Winter ( June to September ) is cooler and drier, and perfect for hiking and out of doors pursuits. Safaris are great at this time of year as foliage is less dense, and parched animals congregate around watering holes, making spotting them easier. Winter is also the ideal time for wildlife-watching.

Summer ( late Nov to March ) brings rain, mists and in the lowveld some blisteringly scorching days. Along the Indian Ocean coastline, conditions are sultry and tropical, with high humidity. More of a consideration than weather are college vacations. From mid-December to Jan , waves of vacation-hungry South Africans stream out of the towns, with visitors from Europe and North America adding to the crush.
The best time to visit south Africa is probably to mid-January, followed by Easter. Accommodation in visitor areas and nationwide parks can get pretty booked out and this can lead to costs increasing by at least double. Spring (mid-September to Nov) and autumn (Apr and May) pretty much perfect everywhere..
