Adventure Week Options

Elephant Week

Trekking Week

Buddhism & Culture Week

Take Your Pick when you’re in Thailand!

If you do not know which option week you would like to be your second week do not worry, you can make that decision once you are out in Thailand. It might be that you want to hook up with some people if you have become friends with on the intro week and decide to join them on the trekking week, or maybe you rather join someone else who decided to do the Buddhism week. It is very easy to go with the flow! So let’s look at some of the options.

Elephant Week

With this adventure week option you will learn how to ride the Elephants, head off through forests and around the camp on their backs, bath them and feed them. Even go swimming with them. This week is an unrivaled opportunity to learn about Elephants and connect with your very own. Just be warned you can´t take it with you when your week is up!

Elephant Week in detail

Thai Elephant Experience in Umphang, Lak Province

From monolithic temple protrusions, to the living, breathing, legendary white elephant herds of the royal order, the faded beer vests of Khao San Road travellers, to the somewhat infamous, green and gold labels of ‘Chang’, if there is one symbol that reverberates the mystical and multifarious character of this Eastern land more than any other, it is the Thai Elephant. Historically, the Thai people’s ally in work and war, at once both strong and placid, roaming the jungle smothered hills of a nation curiously similar in spirit and character to these colossal yet graceful beasts, the decline in wild elephant populations all over Southeast Asia has focused modern attention more vigorously than ever on the enduring character, survival and habitats of the Asian elephant.

We’re offering you the chance to really get stuck in; with our week long Thai elephant experience package in Umphang, you’ll be surrounded by trunk and tree from begging to end, living and working ‘at the coalface’ with these undeniably inspiring creatures. Nestled in the limestone valleys of Tak Province in North-central Thailand, amidst the low mists of rice paddies (the local labour staple), soaring Burmese mountain horizons to the west, and some of the most traditional, untouched, ‘un-touristy’ Thai towns of yesteryear, where the local folk still cast curious glances at western visitors and sizzle up regional dishes from fiery track-side stalls.

The Elephant Experience

Our elephant experience package runs from Monday to Saturday and aims to give you an encompassing introduction to what life is like working with these animals. We try to make sure you get the broadest possible experience by getting you working with elephants of all ages and genders, always in their natural habitat.

Naturally the elephants are free to roam the project grounds during the day, when you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities necessary to providing good care, whilst helping to ensure the stability of the elephants’ lives here.

With rich, thick, natural jungle terrain and forested hills typical to this region of Thailand, we are lucky to be able to maintain an environment very similar to that enjoyed by the remaining few thousand wild elephants in Southeast Asia, and, with only a few elephant sanctuaries so indelibly surrounded by nature, our ability to do this is largely unique throughout the country.

The elephant care at our sanctuary is comprehensive, and we like to get participants involved with all aspects of this. From health-care check-ups and veterinary procedures, to washing the elephants in the natural lake (one of many in the areas surrounding Umphang) on our grounds, or perhaps, simply socialising with these animals, so strangely human in their own way, your responsibilities are wide ranging and aim to give a broad cross-section of elephant care experience.

In addition, with a diet of up to 180kg of vegetation daily, you can see how preparing the elephants’ intake of greens (usually a mixture of locally sourced sugarcane, banana plant or grasses) could represent one of your main daily tasks, while the routine evening ‘trek of the elephants’ back to their forest sleeping areas as the pink Thai sun drops behind the distant hill vistas, is something to always look forward to.

You will work directly with experienced native mahouts (elephant carers) who have grown up with these creatures, training them and ensuring their continued survival. Consequently, there are perhaps no people more readily in tune with the elephant mind than native Thai mahouts, and no better people with whom to experience what life with an elephant is like.

Every group will be assigned their own English speaking tour coordinator, who will be able to answer any practical questions you have about the structure of the experience or the practicalities of staying in Thailand.

Other Activities

Umphang is one of the few remaining untouched and remote, natural gems of Thailand. Like Kanchaniburi to the south, it retains the reputation as one of the ‘jump-off points’ (no pun intended) for waterfall enthusiasts and, aside from the Thee Lor Sue on the Mae Klong (which is claimed to be Thailand’s biggest, a two day organised trek from Umphang), there are two local falls (Nam Tok Tharark and Nam Tok Pha), with fresh, cool water; a place to distress your post-work muscles and swap elephant stories with your fellow travellers.

You’ll also be able to tick off one of north Thailand’s must-do activities: Rafting. The local medium-speed rivers provide the perfect raft ride through remote jungle scenery, and it’s a great way to spend a day away from the project.

Accommodation during the week

Thailand just wouldn’t be Thailand without its bamboo, jungle shrouded cabins, looking like they’ve just popped up from the earth, just like the waxy banana plants and bending palms around them. During your stay here you’ll crash in one fully equipped with all the necessities of a rural Thai excursion: Mosquito nets, showers, and sun drenched decking for those cold Changs after a long day with the elephants.

You will receive three square meals a day, all healthy and packed full of the rich flavours Thai cuisine has become so famous for. We try and strike a nice balance between western styles and the spiced-up, aromatic local dishes of Umphang, to keep everything nice and varied.

Accommodation is shared with other experience participants, giving you a great opportunity to socialise with like-minded, elephant-loving people.

Trekking in the Jungle

Trekking in the Jungle in detail

During the second week you and other participants have the option to go trekking in the jungle and rainforest of the Phutoei National Park, a lush park not often visited by other tourists.

This again will be a unique experience. You will be roughing it, but in beautiful surroundings. After this experience, you will have a lot to boast about when you go home as you will be sleeping in tents and surviving with the basics – we’re sure you will have a lot of fun!

The trekking option is fully guided by trained national park rangers, so you will be in safe hands but it is certainly an adventure!

Please note this is not for the fainthearted, sorry roughing it and trekking is not for you do not pick this option!

Buddhism & Culture Week

Buddhism & Culture Week

It is quite a ride to get here from the location of the introduction week, but totally worth it! Your time will be spend in the Forest Resort, a luxury new resort and in a newly built dorm accommodation next to the ancient Thai temple.
If you choose the Buddhism & Culture week you will get to know a lot more about Buddhism and Thai culture. During this week you will visit temples, you have the opportunity to ask your questions about Buddhism to the monks, we will teach you about practicing meditation and chanting in a quiet and spiritual environment. Our guide is very knowledgeable and will tell you all you need to know. If you have a real interest in Buddhism & Culture, this is the programme for you!

Remember you do not have to to decide which option you pick when you book, you can wait to see what takes your fancy when you are in Thailand.

Bangkok Stopover

In between heading to Koh Tao and finishing your option weeks you have 2 full days in Bangkok (One if you are on the elephant option).
You will arrive at the bus station on the Saturday (the elephant option arrives on the Sunday morning) and need to make your own way to the hotel. Full instructions are provided in the predeparture pack and your customer log-in account. and this is a £4 taxi ride from the bus station.
There is no set itinerary for Bangkok, but there is plenty to do you can see and do. You will be staying next to the Khao San Road in a 4 star hotel, so you can chill by the pool, or visit many of the sites Bangkok has to offer.

Staying the Saturday night for one night in Bangkok you then transfer to Koh Tao by night bus and boat on Sunday night, you need to get yourself to the bus departure point by this is very easy as shown in the video below.

Click here to see the transfer video

This means you will arrive in Koh Tao first thing on the Monday where we will pick you up off the boat.

Then Onto Paradise – Itinerary For Koh Tao Beach and Action Weeks

The Koh Tao beach week and action itinerary is flexible because it depends on the option you choose for the action week but in general you have 12 days to check out the amazing beaches, get involved in some cool adventures with your new friends and enjoy the epic nightlife.

You will also have your adventure day and hit the full moon party in Koh Phangan so there will be plenty to do and certainly never a dull moment!

On arrival you will have a full introduction from our resident rep who will settle you into the island life and it will go like this:

  • You arrive by night bus and boat on Monday morning where you will be picked up and taken to your accommodation.
  • Once you are checked in, you have time to relax, jump in the pool and freshen up.
  • In the afternoon around 4 our Rep Miss Jai will meet you and the rest of the group at the bar and give you an intro to Koh Tao. She will show you round, tell you the essentials, and show you where everything is like ATMs, pharmacies, beaches and activity locations. She is on hand through out the week if you need her too.
  • You will then go out for dinner (on us) with the rest of the group, expect a tasty Thai curry! The next day you will be taken by miss Jai to start your activity, depending on the option you have picked the itinerary will be as follows.

Koh Tao….Wow.

Koh Tao has some of the best beaches in Thailand, it is also one of the most popular backpacker hubs in South East Asia, but not ruined like some of the other islands, there is a great community and vibe to the place you are going to love spending time here.

We have many Xtreme Gappers resident on the Island as we run lots of different trips there so there is lots going on. It is also a great place to learn to dive as well, so you can take advantage of getting your PADI Open water while you are there as well.
This part of the trip is all about being social and having fun, you can take long tail boat trips round the island, enjoy amazing Thai food and stay up all night in some of the best beach clubs and bars in Asia. After a few days of chill, you will want to pick up the pace again, so we finish the trip with the action week! The Koh Tao adventure day is the perfect end to the week.

Food and eating out

Please note we do not include food in Koh Tao,there are plenty of restaurants serving delicious and healthy Thai food as little as one pound per meal and there is a restaurant the resort also.

We do not include food because it’s such a sociable atmosphere  with so many great places to eat and explore you will want to go off and eat out with lots of new friends. Including food would really limit your options and detract from the whole experience.

We will take you out for a lovely Thai meal on your first evening in Koh Tao though.

The Adventure Day!

During the action week you will do an awesome adventure day around the island: we have lined up some cool activities like abseiling, snorkling and zip lining to get the pulse racing!

Final Weeks:  Action Options, Beach Time & Fullmoon Party

We have lined up some really exciting activities for your final 12 days. This is one of the things that sets the Xtreme Thailand experience apart from other gap year tours. With the sheer volume of inclusions you will never be bored. Pick one of the activities below for your final week.

Some are Xtreme and really get the blood pumping, others are devoted to health, fitness and well-being and you can even be involved in a hands-on conservation project to try and help with the preservation of Koh Tao. There is truly something for everyone.

Learning how to compost, well monitoring, creating gardens from reused beer bottles, erosion control work, edible landscaping, installing rainwater tanks, creating a biogas digestor, seed saving, and other similar activities.

Also, if something is happening at the save Koh Tao office related to the marine conservation group, such as working on artificial reef structures or preparing for a community workshop or event, then you would be involved in this as well.

Nightlife & Beach Time

Koh Tao is not only famous for its great diving and beautiful beaches, there is quite a party scene there too! Picture cool beach bars, fire shows, awesome night clubs like Moov and Fizz bar all within easily stumbling distance to your accommodation. If you want to have some serious fun after the sun sets, you will not be disappointed.

This is a great way to finish up on your trip, after experiencing the culture its time to party. Speaking of which…

The Full Moon Party. Party Boat Included!

You can´t go to Thailand and miss the full moon party. That would be criminal! So we arrange a trip over to Koh Phangan for the night to party your butt off at Haad Rin, and then after the sun comes up it is back to Koh Tao for a well deserved sleep in the ultra comfortable resort avoiding the messy crowds left in Koh Phangan.

This is a much better option than staying in Koh Phangan because it allows you to get in and get out while staying on a much nicer island.

The Full Moon Party is one of the once in a life time experiences and a great way to finish your Thailand Experience. There are some estimates predict there are up to 10,000 people who attend the party hard to predict but it is great fun and very busy. Be sure to leave all of your valuables in Koh Tao not take things like cameras and sunglasses with you. Oh and you will lose your flip-flops. They may have cost you less than a pound to buy but probably several hours to pick! Way too many flip flops to choose from.

Accommodation

Because you stay in various different locations throughout the trip accommodation does vary, however expect to stay in comfortable and clean and secure accommodation. Of the islands you will stay in a luxury resort, with a swimming pool set in beautiful Thai Gardens just a short walk from the beach. Its the main Xtreme Gap up in Thailand, Xtreme Gappers to hang out with and share adventures.

During the Intro Week:

Koh Tao Accommodation & Gallery

The accommodation in the resort in Koh Tao is of a very high standard complimenting your stay in paradise perfectly. Frequently Asked Questions

The Xtreme Gap Year Koh Tao experience.
One of the benefits of booking your trip on Koh Tao with Xtreme Gap Year is not only do you get to do this awesome activity, but you will become part of the Xtreme gap family on Koh Tao. We will pick you up from the pier and give you a warm welcome at our stunning resort. On your first night our resident representative will take you out for a gorgeous Thai meal annual get to know all of the other members of the group. When you are booking a trip with us it is not just about the activity so please bear this in mind if you are comparing prices to other companies. No other company has such a big presence in Koh Tao, runs groups of like-minded travellers so booking a trip with us is as much about the friends you make as well as the experiences you will have.
I am travelling alone. Is this a problem?.
No, most of our travellers are solo travellers. You will meet lots of people on the different weeks. With group start dates and lots of group activities you will make new friends really easy.
How do I transfer back to the airport at the end of the programme?
The trip ends in Koh Tao on Saturday, please note return transfer is not included in the price of the trip. This is because many people choose to travel onwards to other locations or stay in Koh Tao to do further programmes.

Returning back to Bangkok to meet your flight is very easy, transfers can be arranged on Koh Tao through rep and the cost is approximately £15. If you’re flying out straight after the trip ends, you have two options to meet your flight in Bangkok.
Our recommended option is to fly from Koh Samui directly to Bangkok airport, rep can organise your bus tickets to Samui airport, this will involve catching the boat late Saturday morning and arriving in Koh Samui at around three o’clock. Transfers are provided from the pier direct to the airport and are complimentary.
Please ensure that your flights are not booked any earlier than this and do allow for delays, so we would recommend not booking a flight back to Bangkok until the afternoon which also allows time to check in at the airport as well. Check Bangkok Airways the cheap flights booked ahead this should not cost you any more than £30 the flight time is approximately 40 min.
Option two would be to get the morning boat from Koh Tao back to Bangkok via bus and boat, the transfer time between six and eight hours typically you will get back into Bangkok about 10 o’clock in the evening. This would require an extra night stay in Bangkok, and if you are to pursue this option we do not recommend you do not organise your international flight until Sunday. Again the cost for this transfer is about £15.

Do I need a visa?
If you are planning on travelling to Thailand for 28 days or less and you have British, Dutch or USA passport you can get a Visa exemption on arrival. This is valid for 28 days and cannot be extended in Thailand. If you are planning on being in Thailand longer than 28 days you will need to pre-arrange a Visa. You can prearrange a visa for 60 days which you can extend to 90 days in Thailand.
There are two ways of arranging your visa. When you are from the UK. You can either go in person to the Thai embassy in London, or you can post your passport along with the necessary documentation and fee to one of the Thai Consulates. In general this works the same for the other countries like The Netherlands and United States too, but please contact the nearest Thai Consulate for visa enquiries.
What is Sing Buri like?
Sing Buri is a province in the centre of Thailand. It has got a ver nice and chilled atmosphere. You stay in eco houses in the shade of banana palms trees by the Noi Nam river. Sing Buri is rich of cultural history. The province houses many temples, museums, and historical sites. You can easily say it is the epic centre for Thai history and a great place to get under the skin of the country.
Will I be met at the airport?
Yes, if you arrive during the weekend we will pick you up. When you arrive during a week day we can still pick up at any time, but there is a €50 extra payment. If you wish a few extra days in Bangkok before hand you will have to make your own way on the Sunday to the meeting point at the Royal Hotel. Meeting time is at 1pm.
What is the average age of the groups
This is a hard question as age range does vary. On the groups that join the intro and culture weeks the average age is between 18 and 22. On Koh Tao with the Koh Tao Adventure (which are the last 2 weeks of this programme) the average age tends to be in the twenties.
Group Demographics

Is this trip suitable for you? The average age on this trip is between 18 and 22. Although it is open to all. The make up of the groups is usually 75% female to 25% male, just going to show, girls really are braver than boys! So come on lads, what are you waiting for? Prove us wrong!
The final week finishes on the Saturday morning, so you can arrange your transfer back to Bangkok with Miss Jai via boat and Bus (12 hours) or book a flight from Koh Samui to Bangkok (2 hour boat and 45 minute flight). This is the prefered option for most of our travellers as this gets you straight into the international airport for a smooth flight connection back home.
Remember lots of details are in predeparture pack you recieive after booking. You will also be hooked up with your buddy lists then.

Finally

We can also send you loads of information on this trip and the locations so get trip notes for more details!
Full details on your options to get back to Bangkok are included in a very detailed predeparture pack, which we send you after booking.
You will also be set up with an online buddy list so you can chat to other members of the group in Koh Tao. The trip ends on the Saturday morning in Koh Tao. Check the FAQ section for details on how to get back to the airport.

Xtreme Gap began on Koh Tao, and we are one of the only gap year companies to actually have a base and staff located there. Vietnam Xplorer

Backpacking in Vietnam made easy. Hop on hop off backpacker bus pass.

Vietnam is a fantastic country to visit, but it is also notoriously challenging to go backpacking through. Things operate a little bit differently in Vietnam compared to its neighbouring Southeast Asian countries: Being one of the last remaining communist countries, plus having had a harrowing history of protracted wars with the US and France, the people in Vietnam can be a little bit more pushy towards travellers.

Don’t let that put you off visiting though, Vietnam can be a very rewarding place to experience. Is a truly beautiful country, with mountains, thousands of miles of pristine coastline, exciting energetic cities filled with millions of people going about their daily lives: it’s a lot to take in and will leave a lasting awesome impression.

This trip is the perfect way to experience this country, without the stress and hassle that can be associated with a backpacking trip in Vietnam.

With all of your transport included and the backup and support of Xtreme´s local guides you can spend as long as you like exploring this country with a hop on hop off pass. It’s a great way to meet other travellers, and hook up with other independent backpackers.

Vietnam Xplorer Itinerary

  • Starts: Ho Chi Minh City any Sunday
  • Ends: Hanoi
  • Minimum travel time: 12 days (we recommend you will want to spend about three weeks)

Starts: Ho Chi Minh City

This trip starts in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday a month. If you are flying in we can add on the Ho Chi Minh ConneXion arrival pack: includes meet and greet arrival transfer, two nights’ accommodation, daily breakfast at your hotel and Water Puppet Theatre show. This also includes a guided tour of the famous Cu Chi Tunnels. Extensive network of Vietcong tunnels, where you can actually enter the tunnels, Discover more about the Vietnam war, and even fire AK-47s M-16′s and let rip Rambo style on an M-60 machine gun!

We would strongly recommend this as you will want to explore Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnams biggest and most interesting city it’s a great place to visit. So allow enough time prior to your arrival to take it all in.

Ho Chi Minh City is home to the War Remnant Museum which displays harrowing reminders of the American and Vietnamese war, the Saigon Opera House which is surrounded by shopping plazas, and even its own Notre Dame Cathedral – said to be a connection between the physical and spiritual life of Ho Chi Minh people.

Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat

Leaving behind the chaos and heat of Ho Chi Minh City, we head for the refreshingly cool climate of Dalat. Known as the honeymoon capital of Vietnam, this could be a good opportunity to pop the question! The journey today is through fertile farmlands that specialise in rubber, coffee & tea; all crops imported by the French. The cool climate here is perfect for growing Vietnam’s only locally produced wine, as well as vegetables and flowers, which are transported daily to Ho Chi Minh City and beyond. We can check out the large market near the guesthouse, or one of many friendly cafes selling excellent coffee on every corner.
Local guesthouse USD10-12

Non-Travel day: Dalat

Dalat vaguely resembles a French town with sprawling old villas and towering pine trees. It is not on the main tourist trail so locals are curious and very friendly to western visitors. There are plenty of adventurous activities here, including a mountain bike ride to Datania Waterfall, or the last Emperor’s art deco-style summer palace, and the never-ending local coffee plantations.
Local guesthouse USD10-12

Dalat to Buon Ma Thout

Driving through stunning mountain scenery we reach the provincial town of Buon Ma Thuot. We stock up on supplies before making our way out to the nearby rural area, and our homestay in an M’Nong ethnic village. Staying right on the shores of the beautiful Lak Lake, we can see local fishermen and farmers working, and even get the chance to take a boat ride across to the other side and return by elephant!
Ethnic Homestay in Jun Longhouses USD15

Buon Ma Thout to Qui Nhon

This morning we head for the coast and the seaside town of Quy Nhon – a popular holiday destination for Vietnamese, but off the beaten track for western tourists! Local hospitality is what makes this town well worth the visit. Jump straight into the warm ocean waters, to wash off the mountain dust from the day.
Local guesthouse USD10-12

Qui Nhon to Hoi An

A coastal drive takes us to this popular tourist spot, and UNESCO World Heritage town, with its beautifully restored and preserved French Colonial architecture. Hoi An is teeming with tailor shops, funky bars, outstanding restaurants, art galleries and souvenir shops. With glorious beaches nearby, this is close to paradise! A great spot to hop off enjoy the local nightlife; try great local delicacies (and beers), then meander home safely through the motorbike free streets.
Local guesthouse or hotel USD15-30

Non-Travel Day: Hoi An

Today is free for you to explore this charming town, get some tailoring done, join a motorbike tour through the countryside, try scuba diving, cycle to the beach, do a cooking class or just enjoy the tasty local coffee at one of the many restaurants in town.
Local guesthouse or hotel USD15-30

Hoi An to Hue

Located on the Perfume River, Hue is regarded as the cultural and spiritual centre of Vietnam and is the former home to the Vietnamese Emperors. We see many elaborately decorated temples and beautiful pagodas throughout the area, the centerpiece of which is the Citadel and Forbidden Purple City.
We highly recommend a countryside motorbike tour through quaint, rural villages and rice paddies to experience something of the ‘real’ Vietnam.
Local guesthouse USD10-12

Hue to Dong Hoi

A short drive up the coast this morning takes us through the old DMZ (De Militarized Zone), the border between North and South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and to the provincial town of Dong Hoi. Dong Hoi is home to the Blind Massage Therapy Centre, and the quiet Nhat Le beach. Here you have the choice to cruise the river front by bicycle, get to know the local fishermen or just chill out at one of the evening street bars, with great views of the large bridge that is lit up with disco lights!
Basic hotel near the river USD12-15+

Non-Travel Day: Dong Hoi

Today we recommend visiting the spectacular rural area of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, 45km from Dong Hoi. This area has pristine rivers (perfect for a refreshing dip or kayak) and also boasts a number of impressive caves, including the recently discovered Thien Duong Cave that is the largest cave in the world!
Basic hotel near the river USD12-15+

Dong Hoi to Cam Lo to Ninh Binh

Our journey toward the national park takes us through beautiful countryside with its stunning limestone kyrst mountains, stopping along the way at the ‘real’ Vietnam beachside town of Cam Lo. This chilled out spot is definitely not on the tourist trail…..yet! We try out the local seafood and have a swim before continuing our express journey on to Ninh Binh.
Locally run hotel with excellent restaurants nearby USD10-12

Ninh Binh to Mai Chau

This morning we head to the Cuc Phoung National Park and Primate Centre, which is home to the many endangered and rescued primates including monkeys, gibbons and other interesting species native to the area. From here, we stop for a swim at the local hot pools, and then continue on to Mai Chau, an isolated, minority hill-tribe haven set amongst towering cliffs. There is plenty of time this afternoon to go exploring in this rural valley of lush greenery and terraced fields of rice paddies.
Local guesthouse USD10-12

Mai Chau to Hanoi

We get the legs moving with an early bike ride through the nearby countryside and villages, before jumping on the bus, bound for the chaotic streets of Vietnam’s capital. Hanoi is an exotic Asian city full of excitement and energy, and thousands of motorcycles making the simple task of crossing the road seem like a real achievement!
This is where your Xtreme adventure ends, but there is plenty to do and see in and around Hanoi if you have some extra days to spend here.
Local guesthouse or hotel USD15-30 or backpacker style dorm USD7-9

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

What do the guides do?
On each bus we have two guides, one local one Western. They are there to look after you, take you to some of the more interesting places that usually get left off a typical backpackers itinerary, and they can also help book you accommodation throughout the journey.
Am I with the same people throughout the trip?
As the Vietnam Xplorer is a hop on hop off pass you may not be with the same people throughout the trip. This is because you can spend longer in certain locations if you want to hang out there awhile. In reality friendships form pretty quickly, so most people tend to hook up with the same people and share the same travel itinerary.
Is accommodation included?
Accommodation is not included in this program, we have given you an indication as to how much you should budget at each stop in US dollars. Our driver guides are able to book you into accommodation as you go, so you do not need to worry about booking your own accommodation, however you will need to pay for it locally. Accommodation in Vietnam is inexpensive.

When you do get round to it, where is the motivation? The great thing about the fitness Boot Camp is that you can take time out of your hectic schedule to do something that is really great for your well-being, and you know you will be supported every step of the way.

What can the Thailand Fitness Bootcamp do for you?

Everyone is different, with different goals. Some people are really unfit others have a good base level of fitness, either way you will benefit from spending some time training here and you will see remarkable improvements.

You will be impressed by what you can achieve.

It is a really motivating environment. 90% of people at the camp travel there on their own which leads to a really social and supportive atmosphere because everyone has their with the same goal. When this is coupled with superb trainers, scheduled classes and all the equipment you could need, there really is nothing stopping you.

You will be amazed by what you can achieve, because with group training sessions slacking off is less of an option, and the training is quite addictive once you get into it. The included meal plan, two meals a day, (designed by an American celebrity chef) provides you with really healthy and delicious food helping you to tone up, lose weight or build muscle extremely quickly.

We have had clients who have gone from 1 week to 12 weeks, and the feedback is consistently excellent. With a varied and flexible training timetable, morning and evening you will not be bored.

At the Xtreme Gap fitness boot camp relaxation is just as important as the training.

The training can take it out of you, so to relax after a hard session you stay in a super luxurious resort, just 2 min from the training area. Set in a peaceful Thai tropical garden, with two beautiful pools, and your own boutique villa style room all ensuite (or a suite if you choose Deluxe or Luxury), you have the perfect blend of healthy fitness workouts and complete relaxation at the end of the day. See the accommodation tab for more.

All you need is on your door step.

The location is superb, in Phuket, towards the south centre of the island the camp is located away from the touristic mess of Phuket Town, located on a quiet road bordering the jungle, there are lots of nice little restaurants, spas and restaurants to enjoy.

The Training.

It is the training that really sets up camp apart, not just the quantity but also the quality of the workouts really get results. With an impressive roster of trainers, we are constantly improving our fitness routines incorporating the latest methods and techniques. We also invest in the latest equipment like TRX and cross fit equipment to really deliver results. A fully equipped gym worth over $20,000 and 8 separate training areas are attached to the camp.

On average there can be 100 people training at the camp, from all over the world and it is not unusual to be working out with celebrities, professional athletes and fitness professionals who are on holiday and want to get in shape, as well as people of poor fitness levels who really want to learn how to improve their physique. With so many people coming and training the camp, naturally the latest fitness techniques are incorporated and developed in the training programmes. With just one month spent training at the Xtreme Gap fitness Boot Camp, we can confidently state that you can develop so much further than six months with a personal trainer back home. Fitness results are really delivered.

To see what we mean request trip notes.

Personal Training Session and Group Sessions.

Once per week you will have a mentor session with a professional personal trainer, who has competed at international level in bodybuilding competitions, and is well placed to advise nutrition, techniques and give you a road map during your stay to really get the most out of your workouts.

As well as the personal training session, there are group training sessions, Monday to Friday, with Gym access available on Saturday too (Sunday is taken off for a well-deserved rest).

Whilst there is plenty of training activities included, perhaps even more than most can handle, there is the option to book extra personal training sessions locally, and you can even try other fitness activities like Muay Thai training (for a small local payment).

Full introduction and orientation on arrival.

So what’s the catch? Well nothing really, except you have to arrange your own flight to Thailand, you fly to Phuket which is very well connected internationally or via Bangkok and you need to make the effort in training of course! Just book early online and we will get you all prepared for your trip.

Fitness Bootcamp beach training excursions.

The group training sessions are very diverse, we like to mix it up to keep it interesting and there are a couple of training sessions that take place every week away from the camp.

On Tuesdays, we do the Big Buddha Run, so the class is longer on that day. 8-10:30 AM. The Big Buddha sits at the summit of a mountain, the highest in Phuket. It’s not a steep ascent, but it’s all uphill and a serious test of your fitness abilities. It is an optional running class, you do not have to attend but those who do reach the summit of the mountain can check out the big Buddha.

This is not your average run, you will be jogging up through the jungle passing elephants on the way, if you are seriously out of shape then you might be tempted to ride one up instead, but do not worry, most people make it.

Thursdays we go to the Beach for Beach Boot Camp. Cross fit style workouts with the Andaman sea as the backdrop. The Beach Boot Camp days are legendary, and they are probably the toughest training sessions throughout the week. The reward is you get to jump in the crystal clear sea after a one-hour session!

Our client feedback consistently mentions how surprised they have been at their progress and improvement on these two fitness excursions days. You will definitely be surprised by what you are capable of.

Everything is made easy for you.

After booking, we will set you up with an online buddy list so you can chat to other people going to the camp, or people already training at the camp before you even set off.

We are of course here to answer all your questions before you go and before booking, but after booking we also include a very detailed predeparture pack for you to familiarise yourself with the trip before you go, and we will help you every step of the way making your travel arrangements as simple as possible.

On Arrival.

On arrival in Phuket, we will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to your luxury boutique villa. We recommend a Sunday arrival although we can be flexible (request trip notes for further details on the accommodation).

On the first day of your training, our Xtreme Gap rep will give you a full introduction, introduce you to the trainers, show you around the camp and help you meet other Xtreme Gappers, and also talk you through the meal plan and training timetable (more on that below).

One of the best things about the camp is the atmosphere, most travel there solo so there is a very welcoming and social side to the camp. (More on that later).

The rep is your first point of contact should you have any issues in Thailand, perhaps you just want to know where to go to get your laundry done, where to have a good spa treatment or get the inside information on which restaurant has the best Thai red curry in town, all you have to do is ask. Everything is made really easy for you, allowing you to just focus on having a great time, getting fit and having a really great holiday.

How long should you go for?

Most people go for 2 to 4 weeks, due to time constraints with work, and two weeks is enough to start to see some good results. The main benefit you will take home the knowledge of how to maintain and improve your fitness back home along with a solid foundation or fitness.

Of course you also have had an amazing holiday in Thailand as well and it is not that often you can say you’ve come back from holiday feeling better than when you left!

Short-term guests will receive an amazing kick start to their health and fitness routine.

Many who travel with us use this as a kick start to their travels as well, after all if you are hitting the beaches in Thailand, you want to look and feel good!

Really want to get impressive results? Go long-term.

If you are really serious about making this a life changing trip, and completely give yourself a physical overhaul, to improve your health and fitness the way you look at the way you feel that you should definitely consider joining the long term.

Our clients who stay 8 to 12 weeks really feel the benefit and the transformation can be incredible. An improvement in your fitness levels is guaranteed, and spending 12 weeks devoting yourself to improving your health is surprisingly cheaper than spending the same amount of time at home. For example 8 weeks is under £3000, pretty much fully inclusive (except for one meal per day which costs about two pounds in Thailand).

Great Value Compared to Other Thailand Fitness Boot Camps.

The fitness Boot Camp is incredibly good value and when you compare the prices to similar boot camps and considering the quantity and quality of the training combined with a luxurious stay in a boutique resort, it becomes unsurprising that the majority of people who book revisit the camp. At half the price of other fitness boot camps. It is little wonder it is so popular.

The Training Timetable.

Early Morning

If you wish you can start with a good stretch in the morning by joining the Yoga class for an hour before the ‘real’ work begins. Please note all training is voluntary, and no one is going to drag you out of bed to attend. Having said that everyone is really motivated and it’s a great start to the day.

Boot Camp Training 3 x Per Day.

After Yoga comes the serious cardio (fat burning) classes, using highly advanced techniques (request trip notes for further details and videos about this). These sessions, called Body fit boot camp sessions, are designed to increase your fitness fast and effectively. The groups typically have s mix of people training in poor condition and peak physical condition, this works well as the exercises are modified depending on your fitness levels and ability so no one is left behind.

The first session starts at eight for one hour, and there is a second and third session in the afternoon at two o’clock and three o’clock.

Through out the weeks your fitness levels can be measured on a fitness test so you know how your are progressing.

Personal Training Schedule

You also have a 1 hour a week personal training session, one on one with one of the most respected fitness trainers in Asia!

This session is designed to monitor your progress, and to guide your fitness regime so that you arrive at your desired goals. During these weekly sessions you will develop the ideal schedule, diet and supplement plan.

Your trainer is a professional body builder: gold medal winner in Mr Asia bodybuilding competitions. He is a diet and nutrition counsellor as well so if you want the low down on what you should eat and how you should exercise this is the perfect opportunity.

Peter´s instruction is all about teaching you proper form to maximize your work out goals, and give you that little extra push you need. He will teach about nutrition, weight-lifting and workout structure and provide you with an invaluable boost in the know how of correct work outs. More often than not, our clients can double their effectiveness with minor modifications to their work outs.

The weekly personal training session is designed to keep you on track and teach you how to get the most out of your sessions. One hour per week is more than enough considering all the groups fitness sessions included in the programme, however should you want more personal sessions to utilise peter as a spot partner you can book them locally or purchase a pack of 4 extra sessions per week for €150 /£150 at the time of booking.

Yoga, Muay Thai try it all.

There are also options to join Yoga sessions taught by a highly qualified yoga instructors. The Yoga groups first thing in the morning are perfect to warm up your muscles and get them ready for a hard session at body fit.

As you are training in Thailand you can also join Muay Thai training sessions (for beginners). Muay Thai is the national martial art and is superb for fitness and good fun as well. Many Western style “body combat” classes take a lot from Muay Thai training sessions. Even if you have no experience you can join the morning Muay Thai groups, with 80% of people signing up with little or no experience you will be in good company.

Flights

Flights are not included, and please do not book your flights before booking with us as we do need to reserve your spot, and make sure there is availability. Submit your booking form and we will come back to you within 24 hours to confirm. Once we have issued you your confirmation invoice you are then good to book your flights into Phuket.

Travelling alone is no problem it’s a very social environment.

As we mentioned most people who attend the camp, are independent travellers and arrive at the camp on their own. If you are concerned about travelling solo, don’t be. There is such a social atmosphere at the camp, and it is a really supportive environment that everyone gets to know each other very quickly.

We set you up on our buddy list system before you go (to chat online with other people attending the camp, and we promise you will make really good new friends, (serious physical exercise in a group can be quite a bonding experience we assure you!)

So really it does not take long for people to get to know one another.

While 2 meals a day are included in the meal plan, you are free to have dinner where every you like, which tends to be very social.

People come from all over to train at our camp, so expect to meet new friends from all over the world and really broaden your horizons and extend your connections at the same time.

The fact that most people travel there alone, also adds to the motivation factor, because everyone is there to succeed in their fitness goals so everyone encourages and pushes each other to do more.

Location & Activities.

You can expect great weather, amazing food and exciting environment. Lots of culture and interesting day trips to be had. The training camp is about a 10 min drive from the beach, (taxis are cheap) there are temples, spas, and numerous activities like elephant trekking, diving and snorkelling, trekking and you can even head out to Phi Phi for some to die for beaches.

You can’t go to Thailand without trying a Thai massage as well, and after a few days training you might just want one! There are ample spa facilities in the vicinity of your accommodation so it is very easy to reward yourself with a bit of pampering after all of your hard efforts with your training.

Request trip notes (on the right and we will send you further information on some other things you can do there.)

Visas.

You can enter Thailand on a 28 day Visa exemption if arriving by air, so for our clients staying just four weeks or under there is no need to arrange a Visa. If you are intending to stay longer, you will need to pre-arrange a Visa, after booking we can send you all the information you need to do this, and our partners can even take care of this for you.

Booking Process

The booking process is relatively straightforward, but please note spaces to fill up so we advise booking well ahead, last-minute bookings can be taken occasionally, but we do need it least 10 days notice. Having said that we can rarely guarantee you a space if you book last-minute, so please contact us if you want to make a last-minute booking.

To book all you have to do is submit your booking form, we will then check availability and send you your confirmation invoice, you can take this into the bank to pay (no charge), or pay online to a UK account, or you can pay online with PayPal (there is a 4% charge for this option).

If you are travelling within 12 weeks, you will need to pay the full amount. If you are travelling later than 12 weeks you only need to secure your place with £100 deposit, then pay the balance 12 weeks before departure giving you plenty of time to save flights and spending money.

So for only £100, you can make a commitment to yourself to get fit and healthy, tone up and feel incredible you just need to submit your booking form. Don’t think too long about it, as spaces to fill up so get it in early.

Set your own pace if you need to

The gym is open full time Monday to Saturday, you can train harder if you like, or explore Phuket and hit its stunning beaches with a body to match if you don´t slack off!

Why is our Thailand Fitness Boot Camp so effective?

As a general rule everyone is different, but it depends on as much as the effort you put in when training, the techniques you use when training (see a video discussing this here) and the fuel you are putting in your body when you are training. The Fitness boot camp teaches you all these things and sets you on the right path to peak physical fitness.

Technique

One of the benefits of the camp is that you will be taught the proper techniques and exercises by experts (you would be amazed by how many people who do attend a gym, do an incorrect work out that is not effective and waste a lot of their time an energy, when these inefficient work out routines can be easily corrected with a little education). This is great because you will be able to take this home with you to continue once you are back off the trip.

Effort

Secondly as there are lots of others training at the camp with the same fitness goals you will find that you end up pushing your efforts harder to reach your fitness goals. Why? Because everyone is there to support you, and it is a very encouraging atmosphere. The gym is always on your door step, and you are there to train, so there really is no excuse, especially when you have paid to attend the camp. There is no slacking off!

Fuel

Third, the meal plan is designed to help with weight loss and muscle mass gain. Lots of healthy, protein rich and delicious food, of the Thai and Western variety. So how long is the ideal time to go for? Hard to say, we would suggest people start seeing results in as little as the first week, but real visable results come after about 2-3 weeks of continuous training. Some people go for months and really make a dramatic transformation.

What fitness equipment do we use?

The gym at the fitness training camp includes all you need to work on strength and conditioning training: hammerstrength benches, curl bench and bar, incline, squat rack, sit-up benches, 3 racks of dumbbells, stationary bikes, Nautilus machine with pull down, seated row, leg press, and 4 full sets of kettle bells which are highly regarded for hardcore weightlifting workouts and plenty of plate weights to accommodate several weight-lifters at same time. The equipment was brand new in 2010, costing over $20,000, you will be hard pushed to find a better place to train.

What about the meal plan?

Included in the fitness boot camp is a food programme. The training camp has a nice area to enjoy your meals and socialise with other guests. There is a choice between lots of different Thai main dishes and Western dishes too. These come with white and brown rice. There are fresh steamed or sautéed vegetables and then there is soup, fresh fruit and a bottle of water. Now that is what we call healthy!

We want to provide you with healthy food options for optimal training and fitness. The food at the restaurant contains high protein and fiber. You can choose from basic menu options, including some of the most popular Thai dishes. Also we now have a Health Menu with lots of salads and light steamed vegetables using less ingredients like Oil, Sugar and Salt.

Also all vegetables and salads are sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds an added little bonus for lowering cholesterol, reducing diverticulitis, and weight loss.

Please note the meal plan includes 2 meals a day, these can be taken in any order (breakfast, lunch or dinner). Why only 2? Well there are plenty of really lovely little restaurants in the neighbourhood, and they are inexpensive (think about £1,50 per meal), so you will want to get out of the camp and explore, perhaps have dinner with new people you meet at the camp.

How far is the training camp from the airport and the town centre?
At the training camp you are a 20 minutes taxi ride away from Phuket town and 40 minutes from the airport.

When is the best time to go?
Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate. It is warm all year round, but the two periods of April-May and September-October are the hottest. The September-October period is also the wettest. The best time to visit Phuket is during the cool monsoon season, from November through March. Then it isn’t so humid, and the cool breezes keep it comfortable. The average temperature is around 75F to 89F (24C to 32C).

Where are the beaches?

The beaches are about 6km from the camp. The best way to get there is by bike, scooter or taxi. There are always more people going in the weekends, so you can join each other. In the neighbourhood there are pools, and if you stay at our luxury resort you can chill by one of the two pools it offers!

I am a vegetarian. Can I come?

Vegetarian and Vegan’s also have options at the restaurant. Not all the fun has been taken out of the menu – you can still get French fries made with unpeeled potatoes! Also included at the Restaurant for extra costs is our protein and fruit shake bar offering a wide variety of Fruit and protein shakes and a selection of drinks to keep our guests maintaining a high amount of protein in their diet to help build muscle and lose fat.

Is it scary arriving on my own?

If you are thinking it might be a little intimidating arriving at a fitness boot camp, you will be pleasantly surprised. There is a great supportive atmosphere, where everyone has a similar goal, to benefit from improving their fitness and well being. Also you will have a serious introduction by our representative Chris who will help you settle in and introduce you to the trainers and team at the fitness camp. He will explain you about all different training sessions and the meal plan (also included!). There can be up to 100 people at the camp so do not worry about being arriving on your own!

Who stops me from drinking beer and eating chocolate?

The camp is quite remote and there are no tourist bars and big super markets in the neighbourhood. Also everyone you meet will be training and will be working on their health and fitness, so it is not hard not to go out, as everyone is focussed on getting fit! Also we include a meal plan. These 2 meals a day are very fresh and healthy and we also include water and fruit. The other meals you can order at our restaurant or you can eat out in one of the restaurants down the road, they all have a healthy menu!

Do I need a visa?
Why do people join?

The joint motivating factor for people who attend the Thailand fitness boot camp is the desire to improve fitness and health. As all fitness programmes are tailored to your needs, no matter what your fitness levels or experience, the camp will be able to set you on your way to your personal fitness goals and in most cases exceed them.

You will be getting instruction from some of the worlds best trainers and you will build up a huge personal knowledge of how to get the most out of your work outs when you leave.

This is a flexible itinerary, meaning that it can change based on the weather or other events, but the schedule below covers all the things that you will be doing and places you’ll see, it just might not necessarily be in that order.

Day 1 Welcome to Hanoi

Details

This is it! The beginning of your four week adventure that is full of excitement, culture, history and great times with new friends. When you settle into your accommodation in Hanoi you’ll get a chance to meet up with your fellow backpackers and find out about everyone you’ll be spending the next few weeks with. Most people on our North Vietnam Experience are in the same boat, i.e. they are travelling solo, so there is no need to be nervous. Anyway, you’ll be far too busy to worry about that!

Day 2 Hanoi old quarter

Details

To new visitors, Hanoi is a mad city bustling with crazy drivers, overloaded bicycles, colourful markets and street food stalls selling local dishes, some of which aren’t always identifiable (and yes, they are partial to chomping on a bit of Fido!). Luckily you have a guide to help you through that initial culture shock, allowing you to absorb it with a bit of help. You’ll visit the 12th century Temple of Literature, see a local music performance and have lunch in the Old Quarter, when your guide will take the opportunity to tell you all about what the next four weeks has in store. In the evening you’ll have dinner and see a performance at the world famous water puppet theater.

By the end of today the sensory overload will either have you sleeping like a log or wide awake with wonder!

Day 3 Ho Chi Minh &Ninh Binh

Details

Today you’ll leave Hanoi and travel onto the large country town of Ninh Binh. On the way there is a stop off to visit the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, known as Uncle Ho to the Vietnamese, the socialist leader who led resistance against French and American occupation. His residence was a little house in a park and you’ll see that he didn’t live a very extravagant lifestyle and just lived with the basics – something which other communist leaders should take note of!

After lunch it’s onto Ninh Binh where you’ll be based for a couple of days to experience some real Vietnamese culture.

Day 4 and 5 Markets and culture Vietnamese style

Details

The town of Ninh Binh can be a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi, with its much more laid back atmosphere and friendly locals (once you get past the guest house touts at the train station!). Over the next couple of days you and your new mates get to immerse yourselves in the local culture with language lessons and the chance to use your new phrases in the market, where you’ll be picking up the ingredients for your cookery lessons. Don’t worry though as you’ll have a bit of help to ensure that you don’t end up with ‘pets’!

You’ll also have plenty of time to socialize with your buddies and enjoy the unusual nightlife, which is mostly located in private homes that have garden furniture on the pavement or in the garage. This is also where the locals go so you’ll get a chance to practice those newly learned phrases!

Day 6 Quintessential Vietnam paddy fields caves and temples

Details

Today involves a relaxing boat trip around Tam Coc and Dinh Cac Pier, which has a stunning landscape of towering karst islets and vast expanses of paddy fields. You’ll also float through three impressive natural caves, which is what the name Tam Coc means, ‘three caves’. This whole area epitomizes rural Vietnam and you’ll want to make sure your camera is charged.

After lunch you can cycle to the village and onto Thai Vi Temple and Bich Dong Pagoda, which dates back to 1428 and is located on Ngu Nhac Mountain.

Day 7 and 8 Get out and about

Details

You now have two free days to enjoy whatever you like doing most. Don’t waste it on sleeping though, there is far too much to see in the area! Get together with your pals and arrange some trips to see what you can find, explore some more of the beautiful and eerie landscape of Tam Coc and go cycling around the local countryside to see what wildlife you can spot.

Day 9 Temples culture and countryside

Details

You’ll really be feeling the zen-like atmosphere of the natural surroundings today with a little introduction to Buddhism and meditation in Kenh Ga. This unique village gives you a great insight into river life and the local culture and you’ll find its mixture of majestic limestone formations, little stone fishing cottages and friendly locals quite enchanting. We also visit Non Nuoc Pagoda and Tran Temple before stopping for some lunch.

In the afternoon you get to enjoy the hot pools on Kenh Ga Island before having a tasty dinner and settling down for the night. It’s a great chance to chill out and prepare for the next day’s adventures.

Day 10 Boat cruise up the Kenh Ga River

Details

Today is a real treat for nature lovers, with a boat trip on the Kenh Ga river and a visit to the largest nature reserve in Vietnam. If you don’t start the day as a wildlife fan, you certainly end it as one! Cuc Phuong National Park consists of karst mountains that have numerous caves to explore and lush green valleys that contain amazing flora and fauna – hundreds of species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, not to mention primates including macaques and gibbons. The plants are just as impressive with beautiful orchids, towering trees and lush ferns. You also have the added bonus of staying overnight in the park for a real ‘at-one-with-nature’ feeling.

Day 11 Jungle rainforests and ancient trees

Details

When you wake up on day 11 you may well have that feeling of ‘Where am I?!’ Well, you’ll soon remember when you gaze over the serene landscape and then don your walking boots to visit the park’s oldest residents – two magnificent trees, Sau (700 years old) and Tro (an unbelievable 1000 years old). On the way you’ll pass a prehistoric cave, walk through jungle and rainforest, all the time listening to the sounds of the animals and insects. Very atmospheric!

Day 12 The old capital of Vietnam

Details

Today we head back to Ninh Binh where you have time to rest and relax before continuing the adventure onto the old capital of Vietnam.

Day 13 Dinh Tien Hoang and Le Dai Hanh

Details

In the morning the bus takes you to the 10th century capital of Vietnam, Hoa Lu. Although little remains of the ancient citadel there are two amazing temples, Dinh Tien Hoang and Le Dai Hanh, to explore. In addition, the surrounding landscape provides the perfect backdrop for some amazing photos, with limestone mountains, a picturesque river and waterfall. The next stop after lunch is the intriguing Catholic church of Phat Dien, which is actually the largest church in the country. Built between 1875 and 1899 this picturesque complex consists of a network of lakes, ponds and caves.

Day 14 and 15 free time and Lao Cai province and Sapa town

Details

You have a couple of days ‘off’ at this point in the trip – that is you are free to explore at your own pace and see what you and your adventuring friends can find. Meet up in the evenings and swap stories and photos with the whole group, whilst soaking up the atmosphere and thinking about everything you’ve seen and done so far.

The next part of the trip involves taking a train to the Lao Cai province and Sapa town, where a few days of adventure trekking starts, which is by far the best way to see the beautiful Vietnamese countryside.

Days 16 to 22  choose between adventure or cultural exchange.

At this point you can either choose to go adventure trekking or embark upon cultural exchange programs involving visiting schools and helping out with the kids.

Cultural exchange option:

Days 16 to 20 are spent  at a kindergarten or at a school for underprivileged kids, where you can get involved with helping out and entertaining the little ones. It’s a great opportunity to mix with the locals and a lot of fun too. Great if you want a deep and meaningful cultural experience and perhaps not too much adventure either.

Adventure option:

Day 16 Sapa

Details

A local village, hill tribes and beautiful scenery are on the agenda today. Cat Cat Village is about 1km from Sapa, located at the bottom of the Muong Hoa Valley and as you walk there you’ll see the breathtaking mountains, over 3000m high, and the green rice terraces that drop almost 1000m below. You’ll also pass the sparkling Cat Cat waterfall. The village itself is home to the H’Mong tribe, who retain many of the old customs and traditions, some of which you can see, such as hand weaving and dying of materials to make textiles. Have you still got room for souvenirs?!

Day 17 Locals and villages

Details

We hope you’re feeling well rested for today as there is a 10km trek through the hills, past the streams and into the valley of Muong Hoa to visit Ta Van village, where you’ll stay overnight with a local family. This gives you the chance to experience firsthand the lifestyle and culture of the people living in this area. After the long trek, the pool is bound to look appealing to soothe those aching muscles, but you also have the chance to pitch in and help to cook dinner (you might even get to use some of the skills you learnt in your cookery class) before settling down for a peaceful night with your local hosts.

Day 18 Waterfalls and landscapes and trekking

Details

You’ll have been glad for a peaceful night as today is an amazing seven hour round trip trekking to a waterfall and passing through some stunning landscapes along the way – something that you’ll probably be getting used to now, given how beautiful the country is. Anyway, you’re young and fit so no slacking, you can handle it!

Day 19 Sapa town

Details

Today it’s back to Sapa for a well earned rest. You’re more than half way through your adventure so you can sit back, chill out and reflect on all the places you’ve been, things you seen and people you’ve met so far. We reckon by this point you’ll definitely realize this is one of the best things you’ve ever done!

Day 20 Ham Rong Mountain and back to Hanoi

Details

Today is a visit to the beautiful orchid gardens on the Ham Rong Mountain. Located in Sapa town you don’t have far to travel to admire the panoramic views, gardens and unusual rock formations. It is well worth the effort of walking to the top as once you get there, and along the way, you’ll be rewarded with some great photo opportunities.

You have more free time in the afternoon/early evening before boarding the overnight train back to Hanoi.

Day 21 and 22 Hanoi craziness free time

Details

You’ve had quite a number of days admiring the beautiful Vietnam countryside and now it’s back to crazy Hanoi. You have a couple of days to explore more of the city, after which time you can decide whether you love it or hate it – it’s a bit like Marmite! Your guide will be able to give you the low down on the best places to visit and where to eat and drink.

Day 23 Bring on the beach!

Details

So far this trip has combined city life, rural villages and lush countryside, so to make it absolutely perfect the last week is beach week, so make sure you’ve got your swimming gear and suntan lotion before setting off for Halong Bay.

Days 24 – 28 Halong Bay

Details

Halong Bay, which means ‘Bay of the Descending Dragon’, is approximately 170km north of Hanoi and is famous for its surreal and somewhat eerie landscape of over 3000 limestone monoliths that rise imposingly from the ocean. As you float through these islets there is an otherworldly feeling about the place and you’ll understand why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and so popular with visitors to Vietnam. Whilst on board a boat trip you can enjoy lunch and soak up the sun on the top deck.

Throughout the week there are trips to Monkey Island, where you can play about on the beach and watch the antics of the cheeky local inhabitants, and Cat Ba, the largest island in Halong Bay, which has a gorgeous mixture of jungle, rocky cliffs, waterfalls, sandy coves and coral reefs. In addition to this you’ll have plenty of free time to do some lazing around in the sunshine by day and partying by night.

Just make sure that you get those all important emails addresses from your trip mates so that you can swap photos and keep each other up-to-date with any more adventures you do. Believe us, this trip will leave you wanting more. There is no vaccination for the travel bug!!

What makes our Underwater Film maker course so special?

The Xtreme Gap underwater videography course in Koh Tao is 12 weeks, 6 weeks longer than most underwater videography courses on the Island. The last 8 weeks you will have have the opportunity to enrol a paid internship. During this paid internship we give you the opportunity to really improve your underwater videography skills which will give you better job opportunities and will also further your island life in paradise on your Thailand gap year.

Note: If no paid rolls are available, or you are not have the right level yet, you can make your own practice videos´s and improve your skills.

You will be accommodated in our diving resort and we will ensure your diving skills are at the correct standards prior to starting the course. In order to join the paid internship you need a minimum of Rescue diver level. So if you have never dived before or you are not a rescue diver yet, we can help you to arrange the extra dive courses.

Our Partner has been based on Koh Tao for 12 years, and are the longest running video company on Koh Tao – with good established contracts with Scuba schools (so you will have plenty of work).

The course is run in conjunction with SSI (Scuba Schools International) producing this unique and ground breaking under water videography course. Our partners are the only SSI Educational centre in the world capable of, and authorized to teach this course.

Strongly believing that a good camera person must be capable of capturing appealing, strong, technically correct images and not relying on correcting them on a computer later the Xtreme Gap Year underwater videography course reflects commitment to excellence.

Underwater Videography Internship in Koh Tao

After you have completed the course, the underwater videography internship begins. The Underwater Videography internship lasts for 12 weeks and you have the possibility to earn some cash after the first month. For the duration of the Underwater Videography internship you get to work alongside our full-time videographers and go out (when the work is available) to make daily video’s of students and customers diving here on Koh Tao. You will film, edit and show your movies to the customers. If you have shot the video, and a sale is made, you burn and deliver the DVD’s to the dive shop or customer and earn your money.

This is the typical role of the underwater videographer and also what a full time staff member does in a normal days work.

Assistance 100% of the way

You will be assisted as needed every step of the way until you feel capable of a full days work with without help. The underwater videography internship is where you will train and improve your skills and gain invaluable hands on experience of underwater videographer. The training environment is a an energetic, highly productive, friendly and sometimes hectic working environment. You will be challenged to progress and push your limits.

The course is split in to 3 stages: Photography and filming skills, Video software training and then in water filming. The course is then followed us with an internship where you will be out diving and filming everyday, building up your portfolio and selling your videos for commission.

Stage 1 Photo Skills

The First Stage of the Videographer Course is on land. The underwater videography course consists of 2-3 days of on-land photography. This is where we can teach people the basics of photo and film. You will learn about composition, rule of thirds, what makes a great photo.

You will also be expected to undertake photography assignments, and will be sent off to take photos to have your work appraised later on in the day. Underwater Videographer students are also encouraged to continue taking photos and filming outside of the course for continual development and feedback.

Stage 2 Videography Training

Once you have completed your photography assignment, you will begin the videography training. One of our instructors will teach you the basic types of filming shots in class room. Afterwards, you will go down to the beach to put these shots into practice with the instructor assisting. The underwater videography course is a very hands on course and you will be continuously supported each step of the way. Once the on-land side of learning has been completed and perfected, you will hit the water.

Stage 3 Training Dives

The Under Water Videographer Part. The underwater side of things consists of 8 dives, learning the techniques and perfecting the basic of underwater videography. After learning about the video camera and underwater housing preparation, it’s time to head to the boat. We use Sony Handycams and Top Dawg housing for our daily films, as these are the most robust and reliable in the in the industry in our experience.

We also use several HD cameras and housings normally used for our bigger projects. The majority of the training dives are in the afternoon allowing plenty of time to meet prior to and prep the equipment. You can also go though any questions or concerns that you may have before getting on the boat.

Assessment dives

The first two dives are used to gouge your buoyancy skills. This is an essential skill to master. It is extremely important that that you are able to control buoyancy using only breathing and finning movements. Xtreme Gap and our partners consider having as little of an impact on the marine environment as possible a high priority, after all you will be filming and working in a very fragile ecosystem. You will be taught 3 basic techniques of filming, as well as learning how to operate a camera whilst diving.

Underwater Videographer Training Dives

The following 4 dives (2 dives per day) are spent teaching in-water filming techniques, making the most of available light, approaching and filming certain types of marine life and generally developing your skills necessary to be a good underwater cameraman/woman. The footage from each day’s diving is reviewed after the dive and feedback delivered, both good and bad. Your progress will be carefully monitored so you can proceed with the course accordingly, some of your skills may need more instruction or clarification.

Final Training Dives

Dives 7 and 8 are used to produce a full film, incorporating the days events. You will then edit during the editing session next day and you can keep your film as a souvenir of your first ever underwater production! The editing, is taught on both Final Cut Pro (Apple) and Premier (PC), so you can gain valuable knowledge of two different commonly used editing platforms.

Who joins the film maker course?
Beginners and professionals both join this course. The Xtreme Gap filmmaker course is aimed at industry professionals, both divers and film makers, with the goal of reaching broadcast level camera operator. Our main focus is on producing, and contributing, to documentaries. Editing is introduced at the end of the course and is required daily during the internship, but it is important to stress that we are in the business of creating top class underwater camera operators, not office staff. The vast majority of the internship is focused on diving and improving your skills shooting video underwater.
What is the success rate of the course?
We have many diving instructors and professional film makers taking our courses and we have a 100% success rate as we spend the time to make sure each and every student progresses to the very high levels which we expect.
How easy will it be to get assignments after the course?
On Koh Tao there are around 50 dive schools, so there are many opportunities. Assignments are not guaranteed, but very likeable. But it depends on your own hard work and how much you want it really. If you go for it 100% you will probably find a assignments.
When do I start earning and how much money do I get per video?
During the last few weeks of the course you make about 12GBP per sold video. You will be filming for example open water students in the morning, edit the movie in the afternoon and show the movies in the evening and hopefully, when they are good enough you sell them. The group you film can exit of 1 to 5 persons, so there is a big change you sell more than one video per group.
How much spending money do I need per month?
Around £20 per day should be enough for a great gap year. If you are not the drinking type and you like more quiet nights you could do it for £15. During the day you will only spend some money on food and water, and trust me, that is cheap!
What kind of weather is it on Koh Tao?
When is the best time to go?
Thailand is great for a gap year, because the weather is always nice. Maybe except October and November when it is rainy season. But for the rest of the year it is hot and sunny! And even in the rainy season you will have lots of sunshine and hot weather.

Yes, there we will be other Xtreme Gappers on the island. We do never know exactly how many, but there is always an average of 5 to 12 travellers from Xtreme Gap. Not all gap year travellers will be doing the Thailand Divemaster programme. There are also options to do Mixed Martial Arts, Yoga, Free diving and rock climbing on Koh Tao. For more gap year Thailand ideas please check our site. Everyone will stay in the same resort.
What are the rooms like at the resort on Koh Tao?

When you are not off exploring, you have a beautiful resort with a swimming pool to chill out in, and everything is within an easy walking distance of where you are staying. The beach for examples just 3 min.

As Koh Tao is one of the best places in the world to learn to dive, many people upgrade the diving week to a full open water course (a Discover SCUBA is included as standard but this is not a PADI license) Once you have a license you are able to book extra fun dives locally for about £12 per dive.

For those staying for four weeks or if you are lucky enough to coincide with the full moon party dates you can easily head over to the neighbouring island to hit the full moon party as well.

Koh Tao Adventure Day Itinerary

Off Roading through the jungle

Pick up from start location up to Mek’s mountain by 4×4. This is a really cool drive up impossibly steep jungle paths, ducking for cover as palm trees and bushes fly at you. As the truck climbs to the top of the mountain you will be rewarded with incredible views of the beautiful island.

Rock Climbing

Designed with beginners in mind this will be a mind blowing start to the day, climbing up huge granite walls you will be stunned by the incredible views of Koh Tao and the gulf at the top.

Never been Rock climbing? Don´t worry you are in good hands, most people have never done this, but with our capable team of qualified instructor/guides you will make it up granite cliffs and experience the buzz of this adventure sport for the first time!We truly believe pushing a comfort zone can give you some great travel moments and this is definitely one of those things.

Abseiling

This is one of the most highly rated activities! Rappelling down from the legendary ‘Fraggle Rock’ viewpoint . What goes up must come down… The Xtreme way. Fraggle rock is infamous in Koh Tao for providing great views of the jungle, sea and island.

Do not worry if you’ve never done any abseiling before, we have dedicated guides who are very experienced in throwing people off massive cliffs in Thailand!

Abseiling is a real buzz and the views are spectacular.

Buzzing around the island on a speed boat

Who do you think you are? James Bond? You will do. Our speed boat “appropriately named Hair of the dog” will blast you through the waters of Koh Tao to some awesome beaches for some snorkelling. You may or may not see a Whaleshark – but we did when we shot the promo video!

During the boat trip you can try out some Wake boarding or Kneeboarding (a small local payment) which is really fun.

We will then break for lunch before heading out on the afternoon activities, some times we might split the adventure day over 2 days depending on activities and numbers.

With all this adventure you are sure to build up an appetite, fear not, we have an awesome lunch waiting for you with awesome view of the beach from the goodtime cafe.

  • 15.00 – 15.45: Cliff Jumping (3m, 9m and 12m jumps) – He who dares…jumps.
  • 15.45 – 17.00: Guided snorkelling in two areas with basic free dive training, sea caves, Coral reefs and Blacktip Reef Sharks.
  • 17.00 – 17.30: Speed boat trip back around the island to back to Sairee Beach and finishes with a well deserved drink as the sun goes down

Accommodation

Thailand Adventure (9)

Full Details

The trip is broken down into 4 different themed weeks so you arr always experiencing something new and exciting!

  • Intro & Culture Week
  • Adventure Option Week
  • Cultural Immersion Week
  • Beach Week

Week One – Intro Week & Siam Culture

The first week is designed to introduce you to Thailand and it’s people, culture, language, attitudes and customs. It’s a great way to meet fellow travellers and to make new friends. To ensure you have fun and to make it easy for you to meet all the groups, we have arranged some fun social nights including a welcome party, a Thai-style BBQ and a dinner at a gorgeous bar / restaurant with Karaoke for those that like to sing!

Orientation

When you arrive at the eco house in Singburi you will be shown to your rooms. All rooms are shared with the same sex. Whilst staying at the eco-house, males and females are not allowed to stay in the same rooms. There will be time to relax, take a shower and unpack. There will be an informal meeting after dinner to basically welcome you and to inform you of things like what time breakfast is served. The orientation meeting will be the following day.

There are two co-ordinators at each house. The co-ordinators are friendly local Thais. They are there to show you around, introduce you to Thailand, answer any of your questions and ensure you have a good time. They really make this programme a special and unique one.

Programme introduction: aims, way of working, money, rules and appreciated behaviour, food, safety advice, cultural differences and social information.

Thai language:

During this week you and your group will have a Thai lesson. You will learn enough phrases to get by on.

Projects:

An explanation of the work places, projects taking place and information on what has been achieved in the past (volunteers that have chosen extra weeks only)

Visit local places:

You will be shown the village, markets, temples and monuments in the local area. You will have several opportunities to go to the local town called Singburi. Here you can check your e-mails, go shopping and get a Thai SIM card for your mobile. There is also a pool in Singburi where you can go to swim, relax and sunbathe.

Games, cooking lesson, discussions:

Done in groups to help you make friends with fellow volunteers, project leaders and programme staff. This is a great way to learn the language and a fun way to experience the new culture.

Leisure time:

You will have time to explore the local area. There are plenty of opportunities for free time. You can relax around the eco-house, read, go swimming, shopping etc. The project co-ordinators are happy to show you around and point out the beautiful and amazing highlights that Thailand has to offer. Your weekends are your free time so feel free to arrange extra excursions if you’d like.

This Week in Detail

See The Intro Week In Detail

This option is a great chance to know more about Thailand, bond with your fellow participants, and learn about the local surrounding area. You will learn about Thai culture, Thai language and have a

taste of what has made Thai cooking so famous around the world through some cooking classes. You will also visit the famous Buddhist Temple: Wat Phranon Jaksi, the old capital of Ayutthaya (including a visit to the Elephant Village), Lopburi’s museum and pagoda. This program below is written to give you an idea of this week (it’s an example):

Monday

After breakfast we have a group meeting and take a short walk around the village before lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon we visit a local handicraft shop before being the special guests of a welcome party with local school students performing a Thai traditional dance for us.

Tuesday

An all day trip to the ancient city of Ayutthaya, many ancient ruins and art works can be seen in this city that was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong when the Thais were forced Southwards by northern neighbours. We will then visit the special “Elephant village” followed by dinner near the river side.

Wednesday

In the morning we start with a Thai lesson, after which will visit some of the beautiful and famous monuments and Buddhist temples near our centre: Wat Phranon Jaksi (A huge reclining Buddha image) and the Bang-Rachan hero monument. In the afternoon there will a trip to the local town, here you can do some shopping, swimming or check email. In the evening, we will dinner at a famous Thai BBQ restaurant.

Thursday

In the morning, we visit a local school and join in with the local students. During school holidays (from mid-March till mid-May and in October), when the school is closed, we may visit a palm tree farm or other local life instead. After noon we pick up from yesterday with another Thai lesson and then have an interactive Thai cooking class: after a short Thai lesson introducing the different ingredients you will learn how to cook these ingredients into a renowned Thai dish, and have it for dinner!

Friday

A full day travel with several visits in the Lopburi province. Some of the highlights would be visit to the famous Somdet Phra Narai National Museum and the Wat Phraputhabaht Temple (Buddha’s footprint) and we will experience some local cuisine at a nearby restaurant.

Weekends

Weekends are always free in most programs, but participants can delve deeper with advanced Thai Language lessons or hire local transport to visit the Swimming pool or shops in Singburi Town. (these are extra-curricular, please request on site!). Also feel free to ask friendly staff for help in getting to some of Thailand’s many nearby tourist attractions.

Week Two: Adventure Option Week – Take Your Pick!

The second week is option week where you can choose from one of the following activities:

  • Elephant conservation
  • Trekking in the jungle
  • Buddhism and culture

You do not have to to decide which option you pick when you book, you can wait to see what takes your fancy when you are in Thailand.

Week two option one: Elephant Week

Elephants are the symbol of Thailand and are held as sacred in Thai Culture. Training along side the Mahouts, the Thai Elephant keepers, this week is all about hanging out with the elephants!

Your role this week will be the caring for and feeding the elephants, bathing them, taking the older female elephants for walks, and generally helping out.

Then you will actually get to learn how to ride the Elephants, heading off through forests and around the camp. This week is an unrivalled opportunity to learn about Elephants and connect with your very own! Take it for baths, feed it and get to know him, but just be warned you can´t take it with you when your week is up.

According to World Wildlife Fund estimates, only 2,000-3,000 elephants remain in the wild in Thailand. The numbers of these majestic animals are gradually shrinking as elephants and villages compete to survive on the land. Sadly, domesticated elephants roam through Thailand’s cities with their mahouts, begging for food and performing tricks for tourists.

During this elephantine adventure of a week you’ll learn about the importance of elephants in Thai culture, their needs and the social problems. Be prepared to get down and quite literally dirty. Daily chores include cleaning (that’s mucking out to you and me) and feeding these majestic animals. You’ll also learn gardening skills to impress the folks back home!

Don’t miss out on the chance to experience the thrill of white water rafting in the nearby river over the weekend. Don’t worry, if you prefer calmer waters, there’s always the swimming pool. Please note, Thailand’s tropical climate does give way to the occasional violent thunderstorm, torrential rain and flooding so the schedule may be subject to change during that time.

Week two option two: Trekking Option

During the second week you and other participants have the option to go trekking in Khao Yai National Park, a lush park not often visited by other tourists. This again will be a unique experience. You will be roughing it, but in beautiful surroundings. After this experience, you will have a lot to boast about when you go home as you will be sleeping in tents and surviving with the basics – we’re sure you will have a lot of fun!

The guides are very friendly and you will really enjoy yourself! Khao Yai National Park highest mountain is about 1,351 meters above sea level.

The tropical moist evergreen forest covers the central area of Khao Yai National Park. There is a rich diversity of plants (about 2,000 species), towering trees draped in mosses, tangled trunks of the strangling figs, drooping lianas, spiny rattan palms and delicate ferns. There is always something new to discover in the forest.

Please note that the trekking is not for the faint-hearted and the itinerary is subject to change depending on seasons, weather conditions, group size etc. so please be flexible.

After breakfast we will set off for Khao Yai National Park, make a pit stop to get food supplies before we get there. We arrive at about 4.30pm and will then set up the camp and have a Thai dinner. In the evening we will do an exciting night safari.

Tuesday

Early morning we will have breakfast, tidy up the camp site and head off into the jungle. We set up the camp, cook and learn about survival techniques from the experienced park rangers.

Wednesday

After breakfast you we go trekking to different stunning waterfalls, feel free to jump in. Again we will camp at a campsite with amazing views

Thursday

Today we trek back to the rangers base to check into our air-conditioned rooms. Here you will be able relax those aching limbs and get that well deserved shower. We will stay here for 1 night, taking in the glorious scenic views.

Friday

We make our way back to Singburi and the Eco houses (see first week).

Weekends are always free after Jungle Trekking programme. Relax at the Eco-House accommodation, take a local taxi into town, expand your sightseeing and visit the many more sites in the central provinces or take a bus to Bangkok city for the weekend.

Remember to take the following with you on the trek:

  • Raincoat
  • Sleeping bag and fleece – it can get cold in the early mornings
  • Towel
  • Trekking gear – good walking boots (trainers at your own risk)
  • Cap or sun hat
  • T-shirt and shorts
  • Torch
  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Snacks (crisps and cookies) the food menu will be very limited in the jungle!

We will provide the tent, first aid kit and food. Please note that this trek can be physically demanding and on some days you could be trekking for four to seven hours (with breaks). You will be trekking deep in the jungle, climbing vines and walking up and down mountains. Feedback from past volunteers has been that its hard work but one of the most adventurous and fun activities they have ever done. You will end up with lots of stories to tell your family and friends back home.

Week two option three: Buddhism and Culture Option

The Buddhism and Culture programme below is written to give you an idea of this week: The day order may change, however the full programme will still be experienced.

During this week you will visit temples, you have the opportunity to ask your questions about Buddhism to the monks, we will teach you about practising meditation and chanting in a quiet and spiritual environment. Our guide is very knowledgeable and will tell you all you need to know. If you have a real interest in Buddhism & Culture, this is the programme for you!

Buddhism and Culture Option in Detail

During the temple stay you will experience the Thai temple life first hand, and it is pretty impressive and special.

Monday

After breakfast we leave the eco house in Singburi and take you to Khao Yai National Park. On the way we stop for lunch. After dinner you will be introduced to Buddhism & Meditation ethics.

Tuesday

Forget the lie-ins this week as we rise with (or before!) the dawn to give alms to the Monks. After breakfast we will have a discussion with a local monk, where you will have the chance to ask him questions and hear the Buddhist perspective from a monk. Once he leaves we will have lunch followed by a documentary to learn more of Lord Buddha. We will have dinner at the resort and an early bed time is recommended, as we have an early rise next morning.

Wednesday temple stay!

Tonight we stay at a temple. We leave very early morning and upon arrival we will pay respect to the head master of the temple. Today we also learn some of the history of the surrounding area and temple, we will help clean the temple (sweeping leaves). Then luch, your last meal of today, as monks eat only one or two meals a day all before 12:00 (noon). After lunch we will learn walking and sitting meditation forms.

Thursday, today we live like a monk

We will get up early for a session of sitting meditation. Immediately after, the boys will follow the monks around the village to gather alms. The girls will stay at the temple and help prepare the temple for when they return. Upon returning you will come together and pray before breakfast. After breakfast we will be spending the day just like the monks: Meditating, praying, gardening and cleaning the temple ground. Again more evening chanting and early sleep time.

Friday

Awake at the temple. You can give alms to the monks, or stay at the temple. We will eat breakfast and provide gifts for the monks for our appreciation for letting us stay and then return for Singburi Eco-house, visiting Wat Muang in Ang Thong long the way.

Weekend

Weekends are always free after this week. Relax at the Eco-House accommodation, take a local taxi into town, expand your sightseeing and visit the many more sites in the central provinces or take a bus to Bangkok city for the weekend.

Remember
  • Please bring your own white clothes which are not tight or see through, if you don’t have any please buy some before departing to Buddhism and Culture week.
  • Please be calm and quiet during and following meditation and chanting
  • Monks only eat one meal per day so we don’t have dinner on Wednesday
  • Men and women cannot sleep together during temple stay and no passionate contact during temple stay
  • Please do not point your feet to the monks or the Buddha
  • Women are not allowed to stay close to monks or touch the monks so please be cautious.

Week Three

Week three option one: Cultural Immersion Projects

During this week you will have opportunities to help the local community:

  • Help out in a School
  • Build Clay Houses
  • Looking after kids in a local orphanage
  • Boxing Option
Cultural Immersion Projects In Detail

The biggest area in need is education so you will be visiting the local schools during term time or local children or perhaps local police from the village at the Eco house during school holidays. You can chat to the kids, help with both English and maths through playing games, singing songs etc. More information will be given to you about this during your first week.

Accommodation during this week will be either at the eco house or if you prefer, a home-stay. Most of the schools are within walking distance. For those schools that are not, the teacher or a local co-ordinator will transport you there and back. Remember to dress and behave appropriately. The students will look up to you and will attempt to copy your fashion and actions. Ladies, you need to make sure you don’t expose too much skin. Polo shirts/T-shirts, trousers and long skirts are all fine. Also the smarter you dress the more respect you will receive in the classroom.

It can be helpful to bring some materials to help you assist with teaching. For example, books, games and toys. It’s a nice idea to donate these to the school or children once you have left. Pens and paper will be provided. If you have any questions about this week, then please feel free to contact us or talk to the co-ordinators.

If you want to try something different instead then we have the boxing option:

Week Three option two: Muay Thai Boxing Option

During this week you will train in elements of Muay Thai the exciting national sport of Thailand. This is geared for complete beginners so no need to feel intimidated. It is lots of fun and there is no better way to immerse our self in the local culture

Muay Thai Option In More Detail
While you are training you will focus on many different areas, a large part of Thai boxing includes agility, speed and balance. In order to develop each discipline of Muay Thai (i.e. punches, kicks, elbows etc), you will learn exercises and training drills that promote these three important things.

A typical day begins with an early start, getting up at 5.30am. This is necessary so that you are not spending the hottest hours of the day participating in intensive boxing training. You will head for a run to warm up followed by refreshments at the gym. From here you will take training exercises led by our experienced Thai Boxing trainer. Once fully warmed up you will head into the ring to spar one-on-one. Our co-ordinator will translate the instructor’s explanations into English. He will try to teach you some Thai necessary to learn more about the sport.

From 9am you have the option of going to the swimming pool (14km away) or relaxing back at the eco-house with other participants. The morning routine is repeated at around 3pm. The training can be quite intense, so it is important that you have a “warm down” period each day.

You will have the opportunity to take part in optional Tae Kwon Do classes some evenings.

Changing Options

If you think that you may decide to change your option for week three from boxing to the teaching option, or that you may add extra cultural immersion weeks you can do this locally.

Week Four – Beach time (5 nights)

This is usually the travellers favourite part of the programme. You will spend from Monday morning to Saturday morning on the gorgeous island of Koh Tao. This is free time for you to do what you want, when you want.

On Saturday you will be transferred by bus to Bangkok where we have arranged a night in a hotel for you. The hotel is in the busy backpackers centre and great for shopping and a night out. The next day (Sunday) at 8 om your transfer is arranged to Koh Tao. The bus and boat service will drop you off in Paradise on Monday morning at 10 AM. There will be a taxi waiting for you to drop you off at the resort (with beautiful gardens, pool and a 3 min walk to the beach!!)n At 4 PM you meet our rep and she will introduce you to the island life and take you and the other Xtreme Gappers out for dinner!

We do include some fun stuff!

  • Pick up from the pier
  • Introduction evening by our rep, including dinner!
  • Boat trip round the beautiful island, including snorkel gear and lunch!
  • And lots of beach time!

You are welcome to add-on activity’s or not and do your own thing. The rest of the time is free time to sun bathe, snorkel, explore the beautiful island or simply chill out in the many beach bars!

Extra activities you can choose from
Add some Xtreme Activities. If you are an adrenaline junky like us we have some great options for you to add to your beach week.

You could add on:

  • 2 day rock climbing course
  • 2 day freediving course
  • 5 Muay Thai sessions
  • 1/2 day discover scuba dive experience
  • a full adventure day (incl. abseiling, jungle tour, speed-boating)

Email us for more details and prices.

What happens at the end of your programme?

Return transfer is not included in the price of the trip, please budget about £15 to cover this, our rep can help you organise a ticket.

You leave the island on the Saturday morning at 10 am and will arrive back in Bangkok around 20.30pm. You will be taken directly to bus station. On arrival in Bangkok you can get a taxi to the airport, or you can travel onto your next destination. In the past, travellers on the 4-week option have preferred to spend one final night in Bangkok making onwards travel arrangements for Sunday.

Remember, if you do fly back on the Saturday, do not arrange your flight any earlier than 11pm, better even just after midnight. If you stay an extra day, you can arrange your flight for any time on the Sunday.

Please note Itineraries are flexible and subject to change.

An easier option although a little more expensive is to arrange a flight from Koh Samui, this is three hours from Koh Tao by boat and there is a transfer service (payable locally) where you can catch a connecting flight to Bangkok which takes one hour. This is advantageous because it takes you directly to the international airport.

Accommodation

During this programme you will be located in 3 different locations to get to know about different parts of Thailand. All transfers will be taken care of (arrival transfer is also included providing your arrive on set start dates).

Eco Houses week 1 and 3

During the first three weeks you will be staying in Eco houses. Normally you share your ensuite room with 1 or 2 others of the same sex. The rooms have a good sized bathroom with western toilet end shower.

To relax you can chill in the gardens or in the communal area where you can hangout with the others. Here also your meals are served.

During the Intro week (week 1), Muay Thai or Cultural Immersion week (week 3) your accommodation is situated about 10 km from the town of Singburi. In Singburi you will find all the amenities you could need i.e. internet, shops, swimming pool, hospital, pharmacy, banks and restaurants. There are plenty of trips into Singburi or you can easily take a taxi (about 15 minutes).

The doors and windows are screened (to protect you from mosquitoes). There are fans in the room. For your valuables, we have lockers available. We strongly encourage you to use them, even if our centres are generally very safe. There are limited laundry facilities so expect to wash your clothes by hand. All participants are expected to be environmentally aware and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and organised. All food is included during your stay. The meals will be typical Thai fare, including plenty of rice dishes. All meals (Thai style) are included.

Facilities:

  • Transportation- Our Eco houses are about 10-15 kilometre from the city, it’s a little bit difficult to travel to town by public transportation but it can be done by local taxi.  Taxis can be called though our staff at any time.
  • Money issues—there are numbers of bank and ATM machine near by. The nearest one is just a km or so away at Thakam market.
  • Internet use—internet cafes can be found in Singburi town. Our accommodation has free wireless internet for participants, but we advise caution in bringing bulky valuables with you.
  • International Phone calls – you can buy an international telephone card (with PIN code) in Singburi. The best ones are from CAT PhoneNet, with which you can call from any phone in Thailand. They can be bought at the post office or CAT office. Don’t hesitate to ask your coordinator for assistance.
Beach week accommodation

During the beach week you stay in a very nice resort. You share a fan room with someone on the same gender. The resort has a pool in a lovely garden. There is a restaurant and a bar. The resort is just a 2 minute walk away from all bars and restaurants and The Beach! During this week only the welcome meal is included. But not to worry meals are cheap and there are many nice restaurants.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

In general this works the same for the other countries like The Netherlands and United States too, but please contact the nearest Thai Consulate for visa inquiries.

Please note that you are responsible for arranging your own visa. Xtreme Gap cannot be held responsible if you fail to travel with the correct visa. So please check with your local embassy personally. The previous information is meant as a guide, but visa rules change often and frequently. So do not take this as the current law.

How much cash do I need out there?

Take €100 a week and you will be living very well. Remember that everything is included on this trip. So all the food, the accommodation, the transfers, airport pick up and loads of activities and adventures along the way are already paid for.

How many people are there in the group?
Usually there is an average of 15 fellow travel mates on the trip, but it can be more or less. Did you know that you can meet other travellers before you head out to Thailand? Simply sign up to our online travellers meeting point and you start to chat to other people interested in Thailand. Once you book, securing a place with £100 or €100 deposit, you will be given access to an exclusive buddy list. This enables you to talk directly with other people signed up your trip! So you already make some new friends on your trip before you go!

Can I combine trips?
Yes, you can start off with this trip and then do some backpacking in Laos afterwards for example. Another really popular option is to get a 60 day visa before you leave Thailand, and then bolt on the Koh Tao adventure after this trip giving you two months in Thailand.

Trip Combos

Did you know we can help you plan an epic adventure? You can combine this trip with the following trips to extend you travels.

Add on another trip!

Koh Tao Adventure
Test your metal on another paradise island on the Koh Tao Adventure, where you can learn some adventure sports or perhaps learn to dive.
Xtreme Thailand Experience

You might notice that this trip is similar in style to the Xtreme Thailand experience, in many ways it is, the first two weeks are identical. It is a little bit cheaper than the kind experience and the last two weeks are different, what is the difference?

Well apart from price , this trip features more cultural aspects and has less action and activities included, you also stay to your beach week in a different location closer to Bangkok away from the former party (which is why the Xtreme Thailand experiences more expensive).

If budget is not so much the concern we definitely recommend Xtreme Thailand experience, but the Thailand adventure is a lot of fun too. This is not the Xtreme Thailand Experience! This trip does not include the full moon party and the Adventure day.
