Abu-Dhabi Adventure Travel Race 2010, and what to expect in 2011

Abu-Dhabi Adventure Travel Race 2010, and what to expect in 2011

Yet again, the Abu-Dhabi adventure travel race was a huge success in 2010, pitting 50 teams of extreme athletes against one another. In groups of four, the teams attack the six day challenge which takes place in the extreme terrain of Abu-Dhabi, pushing everyone to their limits. A stage based adventure race, there are a number of challenges to face in Abu-Dhabi in addition to the strenuous rigours of kayaking, mountain biking, and running and other activities included in the adventure travel race. Vast dunes, extreme heat, and towering mountains are just some of the hurdles facing competitors, and for those who love adventure races, the fourth incarnation of this race was one well worth participating in.

From the outset the marvelled Kiwi team with defending champions Marcel Hagener, Nathan Fa’avae, and Elina and Richard Ussher were ahead as usual. An extensive course including 58 miles of mountain biking and a 75 mile trek through uniform sand dunes in the pitch dark of night are just two stages of this epic race. Navigation and orienteering are vital for any teams success, and with rope courses thrown in as additional challenges to other strenuous exercise, keeping a clear mind whilst under extreme fatigue is one of the adventures most attractive challenges. Meanwhile, with the latter stage including over 80 miles of sea kayaking through the Arabian Gulf, one of the races challenges is not to become overcome by the distance of the finish line which can seem a dauntingly long way away.

For those taking part, the $40,000 price money isn’t really the ultimate goal, with members simply wanting to cross the finish line ahead of competitors. Having won all previous years the Kiwi members were the team to beat in 2010, but it seems that they were just too much for their competitors. For the first time ever the foursome completed every stage ahead of their rivals, who included the Great British Adidas Terrex team, and France’s Thule Adventure Team, to win the race in just 45 hours, 44 minutes and 47 seconds. France was not far behind, crossing the finish line after 47 hours, 8 minutes and 8 seconds, whilst the Swiss Wenger team were close on their heels at 47 hours, 39 minutes and 1 second. Meanwhile, Great Britain came in fourth at 48 hours, 25 minutes and 15 seconds.

A vastly popular activity, the 2011 adventure travel year is looking to be packed with a plethora of races to enjoy. With the success of the Abu-Dhabi Adventure Travel Race 2010 it is expected that the event will return for its fifth year in 2011, no doubt with the Kiwi team once again back to defend their championship title. Offering incredible landscapes and extreme conditions to survive, the United Arab Emirate state is perfect for the one of the most challenging races of the year. And being a large international travel hub, jetting off on flights to Dubai is the perfect way to unwind after the stresses and strains off this thrilling race.
