As I am writing this I am sitting in the back of a rangitata Raft van heading back from the whitewater rafting trip enroute to Christchurch. I have a confession to make. Being the director of a travel company has allowed me to visit many spectacular places around the world, there are increasingly few places on my personal must do list left, but New Zealand was always up there. Tempting me to pay her a visit. Sadly I never did, well technically i HAVE BEEN TO New Zealand before, but that was for 3 days mostly in Auckland and does not really count in my opinion. But now, finally I am here, I was a little anxious that it would not live up to the hype. Thankfully it has. Words like amazing and “stunning” are easy options to describe a place, my trip to the Rangitata gorge has caused me to reassess my values. Simply put this place is a little piece of paradise.
Chilled out and incredible views of the Southern Alps, coupled with bright colours of lush pastures and bluer than blue sky (caused by a lack of Ozone layer – due to French nuclear testing in the south pacific) and White peaks rising up on the horizon is a feast for the eyes. There are many places I would like to compare it too, the vast landscapes of South Africa, the rolling hills of the nicest parts of England, but quite frankly nothing comes close. You just have to visit new Zealand for yourself to get it. The views are great, but that is not all I like about New Zealand. The people are really fun. Kiwis have a great sense of humour and hospitality combined. If you are considering a gap year. Have a New Zealand Gap Year.
