Water Jet Pack or Fly Boarding

If you’ve never experienced seen fly boarding before, you are in for a treat. Whether it was trying to be Marty McFly on a hover board or getting inspired by Ironman, nothing can really describe the sensation of blasting several cubic pounds of thrust out of jets attached to your feet. Unbelievably cool yet quite easy to pick up you have the option to jet packs or fly boards.

Skydiving

Playa del Carmen is probably one of the best drop zones in the world, it’s up there with Cairns mission beach, and is one of the few places you can dive over the water beach and jungle. This makes the some incredible views if you don’t open your eyes and stop screaming for a second, as you plummet at terminal velocity back to Earth. Run in conjunction with skydive Mexico, who have been leading skydives in Mexico for the last 19 years This is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

We offer Tandem jumps only in this activity is weather dependent so we will try and get you up in the skies as quickly as possible. Please note if you are doing any diving activities do not attempt to jump within 24 hours diving.

Xtreme Over The Edge Adventure

On the Xtreme over the edge adventure you will have a mental day out zip lining, abseiling and exploring Cenotes (underground rivers and caves). You will also get the opportunity to free dive some impressive Marine life and you might get to see turtles, rays and plenty of colourful coral.

You will head out relatively early and be picked up and taken off to meet your guide. You will be given all the equipment you need although we advise you to bring some comfortable clothes a towel and swimming gear. Sunglasses and a hat plus and spending money would be very useful.

The Xtreme over the edge adventure takes place in a special eco-adventure Park and return transfers are included.

Paramotoring

The Mexico fitness Boot Camp is unlike our Thailand Fitness Bootcamp in that it focuses purely on Crossfit. You have probably heard of Crossfit as it has literally taken the fitness world by storm. Crossfit consists of very high-intensity workouts usually no more than one hour per day. Now if that doesn’t sound like enough training, believe us when we tell you you do not need any more. It is a world of pain that gets better every single time you do it. When people tell you fitness and exercise is addictive, around about the third session you will understand why.

You can choose whether you take your cross that class in the morning, or afternoon (we advise the morning) and you can also focus on less intense activities like yoga.

The goal of the Mexico fitness Boot Camp is not only to provide you with an awesome holiday, but for you to come away with the more capable body and positive state of mind.

We will give you a total mental and physical makeover focusing on the following key fitness elements.

We will work on your cardiovascular and respiratory stamina.

You should feel your strength, flexibility and stamina increasing significantly throughout your stay. How much you develop for basically depend on how long you go for, and how hard you work at it, but everything is there to help support you reach your fitness goals and come home feeling a lot healthier physically capable and mentally blown away.

You will find it completely incredible the transformation of what you can achieve when you are physically on form. It affects everything how you feel, how you think how you are.

Crossfit Works

Cross fit works. It uses functional movements with constant variation executed at high intensity. Because it uses functional movements it’s not just strength and fitness that increases. Your coordination, agility and balance should improve, giving you everything you need to lay down the basis for a completely new active healthy lifestyle.

Strength training.

Cross fit is very good for high-intensity cardio workouts, but if you’re gain is to build muscle mass you can also do Olympic lifting.

The Mexico fitness Boot Camp is headed up by the top cross fit instructors in Mexico. They are currently ranked number one and number two respectively. Whilst lessons are delivered predominantly in Spanish, they can also explain in English if necessary.

Supportive environment

Another thing that surprises people when they join the Mexico fitness Boot Camp is how supportive the atmosphere is. Sometimes you need a push to fulfil your fitness goals, and most of the time you need to have the time or energy to go to the gym and do the necessary work. If you do you feel alone, it’s just no fun hitting the treadmill because you feel you should.

At the Mexico fitness Boot Camp, you will go somewhere new, join like-minded people who all want to achieve their fitness goals. From your first session you will feel completely welcome and you will make friends very quickly.

Yoga Included

Included are five Naam yoga sessions per week. Naam Yoga over is widely regarded as the best yoga form for healing. The yoga sessions are tailored towards your fitness goals, with the aim of supporting your training. During the sessions you can expect to get very involved, while working on your flexibility you will be having a lot of fun in the process.

The yoga sessions are delivered by a roster of highly experienced certified Naam yoga teachers. The sessions take place in various locations, sometimes in a yoga studio other times directly on the beach. The location will be worked out locally each week and you will be in direct contact with the yoga teachers to arrange sessions.

Do not worry if you have never experienced any yoga before, this is open to complete beginners and of course yoga practitioners are also welcome.

Personal assistance

It’s not just the supportive environment during the Cross fit sessions, we have a representative based in Playa del Carmen who will give you full introduction and make sure you are okay. She also runs the yoga sessions and is a fully qualified and experienced Nam Yoga teacher and lifestyle coach.

It’s a fitness holiday not punishment.

On the Xtreme Mexico fitness Boot Camp, yes the goal is to get fit but it is also about experiencing the best Mexico has too offer. You are close to the beach with a whole host of watersports available to you, from free diving, kite surfing to learning to dive. You can easily add on plenty of activities to your itinerary, many of which complement your fitness program rather well.

During the fitness holiday there are extra activities worked into the itinerary, like Cenote freediving and an adventure day to Tulum.

Cleansing Mayan Temascal sweat bath.

It may come as a surprise to you that the Mayans were one of the first recorded people to invent the Sauna. Specially constructed houses – caled Temascals –  in the jungle were created to make steam baths. It still practised today and during the Mexico fitness Boot Camp you will go to one. This is in the middle of the jungle, where it’s already pretty hot so be prepared to sweat. Keep hydrated and you will find it incredibly cleansing. When you are finished you will jump in the crystal clear cool water of a Cenote.

You enter the sweat bath and then shaman starts to bring in sacred hot rocks. The Shamen will explain how the rocks will cleans your body. The Temascal is divided into 4 chambers and as each one opens up you get progressivley hotter. This is great for detox cleansing but it is also quite a spiritual and interesting experience as well.

This is included one time per trip.

Budget Shared

The Mexico fitness Boot Camp budget option uses shared accommodation 1 min walk from the training centre. Currently there are no private options available, if this is important to you consider the Thailand Fitness Bootcamp. The Mexico fitness Boot Camp however, is unique in that it is located right by the beach, and there is plenty going on when you’re not training.

You will be staying in the new Xtreme Gap Year hostel, in an eight bedroom dorm. You have access to 2 protein shakes per day at the hostel and you will be given vouchers for these.

Luxury Resort

2 minutes walk from the beach you have the luxury accommodation. Next to the gym you have a chic downtown hotel will roof top pool. Breakfast is included with this option.

Most people start the Zero to Hero course, This takes you through all of the PADI diving certification is up to dive master. We also include an exclusive Marine conservation module, which will give you a greater understanding of marine ecosystems and improve your CV should you wish to apply for divemaster jobs.

Why do your divemaster course in Playa del Carmen?

There are many reasons to do your divemaster internship in Playa del Carmen. The location is extremely easy to get to, and highly rewarding once you are there. Underwater you are in for a treat, crystal clear turquoise water, with incredible marine life. This is one of the worlds top locations to see whale sharks, at certain times of year you have huge bull shark populations as well (Nov – March).

Year round the water is warm and the visibility is great.

When you are not in the water there is plenty to do, incredible white sandy beaches famed for being some of the best in the world, cool beach bars and warm Mexican hospitality.

There’s usually something going on in Playa del Carmen, not that you have to go out every night if you don’t want to. The hostel is the perfect sanctuary for those wishing to escape the madness, although no doubt you will want party a fair amount as this is a great reason to choose this location.

You don’t have to be a party animal though. Beach lovers will be completely at home here, some of the best beaches in Mexico are at your disposal. After all this is the Caribbean!

Diving in Playa del Carmen

A great reason to do your divemaster in Mexico, and go diving in Playa del Carmen in particular is because of the quality of the dive sites. In general the reefs are very healthy, and there’s a lot of biodiversity underwater. In general the visibility is very good, sometimes when there is a storm this might stir things up a bit, but when you compare it to places like Thailand the actual quality of diving is much more superior in our opinion.

This is a major breeding grounds the turtles, and you can see this when diving. Huge loggerhead turtles and green turtle populations always make dives interesting. But one of the most fun things about diving in Playa del Carmen, is the drift diving.

Because there is a significant current runs along the peninsular with the tides, in general you will drop in at one insertion point and not have to fin for the entire duration of the dive, you can just drift along the reefs checking things out. It’s a fantastic experience. There are large walls the go down past the 30 m mark, so you can plan your dive profile accordingly.

You will see plenty of tropical fish, Nudibranches, box fish, parrotfish Moray Eels. In season the bull sharks come, very few things can give you an Xtreme buzz when diving like a bull shark.

Diving the Cenotes

This part of Mexico used to be all underwater. As the sea level changed and the peninsular rose out of the water it left behind plenty of caverns caves and underground rivers known as Centotes. Officially there are over 10,000 registered but new ones being discovered all the time. This is because mainly they are based in the jungle, and the miles and miles you have impenetrable rainforest jungle surrounding the highway that connects can cocoon, to Playa del Carmen and further south to Tulum.

The Cenotes are amazing to dive. They are freshwater, with amazing light. Deep blue colours, and an almost eerie atmosphere will give you an incredible experience.

You will get the opportunity to dive a Cenote or many of them during the divemaster course although this is an optional upgrade as cave diving is not for everyone.

You would also be able to do some specialist courses, again as an optional upgrade the PADI Bull Shark specialty course and the Cenote Specialty course as well.

Equipment

One thing that sets the dive school apart from many others is the impressive quality of the equipment. All of which is included in the course although we do recommend you bring your own dive computer.

In general we use Cressi gear with brand-new wetsuits and 2014. Regulators and BCDS are well maintained and replaced regularly. We also the only dive shop in Playa del Carmen to have an extensive stock of re-breathers we have six of them costing around €8000 each.

The Xtreme Dive Team

On Mexico divemaster you will join the Xtreme dive team and become part of the family. Staff roster is impressive with highly qualified dive instructors from all over the world. From France, Denmark Mexico the USA and UK. As part of the divemaster internship you will be mentored by one instructor but received input from the entire team. You will learn about the successful running of the dive school, and help out while diving every day working towards your dive master qualification.

The conservation module

The official PADI rules state you cannot start your divemaster internship until you have reached 40 dives. But if you are going from Zero to Hero this leaves some overlap between completing your rescue to being at 40. While many divemaster internship will not allow you to jump straight onto your divemaster without first purchasing the extra dives, we do things a little bit differently. Immediately after finishing your rescue, you will start a conservation section of the Xtreme Gap Year Mexico divemaster course. We strongly believe this helps not only protect the oceans and maintain the reefs. Each one of your training dives you will be tasked with monitoring the colours of the reefs and entering this into a global database. This database overtime gives a picture of the changing health reefs globally. Diving can be quite expensive activity, so funding scientists to do this constantly diverts resources from other worthy Marine conservation projects. By utilising your training dives to record collect and action this data not only do you build up your dive experience, but you can genuinely give something back to the marine environment.

The lifestyle

Doing your divemaster is as much about living the dream lifestyle as it is about learning to dive professionally. We select our divemaster training locations selectively based on some key criteria. Certainly the diving is an important factor, but when you’re out of the water is also important. Playa del Carmen is the perfect location lifestyle wise for your divemaster. Not that you need to be out partying and socialising every night, but you certainly can blow off steam whenever you want. When you are not at the dive school you have an amazing beach with all the associated activities on your doorstep.

It’s a truly international place, where you will meet people from all over the world and have a lot of fun. If you want to spend some time after your divemaster course, to travel Mexico there are plenty of places to visit. Even if you want to take the weekends to do many adventures, you have some of the worlds best diving in Cozumel just a $13 half an hour boat ride away.

There is the paradise backpacker heaven of Tulum. When you want to get out of the city this is the perfect escape.

Hostel Option

On the divemaster internship in Mexico you Stay in an awesome hostel located very close to the beach. Staying in the heart of the action 3 minutes walk from the diveschool everything is on your doorstep. The Bendito Rancho Is a place of complete sanctuary amdist the craziness of Playa del Carmen.

Completely renovated in 2014 this is one of the newest, flashpacker hostels in Mexico. Breakfasts are included and there is a free Wi-Fi service, along with a lot of other added extras.

Xtreme Gap Year has a stake in the hostel, and it is where all of our other travellers and gap year programme takers stay during their Mexico trip. So you are guaranteed to meet loads of people and have lots of fun when you are not diving.

The hostel has a total of 36 beds so provides a nice intimate atmosphere which really helps you get to know the other guests.

Private Studio Option

Those opting for the studio option you sta 4 blocks from the beach in a studio apartment. There is free wifi, cable, aircon (you need to pay for the electricity) kitchenette and BBQ area. Availability is very limited on this option so book well ahead please.

Day 1: Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Early arrivals will need to tear themselves from the beach before getting together with fellow travellers at today’s late afternoon welcome meeting. Aside from the sand there’s loads of stuff to do in Playa with snorkelling, bike hire and the water park always proving popular.

Day 2-3: Tulum, Mexico

Take a scenic local bus trip south to the gorgeous beaches and warm waves of Tulum. White sand, cocktails and palm trees have never looked so sweet and if you’d like the opportunity to get your first taste of Mayan ruins then Tulum is the best place to start. Renting a mask and snorkel is a great idea and also allows you to find more space in your rucksack as opposed to lugging around your dive gear. One of the best spots for snorkelling is to visit the ruins of Tulum where you can actually swim around some of the ancient walls that have made their way into the sea.

Day 4-5: Caye Caulker, Belize
Say “adios” Mexico and “what’s up?”‘ Belize as you journey across the border on what promises to be a real culture jolt to remember. Once into Central America you’ll be whisked over to the Caribbean island of Caye Caulker where you’ll be able to swim, snorkel and surf amongst some of the most incredible marine reserves on the continent. This is pretty much where things go all Captain Jack Sparrow as from grilled shrimp to rum with everything, keep your eyes peeled for the Jolly Roger flag and you won’t go far wrong. If you really have had enough of land-lubbing and fancy a trip out to sea then there are plenty of options to sail, kayak and snorkel out on the ocean wave. Just make sure you’re home before the ship sets sail.

Day 6-7: San Ignacio, Belize

After bidding the manatees and coral reefs a fond farewell it’s time to travel in-land as you encounter the forest-covered highlands that sit beyond Belize’s capital city, Belmopan. Get ready for rushing rivers, tumbling waterfalls and ancient ruins, with a chance to visit the ceremonial temples of Xunantunich and the incredible caves of Tunichil Muknal. This is a true outdoor adventure playground and for many will prove to be one of the active highlights of the whole tour. Tubing, caving and canoeing are all excellent optional activities for the energetic and the chance to try something new whilst in Belize is going to stay with you for years to come.

If you’re not that into the extreme side of life then don’t panic – there are plenty of more laid-back alternatives with bike hire, butterfly gardens and trips to nearby ruins always proving excellent for learning more about the area.

Day 8-9: Flores & Tikal, Guatemala

Step back in time amongst the farming communities of Flores where you’re just as likely to see locals drifting past in a hollowed-out canoe as walking to work across the cobbled streets. The following day is free however, there’s no better way to spend it than opting to visit the awesome Tikal temples – don’t miss this one! The Tikal temples are pretty much as ‘magnificent Mayan’ as you’re going to get and although the pilgrimage does involve a climb through the jungle the views from the top of the ruins are nothing short of jaw-dropping.

Day 10-11: Rio Dulce, Guatemala

Next stop is one of the absolute legends of the Central American circuit – the awesome Rio Dulce. This has long been a draw for boaters and if you’re looking for things to do on your free day then why not take a tour of Lake Izabel or explore up river in search of manatees and hot springs.If you’d prefer to keep your feet on dry land then there are loads of other choices to do just that. Although the horse trek past the rubber plantation isn’t essentially you keeping your feet on the ground. With other options including nature reserves and the San Felipe fort at Livingstone, you’re bound to find the right pace to suit your mood and whatever you’re into you’re sure to come away happy, experienced and hungry for more.

Take the rural bus to Antigua for a taste of delicious local street food before settling down for the night in preparation for tomorrow’s meeting with your host family and your stay in a traditional Guatemalan home.

Day 13: Chichicastenango & San Jorge La Laguna, Guatemala

Pick up a gift for your host family at the handicraft stalls of Chichicastenango before heading to San Jorge La Laguna and a real opportunity to practise your Spanish and learn more about the customs and lifestyles of Guatemala. Although living conditions can be pretty basic this is a genuine chance to see what life is like for local people and through a combination of hands, feet and phrase books you’ll be surprised what you can learn during just a short period of time.

Say a fond farewell to your new-found friends as today it’s time to make the most of Guatemala’s natural beauty as you swim, surf, hike or kayak within a stunning volcanic backdrop.

Day 17-18: Copan, Honduras

Travel through the wild, dry country of eastern Guatemala as you head to Copan in Honduras. Discover more about the mysterious Mayans with the chance to explore the ancient temples, pyramids and statues of Copan that are famed throughout the land. After a day of travelling there’s no better way to relax and feel refreshed other than a dip in the Copan natural springs. Of course, after you’ve revived your senses then more adventure awaits and optional tours to the Copan ruins and the Macaw Mountain Reserve both provide an excellent means of finding out more about this fascinating area.

Day 19-21: Roatan Island, Honduras

Now to head to the island paradise of Roatan Island and to soak up the laid back vibe., Here you can snorkel, dive, swim and jump into the gorgeous warm waters of the Caribbean or simply chill out on the white sands before cooling off with a cheeky beer in the evening as you get to sample the local night life. Day 22: Comayagua, Honduras

Return to the mainland by ferry and local bus and head for the beautiful colonial architecture of Comayagua in Honduras. If you’re into your colonial architecture then you’ll be spoiled for choice in Comayagua as there are some superb examples of Spanish influence as well as the oldest clock this side of the Atlantic.

Day 23-24: Granada, Nicaragua

Travel across the border into Nicaragua, where you’ll make your way to the ancient colonial city of Granada. Cobbled streets, bustling markets await you with plenty of opportunities to explore the incredible surrounding area of volcanoes and lakes either on foot or by boat. Hiking up the side of a volcano is an incredible experience no matter where you are and if you dare to take on this optional activity then prepare for a trek to remember. Of course, if you prefer to explore at a more leisurely pace then you’ll be pleased to hear that you can hire bikes and kayaks without too much bother and the chances to check out Lake Nicaragua by boat is a truly sublime experience.

Day 25-26: Ometepe Island, Nicaragua

Next stop is the agricultural island of Ometepe which sits in the largest lake in Central America – Lake Nicaragua. This is simply a breath-taking experience and will bring you closer to the wildlife, the people and the volcanic landscapes of this remarkable country. If you can’t get enough of that volcanic stuff then there are more optional hikes available up the side of both Maderas and Concepcion however, after all that huffing and puffing a trip to the Ojo de Agua hot springs has got to be just what the doctored ordered.

Day 27-28: Monteverde, Costa Rica

Wave farewell to the monkeys and beaches of Ometepe Island as you continue your travels south to the lush green cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica. This is the home of hundreds of species of plants, birds and mammals which means that however you choose to explore, by foot, bike, horse or zip-line, you’ll be in for a really wild time. There are so many additional ways to enjoy the gorgeous landscapes of Monteverde and from cloud forest walks to night time nature rambles, this is an exciting and captivating area of Costa Rica. Coffee and chocolates or butterflies and insects – you name it and you’ll have the opportunity to find out more over this exciting 2 day stop-over.

Day 29-30: La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano National Park, Costa Rica

This is pretty much an adventure play-ground for big kids and if you’re interested in learning how to paddle board or maybe even canyoneering then where better to give it a go than here?

Do you know the way to San Jose – you most certainly do! Take your time to relax and explore amongst the artisan markets and cultural museums of Costa Rica’s capital city. Gold, handicrafts and seafood are all on offer.

Day 33-35: Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica

Today is where your adventures start to really hot up as you travel overland by local bus to the coastal town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. Over the next couple of days you’ll be able to learn to surf, explore the area by bike and get up close and personal to the local animals of Cahuita National Park. Aside from the sloths, monkeys and raccoons at Cahuita NP, animal lovers will no doubt jump at the chance to visit the jaguar rescue centre to find out more about this intrinsically beautiful yet deadly natural born predator. Further animal action can be had at the Kekoldi Iguana Reserve which pretty much does exactly as it says on the tin so any lizard lovers out there – you know where to head for. As with many of the projects that you’ll encounter, the chance to volunteer and help out is always an option for another trip and if you’re hoping to find out more then check with your guide or ask in resort as it’s never too late to make good things happen.

Day 36-38: Isla Bastimentos, Panama

Next stop are the legendary limits of Panama and once you’ve crossed the border you’ll be free to explore an incredible array of white sand and lush green islands that have got exotic paradise stamped all over them. This is where your tour really starts to kick in and the chance to rest and relax amongst such an exceptional environment will no doubt bring home what an absolute pleasure it is to be alive. Touring the islands of Bocas del Toro and Bastimentos will bring you into contact with some incredible white sand beaches and picture postcard tropical views and the chance to see a red poison dart frog in its natural environment is an absolute treat.

Day 39-40: Boquete, Panama

You maybe departing one tropical screen-saver but don’t despair as you’re heading for another where hot springs, volcano treks and some darn fine coffee are all ready and waiting to make your acquaintance. Boquete is pretty much regarded as one of the finest spots for lovers of nature anywhere on the planet and if haven’t already fallen head-over-heels with Central America then you certainly will do now.

Day 41-42: Santa Catalina, Panama

Head out to the Pacific coastline as you use local transport to take you to some of the most remote and undeveloped locations on the Central American trail. This is where those surf lessons in Puerto Viejo come in handy but if you just fancy kicking back and relaxing or visiting beautiful Coiba National Park then you’ve still got plenty of time left to do so. Although you’re nearing the end of the tour there are still plenty of optional activities to try and even if you haven’t learned to surf yet, don’t worry, Santa Catalina’s an ideal spot to get your water wings.

Day 43-44: Panama City, Panama

Your final couple of days will be spent amongst the world-famous sites of Panama City and from the UNESCO World Heritage old quarter of Casco Viejo to the thoroughly modern lanes and locks of the Panama Canal, this is your chance to really absorb every last drop of Central American culture. Tobaga Island, Soberania National Park and Isla Barro Colorado can all be visited on your penultimate day however, if you just want to write your postcards as you sup yet another cup of local coffee then who could blame you?

Week 1: Settle in & Spanish

Sunday Arrival Day

We will have morning and afternoon airport pick ups. From Cancun airport its only a short 35 minute ride to our awesome hostel in Playa Del Carmen. You have some time to settle in and sip on a Corona, or enjoy a home brewed coffee while you get to know the others. In the evening we include a Mexican welcome dinner and our guide will tell you all about your trip and answer all questions you might have. After we take you for a shorts stroll around town, so you know where you are and what is where! The perfect start!  You will have access to a predeparture buddy list so you can already chat to people on your trip prior to leaving but this will be the first time you meet them in person.

Don´t be a gringo. Speak the lingo.

Monday morning: Start Spanish Lessons

Monday morning you will be taken to a gorgeous Spanish school. It is an open air set up with lots of fun activities thrown in so you will not feel like you are at a “school”. In reality it is a great way to learn basic Spanish and do some cool activities. We have plenty planned for the week. Like Mexican cooking, day trips and salsa classes.

The lessons run in the morning, finishing at  1 pm, so you have plenty of time to hit the beach and explore with your new buddies.

There will be plenty of free time to explore or hang out at the beach during the week but you will also get involved in lots of different social activities in the afternoons and evening. This way you will get to know lots of people in Playa del Carmen, not just the people in the Xtreme Mexico Gap Year group. People from all over the world enrolled in the language school. It’s a really social environment and you will make friends very quickly.

You will have Saturday and Sunday as free days to enjoy as you want. Need ideas, there are lots of extra activities you can book to upgrade your Mexico trip. Like scuba diving, stand up paddling, cultural experiences, whale shark snorkeling trips… you name it!

Week 2: Mayan Culture & Party Time

Nowhere else in the world boasts such a great mix of ancient civilisations and modern day playtime. On the second week you will have both.

Okay the first thing we should mention in this itinerary is that it can change depending on the season and the time you go. We substitute different activities during different months to get the most out of your time in Playa del Carmen. For example: The whale sharks are only around from 15 May to 15 September. When they are in town you definitely want to see them so we make sure it is included in your itinerary. No matter what, with us you know you’re going to have an incredible adventure with a group of like-minded travellers all up for having the best time of their lives.

Monday – Good morning with water sports

Monday mornings… Most people hate them, but you won’t as you will be starting off  by greeting the sunrise with a stand-up paddle adventure. The beach is only 5 min walk from the hostel, and even if you have never tried stand-up paddle before it’s great fun to get out on the water experience a true Mexican sunrise. If the wind is in you can have a go on our kite surf trainer kite, to see if you have the feel for what it takes to become a kite surfer. It may be an early start (6 am!) but it is worth it, and breakfast will be waiting queue back in the hostel.

Beach Club visit! Later that day we will take you to a stunning beach club. What else can you wish for Chillaxing and zipping cocktails in the Caribbean! The Parrot beach club is legendary, and gives you access to one of the most stunning beaches of Playa!

Tuesday – Chitcen Itza

Yes! Its time to Explore the Mayan Ruins. The most famous Mayan ruins and global heritage site. Famed for its human sacrificial ceremonies, this day trip will blow your mind! Built to awe, the pyramid known as El Castillo has become the towering icon of Chichén Itzá.

Wednesday – Whale sharks Or Mayan Xtreme!

Whale Sharks
From 15 May to 15 September Mexico is one of the best places in the world to see whale sharks. The can be up to 150 of them feeding and breeding off the peninsular. An early start we will transfer you in an air-conditioned van to the waiting fast boat. High horsepower engines will blast you through the aqua marine waters in search of whale sharks. When we find them you will be guided by our trained whale shark Marine guides. The experience of actually swimming with these incredible creatures, which can reach up to 18 feet is virtually impossible to describe. It’s just amazing.

Mayan Xtreme!
Between 16 September and 14 May we have the Mayan Xtreme Adventure for you in place called Sian Kaan. This epic day will have you speed boating, jungle trekking and drifting in crystal clear Mangroves.

Thursday – Xtreme Mexico Adventure Day. Cenotes, Ziplines, Jungle and Culture

Unique to this part of the world of a huge number of Cenotes. These are huge cave formations and underground rivers that are accessible via sinkholes. They are quite spectacular, and new ones are being discovered all the time. Don’t forget Playa del Carmen surrounded by complete jungle, it really is an adventure seekers playground. On Thursday we will take you to the Cenotes where you can swim and explore this unbelievable environment.

Xtreme Mexico Adventure Day

• An awesome full day Mexico Adventure. Including lots of nature, culture and amazing activities like snorkeling, spotting wildlife and ziplining!
• Snorkel in a Blue Cenote (Cenote Azul) which is a natural mineral pool in the jungle)! An open cenote right in the jungle with nature and trees all around you.
• Snorkel in an amazing Underground Caves located up to 50 feet below the earth’s surface! Bats and minerals, stalagmites and stalactites. Sac Aktun.
• Snorkel with interesting sea life in Yal-ku natural aquarium lagoon. Because the underground river meets the beautiful Caribbean ocean you might see You may see sting rays, barracudas, parrot fish and a host of other interesting sea creatures.
• The Tanka Park Zip line across the jungle canopy and over a beautiful Cenote. Cliff dive into crystal clear water and make a canoe trip.
• Visit a Mayan Village and interact with the Mayans. Take a walk in to the Mayan village and see how the Mayans still live. Mayans are the indigenous people of Mexico who keep their culture.
• Drive and hike through the Mayan jungle. You may see wild iguanas, spider monkeys, tejones (bit like raccoons).

Friday -  Beach Club & Bar Crawl

The Hidden Paradise Trip

Xtreme Mayan Weekender

The Xtreme mine weekend has you expect is going to be pretty adventurous. Be warned this is not for the fainthearted. It is pure adventure served piping hot and spicy-Mexican style! From Friday to Sunday we have exploring Mayan pyramids of Uxmal. Once it was one of the largest cities in the peninsular and home to about 25,000 Mayans. It flourished around 600 to 900 A.D. It is a grand spectacle everything is built they care. With huge terraces courtyards and so many temples there is loads to explore.

Contrasting nicely with the history and culture of Uxmal we will check out Izamal. This is a classic colonial town in one of the oldest cities in Yucatán.

Then it’s time for some serious adventure, with our Xtreme exploration of the stunning dry cave.

By far the largest cave system in Yucatán Peninsula we will traverse it, you will have to find ways to walk, climb and slide down. Be prepared to bring your Indiana Jones style whip with you he never know when you might need it. In all serious note that you will need to bring long sleeves and trousers for the cave exploration. Walking shoes and suncream is essential.

Finally we’ll go check out another Cenote, the perfect opportunity to take it very refreshing swim in the crystal clear water.

The trip departs Friday at 2 PM and returns on Sunday at 8 PM. Included is transport with a private air-conditioned minivan, entrance fees with guide, two lunches two nights in the 3 star hotel in Merida, two breakfasts and engines and guide for the cave and Cenote.

We offer freedive courses according to the AIDA certification requirements with a professional freedive instructor. Besides the course we will take you diving in amazing underwater caves, beautiful lagoons, sea wrecks and you can choose a special dive, depending on the season: whale sharks, bull sharks (only 3 star), lion fish hunt, scuba dive, Maya ruins or sail fish run. The AIDA ** freediver course is the foundation freediving course covering the necessary skills and knowledge for recreational freediver to safely freedive with or without a guideline.
You will be introduced to four freediving disciplines : static apnea, dynamic apnea, free immersion and constant weight. The course will follow your abilities and it is not a competitive course.
Enjoying is the most important point for us. We will first start in confined water and then explore the beautiful Mexican cenotes while freediving.

To successfully complete the AIDA 2 star freediver course you will have to perform a 2 minute breath hold, swim 40 m underwater with fins and dive to 16m in the open water.

Day 1: We pick you up from the residence and bring you to our home base for a theoretical introduction and some breathing exercises. You will spend some time in a swimming pool where you focus on static apnea and dynamic apnea.

Day 2: This day you will spend in one of the cenotes and we will work on how to freedive in a safe and responsible way. Also you will learn how to be a good ‘buddy’.

Day 3: This day we will also spend in a cenote or a laguna, in which we can practice our skills and finish the requirements if not already done. We will finish the day with a small exam and a late lunch and a beer!

After your 2 star training you will go freediving and exploring various of the magical cenotes with our instructor for 5 days and a beautiful laguna. We also include a unique dive to a ship wreck in front of the coast of the island Cozumel with its famous crystal clear waters.

The AIDA *** freediver course is a course which builds on the skills acquired in the AIDA**course. The aim of the course is to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to independently plan and participate in free diving activities with similarly experienced free dive buddies.
This course is really designed for you to improve your techniques and most of all to understand your sensation. You will learn proper equalization techniques and free falling to depth.

Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a beautiful city that sits on the Caribbean Sea coast of Mexico. It used to be a humble fishing village and the stopover for travelers visiting Cozumel Island. It is blessed with the same stretch of white sandy beaches and azure waters as Cancun, but with less crowd.

Tourists then began to see Playa del Carmen as a good holiday getaway, and so began its rise as a major destination. It is now home to various hotels, restaurants, resorts, and bars and clubs, not to mention many other attractions such as adventure sports facilities and great diving opportunities.

Quinta Avenida is the city’s major street. You can walk it from the beach. It is filled with boutiques, restaurants, and many other interesting establishments. Walking along this street will make you feel the festive atmosphere of the place. You will find streets intersecting with the Quinta and leading to the beach. Here you will find internet cafes, money changers, dive-shops and other specialty stores. Quinta Avenida transforms into a vibrant party venue at night. It is the perfect place to mingle with the locals and fellow tourists.

The picturesque beaches in Playa del Carmen are open to the public. The crystal-like waters have the right temperature for a nice swim. If you prefer a crowded beach, then head for the ones close to the ferry docks. But if you want a serene, private place, then go to either north or south for less crowded and quitter beaches.

Playa del Carmen offers lots of sporting activities at the beach. You can fish, scuba-dive, or snorkel. Do not worry if you forgot to bring your gears since there are many dive shops that rent out equipment. The Details

Our language school was founded in 1997. Their mission is to provide the best quality instruction of Spanish as a Second Language, and to offer students a meaningful and unforgettable cultural experience.
One thing that sets the school apart is the individual attention each student receives to learn Spanish fast. The teachers and professional staff provide around the clock attention, creating a family environment for every student.

On the first day of school you will be taking a small exam to see what your level in Spanish is, so you will be placed in the appropriate class. During the morning there will be a contact session with the director of the school who will give you information about the programme as well as living in Playa del Carmen. Everybody in the school will be part of your everyday life in no time, for teachers and students will participate together in the many activities.

Besides learning Spanish the fun way, outside in a ‘palapa’ instead of a boring classroom, you will be living in a place like no other, with white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue warm waters close by. You will be staying with your new friends in a beautifully set-up residence not far from the school. The Spanish Course

• 20 hours Spanish lessons per week
• Spanish courses are held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and are composed of 3 lessons of practical conversational grammar and 1 lessons of practical conversation and/or lectures.
• This programme consists of classes with an average of 4 students per class with a maximum of 6-8 students in high season.

Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a beautiful city that sits on the Caribbean Sea coast. It used to be a humble fishing village and the stopover for travelers visiting Cozumel Island. It is blessed with the same stretch of white sandy beaches and azure waters as Cancun, but with less crowd.
Tourists then began to see Playa del Carmen as a good holiday getaway, and so began its rise as a major destination. It is now home to various hotels, restaurants, resorts, and bars and clubs, not to mention many other attractions such as adventure sports facilities and great diving opportunities.

Your stay in Mexico will be at Xtreme Gap Year hostel called Bendito Rancho. This is an eco-hostel located two blocks away from one of the best beaches in the whole of the Playa! You will be staying in a shared mini dorm. It has a great atmosphere and we even brew our own coffee there! With the beach a short stroll from your comfortable surroundings you will have the whole of Playa del Carmen at your fingertips.

Meals are not included but food is inexpensive and Mexico budget about $25 per day extra.

Become a Journalist & Travel

On this program you can either undertake the diploma only and use it to boost your qualifications whilst you undertake any of our gap year programs, or you can involve yourself On our Xtreme journalism assignments. Set in 2 locations where you can study and learn more about journalism.

For the assignments, you can choose either Thailand, or Mexico and you have four weeks to complete the course and we throw in some adventure activities along the way. What they are depends on the time of year, we do not keep it set so we can react to any newsworthy stories or events.

The course involves quite a bit of coursework, so where better to undertake some investigative journalism, or get inspired than abroad by paradise beaches.

You have full backup and support of our UK-based tutors, who have considerable experience in the industry. You can actually study anywhere as long as you have an Internet connection and a laptop.

Once you have completed the course and have written your final piece we will assist you in sending this out to our media houses who may or may not pick up on the story. If you do get published you will receive 60 percent of your royalty fees which could be enough to cover the cost of the entire course.

What you report on is up to you, but you will have the full back up and support and guidance of professional journalists (including the head mentor on the programme – Beci Wood with 10 years experience on staff at the UK´s biggest newspaper).

Not only is journalism and exciting career, it’s something you can take with you to your next stage after travelling, whether that be a part-time job at University, or something you do on the side or launch phone into as a career.

ACCOMMODATION

In Mexico you will stay in Playa del Carmen, a short walk from the beach at our base the Bendito Rancho. This is based on a dormitory (shared accommodation).

In Thailand you will stay in Phuket where you will also be involved in a work experience module with think media. You will stay on a bungalow either your own or shared with one other person the same sex.  The bungalow is located close to the officers.
