There is something so appealing in wilderness, getting out there, miles from civilisation and realising you and your select group are the only people for miles around. Visiting the Spitzkoppe is no exception. Forgive me if I go a bit earthy on you here, but i think it is something to do with the realisation of where we sit in the world, connecting with nature a little and seeing natural phenomenons that make us feel so small.
The Spitzkoppe is old. Older than your Granny, grannys granny even older still. The granite making up the Spitzkoppe in Namibia is more than 700 million years old and it is stunningly impressive to see. The highest point rises about 1784 meters (5857 feet) above sea level.
The Spitzkoppe is a group of bald granite peaks or bornhardts located between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Namib desert. The peaks stand out dramatically from the flat surrounding plains. The highest peak is about 700m above the floor of the desert below. On many of our Africa Overland Tours you can see the Spitzkoppe and form many it is a great photo opportunity, for others it is s just a surreal place to be, like visiting Ayers Rock in Australia, there is something just nessassacry in visiting a very old rock in the middle of the dessert.
It is not just Xtreme Gappers on an Africa Overland Truck tour who have visited the Spitzkoppe, Many examples of Bushmen artwork can be seen painted on the rock in the Spitzkoppe area dating back centuries.
