Backpacking Australia: Hints and Tips.

Backpacking Australia is great for people on  a gap year in Australia. With such a great backpacking industry set up you will find backpacking Australia easy and fun.

The first thing you need to consider when considering backpacking Australia is the distances. They are huge. Austraila is a country  but also a continent. It is so diverse that backpacking Australia requires some planning and budgeting to get you to see all you desire before your budget runs out.

Fortunately for people backpacking Australia, the Australian government can grant you a working holiday visa, allowing you to top up your travel funds allowing your Australia backpacking experience to be extended.   Not everyone wants to work while they go backpacking in Australia of course, some just want to take time out and enjoy all their time away having the most amount of fun possible.

What people choose to do while they are away depends on their interests but here are some of the most popular activities people undertake while backpacking Australia.

Most popular activities for people backpacking Australia

When backpacking in Australia you will discover plenty to do.  Much of the Australian population lives near the coast making water sports and activities very popular.

surfing

Surfing being one of the most popular activities.  If you want to learn to surf, Australia   gives you the perfect opportunity. Many get hooked, buy a board and then chase the waves up the east coast. Surfing is so popular in Australia that they even named one of the larger cities surfers paradise!

Diving

Diving in Australia is also superb, the great barrier reef the worlds largest living organism harbours millions of species of tropical fish and is one of the world best dive locations. Many learn to dive in Australia as part of their backpacking Australia experience.
Most of the great barrier reef diving takes place in Cairns, however many choose to dive around the Whitsunday Islands, which is also located on the great barrier reef (In the southern extremities).

Sailing & Beaches

Sailing the Whitsundays  is also a popular part of the Australia backpacking experience. A collection of paradise islands and long stretches of whiter than white beaches make this a highlight of any Australian backpacking trip. Whitehaven beach, is a picture post card example of the perfect beach!

Continuing the beach theme, another favourite of people backpacking Australia is to go on a 4x4 self drive safari on Fraser Island.  This is a World heritage site and spans over 123 km in length and 22 km at the widest point. It is the biggest  sand island in the world. Fraser island is un deniably  beautiful, with long uninterrupted white beaches amazingly beautiful sand cliffs, and more than 100 freshwater lakes. Going in groups you are able to hire land cruisers of land rovers and head out to the island for a 2 or 3 nights camping.

The easiest way to combine all these activities is with the Australia experience programme.

Travelling the East coast of Australia is probably the busiest backpacker route, mainly due to the concentration of cool activities up the east coast and the fact that the majority of cities and Australias population live along the east coast. Many start in Sydney (taking a Sydney arrival package making the start of their Australia backpacking trip easier), although others like to start with a Melbourne Arrival package then head up the great Ocean Road to Sydney.

Backpacking the east coast of Australia means doing many thousands of miles on the road, but how to cover the distance?
One of the most popular ways of covering the distance is using a backpacking Australia bus network like the Oz experience. For the east coast you specifically need the Oz Experience Bruce Pass (if travelling North) or the Oz Experience Cobber Pass (if  travelling south from Cairns to Sydney or Melbourne).

Others choose to take a grey hound bus, this is not specifically designed for backpackers, but effective all the same. If you have with less time on their hands and wishing to travel in a fixed group will take and adventure tour like this east coast tour.

For those that prefer the freedom of their own schedule, they consider hiring or buying a car. Other more hard core people buy a camper can and sleep in it!

Wicked Campers are a popular option based on this principal, but a word to the wise, if you choose to do this your will have a different Australia backpacking experience. Campsites and lay-bys are far less sociable than backpackers and hostels, so if meeting people is key, go for the oz experience.
