An established Asia Gap year backpacking route to take would be visiting Thailand and then heading to Vientiane in Laos from Bangkok by bus. From Laos it is possible to fly into Hanoi in Vietnam and head down through the country, to Saigon then back to Thailand through Cambodia. there are so many highlights of such a trip you can find out more by downloading our free gap year backpacker guide, or calling us to have a chat about your plans.
South East Asia Gap years are the perfect place to start if you have not done any extensive travelling before, generally speaking S.E. Asia is very easy to get around, both by over land transport and flying. Inexpensive trains and bus companies are well establishes at taking travellers to where they want to go, and if you are in a hurry a little airline called Air Asia is a godsend (imagine Easy Jet in Asia, but much cheaper).
Going further west, you reach India and Nepal. A Nepal gap year is a great option to consider if you want a real Asia gap year adventure. Flying in to Kathmandu you will no doubt be charmed by the warmth of the people and the quite stunning Buddhist traditions. All of this set against one of the worlds most impressive backdrops - the Himalayas. If you want an Asia gap year, that represents adventure travel personified, head to Nepal and take on the worlds greatest white water rafting trip - rafting down the Sun Kosi river. After you have wrung out your clothes and spat out several tonnes of melt water streaming from some of the worlds highest peaks, you can then take on one of the worlds greatest treks, Mount Everest base camp. This is not "great" because of its difficulty, as it is a tough walk, rather than an ice axe wielding mission, it is great because if you pick the right season, the moment Mount Everest comes into view, as the light hits it, it will quite literally take your breath away.
Nepal is no unique for providing incredible travel moments, Asia gap years are jam packed with them, moments that come in many shapes and sizes. Everyone has their own memories and moments, whether that be tearing through Bangkok hanging off the back of a Tuk Tuk, sitting out on the street on impossibly small plastic chairs in Saigon (Ho Chi Mihn City) drinking a class of beer for 12p, haggling with the night market merchants in VangVien... the list goes on.
Asia gap years are also popular due to the fact they offer great value for money. Subsistence living is easy in these countries, stretching your gap year budget a lot further. In Thailand you can eat out for £2, less if you take some pad Thai on the street (try 25 pence), in Laos and Cambodia, even less. Shopping, clothes, toiletries even backpacks and electrical goods are dirt cheap, ok, not everything is great quality (buy some sunglasses and see how long they last!), but much of it is, and it is guaranteed to be cheaper than buying stuff back home. As will all travelling it is always Alcohol that early eats into your budget like nothing else, In South East Asia (except in Malaysia and Indonesia due to their majority Muslim populations) a this is not so much of an issue, but be warned they serve whiskey by the bucket, so take it easy (on the first night at least)...
