales representatives have first hand knowledge and information about our trips. Call us anytime to check availability or hold a seat on option for up to three days with no obligation.
Why do I have to pay locally for some accommodation on tour?
The reason many en route hotels are paid locally is due to fluctuation of hotel prices throughout the year. Instead of getting ‘locked’ into a contract with one hotel for an entire year, we are able to choose one that has the most reasonable price for that time of year. This saves you money in the end
I am travelling on my own. Will I be the only one?
No. The majority of the people travelling with us are on their own. Our trips are a great way to travel safely and meet other like minded, adventurous people from all over the world and we do not charge single supplements.

Trip Itinerary

You can join the trip departing Los Angels or San Francisco

Day 1-2: Los Angeles, Colorado River & Grand Canyon

After a short tour of Hollywood we bid the City of Angels farewell and head through California on day one to the vast swathes of Arizona’s cactus-prickled desert. After spending an evening along the Colorado River we explore America’s premier National Park, and find out why it is called the Grand Canyon. Keep your feet firmly on the ground or swoop above it all on an optional helicopter flight. One thing’s for sure though, this place looks incredible from any angle, especially walking along the rim at sunset.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 3-4: Las Vegas

Next, Las Vegas – the greatest show on earth! The Strip, the shows, the casinos, the clubs; Sin City’s glitziest and brashest spots are sure to impress as you cruise the Las Vegas Boulevard on an included limo ride! Hop onto one of the world’s highest thrill rides at Vegas’ Stratosphere and it won’t just be your head that’s spinning. And if that’s not enough, take a helicopter flight down The Strip or just gamble the night away in one of the world class casinos.

Accommodation: 2 en-route hotel nights paid locally

Day 5-6: Yosemite National Park

Heading through Central California we take a scenic drive into the Yosemite National Park region and a chance to hike or bike through the extraordinary landscape of glacier-carved granite monoliths and spectacular waterfalls. Keep your eyes peeled for black bears. Coyote roam freely as well and when the sun goes down, their howling often echoes amidst pines and sequoias. Admit it, this is what clicks the spirit of the great outdoors up a notch or two.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 7: San Francisco

On our last day together we head back west through California’s gold country, where in 1848 the finding of a single nugget triggered a stampede of gold-seekers known as the 49′ers, before arriving at the home of the beatnik generation, San Francisco.

This tour ends at our gateway hotel at approximately 17:00 hrs. We can book you post-tour accommodation at our gateway hotel if required. If you are planning to fly tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 21:00 hrs.

This tour also departs from San Francisco

Accommodation

All accommodation apart from two night’s in Vegas are included in the trip. Along the way we are camping, with all equipment included in comfortable modern tents.

In Vegas you stay in a downtown hotel, where there is a local payment. Waking up with views of national parks take some beating, and certainly beats a motel.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to travel to North America?
You should check exact visa requirements within your home country. Passport holders from countries that qualify for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are now required to obtain an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authority) which is free and can be applied for online.
When should I book my Trek?
Book early! Many tours fill quickly so you should contact us as soon as possible. We would be happy to help you choose the Trek that is right for you. All of our sales representatives have first hand knowledge and information about our Treks. Call us anytime to check availability or hold a seat on option for up to three days with no obligation.
I am travelling on my own. Will I be the only one?
No. The majority of the people travelling with us are on their own. Our trips are a great way to travel safely and meet other like minded, adventurous people from all over the world and we do not charge single supplements.
What's included in the price of the Trek?

1) The services of a professionally-trained tour guide

2) Transportation in a 15 passenger air-conditioned maxi van

3) All necessary camping equipment including tents, cold food storage containers, camp lights, stoves and other camp accessories

4) Admission to all National Parks and monuments as per the “Flexible Night Stops”

5) Special included activities unique to each Trek

Are there any age restrictions?
Our tours are designed for trekkers aged 18 to 38 years of age. Consequently, they tend to focus on activities and nightlife that appeal to that age range.

How much luggage can I bring?

One suitcase or rucksack with a maximum weight of 20 KG, plus your sleeping bag and one carry on bag for the van. Be sure to check the weight allowance of your luggage with your airline as well.
