Day 1: Vancouver & Kelowna, Okanagan Valley

From Vancouver, we cross the up-and-down landscape of grey, snow-dusted mountains and dark conifers. Set within a glorious range of mountains; Kelowna is blessed with lakes, pine forests, vineyards and beaches. We set up camp beside a pristine glinting lake, far removed from the city you started in, before you enjoy getting to know your fellow travellers on your first evening together in wine country.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 2-3: Yoho National Park

View the alpine meadows of Mount Revelstoke National Park en route to Yoho National Park. Hike or negotiate the rapids of the well-named Kicking Horse River. In any case, the tumbling cascades, glassy lakes and glinting peaks are drop-dead gorgeous… not to mention the glaciers. Your leader will take you to see some of the most incredible vistas within Yoho national Park, first Takakkaw Falls falling from the mountains to the valley below, followed by the incredible Emerald Lake with its glacial hues forest backdrop.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 4-5: Banff National Park

Boot up, saddle up and breathe in the crisp alpine air where nature’s bonanza includes beavers, bears, porcupines and elk. Ride the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain’s peak and recharge your batteries in the heavenly hot springs.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 6: Lake Louise

A nickname like the “gem of the Rockies” is a lot to live up to, but it’s no sweat for Lake Louise. The imposing château looks on as mountains cluster round the turquoise surface. As for you, well, you could always hike out to the Plain-of-Six-Glaciers or inspect the scene by paddle power on an optional canoe trip.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 7-8: Jasper National Park

The widescreen scenery keeps on coming. The breathtaking Icefields Parkway provides a peach of a drive with panoramic views of endless valleys, sheer ridges, glaciers and spruce forests – truly one of the world’s ultimate drives. Jasper’s wildlife puts up a fight for your attention too; the sharp-eyed may glimpse grizzlies, wolves or caribou. This sprawling natural expanse offers bike trails, helicopter flights and ice-walks through the most spectacular scenery that the Canadian Rockies offers.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 9: Wells Grey Provincial Park

The stillness, silence and isolation go up another notch. Drive through secluded Wells Gray and experience the stunning vistas of high mountains, deep canyons, volcanic cones, brooding old-growth forests and raging white-water waterfalls – you’ve never seen anything like it. Nature surely never felt closer.

Accommodation: Camping included

Day 10-11: Whistler

Travel the old Gold Rush trail through Cache Creek and on to the adventure capital of Western Canada! Perhaps better known as a winter resort, Whistler has plenty of heart-pumping action and well as being an area of stunning beauty all year round.

Day 12: Vancouver

Return to Vancouver along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, and stop by Stanley Park, a 4,000-hectare green wonderland. Stop by Prospect Point, a scenic lookout where you gaze out at spectacular views of Lion’s Gate Bridge, North Vancouver and West Vancouver – the perfect ending to the perfect trip!

How we are different

The main focus at our camp is personal rider improvement in all types of fun and challenging terrain on the mountains. We ski and ride lots of off-piste, powder, tree runs, natural freestyle runs, wind lips, small cliffs, cornices, pillow lines, parks, pipes, runs not on the trail maps and other terrain types you can and can’t imagine! We take full advantage of the best terrain and help you experience and realise a whole new way of riding mountains. We don’t consider ourselves a traditional ‘gap year’ or ‘career break’ type of program in which you would usually spend most of your mountain time preparing for your instructor exams. We do ride on groomed runs, but not necessarily practising snowboard drills or exercises. We’re different, we’re exciting and you’ll love it!

Coaches and Pros

The right coach makes all the difference to your camp experience, which is why we have carefully compiled an all-star group of experienced coaches and pros. We are fully certified with years of coaching experience, are long time locals with intimate knowledge of Whistler-Blackcomb and its sweet-spots, and have larger-than-life personalities. We are committed to completely improving your skiing/riding and we’re stoked to show you the best terrain these mountains have to offer.

Unrivalled Mountain Knowledge

We have been living and riding in Whistler for most of our lives, and it’s because of this that we know the absolute best spots to ride- every hidden powder run and secret spot on the mountains! Our excitement to share our knowledge provides campers an unparalleled riding experience, and campers always express their thanks for this! Imagine arriving at a new resort and suddenly riding only the best terrain for every day’s snow conditions. Yes please! This important point really does make all the difference. We know all the secret spots, hidden fun runs, jump runs, powder runs behind walls of trees, deep powder spots, un-tracked powder runs, cool tree runs, hidden cliffs and drops, deserted groomers and cruisers. We’ve hit every jump, every bump and every jib around every corner! Even seasoned Whistler locals don’t know the spots we know- we’re that good. Whistler and Blackcomb’s terrain is huge- you’ll understand when you get here!

Low Camper-to-Coach Ratio

Our low ratios mean lots of personal feedback, focus and attention. Training within a small group of a similar level is a great way to promote learning and to keep it personal. We have a low camper-to-coach ratio, which averages 4:1. We also keep our overall weekly campers number low so that everybody really gets to know each other. The only problem with this is that it makes it more difficult for you to leave!

Improvement and Confidence

Snowboarding or skiing with someone at a higher level than you- visually seeing it done right- riding in a small group where everyone is pushing each other to succeed- and focused, immediate feedback is the fastest way to improvement. This is how it’s done with us! You push yourself, your confidence and each other every day, and sometimes without even knowing it! Combine all of this with riding the best terrain of the day and a smiling, positive group – it will all catapult your progress and comfort level. Tried, tested and true, this results in real snowboard improvement. That’s how we roll.

Comfortable Accommodation

We provide clean, bright and modern housing for all of our campers. All of our houses have WiFi, laundry facilities, cable TV, phones, bedding and fully supplied kitchens. Each house is fully furnished with two beds in each room. The house locations range from walking distance to the village to a short bus ride (5-10 minutes).

The Full Monty

Our attention to detail means your camp experience is the complete package! We’re in the business of providing an unparalleled mountain camp with all the bells and whistles, not to mention taking care of the small details. We aim to create unforgettable memories for you. We include weekend lift tickets, local bus passes, hot tub-sauna-pool passes, free stuff from our sponsors and full season passes (not ‘mid week’ season passes). From the moment you arrive here in Whistler you are taken care of with the highest level of service campers have come to expect from us. The only thing you are responsible is for your food and drink. We are flexible on all issues surrounding your stay, whatever will enhance it for you is what we will strive to do! And when the chairlifts stop – our evening activities and social events begin. If you have the energy, we have a big list of fun stuff to experience each night.

The Social Aspect

The social aspect of camp is also something that brings campers back year after year. We plan lots of evening activities and social events in and around Whistler. Your after-riding and weekend schedule can be as busy or mellow as you choose. Here are some things you can do:

Weekly welcome drinks – Friday grad parties – video clinics – equipment waxing – night snow tubing – cinema nights – indoor gym sports – ice skating – sauna & hot tub soaks – window shopping – people watching – shop browsing – pub nights – night clubbing – weekend Vancouver trips – snowmobiling – dog sledding – cat boarding – heli boarding – snow shoeing – zip trekking – Tarzan swinging – x country skiing… there’s too much to list!

Who can join?

We offer camps for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, from confident novice to aspiring pro athletes and every level in between! Customized package camps are available for beginners. Please contact us for customized packages.

Canada Ski Instructor and Snow Board Instructor Course Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the Xtreme Gap snow sports instructor courses over others?

You will notice a lot of training organisations offering ski instructor courses. These companies only include CSIA/CASI level 1 in the actual course fees… But if you read the fine print anything beyond that is at an extra cost. (CSIA/CASI LEVEL 2 is usually required if students want any chance to obtain a working visa sponsorship the following year).

Some try to fluff up their programs by including a very basic avalanche day or a 1 day first aid course but these for the most part are not accredited courses. With our course, we include all the training fees, and provide you with a 40 hour wilderness training course. Our students come away more highly qualified and ready to hit a competitive snow sports instructor jobs market.

What kind of jobs can I get after completion of the course?
With all the certifications and experience you gain on this program you really should not have any difficulties finding work as a ski or snowboard instructor at resorts all over the world. Some graduates may be eligible to return to Mt. Washington Resort for employment the following year. We will often act as a reference for alumni looking for employment in the industry. For those looking to pursue a career guiding in the backcountry this program will give you many of the prerequisites required for further training.
Do I need a visa to enter Canada?

Well you should be at an “intermediate” level or higher, if you want to start the course. You should be comfortable on blue runs (which confusingly are Red runs in Europe).
How much spending money will I need?
You will need money for breakfasts, lunches on the hill and meals on weekends. Most people also like to go for a few drinks at the end of the day or out to movies etc. Furthermore if you wish to take part in some of the extra curricular road trips and adventures there will be additional costs. The amount you spend can vary greatly and although many people can get by on much less, an average budget is between $100 – $250 CAD per week, which is around 60 to 160GBP. The biggest expense for some people is beer in the pub about 5 to 6.50CAD for a pint. And for food anywhere from 25CAD (eat in on the cheap) to a maximum of 125CAD (eat out) per week.
What kind of insurance will I need?
If you are not covered by Canada’s health care system, you will need travel medical insurance (this is mandatory). Make sure your insurance covers you for adventure sports. You may also wish to purchase trip cancellation insurance in case of sickness or injury, which prevents you from completing the course (optional).
Am I guaranteed to pass all the exams?
There are no guarantees. The certifications such as the CSIA level 2 ski instructor certification, CASI level 2 snowboard instructor certification and the Wilderness First Aid course have quite high standards. We do, however, promise to provide the best possible training for you to be successful. We exams are achievable by most people who apply themselves and train hard. In some cases it is possible to be re-examined at a later date although additional exam fees may apply.
Is there skiing on days off?
Does a bear poop in the woods? Yes. So ski through them a little quicker in Canada. The course cost covers a full season pass for Mt. Washington Resort, which is also good for night skiing/riding and the resorts world class cross-country ski area. You will also have the opportunity to visit North Vancouver Island’s great little community ski hill… Mt. Cain.
What about the night life?
There will be plenty of opportunities to party! Although we try to focus a little more on ski and snowboard training and leadership development than some other “gap year” programs. We still know the value of being able to let loose.
Are you guaranteed a job after the course?
No company can actually guarantee a job (although some claim to). Provided you are successful on the course and present with a good working attitude, then we will recommend you for employment with the Mount Washington Snow school for the following season. So far everyone who we have ever recommended has been employed. The snow school will then sponsor you for a working visa to come back to Canada and there is no need to apply for one. Graduates of our 12 week course are generally hired on full time for the following ski season (December to April) although shifts can vary.
Can I get recommendations if I apply somewhere else?
If you would prefer to try somewhere new, then we are happy to act as references. Our graduates are working in the industry all over the world. Having all seven certifications included in the course will give you a distinct advantage. (Much of our competition actually offer the equivalent of our 4 week basic course in an 11 week package to make it look comparable. But if you look at the fine print they are not).
What are the wages for a ski and snowboard instructor in Canada?
Starting wages in Canada are pretty low compared to some skiing nations. It will be around $12 per hour, but increase significantly with experience, further qualifications and the ability to gain return clientele. Request lessons pay significantly more.
What other activities will we be doing?
We organize free or inexpensive activities on weekends, but we also organize some optional extra curricular trips. For example going to Vancouver for an NHL hockey game and usually costs around 250 to 300CAD. You can also do bungee jumping costs around 100CAD. Sounds expensive but most other stuff we do is cheap or free.
What does the equipment costs in Canada?
Used equipment will costs between 250 and 450CAD. New equipment between 500 and 1400CAD. (Depending on his tastes and what you actually need). We do get 25% discount at the local ski shop.
