Riding the waves

2-11-2010

Early start on the 1st of November after a great time at the bar the night before. At 6 we got picked up by the surf bus, a big green and black tour bus with all the luxury you need and a great fun driver/surfer. Ant brought us and 24 other cool people to the best beach I have ever seen in Australia!

After an hour and a half we stopped of for breakfast, Mc Breakfast, and then we watched 2 cool movies in the bus, we got the change to by some drinks and snacks as the surf camp is so remote there are no shops. The drive took 6 hours but because the bus was comfy, we got to know each other a bit more and we started so early it was fine. The same after noon we had surf lessons, and believe me… That wakes you up.

Before getting in the water we had this absolute chilled surf dude tell us about all the do’s and do not’s, in the water and at the campus. It was fun, not boring and interactive.
We all got a wet suit, which were all new, got shown to our accommodation and then we took a 2 minute walk to the beach. This was the best uncrowded beach in Oz I have ever seen! The only thing was that the sun was not out! But hey, we had a wet suit and it is freaking hard work learning to surf so we were not cold for a second.

In the evening there was the best food ever! Everyone was quit, and that is a good sign when it comes to eating your meal, it was real good. These 3 cute surf boys make the meals and it is super healthy and fresh! So we chatted the night away and had a few drinks hoping for better weather the next day.

I went to bed by 9 pm, sooo tired, and we had to get up at 7.30 and what a treat, clear blue sky!

Nice breakfast, getting your wetsuit and at 8 we were at the beach. Great waves, good spirits and lots of sun. factor 30 to 50 is available for free, and you need it! This day everyone was able to stand up and ride a wave! Some went out a bit further to the bigger waves, but most were total beginners. It was a great morning, after lunch (so hungry again) we went out for 2 more hours. And then we chilled, played guitar and chatted, relaxing in hammocks, nice!

All kinds of people join the surf trips for all different kind of reasons, but mostly to have a great time and get to know other travelers. From 24 people there are just 2 girls who started out travelling together, the rest met at the bus on November first, and now just 2 days later I have the feeling we are kind of friends. Encouraging each other to catch a good wave surfing, having a beer and a laugh together. And that people is what travelling is all about!

Tomorrow morning is our last morning to surf here, we leave in the afternoon to Spot X, where there will be more people and more of a party scene. Looking forward to see how it is, although I would love to chill out a few days more here.
