Vietnam Gap Year

Vietnam Gap Year programs offer a genuine opportunity to get aquained with an incredible country. Vietnam, located under China on over 1000 miles of coastline has had a pretty turbulent past. The War with the USA is common knowledge, (and reminders are inescapable when you visit the country on a Vietnam gap year, but there troubled past goes back way beyond the Americans. The French before them were at war with the Vietnamese, in short the Vietnamese are survivors.

On your Vietnam Gap Year there are lots of different options you can choose from, discovering the country in style, touring the country from top to bottom of focussing on a particular region, all have their advantages.

Round The World - South East Asia

South East Asia is a very interesting, fun, safe and beautiful part of the world. It has a well trodden backpacking route for good reason. This is a flexible trip showing you the best sites in Thailand, Laos and Vietnam! From bustling cities, to Unesco sites and from stunning beaches and Islands to lakes with dolphins.

When the Xtreme Gap Year team went on a research trip to Vietnam, we had a lot of fun with plenty of highlights. From stunning cities like the former Saigon (now Ho Chi Mihn city), rich with colonial architecture and traffic conditions which probably rate as the worst in the world, to the impressive and somewhat surprisingly peaceful Hanoi in the North, the Communist bastion during the Vietnam war.

Some of the adventures on offer on a Vietnam Gap year will not disappoint either.

Did you know Vietnam has one of the worlds top Kite Surfing spots in Munie beach? A small coastal fishing village with some pretty impressive sand dunes and plenty of wind pooring of the South China Sea.

The hells angel in you can tour the country on the back of a motor cycle with the easy riders, a collection of local motorcycle fanatics who will take you around the country in style on the back of their bikes, and what a tour it is too, with some of the most impressive scenery in South East Asia.

Anyone on a Vietnam gap year should also take time to check out the legacy of the Vietnam war at the Chu Chi Tunnels (accessible from Ho Chi Minh City), a hugely impressive collection of underground tunnels built by the Viet Kong when fighting the French and then further developed during the war with the USA. The tunnels stretch for hundreds of miles and many thousands of fighters lived in them fro a decade, becuase of this incredible sacrifices like this, the North Vietnamese were able to defeat the USA.

Vietnam is also (justly) known for its incredible scenery. The diversity of the county alone is impressive, but to be stood on the deck of a Vietnamese Dhow and pass through the 1000´s of limestone pinnacles making up Halong Bay is a definite highlight. Emerald Green water reflecting the sun light. The boats dock at floating markets where who communities have spring up living on the water, it is traditional as you can get, although may be with a hint of tourism these days.

The traditional way of life is still ever present in Vietnam, the trick is to get off the beat path and into the countryside where you will discover villages surrounded in rice paddys, water buffaloes ploughing the lands as they have done for centuries.
