There is something very exciting about doing a divemaster course.

There are plenty of Divemaster courses available to you all over the world. The difficult decision is choosing where to go and spend your days learning how to dive and become a professional diver. People choose to do a Divemaster course for various reasons, some want to go professional and this is a stepping stone to getting their scuba-diving instructor course qualification but for most who choose to do the Divemaster course through us this is purely about having some me time.

Have Some “Me” Time!

divemaster thailand koh taoWhen you consider that the majority of your days are spent diving in the ocean, in some of the most incredible tropical locations in the world, and it is hard to go back to the real life and real world of working.

Doing a Divemaster qualification is as much about having fun and meeting new friends and having the time of your life as it is about learning the tricks of the trade to become a PADI dive professional. The divemaster courses available through Xtreme Gap Year range from doing your Divemaster in Thailand, to getting the SSI equivalent called the dive control specialist in Indonesia, to doing your Divemaster course in the Philippines (where you can dive Thresher sharks).

We have really cool courses in Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica if you want to get your Divemaster qualification in the Caribbean, but some choose to go to Australia to get the Divemaster so they are just a short hop away from the Great Barrier Reef one of the worlds best places to go diving. The most popular place to do your Divemaster is in Koh Tao in Thailand, we have an exceptionally good Divemaster course available there for 12 weeks (most of eight weeks maximum) which means you can dive every day and improve your diving skills on one of the best value Divemaster courses available.

Reasons for doing a divemaster programme.

Koh Tao Divemaster course SSiSurprisingly diving is not the main reason for most people wanting to undertake divemaster courses. The majority of ex-customers asked who trained with us, stated an interest in diving but many had never done any form of scuba diving previously. The main reason people like to complete divemaster courses is the social aspect coupled with the fact it gives you something constructive and fun to spend your time doing during your travels.

Think about it, you can spend three months sitting on a beach getting a tan and blowing through your budget, we can do this with a sense of purpose, allowing you to do an activity that enables you to meet people, dive with whale sharks learn new things and just feel great.

This can mean the difference between spending a lot of money moving around just travelling or backpacking… or spending time in one location, staying put and making deeper friendships as you get immersed in the local community.

Imagine living on a tropical island, where your sole reason to be is to go diving every morning and afternoon. You will be in a team of other training dive Masters, and everyone is in the same boat having fun and learning something exciting in the tropics. When you’re having such a good time, it’s very hard not to make friends with people, who will most likely be from all over the world. It’s an incredibly social experience.

But it’s not all having a laugh, there are some very serious aspects to doing a divemaster course in that you are learning to lead dives and with that comes responsibility. Whilst this does develop your people skills and leadership skills (two very strong qualities to show on your curriculum vitae) it also adds a bit of gravitas and importance to what you are trying to undertake. It’s a great feeling to know that not only are you spending time in an amazing place, but you’re actually developing your own skill set in a fun way.

Doing a divemaster course is your first route into the world of work in the diving industry. It means you can lead dives or divers around dive sites and work for a dive school. What it does not mean is that you can teach this is the next qualification up the ladder, but it is essential to do your divemaster course if you are planning on becoming a scuba diving instructor. With that in mind, some do the divemaster course with a view to gaining the professional level qualifications. The vast majority of people, however, do not do this for professional reasons. It’s all about improving their skills, and of course, their love of diving as many divemaster internships offer unlimited diving during the course of the internship or allows you to get your dive experience up significantly.

If you are interested in knowing which divemaster course offer unlimited dives, please contact us as some will give you a lot more dive experience than others. That there are many different benefits to doing a divemaster course in different locations, we know what they are so we are able to recommend the best option for you.

What does a divemaster course involve?

The dive master courses involve both practical experience and theoretical study in order to deepen your knowledge about diving, safety, leadership navigation and even the basics of working in a dive shop. Whilst the main benefit is actually the diving in the experience, this does teach you a lot so it’s quite a bit of information to take in. Typically you will have a dive instructor assigned to you will run you through all of the course materials, these are made up of modular tests which you study throughout the course.

Where are the best divemaster course training locations?

Shark Divemaster Philippines (53)The answer to this one very much depends on what you are looking to get out of it. Whilst the actual answer is different for everyone, we are able to give you an indication as to where might be the best place to train if we know what is important to you.

Places like Koh Tao in Thailand or Utila in Honduras are known as party islands perfect for the dive bums who want a great social experience during their course. It goes without saying that Koh Tao has great nightlife, so it’s actually the perfect combination because you can dive all day doing something constructive healthy and wonderful, yet have exciting nights meeting new people in beach bars and partying the night away. It’s widely known that diving is a great hangover cure, although we should say certainly do not go diving if you are still drunk from the night before!

What kind of equipment will you need to become a divemaster?

If you are planning on working then you will need your own dive gear, often the shops that you work for will supply you with this but it is always advisable to have your own gear once you are actually working. As you are training it’s a different matter, often you can be lent a BCD (buoyancy control device) although without question you will need your own face mask, fins and wetsuit. It is also advisable to have your own regulator set, mainly for hygiene reasons and it’s also nice to have your own gear, and you will certainly need a dive computer as well. The cost of dive computers do vary, and you can find out more information on the Xtreme Gap Year blog about how to go about buying a dive computer.

You will also need a surface marker buoy, or safety sausage as it is sometimes known, this is a plastic inflatable device that floats on the surface below you to warn boats but there are divers below.

The equipment can set you back as much as £1000 if you get your full set up, so it is often best to just use the rental gear provided with dive master courses until you are certain that being a divemaster is for you before splashing out on the gear.

PADI VS SSI Divemaster Programs

You will get your diving qualification through an international diving agency. The main ones are PADI and SSI. Whilst both offer a similar level of qualifications, courses do vary slightly yet the outcome is still the same. A qualification that is accepted in all accredited resorts enabling you to work in the industry.

PADI divemasters can work for an SSI accredited dive shop and vice versa. Opinions vary as to which is better, whilst PADI is more established, very good things have been said about SSI and the general consensus amongst the team at Xtreme Gap Year is that SSI is more thorough but we would not recommend one over the other is essentially the outcome is the same.
