When is the best time to see a Whaleshark in Koh Tao Thailand?
If you are wondering when is the best time to see a Whaleshark in Koh Tao Thailand? There is no real straight answer. Many believe that for Koh Tao, the best time to see whaleshark is April and August with indescriminate sightings in between. The previous year, there were 3 whalesharks spotted around Koh Tao in April there were daily encounters with divers for almost 2 weeks straight din the final 2 weeks of April. However, to answer when is the best time to see a Whaleshark in Koh Tao correctly, there are lots of factors to take into account.
Whalesharks are nomadic fish and travel large distances, so it really is a lottery, you can be lucky and not so lucky. We have been on dives with open water students, who got their first Whales Shark siting on Dive One.
Speaking from personal experience I have over 200 dives in Koh Tao, and have clocked up 2 Whale Shark sightings. So that is 1/100 chance of seeing one!
Whaleshark encounters on Koh Tao can be very sporadic, however when they do stop by they are known to stay around for several days at a time. Some believe that it apprears to correlate with high densities of plankton in the sea which happens during the full moon as that’s when most coral will release their juvenile stages.
Where is the best place to see a Whaleshark in Koh Tao Thailand?
The 2 best places to see them on Koh Tao are at dive sites a bit further out, this means either chumpon pinnacle or southwest pinnacle. Both of these are deep water sites (depth of 30 metres) some distance out from the Island. They are visited regualrly by dive shops, Chumporn Especially.
