Auckland
Our last stop in New Zealand was Auckland. Many travelers start in Auckland, the gateway to New Zealand, and end up in wellington if they just do the North Island, and in Christchurch is they do both islands.
It is worth staying 2 nights in Auckland. It is a nice city for stuff to do during day and night!
Again you can Bungy, but we skipped the Bungy here. I had my portion. What I wanted was walk along the harbor, have a great glass of wine and eat lots and lots of sushi!
The top things to do in Auckland (besides eating all the sushi): take in the view from the sky tower, Bungy from Auckland Harbour Bridge, Visit the Auckland museum and Domain hike in lush rain forest at Waitakere Rangers National Park, go sailing or catch the ferry across to the seaside suburb Davenport to catch some sun (do not forget to apply sunscreen, twice!). Stroll around the historic Parnell, head to the viaduct for dinner and…try to resist shopping!
Where to stay in Auckland? We would recommend Stay at Base. We had a lovely meeting with Amy, the sales manager of Base. We were able to work out a great deal for you and the accommodation passes they have. Base Auckland is very central, it has a nice bar, a big lobby with lots of options to lounge, use internet and chill. There is a big communal kitchen and everything is just really well organized. Also they can tell you where the Stray office is.
Xtreme Gap gives you different New Zealand Gap Year options to travel through New Zealand. Weather you have 1, 2, 3 or more weeks, if you want to stay a year, of you want to learn how to surf , You can travel by bus or hire your own mini camper van. It is up to you what you choose, we just want to make sure we have something for everyone!
The Stray bus is a really good option to travel around. The office is located in the city center of Auckland and you are more than welcome to drop in and ask any questions regarding your trip. The shop has a relaxing atmosphere, there is TV’s, free tea and coffee and you can use the internet to check flights, emails from your mom or facebook! In Auckland we also had a meeting with Neil, the founder of Oz Experience, Kiwi experience and now owner of Stray and spaceships (the Swiss army knife of camper vans). All the options you have combining our products together are amazing. Read all about it on our website (will come out the end of January 2011). We ended our 2 days in Auckland getting the bus at 4 in the morning to fly via Brisbane to the Solomon islands…destinations unfamiliar to most, and to us!
