Bali Surf Camp Itinerary

The schedule is designed give you ample surf time and still give you plenty of time to chill out and relax after a hard days surfing, there also lots of optional tours you can do (small local payment) to see more of Bali should you wish.

There is no set itinerary as such because with surfing a lot depends on the swell and surf conditions, coupled with the fact we will only take you to places if your abilities are up for it, so that might mean we had to different surf spots every single day. In the week you have five lessons (or guided excursions if you are good enough to not want lessons) but you will have free time to explore the island, and explore you should as Bali is a stunning place to be. Bali is well known to be one of the best surfing locations in the world, and being an island you are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches, with over 360 of them. Whilst most of them are black sand, many provide some of the most incredible surf spots you can imagine.

Saturday is arrival day

  • Beach shuttles run twice daily to different surf spots. One in the early morning one at 2pm.
  • The schedule is varied depending on the surf conditions and weather ensuring you are always surfing at a pot that will match your skill level
  • Optional trips to Night markets, Temples, and Ulu Watu are also available.

360 different surf spots

Bali is world renowned for being one of the top surfing locations in the world, unsurprising really when there are 360 surf spots. You will never get bored of the same location, if the swell is better in one place we will take you there too!

Low instructor – Student Ratio

The instructor to student ratio is 1:2 We also have video playback tuition to help you learn faster. This is important because Bali can have some quite large swell conditions, so you do want to progress faster to get access to the really fun stuff.

It is said that Bali is blessed with more quality surf locations per meter of shoreline than any other country in the world. On this trip you will have surf instructors instructors in the hotel every day with you and working with you to improve your surf skills and take you out to the best surf spots of the day. This gives a very personal service for our guests and for those who would like to take advantage of the marvellous opportunities and to push personal boundaries, this could add a whole new dimension for your visit to the” Island of the Gods”.

An understanding of the numerous surf breaks is paramount and the local knowledge of our professional Brazilian surf instructor will be a wise investment for both beginner and the experienced who visit Bali for the first time.

High teaching standards

We teach you the safest and easiest surfing methods on the beach first with a demonstration and practice. Here we teach you about safe board handling and good water practice. Then it’s into the water for 2 hours of guided surfing. Our surf lessons begin with individually pushing you onto small waves of about 1 ft. Once you’re standing up and riding them with our help, we teach you how to paddle on and catch your own. By the end of the session you will be catching and riding good, long waves to the beach.

Surfaris included

Bali boasts over 20 top quality breaks on the southwest and southeast coasts of the island. Surf trip is for advance surfers who want to surf the best waves on any given day. Don’t worry about a thing, our Brazilian surf guide will drive you to the best spot in the area and surf with you.

With so many waves to choose from and crowd factors, the last thing you want to do after coming all the way to Bali is to miss out on the surf! Not only that, but with so many dangers such as the reef, the rip currents and the pounding Bali waves, you’ll want somebody by your side with the knowledge to point you in the right direction.

Our experienced surf guides have a wealth of local knowledge, secret spots and know the conditions required for certain spots to produce epic surf. Just as important, they know where to line-up so that you can catch the best waves of the day!

The Surf Tour is devoted to providing unforgettable adventures for travelling surfers on the island of Bali.

All Equipment Included

We have a wide range of surf equipment available to use, included in the surf package, from beginner boards, long boards or short boards to suit your experience and style.

Often in the evening you watch the video’s that were made during the day of the surfers in training. This way you can see exactly what went wrong that day…or what went incredibly well!

Itinerary

In order become a Divemaster you have to go through various stages. The following is an estimate of the time spent on each you need to go through to become a Divemaster. If you are already a qualified diver you can skip the courses you have already done.

Open Water Qualifications

Open Water course. Duration: 5 days

The Open Water Course consists of confined water training in our pool, scuba dive theory, and four open water dives at world class dive sites located around the Gilis. We have a huge variety of marine life in the area, and over the course of your four dives, you have a good chance of seeing big stuff like sharks and turtles, as well as some fascinating smaller stuff like octopus, cuttlefish, lionfish and scorpionfish.

Advanced Adventurer

The Advanced Adventurer course is designed to build on the knowledge you acquired in your Open Water course, give you new and exciting underwater experiences, and fine tune your diving skills. The course consists of five dives. Two of the dives are compulsory (the deep and navigation dives) and the other three you may choose from a variety of options, the most popular being: night dive, naturalist dive, nitrox dive, computer dive, peak performance buoyancy or photography dive. There are no quizzes, exams or videos on the advanced course – it’s all about diving.

For each dive you receive an extended briefing and debrief from your instructor regarding your chosen option. Upon completion of this course you will be certified to dive to 30m.

Open Water 5 days

  • 5 nights
  • Day 1Arrive at 11am and Course Orientation at 5pm
  • Day 2; Theory / Pool
  • Day 3; Theory / Pool
  • Day 4; 2 x OW Dives
  • Day 5; 2 x OW Dives

Advanced Adventurer

  • 3 days, 3 nights
  • Day 1; Arrive at 11am, pool refresher session and 1 x dive
  • Day 2; 2 dives
  • Day 3; 2 dives

Rescue and EFR

The Rescue Diver course is taught together with the Emergency First Response (EFR) Course. The EFR course is a short course that combines CPR and First Aid into a single course and teaches you the same internationally recognized emergency protocols used by paramedics and doctors worldwide, while recognizing that you are a lay person and keeping it simple.

Read about the Rescue and ERF section in more detail
The Rescue Diver course is designed to build on your skills as a diver and your newly acquired Respond Right skills by exposing you to hypothetical emergency situations in a diving environment. You will learn to refine and further develop your accident prevention and handling skills, as well as learning to manage a diving emergency if you’re ever faced with one. The course consists of theory work, videos and practical application while diving. You will learn a variety of rescue techniques so that you will be prepared to face a multitude of diving emergency situations, from assisting panicked divers both above and below the surface, to handling unconscious divers underwater and orchestrating missing diver searches. The rescue course is a practical and fun course, and moves your diving skills on from focusing on your own diving to being more aware of others in the water.

By the end of the course you’ll feel confident that you have the skills to deal with situations if they should arise in a diving environment, which adds to your enjoyment and expertise as a diver, and is the perfect step up to the Divemaster level.

  • Lead dive trips and tours.
  • Conduct discover Scuba programmes.

  • Teach selected specialty diver programmes.

Visas

The Visa required will depend on the length of stay planned. Visa on arrival (30-days US$25) You automatically get 30-days on arrival when you enter into the country. You will need to pay for this at the airport, and it is best to bring US$ notes dated from the year 2000 onwards for the payment. Most airport immigration offices will not accept credit cards, so be prepared with the cash.

Once your first 30-days runs out you can visit the Immigration office in Lombok and apply for an additional 30-days for around $50. This involves one day spent in Lombok and a lot of Indonesia paperwork, so can be a day wasted if you are on a tight schedule! If you know you want to be here for longer than one month, then it is best to come prepared with a 60-day tourist visa.

Tourist Visa (60-days, cost depends on the Embassy where visa application is processed) For anyone planning to be here for up to 2 months, a 60-day tourist visa is definitely the easiest way to go. These visas need to be pre-arranged and collected from an embassy outside of the country before entering into Indonesia. The time taken to process the visa is usually 3 working days, and the cost will depend on which embassy you are using. You can check the latest requirements on our Visa section.

What else can I do other than diving and freediving?
Apart from the tourist attractions like temples and waterfalls, and the usual beach activities like sunbathing and snorkeling, you can go fishing, horse riding, water skiing, wakeboarding, and there is a surf break to the south of the island for the experienced surfer. If any of you are golfers there is a fantastic 18 hole course 10 minutes away in the speed boat. It’s not a cheap day out when compared to everything else in Indonesia, but good value for western standards: transport, green fee, clubs, buggy, caddy, lunch and drinks will cost you about $100. The best thing to do on your day of is chilling as this is the island for it!

Are there police on the island?
There are no police on Trawangan, however the local population have put together an equivalent organization called SATGAS. They answer to the Kepala Desa (Head of the Village) so if, for example, you lose anything they’ll be your best chance for finding it. There office is located just behind the harbour.
Are there street sellers on the island?
No, the aggressive hawkers you may have had experiences with in Bali are not allowed onto the island. However on your way to the Gilis you will possibly come via Bangsal harbour. The hawkers there will try to sell you everything from cigarettes to return tickets, telling you that these are not available on the islands. Everything they offer is available on the island and probably cheaper.

Can we swim to the other Gilis?
While it is perfectly safe to swim and snorkel around the Gilis you should never try to swim to the next island, it is much further than it looks and the currents in the middle of the channel can be very strong even for the best of swimmers.

Is Gili Trawangan safe?
There are no cars, motorbikes, in fact no motorized transport on Trewangan,so no traffic accident will happen. Everything is very close together so there’s no chance of getting lost. The locals are also very friendly and always keep an eye out, so finding staying safe will not be a problem. However just line in every country there is the hazard of getting drunk and feeling unwell. Take it easy as you will always dive the next day. The current of the sea around the Gili’s is very strong so skinny dipping after dark is also not a good idea.

Do I have to bring much cash?
On the island Visa/Mastercard, Travellers cheques, and almost any foreign currency are accepted in the western run restaurants. There is also an ATM/cash point machine on the island, however it does not accept all cards and it runs out of cash quite regularly so bring some rupiah as a back up. You can change money at the local money changers and even get cash on credit cards but the exchange rates will not be in your favour and commissions will be charged. We go to Lombok for shopping once a week and at the same time get cash from ATM’s for our customers when the machines on the island do not work.

Is there Malaria on the Gili Trawangan?

No, despite what you may have heard there is no malaria on Gili Trawangan. Some areas in Lombok (20 minutes by boat) however are known to have it. If you have to take anti malarial medication don’t use Larium, as in about 50% of cases it produces unpleasant side effects when combined with diving.

Do I need to be super fit to learn freediving?
No, you do not need to be fit to learn to free dive. Eben if you have to much body fit, have not been working out for a while and you smoke you can join and learn how to free dive.

Do I need to have scuba dive experience
No, this is something totally different to scuba diving. You do however need to love water, as this is where you will be spending a lot of your time!

How long are the courses and can I add extra weeks?

The Open Water course to Divemaster course you attend if you do not have any prior experience (OW to DM). This course takes 8 weeks.

The Advanced Open Water to Divemaster course you can attend if you are already an Open Water diver (AOW to DM). This course takes 6 weeks.

The Rescue to Divemaster course you can do when you are already an Advanced Open Water diver (rescue to DM). This course takes 5 weeks.

You can add on an extre weeks to built up your CV. You will be ‘working’ as a Divemaster at our dive school so you can built up experience which will help you getting a job as a Divemaster in the future.

How to get there
To get to the Gili’s you need to fly to Bali. From here you need to take a boat to Gili Trawangan. The boat ride is included, but there is no airport pick up or hotel in Bali included. This can be arranged for you however. The boat ride from Bali to the Gili’s is about 2 hours by fast boat. If you are already on Bali we also can arrange to pick you up from your hotel.

When
We dive all year around here and conditions are usually good. During rainy season (normally Dec-Mar) the visibility is less but this time is also when we can see Manta Rays. The rest of the year visibility is 20 meters+!

Free diving as the name suggest is all about freedom under water. It’s amazing what you can achieve when you push yourself (and when you have the proper instruction) makes this in with a beautiful tropical island deep clear blue seas and superb free diving instruction from some of the world’s top free dive instructors and you’re onto a winner.

Freediving In The Gili Islands

The Gili Islands located just a short distance away from Bali are the perfect location to learn to free dive. Based at a top free diving school, you will be under the instruction of some of the worlds best free dive instructors, where you can learn the theory and skills necessary to dive deep on a single breath of air.

Whilst we offer free diving courses in lots of different locations all over the world, there’s something very special about the Gili Islands, maybe it’s because you are not limited by depth (if you could go deeper than 200m although you certainly won’t be able to do that on this course). Perhaps you just want a taste of this exciting sport, or you really want to develop your free diving skills in which case we have some pretty advanced courses as well.

If you want to learn more about free diving check this Freediving link.

Highlights

  • Learning the theory behind Apnea and overcoming your fear to go deeper
  • Training under British national record holder Mike Board
  • Experiencing the awesome feeling the first time you break the negative buoyancy barrier becoming completely weightless.
  • Discovering more amazing things your body is truly capable of when you learn how to master it properly.
  • Checking out the beautiful underwater world surrounding the Gili Islands.
  • Enjoying the tropical island lifestyle sitting on white sandy beaches with the coconut arrak!

Gili Freediving Programme Indonesia (2)

Itinerary

We have two options in the Freedive course. The first one is a 1 week pack. You have 5 full on freedive course days! This gives you a couple of days to chill out as well.

  • Complete a 1 Week Beginner to Advanced
  • Complete a 2 week Beginner to Deep Dive Course

The Beginner and Advanced Freedive Course What’s the difference?

Beginner:

The Level 1 Freediver Course is an entry level course designed to teach the fundamental skills of breath holding and freediving. This course is suitable for anyone interested in improving their overall comfort underwater, or for those with previous freediving experience, interested in developing the correct techniques to extend their limits. This two day course is comprised of two academic sessions and two open water sessions.

Advanced:

This level 2 course will equip you with further knowledge of the mammalian dive reflex and how to initiate the best response for Freediving. You will learn new advanced equalization techniques and apnea training methods to carry you past 20 meters and develop the skills necessary to Freedive to depths up to 30 meters.

Deep Diving Freediving course

If you decide to join this trip for 2 weeks, you will also do the Deep dive course. We take you deeper and learn you more about breathing techniques!

The two week freedive programme includes the Beginner, Advanced and Deep dive course.

People that join usually wish to maximize their potential and see just how deep they can go! Students train progressively over the duration of the course and increase both breath-hold and depth from day to day.

Certification

Once you have completed your initial training you will be a certified SSI Freediver. SSI certification is recognized world wide so your diving experiences will be limitless.

We also have Master courses but you have to be freediving for 6 months already if you want to join this course, if you are interested you can send us and email.

Yoga classes included

Whenever you feel like it you can attend the yoga classes. Because we feel you benefit from doing yoga, helps you to learn to control your breading, we include 2 sessions per week.

About your instructors

We work with some of the top freediving schools in the world, and the Gili Islands School is on we of those with out a doubt. Your instructors Kate and Mike have an impressive roster of awards.

Freedive Instructor Kate Middleton won 1st place overall in the South East Asia Breathless Freediving competition in Phuket Thailand from 17-20 Feb 2011.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

Apart from the tourist attractions like temples and waterfalls, and the usual beach activities like sunbathing and snorkelling, you can go fishing, horse riding, water skiing, wakeboarding, and there is a surf break to the south of the island for the experienced surfer.

“Freediving is one of the best things i have ever done!
It’s such an amazing and peaceful experience to dive in the wonderful blue ocean and explore the underwater world while holding the breath. The very experienced and super nice instructors made me feel very comfortable and safe in the water and they taught me how to explore and enjoy the underwater-world. See more reviews here.”
Helen Stewart
” if you like the idea of something a little more extreme to scuba, being able to dive deeper than you normally would even with a tank, experiencing diving on a new and competitive level (if you like), rather than just ‘looking at fish’ i would strongly recommend you to join this programme. You get a real sense of achievement every time you push a little deeper and test your own limits.  more reviews here.”

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have mosquito net in the house?

Yes, We have. There are a mosquito net in the Fan room. The A/C room no need the mosquito net.

Want to know more about Indonesia and Bali? Check out our Indonesia Blog for further details.

Do you have an Internet Access in the house centre?
Yes, We have. There is the local internet access in the house centre. Participants should bring their Laptop. The Internet is for free off charge and good enough for Email,Facebook, Blog etc. There are many restaurant and coffee shop nearby 2 minute walk with free Wi-fi as well.
How do I get around?

If you’re here for a short time, and only staying in Ubud, you can easily get along by walking everywhere … this is one of the charms of Ubud. (Just watch out for uncovered sections of sidewalks, and please do your best to avoid stepping on the offerings the Balinese leave at the entrances to their family compounds and businesses!)

If you’re here for longer and wish to do some independent island exploration, bicycles are available for rent. Make sure you get a good helmet … roads are narrow, often full of pot holes, dogs are everywhere, and the Balinese like to drive like stock car racers! While driving, repeat this mantra: “Slow and Go, Slow and Go … Om.” There are plenty of drivers ready and willing to take you anywhere. Walking is still the best choices for you.

What kind of clothes will I need?
If you visit between November and April a rain poncho or umbrella will come in handy, and both can be purchased inexpensively here. As this time is Bali’s summer, the rains tend to be warm and humid, but a light jacket can be useful for evenings. May through October is typically dry season and winter. Comfortable sandals are a must, and should be easy to take off as most Balinese do not wear shoes indoors. Same day laundry service is inexpensive and plentiful, so you’re better off to pack light. Don’t forget your bathing trunks!

Anytime you go into a temple for a ceremony or tourist attraction you MUST wear a long sleeve shirt, pants or preferably sarong that cover your knees. Women and men have separate requirements.

Are there any health concerns I need to be aware of?

It is recommended that you visit your GP, personal physician or a travel health clinic 4 to 8 weeks before your departure to Indonesia. Recommended vaccinations often include hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and polio. Bali is not a high-risk area for malaria and the tablets can be considered controversial, we recommend that you do some research and make your own decision on this. Dengue fever is another mosquito borne illness to be made aware of.

You might want to bring a prescription of Keflex, or another type of oral antibiotic that can help with stomach ailments. Even though you will be eating in good restaurants, there is always a chance that you can get Bali Belly – a mild dysentery that passes in a few days.

Can I stay longer?

You will probably want to! If you would like to stay more than 30 days, you can apply for a 60-day tourist visa at the Consulate of Indonesia closest to you. You will likely have to show proof of a ticket to leave the country.

Do I need a visa?

Yes, a visa is required for Indonesia. A visa-upon-arrival system is in place for most countries including Australia, Canada, US & EU citizens. When you arrive at the airport in Denpasar you will enter the Visa-on-arrival line, where you will be asked for U$25.00 and your passport will be stamped for 30 days from the date of arrival. Upon leaving, a 150,000 rupiah departure tax will be assessed.

N.B. – If your passport is due to expire within 6 months, we advise you renew. On occasion, Indonesia has not allowed tourists into the country, and your airline might not allow you on the plane.

Week 4: Action & Surf Week

There are not that many set activities planned for the fourth week, this is because you will want your own space and time to chill check out the beaches and go surfing. Don’t worry there is plenty to do, lots of day trips and tours can be arranged at the front desk if you have had enough of the beaches.

Here is what is included:

Surfing

Try out some surfing. One lesson is included, but you can book some extra lessons locally if you are up for it. Canggu beaches provide a wild wave that is suitable for surfing. Echo beach is the famous surf beach in Canggu. There you will meet other surfers who try to conquer the wild wave.

Most people joining the Xtreme Bali Experience have little or no surf experience, and that’s okay because you will be in the capable hands of our top pro surfers. Within a couple of hours of being in the water will get you up and surfing, teaching the theory, the safety and who knows may be stoking a new addiction.

If you want to properly experience surfing in Bali, then we recommend bolting on the surfing in Bali trip, if you and intermediate that can really develop the skills, and just have an amazing time ripping it up on some of the more challenging waves, even if you are a beginner in one week we can get you to a pretty good standard with a lot of fun in the process.

Yoga Classes

With intricate Hindu temples, surrounded by lush jungles and emerald green rice paddies, there is a very spiritual vibe to Bali. What better way to explore this, then trying out some yoga and really soaking up the Bali experience.

Surrounded by green gardens and clean air, Yoga Shala Canggu is secluded from the hustle bustle of Kuta and Seminyak.

Built newly in 2010, a 58meter2 (30pax max capacity) yoga studio has a 270° view of the beautiful surrounding of Canggu as the background, yoga here is tranquil and peaceful. The yoga hall is equipped with fans, power plugs (cd tape available), and low-energy light bulbs. Yoga Mats and blocks are provided.

Yoga not your thing? Then you can have an hour massage instead. The perfect way to sooth those post surf aching shoulders.

The Xtreme Bali Experience is designed to give you a real taste of Bali, taking you to places that you wouldn’t normally see on your typical backpacker tourist trail. There are activities that you will look back on, like learning to surf, that will add some serious kudos to your travels, there will be breathtaking moments surrounded by incredible landscapes, and some bizarre moments when you know you are definitely not a home (like having high tea in the mystical tea house). There is plenty of chill time, and opportunities to go off and explore on your own as well, we believe that you should have plenty of time to do your own thing as well which really helps you soak up the unique atmosphere that Bali has to offer.

Not included on the final week but optional extras bookable locally:

Get Cultural and Explore Bali

For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes our tour guide will point out all the best temples and volcanoes and take you to the most interesting parts of the island. Each day trip is unique, in that we ask you what you would most like to see, but some of the most popular options include:

  • The thriving capital and cultural heart of Bali: Ubud
  • The enchanted monkey forest
  • Rice field terraces, ok so there are a lot of these in Bali, but some are simply spectacular
  • Bbarong/kecak fire dance
  • Kkintamani volcano or Gunung Batur a semi active Volcano
  • Alternatively you can head out on a beach trip to places like Uluwatu, Bukit, Padang, Nusa Dua or Jimbaran

Sightseeing in Tanah Lot

One of the things that makes Bali so unique amongst all the different islands that make up Indonesia, is that the main religion is Hindu. This gives Bali a completely different feel to most of the other places in the country. Remember that Indonesia is the most populated Islamic country in the world, so this little island has had to withstand a lot of external influence to remain true to its Hindu roots.

Evidence is everywhere, with ornate Hindu temples popping up in the strangest of places, you can be strolling through the jungle, walking through a rice paddy and if you are approaching the coast at Tanah Lot you will be sure to see plenty of Hindu temples there as well.

Tanah Lot refers to a collection of temples perched on rocky outcrops right by the coast,

The temples are undoubtedly impressive and not definitely a must see experience when visiting Bali. During the trip we will take you to Tanah Lot so you can check out the temples for yourself, and most likely you will encounter the Hindu ritual of leaving offerings to the spirits, usually made up of food wrapped in banana leaves left out to appease the gods.

Not much evidence goes on that this works however, although the stray dogs and cats do rather well out of it.

Trip End

The Xtreme Bali Experience finishes on the Saturday making it 27 nights.

Please note airport drop-off is not included but is easily arranged through the reception of the hostel, this will

If you would like further information on this trip, or Bali in general hit the get trip notes button or contact us on the web form below. cost about £15 you can also opt to bolt on the Gili Islands Adventure after this trip finishes, this is the perfect place to learn to dive, laze on some beautiful sandy beaches and try some of our xtreme activities like free diving!

Accommodation

Week 1-3

During the Intro, Adventure and Cultural Immersion Weeks the accommodation will vary depending on the project, but will be in shared bedrooms at our house. Meals during these weeks are included. The food is traditional Balinese for 3 meals/day on weekdays, weekends (2 meals/ day)

All participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and tidy.

During the Action and Surf week accommodation is at Echo Beach – THE Surf location in Bali

7 nights  in luxury shared accommodation, please note no food is included during the Surf week but you can eat for about two pounds per meal. There are lots of restaurants locally.

Our Accommodation is an ideal place to start and end each day and by making this your base, we will help you to feel, experience and explore the real Bali. The perfect peaceful escape from the over developed and bustling, even manic areas of Kuta and Seminyak, which although only a short twenty five minutes drive away, seem to be a whole world away.

Echo Beach is a good destination to spend your sunset time, stunning sunset view, great beach side restaurants and cafes, surfing, great atmosphere and vibes; a nice getaway from hubbub of Kuta and a good alternative sunset dinner besides Jimbaran.

The central part of the beach is long gone, replaced by a substantial retaining wall which both protects and provides a large recreation area to some of Canggu’s restaurants, best known of which (and famous for its barbecues) is Echo Beach House.

With benches, tables and umbrellas scattered in front of the sea, and the surfing happening within easy eye shot, it’s a great place to nurse a few cold drinks, munch down on the food and enjoy the show that goes on, in and out of the water — no shortage of posers here!
