Trip Frequently Asked Questions

Ages
The Africa Overland Truck Tours are open to all ages and nationalities.
Health
All people who join an adventure tour need to be in good health. Medical facilities are not always available. If you have a specific medical condition it is compulsory for you to advise us before departure.
Malaria
Malaria is a real concern in many areas of Africa, especially during the rainy season. Our advice is simple, prevent getting bitten by using an insect repellent and use an effective prophylactic. Speak to your doctor before selecting your Malaria medication.
Vaccinations
Please ensure you have the relevant vaccinations. Proof of inoculation is required on certain tours. The best is to contact your GP.
Currency, money and banking
This is covered comprehensively in the pre-departure dossier. South African Rand and Credit Cards work in Southern Africa. In East Africa (incl. Zimbabwe and Zambia) USD cash is best
Age
Passengers under the age of 18 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian. Passengers over the age of 65 require a medical clearance certificate from their doctor stating they are fit enough to travel.
What to bring?
A sense of fun and a flexible attitude! A full checklist of essential items is included in the pre-departure info document.
What leave home?
Your watch, cellphone, laptop, work, stress, concept of time, pre-conceptions about anything and any attitude that is not pure adventure.
Changes to routes/schedules
Although we will do our best at all times to ensure that the tour remains on schedule we want to make it very clear that this is not always possible. There is always something unexpected on a tour, sometimes the truck gets stuck in mud, or sand, sometimes it rains… Anything can happen, but nothing that a good sense of humour cannot overcome.
Do I need to have a travel insurance?
Yes! Make sure your insurance covers being airlifted in case of serious illness/injury as good hospital facilities are often a long way from where our tours travel. Free credit card insurance is often insufficient, so a separate policy is recommended. As travel insurance is compulsory, you will be asked for the policy number before being allowed to board our vehicle.
How many people are on the tour?
The average number of passengers on a tour is 18. On the camping tours there is a maximum of 24 and minimum of 4. On the Accommodated tour the minimum is 4 and the maximum is 18. The maximum number on Gorillas, Serengeti and Masai Mara tours is 18. Single Supplements are limited to 4 per tour on all tours.
Do I have to help with the camp chores?
Of course not, but you will not make many friends! On our tours our guides do most of the work. On a camping tour your participation in camp chores is limited: taking turns to assist with washing-up duties, putting up and taking down your tent and loading your bags. On some of our accommodated tours we include a camp assistant.
Who is responsible for my visas?
You are responsible for your own visas. Please check the itinerary of your tour carefully and if you need a multiple entry visa be sure to get one. Your passport needs to be valid for 6 months after your departure date from Africa and you must have at least 3-4 blank pages available. Some countries will not allow you to enter without 2 blank pages in your passport
Is there a single accommodation option?
All of our tours are priced on twin share accommodation. The single supplement is not compulsory on our camping tours but if you want your own tent you need to pay the single supplement. If you are booking one of our accommodated tours alone you have to pay the single supplement. There are a maximum of 4 single supplements available on all tours.
Terms and conditions
All travellers will be required to sign our indemnity form on departure. Any person refusing to do so will not be allowed on the tour.

Fancy spending your gap year in the beautiful southeast coast of South Africa, with stunning beaches at your doorstep, and rewarding social development work to keep you busy during the week? Our South African Cultural Exchange programme is the perfect mix of fun and adventure with providing some real value to a local community who needs it.

Be a community legend on your gap year.

Whether it’s helping little pre-schoolers go about their day, or making sure that the elderly have a clean environment to live in, the work you’ll do in Kenton-On-Sea, the beautiful beach town outside of Port Elizabeth, will be hugely appreciated and respected by both the community members and workers.

Kenton-on-Sea will be your new home in South Africa, as you participate in one of our most important cultural exchange programmes. Situated on the spectacular coastline of South Africa’s southeastern tip, there are lots of gorgeous beaches where you can relax with friends and grab a cold beer after your day’s work is done. There are even two refreshing rivers where many of our programme participants love swimming to cool down in the evenings.

And with everything you need just a short walking distance away from your accommodation, you’re guaranteed a stress-free, easy transition into life in this seaside town.

Help Make A Measurable Difference In A South African Seaside Town

The South Africa Cultural Exchange Programme is the perfect opportunity to do something different and meaningful with your gap year. Don’t just spend your valuable time off getting so drunk that you don’t even remember what you did! Come home from your time abroad with irreplaceable memories, unparalleled travel and cultural experiences, and a new vision of the world. Spending time helping others is one of the most valuable and important things you can do during your gap year, and in life.

Our cultural exchange programme embodies a unique model of empowerment within the local community, enabling members to help themselves through enhanced economic, social, educational and environmental development schemes.

This rewarding programme will allow you to make a difference in a range of peoples’ lives, from toddlers taking their first vital ‘steps’ in life to adults looking to make a fresh start in education, and elderly members of the community who have more zest for life than you ever thought possible.

Through seven special programme features, you will gain valuable experience in a range of working environments and social development programmes. The areas where you will help the most are:

  • Feeding Scheme Assistance: Spend time seeing what it’s really like to work in a humanitarian aid setting, working in the soup kitchens to feed the vulnerable children of the area.
  • Early Education Assisting Help out in two preschools, playing with the little kiddies and teaching them valuable lessons.
  • Primary Education Assisting: Teach young kids some English skills, help the teacher in the classroom and grow with pride as you watch your kid’s progress.
  • Elderly Housekeeping Initiative: Make a tangible difference in the lives of elderly community members, by aiding with cleaning and spending valuable time getting to know them.
  • Homework Support: It may seem easy for you, but assisting kids with their homework will help to keep them focused, motivated and enthusiastic about education. This incredible support network also has a 100% success rate!
  • Youth Empowerment: Help young adults develop the skills to brighten their future. Using simple group exercises and helpful tools, you can help them to develop valuable business, leadership, entrepreneurial and social skills.
  • IT literacy: Help advance the community and bring important technological opportunities to the area by assisting in computer literary with primary school children.
  • Coastal Conservation Project: Undertake rewarding conservation work with the help of the fun and enthusiastic children of Kenton-on-Sea, as you clean up the coast and take part in important research of the wetlands.

It’s Not All Work, No Play!

Living in South Africa will give you an awesome opportunity to explore the country in depth. Weekends at the South Africa Cultural Exchange are yours to enjoy and you can spend them any way you like; whether that involves lying on the gorgeous white-sand beaches of Kenton-on-Sea, or taking some epic trips further afield to discover more awesome parts of the country.

And if our community exchange programme is not enough to keep you busy, then there are plenty of other additional adventures and activities that you can enjoy while you’re there.

With South Africa hailed as the adrenaline capital of the African continent, you can experience an optional range of exciting extreme sports and activities like never before. Be prepared to go:

Cool activities include everything from elephant and lion monitoring, to helping to combat harmful alien plants.

ACCOMMODATION

We provide accommodation for all of our programme participants. The house is situated in the stunning seaside town of Kenton-on-Sea, with gorgeous beaches and everything you need just a short walk away. It is not luxurious but has everything you will need for a comfortable and safe stay in Kenton-on-Sea. Bedrooms and bathrooms may be shared, depending on occupancy. The house includes a fully equipped kitchen, lounge with TV, courtyard and BBQ facilities. Bed linen is also provided and laundry is done for you in the washing machine on site. The house does not have a telephone but call cards can be easily purchased in the town, where there is also an Internet café.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

What are the three basic meals included in the price?
The meals are simple but delicious; cereal and toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and chicken stew with vegetables and rice for dinner. Programme participants must cook the meals in the house and clean up after themselves. External extra ingredients and meals are not included. Any special dietary requirements are not catered to, but most special dietary products can be found in the local supermarket.

How do I get to Kenton-on-Sea?
You will have to purchase flights to either Cape Town or Johannesburg, and then get a connecting national flight to Port Elizabeth, the nearest airport to Kenton-on-Sea.

What should I bring/pack?
Bring some light sweaters and long trousers if you are coming in the winter months (April to September), as the mornings and evenings can be quite cool but daytime is usually warm. The rest of the year can be very hot; so light clothing, summer shoes and swim gear will suffice.

  • Also consider bringing:
  • Water Bottle
  • Camera
  • Spare batteries
  • Sunglasses
  • Personal medical goods (there is a pharmacy in Kenton though)
  • Cards/CD’s
  • Sunscreen
  • Notebook/diary and pen
  • Hair dryer if you really need one
Should I bring anything for the children and community?
It is not necessary to bring anything from your home country. However, anything that you can provide will be greatly appreciated by everyone. For example, the local schools are always searching for stationary such as blackboard chalk, pencils, pens, writing books, erasers, paint brushes and paper, pocket calculators, colour pens, files, paper glue, rulers, playing balls, reading books or even old laptops. We understand that it may be heavy to travel with these extra items, and it is not compulsory at all, but if you believe you can bring anything, please do.

Will someone pick me up from the airport?
Yes, if you arrive on a Monday to Port Elizabeth Airport, between 08:00 AM and 15:00 PM. If your arrival flight arrives later than 15:00 PM, you will need to stay overnight in a hostel or B&B in Port Elizabeth. For departures from Port Elizabeth, you will be dropped off at the airport on any weekday after 10:30 AM.

How long is the programme?
There is a minimum stay of 2 weeks but there is no maximum stay. We definitely recommend combining two weeks of this with other activities such as our wildlife conservation project or doing a road trip through the garden route.

Is the programme open all year round?
No, the programme is closed for two weeks from 5th May to 19th May, and for two weeks from 6th October to 20th October. It is also closed for three weeks over Christmas and New Year (December 15th to January 5th).

How many days will I work on the Cultural Exchange Program?
Visitors to the cultural exchange programme work 5 days a week, with each activity planned in advance by your coordinator. You will have weekends free to spend as you wish; traveling, relaxing or more.

Are there any ATM’s in the area?
Yes, there are several ATM’s in Kenton-on-Sea that accept Visa or MasterCard. Travellers cheques and foreign currency is NOT accepted in Kenton-on-Sea, so must be changed before you arrive, or use your debit or credit card to withdraw money while you’re here.

Do I need any special vaccinations before I leave?
Maybe. Please check with your doctor.  A tetanus vaccination is the only recommended vaccination for traveling to South Africa. However it is not compulsory. No other shots or vaccinations are needed and the Eastern Cape area is entirely free from any tropical diseases and malaria.

Are there doctors in the area of Kenton-on-Sea?
Yes, the village has one doctor and there are more in Grahamstown and Port Alfred, both a short drive away. There is a small private hospital in Port Alfred and bigger ones in Port Elizabeth.

Wildlife Volunteering in South Africa

Have you ever wanted to experience the thrill of a South African safari, complete with the Big 5, camping in the bush and relaxing with a cold beer in some of the most stunning landscapes in the world? Or perhaps you have a passion for wildlife, and want to help a major conservation project carry out its essential work with the local flora and fauna? Well, with this trip, you can have both, thanks to the wonderful scenery, vital conservation projects and bountiful wildlife at one of the most stunning game reserves in South Africa.
Found in the Eastern Cape, The Xtreme Gap Year game reserve offers a programme to all interested volunteers, combining various once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. If you want to see the real South African bush – and not simply get carted around in a tour coach – you should read on, as we know you’ll love everything about this amazing trip!

So what will you be doing?

The working week is from Monday to Friday. Working hours depend on the season and may vary from 7 – 9 hours per day. The evenings are at your own leisure. Hang out with the other volunteers have a Brai (bbq) or fall in love with the African stars!

Saturdays are reserved for a town trip (either to Kenton- On-Sea, Port Alfred or Grahamstown) where you can do your  shopping, eat out and visit all the sites of the local towns. Sundays are free time.

Vital Conservation Projects

The Game Reserve is lucky enough to be home to a huge range of different animals, birds, reptiles and insects. Without diligent conservation efforts though, we risk losing these creatures forever – which is where you come in. As a volunteer, you will spend your days assisting with projects that will help to safeguard the future of this wildlife, which is something you can look back on for the rest of your life.

Some of the projects you might become involved in include:

  • Elephant impact monitoring – identifying elephants and monitoring their movement, so that they can be managed effectively in the future.
  • Lion prey selection monitoring – this is not for the faint-hearted! You must record as many lion kills as possible, so it’s possible to form a picture of what they are eating. As lions are fitted with collars, you’ll get regular glimpses of this majestic beast.
  • Population status of leopards – as one of the most elusive animals in South Africa, recording the population of leopards is tough. You’ll help to monitor them, and will be part of a privileged group to have seen this amazing cat.
  • Rhino monitoring – rhinos are becoming rarer and rarer, so it is vital that the remaining animals are monitored effectively. With 633 rhinos poached in South Africa in 2013 alone, protecting them is one of the biggest conservation priorities for the whole continent.
  • Birds in Reserve Project (BIRP) – if you are a bird lover, this is the one for you. There are numerous species of birds throughout the park, and they all need cataloging – something that lets you see the beauty of this part of the world first hand!
  • Conservation projects – these include projects such as game counts, sex and age surveys for certain species, controlling invasive plants and controlling soil erosion.

You won’t just get to do one of these projects though – you’ll be able to have a go at many of them! That way, you’ll get a real feel for how this important game reserve works. Occasionally, exciting projects such as animal releases and captures will also spring up, but these are not regular and therefore can’t be guaranteed. You’ll also get a number of educational lessons before each activity – don’t worry, they are informal and not like the formal classes found at schools and universities!

Helping the Community

While on this experience, you will also get to give back to the local community. Just outside the game reserve is a school that needs as much help as possible – it is under-funded and there aren’t enough teachers to teach the pupils there effectively. Volunteers on this programme will spend occasional days at this school, helping out with lessons and making a real difference to the lives of the children there. Projects at this school range from teaching the kids a variety of subjects, through to helping to renovate areas that have fallen into bad states.
This part of the trip is only available if you book outside of the school holidays, and heavy rain will also close the school. There is always something extra to do in the game reserve though, so you won’t have time to get bored!

What Else Is There?

Don’t worry: it isn’t all work, no play on this trip! You’ll get plenty of days off and will have the choice of many different activities to complete – or you can simply sit back and relax for the day, while you take in the sun and the beautiful scenery in the game reserve. Some of the additional activities you can complete are:
Horse riding on the beach

  • Deep sea fishing
  • Quad biking
  • Two day canoe trip on the Kowie River
  • Trips to the Addo Elephant National Park
  • Shark cage diving
  • Tandem sky-diving

Additionally, the closest town, Kenton, is only 15 minutes away and has an absolutely amazing beach, with a bar overlooking the sea – the perfect place to grab a beer and reflect on what you’ve done during the day. The town also has shopping facilities, where you can stock up on essentials. Port Alfred and Grahamstown are also close by, should you fancy a change of scenery.

Accommodation

Throughout your trip you will stay in a house on the reserve, sharing with other volunteers. There is an entertainment room within the house, as well as a TV and fully equipped kitchen. There’s even a plunge pool in the yard, although going outside of the house’s boundaries during the night is strictly forbidden – you don’t want to come face to face with one of the Big 5 when you aren’t expecting it!

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

How long is this trip?
This trip runs from 2-12 weeks, depending on your personal preference. The longer you stay though, the more you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the workings of this important and beautiful game reserve! This is a great option if you want to spend a decent amount of time South Africa, because all of your food and accommodation are included, you only have to budget a very small amount for spending money.
Is there phone/internet access?
There is Wi-Fi at the house, where you will be able to check emails and browse the internet. There is no phone though, so you will need to use the pay phone in  reception or pay phones in the local towns. To make calls, we’d recommend bringing a good supply of “World-Call” phone cards.
What is the food like?
Ingredients are provided, however volunteers will be required to cook their own meals each night. Unfortunately ingredients can’t be supplied for those with specific dietary requirements – these will need to be bought by the volunteer. If you want a really authentic South African meal, feel free to use the barbeque at the house!
What should I bring?
The weather will generally be hot, so make sure you bring plenty of t-shirts and pairs of shorts! Heavy rain does happen though, so it is also vital you bring a decent rain jacket. It is also important to bring clothes suitable for manual work, such as boots and long trousers. You should also bring a sleeping bag for your camping outings, as well as towels, toiletries and insect repellent.
Many volunteers also bring items from home that they can donate to the local school. Popular gifts include stationery, sports equipment and vegetable seeds for the school’s garden. You’ll be amazed at how grateful the children and staff will be when they receive these gifts from you.
How do I get there?
In order to reach the Game Reserve, you will need to fly into Port Elizabeth Airport, where you will be met by a taxi organised by the game reserve. As the airport is predominantly for domestic flights, you will probably need to fly to Cape Town or Johannesburg, before then getting an internal flight. Arrivals to the park must only be on Mondays, although you are able to finish your trip on Fridays, Saturdays or Mondays. Please note whilst we will arrange the taxi for you you will need to make a local payment to pay for it.

Can this be combined with other trips?
Absolutely! There are many other trips within Africa that can be combined with this one, plus it is also easy to go on this trip in combination with a trip to Australia or New Zealand. However you want to combine this trip, we will be able to make it happen!

Get ready for some Xtreme monkey business!

You will be tasked with helping out and keeping the centre running smoothly. Now if you feel that sounds like a walk in the park, just consider the fact that most of your colleagues will be juvenile baboons!

You will have to keep them in check look after them and become best mates with the troop (That’s a bunch of baboons by the way).

The daily tasks of caring for them include preparing food and milk, cleaning their play enclosures, playing, supervising, and observing them throughout the day, cleaning their sleeping cages, and preparing blankets and soft toys for their sleeping cages in the evenings. This is not a  glamorous job! You will get dirty, and peed and pooped on.

The animals’ needs come first, and they need the same care on weekends as well as weekdays. Other tasks include help preparing food crates for the older troops and monitoring troops daily. There are no rigid working hours, we finish when everything is completed, although a typical volunteer day usually is 7:00am until 5:00pm. Time off is dependent on the number of volunteers at the centre.

How necessary is it to get vaccinations again Rabies?
We’ve never dealt with a rabid animal, and I don’t have the vaccine and have been there for 3 years – but we always just inform people that when working with wild animals it is a recommended vaccination so they can decide for themselves.
What else is there to do in the area?
Short answer is lots! This is prime African Bush, home to some of the greatest safari parks and private game reserves in Africa. There is plenty to do in the area, and whilst there are loads of activities included during the project you may want to budget a little bit extra to get involved in some extracurricular activities.

Kruger National Park, the largest national park in South Africa Is a short drive away. There are optional trips into the park, to see Jessica the Hippo, the Panorama Route, and other various animal parks including a reptile park, a cheetah sanctuary, and an elephant sanctuary, among others.

With regards to payment for the extra activities. They van be paid in cash when at the centre to the staff member organising the trips during that time. If trips are not available due to lack of vehicle/staff member some volunteers chose to hire a car for 2 days to do site seeing (elephants, chimp eden for example). We do not take money in advance for trips due to the possibilities of vehicle problems or lack of available staff – the baboons always come first, but we do try our best to accommodate trips/sightseeing to other projects and the Kruger Park.

Do you need previous experience with wildlife?
Volunteers here don’t need any prior experience – Our dedicated Team of full-time professionals will give you all the training you need. You do need however lots of love and enthusiasm for working with primates. It can be hard work sometimes, but it is ultimately very rewarding.

Full Details

Throughout the course you will be guided and mentors by exceptionally qualified staff. The course is split into three separate stages as follows:

Pre-production

Starting off with an orientation session, you will be taken out on location and given an overview what can be done and where it can be done taking into consideration what kind of film you want to shoot. There will be a brainstorming session about the different topics available to choose from when shooting your own short documentary.

Then it’s on to learning about script writing and viewing wildlife film screenings of award-winning international films. You will be given a complete introduction to 2-D and 3-D camera technology as well as the techniques needed to successfully shoot movies in both 2-D and 3-D.

You will learn all about 2-D camera traps, and each student will have plenty of opportunities to setup camera traps themselves, enabling them to get unique and exciting footage of the local wildlife.

Expect bush pigs, duikers, bushbucks, vervet monkeys, baboons, reptiles….caracals and leopards!

The course will provide an introduction to sound and voice-over recordings and then finalising your script to get your shortlist ready.

Classes will take place in both classrooms and on location, and typically lectures given from 9 AM to 5 PM with a one-hour lunch break.

Production on location

So once you learn the basics it’s time to get out there and apply practical experience to learn the techniques. This is a great opportunity to get all the footage you need for your film, but not only this you will be responsible for the maintenance of the equipment as well. At all times you will be accompanied by a highly experienced wildlife filmmaker and also a game Ranger depending on the topic you choose, as after all you will be out there in wild Africa!

Expect long hours behind the camera, typically wildlife documentary cameraman will be up at the first crack of dawn and staying up well into the night to record ambient sounds so if this is really a career that you want to get involved in expect long hours were not much sleep.

Not that your mind this, the experience will be incredible! You will spend a few weeks gathering the required footage under the guidance of our experts, and then the final section of the course takes place.

Post-production

With all of your footage obtained it’s time to start editing, you have a movie to make! All the equipment and tools needed will will be provided, and once again you will be expertly taught the best techniques to bring all of your raw footage to life. You will have an introduction to Mac and Final Cut Pro editing software, and an introduction to 3-D editing with 3-D monitors 3-D televisions.

It’s a definite acquired skill to cut down all of this footage that you will have, into 3 min, is the most difficult part of any editors job, picking the best footage. Not to worry though, our team will be there to advise you and help develop your skills.

We will then work on voice-over narration, this can either be done yourself or you can have one of your fellow students do the voice-over depending on your preferences.

We cover topics such as introducing colour grading, laying down voice-over narration and even the finer details such as where to acquire royalty free music and ambient sounds for your film.

In the post-production section of the course we will do a final audio mix, and then finalise your documentary making it compliant with all the regulations for broadcasting and finally exporting it to a customised menu DVD.

Once all of the films from our students have been completed on the final evening we have our screening night.

The final day of the course is yours to enjoy at your leisure, there are plenty of activities to do in the surrounding area (at your own expense) like quad biking hiking whale watching is booked between June and December, you can even go snorkelling with Cape fur seals. There are plenty of adventure activities in the nearby location, canopy tours paragliding mountain biking, surfing and deep sea fishing.

On the final day we will drop you off at the airport (George airport) or you can carry on travelling with new found filmmaking skills under your belt.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tell me more about the location of the course?
The course  takes place in a forest 14 km east of Plettenberg Bay. Set on a privately owned game farm of over 200 characters, there is plenty of wildlife all-round especially plant bird and animal wildlife.

Can you tell me more about the accommodation?
Throughout the course you will be based in dormitory accommodation. There is a fully equipped kitchen, and wooden lodge overlooking rolling valleys of the forest. During your free time there is also Sports fields, swimming pool, guided hikes and many activities to choose from on the side of your wildlife film course.

It would be wrong to visit South Africa are not have a good Braai. So there is a barbecue area…Perfect for star-gazing and catching a glimpse of the fire-flies while sitting around a roaring fire.

What is the weather like there?
In Africa it can get hot surprisingly! However, the Garden route has a Mediterranean maritime climate, with moderately hot summers and mild to chilly winters. Being the southern hemisphere seasons are reversed so in winter (June and July and August) expect a bit of rain mainly brought on by humid sea winds.

The summer months from November to March you can expect warmer days with December to February seeing Midsummer daily temperatures of up to 30°C. Just remember the days maybe bright and warm but in the evenings it can get chilly, especially important as you will be shooting at night time and in the early morning.

Do I have to worry about malaria?
There is no malaria in this part of South Africa, there are mosquitoes though so you will want mosquito repellent.

We make use of this beautiful spot to relax the night before the final drive to the gorillas. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 49/50 Gorillas (Lake Bunyoni)

The mountain gorilla is extremely endangered and while exact numbers vary it is widely assumed that there are only around 650 left. Visiting the gorillas is a great way to support their future on earth as the money spent on permits is used for their protection. An extremely important part of the future conservation of the remaining gorillas rests in the community development work – as local communities change their attitudes towards wildlife and start to protect rather than poach, the future of the mountain gorilla is assured.

As permits granting permission to visit the gorillas are extremely limited we require flexibility in both the tour itinerary and where we actually visit them. The home of the mountain gorillas is completely at odds with man-made borders and so their range encompasses Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo). Whenever possible we choose to make use of the National Park in Uganda, but this depends on the availability of permits.

Should we not obtain permits to visit the mountain gorillas in Uganda then we will inform all passengers beforehand that the tour will travel to Rwanda or DRC.

On your free day in Bunyoni you will have the opportunity to participate in certain optional activities. You can embark on a boat ride to the community of the Batwa (pygmies) who stay in the islands adjacent to the lake to observe their social lifestyle, behaviour and be entertained by their cultural performances. You can also go hiking or explore the area on a mountain bike.

Optional activities: Visit to the Batwa (Pygmies) tribe, mountain biking, nature walk, hiking

Day 49. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Day 50. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Please note: Although there are 2 days allocated to Gorilla Trekking you will only spend one day on the trek. The other day are there to provide a large enough window in which to obtain permits and to allow the entire group to trek if there are more than 6 of you on the tour.

Day 51/52 Queen Elizabeth National Park

Leaving Lake Bunyoni, we venture to the Queen Elizabeth National Park, where we will spend the next 2 nights. Many game species can be found in this wetland park as well as the (elsewhere elusive) giant forest hog and the legendary tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha Sector. We will enjoy an included 4×4 game drive on day 10 through the NP. Optional Activities: Kasinga Channel Sunset Cruise, Chimpanzee trekking at Lake George. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Activity Package: Game Drive

Day 53/54 Jinja

Jinja is Uganda’s second largest city and more famous as the point where the Nile (officially the Victoria Nile) flows out of Lake Victoria and begins the 6695 kilometre journey to Egypt and the Mediterranean. Optional Activities: White Water Rafting. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (Day 11 only), Dinner

Day 55 Kenya – Eldoret

Returning to Kenya we visit Eldoret, the country’s 5th largest city. The Great Rift Valley is still the dominant geographical feature of this region and the altitude at Eldoret is 2100 metres above sea level. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 56 Nairobi

Returning to Nairobi, the largest city in the East Africa region, there’s an optional dinner, where we can swap stories and exchange contact details. Optional Activities: Meal out in Nairobi. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

NB: The itinerary is flexible and can be changed without notice in order to accommodate the best possible viewing of the Gorillas. The Permit price to visit the Gorillas can also change without notice.Accommodation

On our camping tours you will be staying in two-man dome tents. We supply a mattress and you supply your own sleeping bag.

Food and Meals

Included are three hearty meals a day, (unless otherwise specified). Vegetarians are easily catered for and they’re always impressed by our varied menu. Our guides can produce miracles on a camp-stove. Special dietary requirements can be catered for, but only by special request. In East Africa it is more difficult to cater to certain requirements.

Proof of innoculation is required on certain tours.

Day two

After a farmhouse breakfast, a qualified kitesurfing instructor from Wind Sports will meet you. He will take you to the world famous Kitebeach that has an amazing backdrop of Table Mountain and a steady supply of wind and waves. Your first day of lessons will begin with:

Providing the wind conditions have been suitable, you should have completed the course by now, so you are now able to hire some gear and go kitesurfing!

Finished with your kitesurfing? Head out into Cape Town and explore this awesome city. There are plenty of optional extra day trips to get the adrenaline flowing also, like Shark Cage Diving or head out on a safari to a game park. Accommodation

You’ll have such a great time staying at our chilled kitesurf base. What strikes everyone who stays here is not only how awesome the location is (with the undisputed best view of Cape Town and Table Mountain) but the atmosphere of the place is so nice and laid back. The perfect location, 5-10 minutes walk to the bus, 5 minutes walk to the nearest shop/bar and beach.
There is loads going on all the time, a good group of people so you can do lots in your free time, our friendly staff there will help you arrange some very good trips, like the Full Moon hike to Lions Head.

The accommodation is not downtown, however the city centre is highly accessible being only 20mins away, and the gorgeous Kitebeach is where you want to be, not stuck in the hectic hustle and bustle of the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the surf conditions like?
Cape Town  provides good surfing conditions year round on any surf spot at a time, regardless of swell or wind conditions. Wave size and quality range from average to epic, with an assortment of reefs and beach breaks that covers the whole range of surfing skills, from beginners to experienced.
What's the weather like?
The  weather is always good, but don’t forget summer in South Africa is winter in UK.
Are your courses for beginners and people who have never surfed before?
You all are welcome regardless of your surf level: Many of you have never surfed before, some of you want to improve your surf level.
Do I need to be fit to take part?
Being in good physical shape is better as the sport is very demanding. The basics are easy to learn but it is not a sport for the fainthearted.

Be at one with nature, high upon the shoulders of the largest living land mammal, and fall in love on a trunk-in-hand stroll. (Optional extra)

Then it’s on to visit an incredible place: the Cango Caves – an illuminated wonderland of subterranean magic and mystery, with passageways and chambers meandering far below. The group will explore the narrow passages and vast halls filled with colourful ancient stalactites and stalagmites. From here you will venture to the Tsitsikamma National Park where you can explore the marine reserve with its unique combination of dramatic coastal and forest landscapes. Walk along forest trails to a suspension bridge and find a quiet spot from where to absorb this beauty. We will spend the night in Jeffrey’s Bay – the surfer’s paradise!

DAY 8: JEFFERYS BAY TO STORMS RIVER

Today you will be able to visit the Addo Elephant National Park (3-hour bus ride) which was proclaimed in 1931 to provide a safe haven for the few wild elephants who survived government-sponsored culling in the early 20th century. Today the elephants number in their hundreds, thanks to the efforts of the National Parks Board and a unique vegetation type – subtropical thicket, or valley bushveld. It is this thick, impenetrable vegetation that has not only provided protection for the elephants and buffalo in the area, but also provided a rich food source, supporting what is now the densest population of wild elephants on the planet. Our tour concentrates on finding and viewing elephants. There is also an optional two-hour safari in a 4×4 vehicle with a ranger at your own expense. After this you can go for a surf or just chill out in Jeffrey’s Bay. The backpackers hire out surf boards and wetsuits for a fee. We will stop at the Billabong, Rib Curl and Quicksilver factory shops for excellent deals before stopping in Storms River for the night.

DAY 9: STORMS RIVER TO SEDGEFIELD

One of your highlights today as we travel from Storms River to Myoli Beach is the Waterfall Zipline. The eight cable slides, of which the longest is 211m, zigzag across the river gorge, as high as 50m above the water in some places. (optional extra at R350). If you don’t want to zipline experience, then you can go for a walk in the forest. For the very daring, we visit the Bloukrans Bungee Jump – the world’s highest – for anyone who wishes to do this optional extra. Calm your nerves in the holiday town of Knysna which is the next stop. We will make a lunch stop at the Heads, where the sea crashes into two massive sandstone cliffs. After lunch we head off for Wilderness where you will find 18km of beaches cooled by sea spray, five lakes, five rivers and two estuaries. Wilderness is
one of nature’s jewels and is a protected National Park. Canoe on the Wilderness lagoon and watch the bird life while we glide over the water in our pure nature encounter. We will spend the night at Myoli beach.

DAY 10: SEDGEFIELD TO CAPE TOWN

Myoli Beach is an undiscovered paradise and your accommodation is situated right on the beach, perfect for a morning swim before we head back to Cape Town. On our way back you can go on a Lion Walk where you can interact with young lions in a natural setting. We will then head back to the Xtreme Gap backpackers to watch the sun go down over the ocean and share your stories with the guests.

It has an aura of ancient times and offers some of the best opportunities in the world to view Africa’s big game. Day 7: Leave for Swaziland You will depart Kruger for the beautiful Kingdom of Swaziland. Day 7 – 20: Start Community Project

Community project, Ezulwini, Swaziland

Swaziland is Africa’s last remaining true monarchy and in it is unique laid-back way is steeped in Swazi culture and tradition. The Ezulwini Valley of Swaziland is known as the valley of heaven and is both home to the King and royal family and most of the countries tourism facilities and attractions. It is a scenic hilly Kingdom with a friendly age-old way of life that endears anyone who takes the time to experience it.

Community Sports Project

You will spend 10 days working at a community sport facility in a small settlement called Lobamba. The focus of the Sports Development Project is to improve the well being of disadvantaged children within rural Swazi communities, through sport. This project focuses on the following sports – football (soccer), tennis, netball, athletics and table tennis and incorporates both genders between the ages of 7 and 18. The project is based at a facility called OlympAfrica.

Worthy is an understatement

The project is borne out of a need in this tiny but beautiful Kingdom: Approximately 30% of children in Swaziland cannot afford to go to school. Without the structure of an educational institution children are denied the stimulation they need to keep them busy and developing in their formative years. In some cases this lack of structure and resultant boredom can lead children into petty criminal activity at an early age. As a volunteer you will be involved in helping with the day to day coordination of this project. There are sports practice sessions each week day which you would help coordinate. The aim is encourage youths to participate, arrange training and sports activities, to develop sports teams, organise mini competitions and once at the right level, facilitate them to compete in local sports leagues. Getting there & departing.

The Kruger to Coast Sports Adventure starts in Swaziland. If you are travelling from abroad it is usually easiest to fly into the region and usually the cheapest is to fly into Johannesburg in South Africa. From there you can either take a connecting flight to Manzini international airport in Swaziland (takes about 1 hour) using Swazi Airlink (a branch of South African Airways) or take a bus to Swaziland (takes all day but is cheaper) using the Baz bus.
Flying into Swaziland:

Occasionally your luggage may get delayed en route although this is not very common. In such cases your bags will usually arrive on the next flight (or two) so it is wise to bring with you, in your hand luggage, one spare change of clothes and a wash bag. It never hurts to be too prepared!

“I loved every minute of my trip, it was so much fun, and also learned a lot! The best experience for me on this trip was being in Swaziland. In the village i met so many beautiful kids, who came running up to me and the others for cuddles and photographs, loved it!”
Caroline Burt
“My highlight was Mozambique, the beaches were just stunning. Ahhh and the Kruger park off course! “
Brian B
“It was a great trip to the Kruger Park. In two hours we saw the Big Five and on the other days mostly all animals. That was really amazing.”
Melanie Miesterfeld & Melanie Mittl
“Kruger was a great experience! Beautiful surroundings, we saw a lot of animals. Seeing a leopard six times in those days was amazing. Our guides were loads of fun and prepared five star meals for us! Going to Kruger was a dream come true!”
Ellen Wilms
