Kat and Pete hit Thailand

Hello all,

Peter and I are enjoying our time here in Thailand. We are staying in a hostel site near Bangkok called Singburi.  There are about 20-30 other travelers here and we have met some awesome people, though most of them are Swedish!

Yesterday we went on a trip to the old capital city and saw lots of temples and Buddha’s, it was very interesting. We also saw lots of Elephants and some of them could do tricks! There are a lot of Stray Dog’s here, they are everywhere but they are very cute and completely harmless.

When we visited the temples we had to take off our shoes and cover our shoulders, inside the temples were big statues and pictures of Buddha’s everywhere, it was stunning.

I have to make this quick because I am using a friends laptop, so it also means I am not going to have time to spell check (Sorry), unless you count Spell-Pete-check as he is now going through it!

In Thailand they have a few things that we have, like they have Tesco, Subway, KFC. But the food is very different but fresh and very tasty. We have had rice and chicken a lot, as well as watermelon and pineapple, and Pete is doing his best to try most foods, he actually likes some of the dishes! The food is very healthy.

The weather is very hot and its around 32C everyday, but no sunburn yet (touch wood). We went to another market, supermarket and department store this afternoon and inside we saw Christmas decorations and they were playing jingle bells, which was strange for us because it feels like Christmas was months ago, because of the heat here.

We are spending the next couple of days here before heading back to the heart of Bangkok to stay in a nice hotel for a night. We then travel south by coach to catch a boat to the island of Koa Tao where we spend 12 days relaxing on the white sandy beaches and snorkelling in the clear blue sea!

Today we had Thai language lessons and tomorrow we are learning some Thai cooking, which should be interesting.
So I promised to let you know how we got on with the little scooter we rented out. Well we got it out for five days and the lady took my passport hostage for the five days which was worrying but all the places here do it and we got it back. I taught Pete how to ride it and he was pretty good, but we decided I would drive it with him on the back. Which is something I have never had to do before, but we got on OK.

We explored the island, it’s quite small so it didn’t take long, we found some great beaches in the south, one called freedom beach which is a favourite. And in the north is nothing but rocks and an awesome view point looking out to the other islands. A group of three island’s right next to Koh Toa, they are all connected by a strip of sand, it looks amazing.

We have been pretty relaxed here and haven’t yet had time to book another Yoga session in, but we did have our massage. I have a bit of a bad back so we opted out of the Thai massage, we both had oil massages which was really nice and relaxing.

We have discovered that eating Western food is about double or triple in price so we are now trying to only eat Thai food. We are trying lots of new things and most of the time have no clue what we have just ordered and get a surprise when it is brought out. Our favourite place to eat is a little restaurant by our resort called Tik.

We found Crazy golf, Pete said it is the best one he has played on, and I have to say, it was pretty impressive. He won by 20 shots though, even though i did beat him on the first 9 holes!! We also went to the animal hospital here and they told us all about the animals and the good work they do.

Oliver and Debbie from Xtreme Gap, are going to put our emails in a blog on their website. When they get that all up and running I shall let you know, so that you can access our blog on their website too.

We have more bugs here. This time the problem is located in the bathroom. And it’s Ants! We have no clue where they are coming from, they just won’t leave us alone. We get someone to come kill them everyday, we have even had someone come with poly-filler to go along the top of the tiles. They are under the tiles and keep coming in. I have no clue what they are after.

Last night was scary! Our room is near the road, and last night we were woken by a bang and screaming. It kept me up most of the night because I freaked myself out and wouldn’t look out the window to find out what had happened. Pete fell back asleep pretty fast and this morning we found out what happened. Our next door neighbours friend was hit by a drunk driver on a motorbike. And I was worried it could be the Mafia or something!

Today we spent the day at the beach, it was hot and sunny as usual and it got too hot to sit in the sun so Pete and I went in the warm sea before heading back to the resort and going in their pool.

We leave in a couple of days and spend one night in Bangkok before flying to Sydney and getting our connecting flight to Darwin, before we head to Kununara a day later, in the North!

See you in AUS!

P.s. hope to upload more photo’s soon!
