It’s not just the epic surf that makes Bali such popular surfing destination, a quick browse of this website will reveal there are plenty of amazing surf spots all over the world, but what makes Bali so special is the fact that it is such a beautiful place with a unique culture and it is truly a welcoming environment.
Bali is one of the only islands in Indonesia that is not predominantly Islam. Considering Indonesia is the most populous Islamic country in the world, the Hindu culture of Bali had to be pretty strong to withstand the outside influences, and you can see this all over the island with the intricate Hindu temples, hidden away in the jungles, perched on rocky islands by the coast and pretty much all over the island.
The people are incredibly welcoming, and surfing is as much a part of the culture now as is placing offerings to the spirits. Typically this could involve, bananas, flowers incense, rice and even the odd cheeky cigarette (definitely some surf dude culture shining through there). Offerings are placed everywhere, some days are devoted to different things, so one day offerings are placed on motorbikes, cars, doorsteps, toilet seats you name it they will bless it.
This keeps the spirits happy, keeps the stray animals happy to and who knows keeps the surf swelling off the coastline, making Bali the perfect destination for a surf trip.
Bali is known for many things, but our favourite has to be the Surf.
[box type=”info”]Bali´s swell is the stuff of legend, so with our surfing in Bali program you can experience life as a surf dude or dudette! When we hit Bali on an Xtreme Research Trip, we were not disappointed! While our surf skills are not up to tackling the most famous (and difficult spot) or Uluawatu, we were right at home in Changgu, which is becoming a legendary surf spot amongst those in the know.[/box]
