The Okavango delta in Botswana is a huge swamp teeming with wildlife. It is formed where the Okavango River empties onto a swamp in an endorheic basin in the Kalahari Desert. Apart from the myriad of fish and plants that live there the Okavango Delta is probably most famous for its wildlife:
Species include African Bush Elephant, African Buffalo, Hippopotamus, Lechwe, Topi, Blue Wildebeest, Giraffe, Nile crocodile, Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Brown Hyena, Spotted Hyena, Greater Kudu, Sable Antelope, Black Rhinoceros, White Rhinoceros, Plains Zebra, Warthog and Chacma Baboon.

Of interest to many the endangered African Wild Dog still survives within the Okavango Delta, and it is here that you find one of the richest pack densities in Africa. The Okavango delta also has well over 400 species of birds, including African Fish Eagle, Crested Crane, Lilac-breasted Roller, Hammerkop, Ostrich, and Sacred Ibis.

Most people on our Africa Overland Tours visit the Delta as they head through Botswana, but if you have the extra cash lying around, something not to be missed is a scenic flight over the area. This really gives you a sense of scale and an overview of the delta that you just can get on the ground.
