Mexico Divemaster Diving Course (11)It is a pretty good life style you have as  a  Scuba Instructor  and it is very rewarding too! You help people overcome their fear and make them feel really proud. Imagine having happy students around you every day. Of course the view from the office is pretty tough, usually the worlds best beach resorts, yes it is a tough life, but someone has to do it.

Why The  Mexico IDC Scuba Dive Instructor Course?

One of the top reasons is the location itself. The diving in Mexico is fantastic. Crystal clear waters, fresh water Cenotes and the cool environment of Playa del Carmen is a great reason to study here.

Once you are qualified it is a great place to look for work whether that be in the multiple resorts along the Yucatán Peninsula or even hopping over to other countries in the Caribbean, like Costa Rica Belize Honduras you name it.  You can hop on a short low-cost flight to your first available job opportunity.

Our partners run the only PADI CDC facility in Mexico, we believe it is one of the top rated IDC centres in the region and one of the best in the world. We cherry pick only the best course directors, and facilities to run our IDC’s (which is why you will only find a limited number on the entire Xtreme Gap Year website).

Mexico Diving Dive Instructor IDC (3)Xtreme’s high standards come about through the experience of our staff many of whom have completed IDC’s and have worked as dive instructors for a combined total of over 20 years. Simply put we know what makes a good IDC, and we know what makes a good location. Our priority is to deliver excellent training in a fun environment that will set you up in your SCUBA dive career with as little hassle as possible.

On the Mexico IDC not only will you get first-class education, you will also get a lot of support after you have been successful in your exams. Our aim is to help place you in jobs and give you the support you need.

The IDC is fully comprehensive and gives you much more.

PADI recommends a seven day IDC course prior to doing your SCUBA dive instructor examination. So we do a 14 day course – double the recommended  to provide ample experience in time necessary to cover you in all of your modules. This includes a two-day EFR instructor module so you know you are going to be very proficient during your IE examination.

Guaranteed Success Or Your Retakes Are On Us.

We are highly established in the region and have a great employment network after the course.

How do you become a    Scuba Instructor? Complete Your  Mexico IDC

If you are a complete novice in diving it will take you 7 months to train up to become a dive instructor, but is a pretty awesome 7 months. If however you have not had pre-dive experience please to think long and hard about this (see below).

Becoming A SCUBA Dive Instructor – Before you start

Mexico Divemaster Diving Course (12)There are usually two types of people that think about becoming a SCUBA dive instructor. Those who already have an existing dive qualification, and others who are toying with the idea because they like the idea of a career change.

If you do not already have an existing dive qualification (open water) then it is best that you contact us first to discuss your options. It is a huge commitment becoming a SCUBA dive instructor financially, as the IDC pre-required courses do not come cheap -and that’s just the courses you also have to factor in living costs prior to starting.

There are a whole host of things that you should consider prior to starting and we are able to talk you through your options from the point of view of experience. Many of our staff hold scuba-diving instructor qualifications and have completed their IDC’s. So if you want a genuine insight into what it is like to be a diving instructor and what is required to pass exams then get in touch on e-mail.

Doing Your Mexico IDC Scuba Dive Instructor Course  The Process.

To become a SCUBA dive instructor and work anywhere in the world, you need to complete your instructor development course aka your IDC. The instructor development course will cover all the theory and practical modules and learning you need to undertake prior to doing your IE (instructor exam). The instructor exam is overseen by an examiner from the accrediting organisation usually PADI although it is possible to gain instructor qualifications from other agencies such as SSI. The course director who runs the instructor development course (IDC) is just responsible for getting you up to the level where you will pass your instructor exam. For this reason instructor exam fees are not usually included in the cost of IDC’s as the instructor exam fees go directly to PADI.

Prerequisites to becoming a SCUBA dive instructor

Obviously you need to be able to dive, but officially you need to have six months from the initial first SCUBA diving qualification to the dates you start your instructor exam. This means you need to gain experience which is good for the students and obviously good for you as well.

There are several qualifications you will need to go through prior to starting your SCUBA dive instructor course.

  • Open water
  • Advanced open water
  • Rescue and EFR
  • Divemaster

You can then regain your OWSI or open water scuba diver instructor certification. The above are based on the PADI system and is generally interchangeable with other systems such as SSI.

Pre-requisite checklist

  • You must hold a PADI Divemaster certification or equivalent.
  • Have  96 logged dives that include experience in night, deep and navigation diving to participate in the PADI Instructor Development Course. You´ll need 100 logged dives to take the Instructor Exams.
  • Have CPR and First Aid training within the last 24 months.
  • Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months
  • age: 18+

The IDC

The IDC takes place in the pool, open ocean and classroom. Usually run once a month they are done in a group with a course director overseeing the training. The IDC’s are almost always followed directly by the IE and upon completion you can then start to look for a SCUBA dive instructor job. ¡

Training & Course Break Down

If you have no prior diving certifications you start of with your PADI open water certificate, this will take you about 4 days. After that you do your advanced open water which will take you 2 days. Then the more serious work starts and we will take you through the rescue course and your EFR. The Divemaster follows then the IDC.

  • Open Water
  • Advanced Open Water
  • Emergency First Response (First Aid)
  • Rescue Diver Certificate
  • Divemaster
  • EFR Instructor
  • Open Water Scuba Instructor Development Course (The IDC)
  • The Instructor Exams (fees not included)

Pre IDC: The Divemaster

Mexico Divemaster Diving Course (1)The Divemaster internship is where you gain most of your commercial experience in the dive industry.  This is also the point where you really develop those necessary dives and gain experience underwater.  Remember to complete your IDC you need 96 logged dives, if you were to do this by the traditional route of paying fit each dive individually this would cost you a lot more.  During the Divemaster course you will be diving a lot, and through experience learn about how to react to and deal with multiple situations underwater.  This could be whilst diving with clients or reacting to situations involving yourself only.

Are The Instructor Exam Fees Included?

No, unfortunately they are not.  It is pretty expensive to become a Diving instructor, but ultimately worth it. The IDC (abbreviation for Instructor development course) includes the required training both practical and theory with a qualified course director, to get you up to the standards needed to pass the Instructor Examination. The Price of the programme covers the IDC (It also covers the accommodation and diving costs and course learning materials as well), but not the examination fees.

Think of it like learning to drive, you are paying for the lessons, and instruction. The instructor examination fee is just that, it is the fee paid to PADI to sit and mark the exams. They send out their own examiners to mark you and certify you ensuring you are up to standards. The fee is the same regardless of where you sit the exam as these are set down by PADI based in North America.

So please note you will need to budget at least $849 USD on top of the fee to Xtreme Gap to cover the extras. This is however guaranteed, in the unlikely event that you fail your instructor exam we will refund you your fees or put you through your course again so that you pass.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

There are some extra costs not included in the price you pay us, these are fees that are payable direct to PADI to sit your exams. At the time of writing they are (in USD  ):

The Videography Course.

Thailand Filmmaker en stage (18)

Our videography course offers advanced training for Rescue Diver´s so that they can perfect the skills, techniques, theory and philosophy required to produce stunning underwater videos, while minimizing the risk of injury, environmental damage or equipment failure. Go from shaky, blurry and random shots, to beautifully executed rock-star films showcasing the beauty of the underwater world.
Training with some of the top videographers in Koh Tao, in one of the best dive schools on the island, you´ll learn everything you need to become a professional underwater filmmaker. Not only will you become a great videographer, but you´ll also drastically improve your underwater skills, after spending every day diving.

So how does the paid part work?

You sell your videos to other diving students, tourists, and professional open water divers. Earn a commission on each sale, allowing you to supplement your life in Thailand, which is already an extremely cheap country to live a

nd travel in.

The videography course precedes the internship and equips students with all the knowledge and basic techniques they will need to see them through the internship.  You will spend the first two days on land-based theory, practice and equipment techniques, while the following days are used to analyze your progress and initiate the diving sessions. Towards the end of the first week, the course focuses on editing and story-telling techniques to develop a high-quality demo reel of footage. Then the real fun begins:

Underwater Videography Internship in Koh Tao.

Thailand Filmmaker en stage (7)

After the videography course comes the exciting part of the trip; the paid internship! Seven weeks of blissful diving on the gorgeous island of Koh Tao, with some of the best professional divers in Thailand!

Bright and early, you´ll start your day

by diving and filming out in the ocean with fellow students and a professional team of divers. Filming the beauty of the underwater world, you´ll take your footage back to the editing suites and begin an afternoon of editing, experimenting and collaborating to create epic diving movies.

Get up close to an array of beautiful and exotic marine life, learn fun new underwater filming techniques and make the most of the beautiful Thai light to create visually stunning and captivating films for both the customers and yourself.

The best part? You can even sell your creations for cash to other dive students and tourists getting their open water certifications. The dive school is one of the most popular and top rated schools on the island, so there are always plenty of students looking for personal souvenir films as a memento of their trip! You´ll make a commission on each sale, so you can spend it on a nice cold beer after a hard days diving, or put it towards the extended travel fund!

It´s important to note that all students wishing to participate in the videography internship need to have a diving certificate in Rescue Level. If you don´t have this certificate, make sure to check out our other courses in Thailand, which can bring you up to the right level before starting the videography course. It´s important that all students are assessed for safety, as well as for buoyancy skills, as this helps you to lower environmental impact on marine life and shoot better video.

Training Dives

Thailand Filmmaker en stage (10)

During the last few days of the internship, you will put all your valuable experience to the test by producing a final full film, incorporating everything you have learned throughout the course and internship. This final film will also include all your days´ activities, so it´s an excellent way to commemorate your final few days in Thailand with your very own pro-video of your time on the island. What better way to let your family and friends experience ´a day in your life´ as an underwater filmmaker in Koh Tao, Thailand!

What else is there to wish in life? With this amazing course you can become an underwater film maker, learn all about the industry and when work is available you can earn your money on Koh Tao. Koh Tao is a stunning island in Thailand. You will be living next to the beach. The course is provided to you by highly dedicated instructors.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

One of the benefits of booking your trip on Koh Tao with Xtreme Gap Year is not only do you get to do this awesome activity, but you will become part of the Xtreme gap family on Koh Tao. We will pick you up from the pier and give you a warm welcome at our stunning resort. On your first night our resident representative will take you out for a gorgeous Thai meal annual get to know all of the other members of the group. When you are booking a trip with us it is not just about the activity so please bear this in mind if you are comparing prices to other companies. No other company has such a big presence in Koh Tao, runs groups of like-minded travellers so booking a trip with us is as much about the friends you make as well as the experiences you will have.

You need to have diving experience, because you will be taking a camera underwater. You need a minimum of your Rescue and EFR and 20 logged dives. We can help you to train up to the required level. Other requirements are outlined below and can be found on our blog post: Prerequisites Underwater Film maker course Thailand

  • Minimum age to join is 18.
  • Minimum diving experience: Rescue diver and EFR plus a minimum of 20 dives.
  • Great studying and working ethics.

If you do not currently have the required standard of dive experience we can add on a package at the beginning of the programme which will train you up to rescue diver with 20 logged dives. These additional cost are stated on the price tab.

During the last few weeks of the course you make about 12GBP per sold video. You will be filming for example open water students in the morning, edit the movie in the afternoon and show the movies in the evening and hopefully, when they are good enough you sell them. The group you film can exit of 1 to 5 persons, so there is a big change you sell more than one video per group.

Around £20 per day should be enough for a great gap year. If you are not the drinking type and you like more quiet nights you could do it for £15. During the day you will only spend some money on food and water, and trust me, that is cheap!
Thailand is great for a gap year, because the weather is always nice. Maybe except October and November when it is rainy season. But for the rest of the year it is hot and sunny! And even in the rainy season you will have lots of sunshine and hot weather.
Yes, there we will be other Xtreme Gappers on the island. We do never know exactly how many, but there is always an average of 5 to 12 travellers from Xtreme Gap. Not all gap year travellers will be doing the Thailand Divemaster programme. There are also options to do Mixed Martial Arts, Yoga, Free diving and rock climbing on Koh Tao. For more gap year Thailand ideas please check our site. Everyone will stay in the same resort.
The rooms are spacious and clean and have a nice balcony. Every fan room has two single beds, a TV and  ensuite bathroom. If you wish your own room during your gap year diving, there is an option to get your own private room, for just £75 extra a month.
The resort is part of the dive school. There is a reception, bar, restaurant with Thai and Western food, a big pool with sun beds pool, friendly reception, spacious rooms, and internet. The resort is a 2 minute walk from the beach, the bars and the restaurants.
Yes, there is support for you on Koh Tao. Xtreme Gap has a rep on the island that will be there for all gap year travellers. The rep will meet you on arrival at 4 pm at the resort, show you around, take you out for dinner, introduce you to other gap year takers and will be there for you 24/7. Furthermore you will also be working with your instructor closely every day. We will also have an emergency number.
You can buy anything you need on Koh Tao, and it is much cheaper than back home, so pack light! The shops are all close to the resort. You can buy souvenirs, sun lotion, mosquito repellent, swim shorts, flip flops and everything else you might need just on the island.
You would need a backpacker insurance with an upgrade since you will be diving up to 30 meters deep. We recommend InsuredandGo since they offer good value and cover the necessary diving and sports travel activities we offer.
We have arranged that your transfer tickets are ready at the desk of the hotel in Bangkok. The night after arriving you will get on a overnight bus and then in the morning a few hours on the boat. Also the pick up from the pier on Koh Tao on your day of arrival is included. Be sure to check our you tube channel which has detailed video instructions and a walk through. One you are on Koh Tao everything is very easy as the island is 21 square km, and the resort is a 2 minute walk from the beach and all restaurants.

A Week You Will Never Forget

The itinerary is structured to make sure your first week down under is jam packed with the best activities Sydney has to offer. What´s more, accommodation and many meals are included, along with great company and dedicated expert guides for practical support and, of course, to help you milk the most out of every experience along the way.

Meet Your Mates On Monday

Work Up Australia (46)Straight from the plane you drop into the Xtreme Gap base in Sydney, where you´ll meet up with all the other arrivals. For many this is the start of long friendships, that last for the duration of Gap time in Oz and beyond, so it´s super exciting to see everyone meet.
You´ll get an introductory session from your guides, who´ll let you know everything about the practicalities of being in Oz and what you can expect from the first week with us in Sydney. It´s low-key and fun, and everyone´s excited to get going, but before we do, you´ll also get all the arrival admin out the way. This is sorted by us before you get here and includes bank cards, mobile SIMs and tax numbers; all the requirements to set you up for your stay in Oz, beyond your Sydney experience.
From here it´s straight into the city, for a full and comprehensive tour of all the major sights. You´ll see all the fantastic architecture of the Sydney Harbour  from the iconic Opera House, to the formidable steel curves of the Harbour Bridge. Then, it´s on to the Royal Botanical Gardens, where the multitude of Australian fauna blooms in the shadow of the city´s looming skyscrapers.
In the night, you can unwind with a meal and a drink on us, getting to know your fellow travellers late into the Australian night.

Explore Sydney On Tuesday

Work Up Australia (33)After an early start, the Xtreme Gap crew give the whole group a comprehensive introduction to all the ins and outs of working and living in Australia. These guys really are in the know, with first-hand experience of Gapping in Oz, so they have all the answers for what´s what when it comes to setting up camp here.
Afterwards, the focus of Tuesday is all about adventure and exploration. We´ll take you on a Harbour cruise to show you the city sights from a whole new perspective and we´ll delve deeper into the New South Wales cityscape by adventuring to Fort Dennison (a prison-cum-lighthouse glowering over the bays downstream from the Sydney harbour), Luna Park and Watson´s Bay in Woollahra (where the sandstone cliff peninsulas jut dramatically into the ocean).
In between seeing the sights you can swim in the warm waters of the coastline that straddles the harbour, take photos, or just chill in the Sydney sun as you please.

Wildlife and Wild Land On Wednesday

Work Up Australia (36)Wednesday sees us get out of the metropolitan centre of Sydney and into the New South Wales wildlife. The Xtreme Gap basecamp is an area of 6 acres, covered in rich rainforest fauna and home to a myriad of very Australian critters. We set off early from town, to let you get the most of this different setting, where you´ll stay for the next three days and two nights.
Relax in the day in the company of Josie the Kangaroo, or go wildlife spotting to try and catch a glimpse of some koalas, echidnas or possums in the forest, or dolphins and whales in the nearby coastline shallows (the sea is just 5 minutes´ walk from the basecamp!).
After an evening swim watching the Aussie sun dip below the horizon, it´s pizza night at the basecamp!

Thrilling Thursday

Xtreme Sydney Connexion (3)We start Thursday with some adrenaline pumping sand boarding in the nearby dunes. We get up in the 4x4s and ride back down again, so there´s no dune here too high to conquer!
After everyone´s had their fill, it´s of for an adventure filled bush walk, guided by the Xtreme Gap crew. There´s loads of wildlife to see, and the walk ends on one of New South Wales´ best lookout spots, where there´s a chance to take photos and go Koala spotting (here, families are observable the entire year round!). Then, as the sunlight fades and night creeps in, we light the BBQ in true Aussie fashion, and chill out around the camp fire into the early hours.

Party Boat Cruise on Frickin Awesome Friday

Friday´s a real high-point. The Xtreme Gap crew launch our very own boat and everyone gets up close and personal with the rich marine life of the New South Wales seas.

Aside from the bucket list beating dolphin spotting (when you´ll also have a chance to sit in the boom net while dolphins glide through the water below you), it´s also possible to spot whales in the water here.
LVY-jnF1ZSj6c3XHXP_ZtdTpSPcdEWtFS3pOnCDDLqoThe bonus here is that you´ll be on board your very own private boat during the party cruise, with just your guides and fellow gappers as company. We´re in full control of where we go, and we can explore the waters as we please; there really is no better way to experience this amazing place.
After the cruise we depart for Sydney and arrive at the highly rated WakeUp hostel. With a central location and a great selection of nightly entertainments, it´s a great way to get back into ´city mode´ and enjoy the Sydney night in style.

Shindig Saturday

While the day time may all be about chilling and getting some hard earned rest, the night time is about donning your dresses and brushing up nice. We meet in the early evening at one of the city´s best bars, where backpackers and locals enjoy the famous Australian beers, and gear themselves up for a night on the town.
From here, we get hedonistic on the Xtreme Gap Sydney Pub Crawl. With entry and drinks at 4 bars and clubs included, you´ll experience all the facets of nightlife that has made this city so famous.

Slow down, Surf’s up Sunday

Where better than to coax away those hangovers and unwind than the soft-sanded white beaches of Sydney? On Sunday we´ll

BDLfgE7SolUpMDdHPm7l3tkXWGI6M2jomuaCvH4VsM8,sOpVnU7B92ka3X9YME-8YzTip2NgUSgWDVrKT2UE7kU

transverse some of the most famous coastline in the Area, visiting six along the way. From the wide yellow stretches of Coogee, to the famous surf-swells of Bondi, this is among the most coveted beach territory in the world, and today it´s all yours!

Most people opt to start their Oz travels between October and March, as this is when you´ll get the best weather, and Sydney really is fantastic at this time of year. That said, there´s something to be seen here all year round, and the Xtreme Gap Sydney arrival package is a no-holes-barred, full-frills introduction to Gap Years in Oz, with the added bonus of a great bunch of like-minded travellers and fun-hungry tour guides ready and waiting for you in one of the country´s most endearing of cities.

Accommodation

s1You will be staying in downtown Sydney in the wakeup hostel, voted one of the best hostels in Australia, and consistently hitting the top of trip advisor.

The wakeup hostel is an awesome place to be located as everything is on your doorstep including our team who have their offices based directly in front of where you’ll be staying.

That means you can pop in there at any stage, access their free Internet (kind of handy in Australia is everywhere tends to charge you) but also you’ll be staying in one of the swankiest hostels in Australia.

There are loads of facilities available at the wakeup hostel, good chill out areas, comfy beds and safe and secure rooms. Is also slap bang in the middle of backpacker district, which means it’s really social, and everything is on your doorstep.

We are often asked if it is possible to get a job prior to arriving in Australia, and the simple answer to this is no. You need to be on the ground and available for interview and keen to attend to secure those jobs, but it really does help that you have a dedicated team in Sydney backing up hunting for those exclusive jobs for you.

Sydney is by far the best place to start your Australian adventure. It is the economic powerhouse of the country, and it is one of the best places to live in the world. We have plenty of further information about Sydney on our blog so feel free to check it out, the information covers all sorts of things like reviews of the activities, what it’s like to live in Sydney and plenty of other useful information.
Yes it is, in order for you to know exactly where the best places are and do the best things available to you in Sydney, we have a couple of awesome group leaders who will sort you out and make sure you have the best time possible.
You have to be between the ages of 18 and 30 and be a national one of the participating countries in the Australian working holiday visa system. If you’re from the UK then this is absolutely no problem providing you have not already applied for one in the past.
Know the working holiday Visa is not covered in the cost of the trip, you will need to apply for one prior to entering Australia, the cost varies but this usually about hundred and £120.
Most people arrive on the Sunday, there is included airport transfer with this trip, so you make your own way to the hostel but this is prepaid for (you will be issued with a voucher before you arrive allowing you to jump on a bus dropping you straight at your accommodation). Yes there are certain dates where this trip does not run, these tend to be during the major events in Sydney like New Year’s Eve, Christmas and a few select other dates contact us if you want to know the dates.
Yes absolutely, it’s quite easy to set up a bank account by mobile phone Sim card and arrange all the essentials yourself, however this does take quite some time to arrange, as you physically have to visit banks and do all the organising yourself. The beauty of this trip is that we take all the hassle out of arranging all staff meaning you can devote your first week in Sydney to just having fun making friends and kick starting your trip in the best way possible. The other majorly cool thing about this is the friends that you make, everyone is in the same boat and often lifelong friendships are formed in this first week, it’s not uncommon for people to end up travelling with other members of the group and the feedback we get from our previous groups shows that this is much more fun than just turning up in Sydney and doing your own thing.
Simply fill in your booking form and put down your hundred pound deposit, then your space is guaranteed, the final balance of the trip is payable 12 weeks before you depart give you plenty of time to save flights and spending money.
Other than giving you an amazing first week and access to jobs on tap. This trip is great for enhancing your CV with work experience. Whilst many people may struggle to explain away travel to future employers, it shows that you have self-reliance and ability to be responsible for yourself as you travel. It shows motivation and actual practical work experience as well. It takes some guts to up sticks and move to another country, but with the help of this program you can demonstrate you are more than capable of taking on the challenge.

The job assistance team is available in the office Monday to Friday and can help you out by reviewing your CV, giving you advice and running through the latest backpacker jobs.  The service is not just limited to Sydney, they find jobs all over Australia and you can communicate with them on the move via e-mail and phone.

There are thousands of amazing jobs on offer for backpackers in Australia. You are pretty much only limited by your imagination, you can find work in the cities, in surfer towns, the mountains or outback. It really takes the pressure off knowing that there is a team dedicated to help you apply and setup job interviews.

Even though you may not be looking to find paid work in Australia for the entire year, the job support service lasts an 12 months. That’s great because you never know way Australia adventure will take you.  A large percentage of people on a working holiday Visa, do extend to a second year.

It’s not actually just the physical assistance that is beneficial in helping you with your job search.  You can use the free Wi-Fi access in the office if you have your own laptop or smart phone which helps you access the jobs database.  You can also use their printer for printing out your CV.  Now if this sounds petty, believe us it’s not.  Wi-Fi access in Australia is quite expensive so it’s the little things that really make your job search less hassle.

One of the great things about this program is that the Australia job support service is totally flexible around you.  That means you can go after the jobs that inspire you, after all your Australia trip is more about fun but working. That worklife balance is completely in your control. With plenty of access to loads of Australian jobs, it can really make your trip amazing. Itinerary

The course consists of four components. The course is for novices so don’t worry if you have no previous  experience  of sailing.

Starts each Monday, departing Abel Point Marina at 9:00am.

Week 1:

Training takes place on our NSCV (National Standards for Commercial Vessels) registered boat, where you will live aboard for five nights and six days, undergoing theory and practical application, while sailing around the Whitsunday Islands.
Includes: All meals on board, course notes, tuition, snorkelling instruction and equipment, marine and national park fees, training record log books and certificates.

Weeks 2 & 3:

Twelve nights on sailing tours, comprising of six, two day two night, Maxi Sailing tours around the Whitsundays as an extra crew member aboard our charter yachts. Trainees will be rostered on the yachts and get to work with professional crews, reinforcing the theory, plus learning other customer service aspects of working on charter yachts.

Plus

Six nights backpackers dorm/shared accommodation in Airlie Beach to be used for nights in between tours when not at sea.

The programme is specifically tailored and managed all the way through from Day 1 to Day 23.
With an additional two weeks of consolidation training specifically to practice the theory/skills learned from the first week, the programme is geared towards getting the  participants ready to work on the ultra high specification Maxi yacht favoured in the Whitsundays.

  • The first week is undertaken on a smaller yacht, learning the basics in a safe environment before moving to the Maxi yachts.
  • Weeks two and three take in all the other aspects of working on the Maxi, including managing guests, snorkelling watches, guided island walks, re-provisioning, turning vessels and refuelling.

On this programme you will receive two full crew uniforms, and six nights accommodation in Airlie Beach. This is a fully managed programme from day one, our team will manage the 23 day schedule for you:   rostering on the yachts, booking in accommodation and dealing with operational aspects for the participants.

Itinerary for the learn to earn course:

Day 1: Sunday, Check in and  pick up all of your course materials and at 4 PM you meet at the boat. You will be sleeping on board tonight ready to start your training course in the morning.

Day 2- 6: Your sale training crew course will run from day to all the way through to day six. This is a crash course detailing everything you need to know about being a competent crew person on board a boat. You learn about marine rope work and knots, your handling under power and sail. We include all of the essential boating information you need including rules and regulations, planning preparing the yacht for a safe trip handling sales, and safe operation of the yacht at sea. You will learn about avoiding and managing emergencies and general information on etiquette as well.

Day 7 Saturday: if you are booked on the advanced course you will do your speed boat licence today. Please note you will need to provide for your own meals today. If you are enrolled on the basic program, you get a day off to enjoy rarely beach. Head down to the lagoon and take a swim and kick back and relax in this awesome backpacker spot. Tonight you will be staying in a hostel.

Day 8 Sunday is taken off, you will need to provide for your own meals. At 4 PM it’s time to meet in the marina is tonight you will be staying on board.

Day 9 – 13: This week you will gain practical experience reinforcing the knowledge you learnt on your course the previous week. You will be crewing on boats so be expected to get your hands dirty and participate as a genuine crewmember. It can be hard sometimes dirty work, but it’s all about mucking in. This is your time to shine and show enthusiasm, because employment is not guaranteed at the end of the course, but usually those who show a lot of promise during this section the trip get selected first for a full-time crew position.

Day 14: Saturday. Can be spent at your leisure enjoying Airlie beach. You will need to provide your own meals today. Tonight you’ll be staying in the hostel.

Day 15 -16 Sunday- Monday: Yu will gain experience sailing on a large Maxi Yacht.

Day 17: Tuesday you will finish the maxi trip at 1 PM and head back to the hostel. You will need to provide your own meals today.

Day 18-19: Again you will go out on a maxi sailing vessel. Reinforcing what you have learnt over the previous weeks.

Day 20: at 1 PM on Friday the boat will dock and you have the rest of the afternoon off.

Day 21-22: Back out on the boats on Saturday for another sailing trip. This will be the final one prior to the course ending.

Day 23: Monday the boat docks at around 1 PM on day 23. Check out at the office, and sit down with them to discuss next steps on finding employment. You will need to provide your own meals on day 23.

Man, that cup of coffee will taste good in the morning as you watch the sunrise over the ocean…

All of the different courses start in Airlie Beach at Abel Point Marina. This is where you will receive a comprehensive orientation and safety briefing prior to heading out into the tropical waters for your training.

This certificate gives you the skills to command your own PRIVATE vessel. The International Crew Certificate and documents (IYT) requires a local payment of AUD$100, not included in the price.

Note: If you already have sailing certificates, we can adjust the programme for you.

Finding work after the course

We have 80 operational crew working on the fleet of 16 vessels who work with us in the Whitsundays. Approximately  20% of these crew positions are filled by graduates of this programme. Only 4 spaces are available on this course per month.

It is difficult to predict when crew will be moving onto another location or job or switching to other boats in the Whitsundays, but typically staff move on after 3 to 6 months.

This is very important: We DO NOT guarantee work, however, if you are diligent and punctual, attend work neat and tidy, get good results and reports from the Skippers and Crew you work with, the odds of employment improve.

You may have to wait a while for a vacancy as we cannot predict when crew will move on to create vacancies. You are welcome to seek work with other Whitsunday operators who will be looking for the same skills. We also monitor the number of applicants starting the program, and do at times block out spots if we think too many are starting.

During December the crew numbers leaving does tend to increase, creating more vacancies. It is important to note that we encourage the students who have finished the course, that they are welcome to seek work with other companies in Airlie Beach, and our operational managers do speak to the other companies regularly regarding staffing and employments.

What does the job include

The job typically includes most accommodation and food, and you can be paid up to $500 a week. Imagine spending your time cruising one of the worlds most beautiful locations and have no living expenses and getting paid!
Many gap year students end up working for a few months, saving up a boat load of cash and then travelling further.

Who joins?

The sailing course is open to anyone over the age of 18. It is perfect if you are seeking a career in marine tourism (read living on various cool yachts, sailing the around one of the world’s best marine parks in the eternal sunshine of Australia!). You do not need any prior experience if you want to join the full 23 day course.

Accommodation

During the course you will be spending five days a week on the boat you are training on in shared (two persons) accommodation. You will be staying with someone of the same sex, unless you are a couple of course!

During the weekends you will stay in a nice hostel in Airlie beach. A young and vibrant little town, with plenty going on for when you are not working.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes and no! Work on the commercial charter yachts can be pretty tough: provisioning the yacht, assisting guests, assisting with cleaning, working the decks, assisting the cook. However, if you are energetic and don’t mind getting involved, you will love it.
On the course all meals and linen are provided. All you need to bring is your swim gear, sun screen, clothing, a hat and sunglasses. As you will be spending the entire day on the water, you better also bring a t-shirt with long sleeves  so not to get sun burnt. When you are going in the Australian autumn or winter, you might need a jacket too.
If you wish to continue work in the industry your logbook is enough proof of education. You will need to continue getting this signed off as you work, this is proof of on-going training and/or experience also. The log book is a legal document.   An international certificate as such is not existent, you need to present your logbook.
This is not an advanced course as training to be a skipper/master of a vessel does require ongoing experience and training. This is a fantastic way to start a career in the marine industry.
By taking this course you are given priority for when jobs arise in the fleet. There are other shorter courses on offer providing similar qualifications. However, anyone who has done a sailing course on a small boat (say 25 to 45ft) would soon quickly realise that working on a Maxi is a whole new ball game. The rigging is different, the loads are different, you have coffee grinder winches, multiple winches working together and these yachts can really cause harm if people are not familiar, trained and experienced. This programme gives you experience on the big yachts and greatly increases your employment prospects.
Airlie Beach is really popular, and for good reasons too.
When you head out from Europe to do the Whitsundays as your first Australian adventure, the best place to fly into is Cairns or Brisbane. You can take the bus to Airlie Beach, around 600km from Cairns and 1,100km from Brisbane. Check out the Oz Experience bus pass and see some of Australia on your way…..When you are already in Sydney there are two options. The fastest is to fly from Sydney via Hamilton Island to Airlie Beach (around 120GBP one way). Airlie Beach has only got an airport for internal flights.    For your information Sydney to Airlie Beach is around 1,900km.
The Australian Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 costs around   £170, which is the equivalent of €215. Rates change constantly so use this only as an indication. Furthermore you need to have  around £2,000 in your bank account when you enter Australia with a Working Holiday Visa. You will apply for a visa before you go and will do this online at the website of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of the Australian Government.
Yes, you can undertake the 23 day programme. If you do not have a Working Holiday Visa, you cannot apply for a job with us at the end of the course. Some guests have done this course because they saw it as a good way to spend three weeks.
Unfortunately we  are not affiliated with the RYA, so we would not employ someone with any of the RYA qualifications, for example the RYA Day Skipper Qualification. So, in order to be able to obtain a job with us you have to do the course.

Please note that during your free time you are located right next to the jobs office so you can spend your time applying for jobs and get yourself sorted with a backpacker job straight away.

What are the activities in detail?

What could be more helpful than having a contact on the ground before you are even out there! After booking: you’ll be contacted by Australian-based partners in Sydney who you can email at any time. Any questions at all will be answered direct from the horses mouth.
Jet lag is a bitch. Not that it has to be. We’ll pre-arrange your Shuttle Bus and you’ll be dropped-off at your hostel in no time (Platinum and gold package), or on the silver and wake up you will be given instructions on how to get to the Wake Up (a door to door service from the airport), with your fare refunded on arrival.
Our preferred partners for accommodation in Sydney is the Wake up. Why? It is young funky and an awesome place to be. (Check the video section for a little more info)- The Wake up has a superb location, right in the backpacking hub of Sydney, close to Central Station, our partners have an office at your disposal round the corner and loads of bars, pubs & shops. Everything you need is just a short walk away.

An impressive CV is essential for getting a good job in Australia. The dedicated Job Consultants will be at your disposal to review your CV / Resume and provide recommendations for any essential improvements required to get you into work.

To get set up in Australia you need an address, how else could you get a bank account, tax file number and more importantly where else would you send all your overweight items purchased enroute in Asia. If you have moved on from Sydney by the time those dodgy fisherman pants have arrived from Thailand, no worries, we will forward you mail for free to wherever you are in Australia!
We’ll open your account with the Commonwealth Bank Australia before you leave home. We will send you all the details you need so that you can transfer some money into the account before you leave (ahem parents).
We’ll reserve your Australian mobile phone number activate your Sim card and give your number when you arrive in Australia
If you do not have one you will be taxed at 49%! We’ll arrange your Taxfile number as soon as you arrive so you’ll get taxed the right amount and -if needed- be ready to work straight away!
It is like health Insurance, lets hope you won ´t need it.
Uber boring, but handy when you leave! We will help you with any tax queries you may have throughout the year, help you claim a tax refund after working in Australia and help you claim your Superannuation after leaving the country. That alone can be worth Thousands of Pounds.
Finding accommodation in Sydney can be difficult. Sydney is one of the most popular cities to live in in the world, and rental housing is in very short supply. If you plan to stay and work in Sydney for a while, you´ll save money and make great friends in a shared house. We’ll help you beat the rush of thousands of other travellers by giving you all the advice and guidance you need to help find a furnished shared house: by the beach, inner city and all of Sydney´s top locations.

Whats the big deal about free internet? You find it everywhere in the UK, but Australia it is a different matter. Internet is quite expensive, usually about £12 for 24 hours access.   Just uploading your pictures to Facebook over the course of you travels will cost you a bomb. Free WiFi for 12-months weekdays at our partner office in Sydney. Nice.

Got a problem? Call us and we can help.

Extra Curricular Activities

Above and beyond our regular SLT curriculum the following are included in the SLT Explorer program:

  • Trip to Banff National Park and the Canadian Rockies.
  • Road trip to the Pacific Rim National Park on the coast of Vancouver Island and go surfing. A great way to relax after all that skiing and boarding on the SLT course!
  • One final grand adventure! We’ll access the remote alpine via helicopter then climb and ski in the majestic Coast Range.

Many other extras (both included and optional) are available to pack out any remaining spare time off the snow! Activities are usually chosen by group consensus but to give you an idea, these are things we’ve done in the past with groups:

  • We usually enter a dodgeball team in the local league and play weekly matches.
  • We’ll head to the big city watch an NHL hockey game! Revelstoke is a few hours road trip from Calgary to catch a Flames game… and on our Vancouver Island courses we often catch the ferry over to Vancouver to see the ‘Canucks’ in action and party it up city style.
  • We’ll often rent the local arena and play a  hockey game… which can be pretty comical if you are just learning to skate.
  • Learn how to make hand make skis and snowboards with our Friends at ‘Kindred Custom Skis & Boards.’
  • A day of Snowmobiling is always a great Canadian past time.
  • We go on day adventures such as bungy jumping or caving or visit hot springs
  • Float around at the aquatic centre
  • Practice your moves on the trampolines at the gymnastics centre
  • Hang out at the Climbing Gym
  • Road trips to other ski resort along the way
  • Surfing, sea kayaking, whale watching, fishing, mountain biking, golfing, white water rafting, and having weenie roasts on the beach are all options once we get to Vancouver Island

Canada Ski Instructor and Snow Board Instructor Course  Frequently Asked Questions

You will notice a lot of training organisations offering ski instructor courses. These companies only include CSIA/CASI level 1 in the actual course fees… But if you read the fine print anything beyond that is at an extra cost. (CSIA/CASI LEVEL 2 is usually required if students want any chance to obtain a working visa sponsorship the following year).

Some try to fluff up their programs by including a very basic avalanche day or a 1 day first aid course but these for the most part are not accredited courses. With our course, we include all the training fees, and provide you with a 40 hour wilderness training course. Our students come away more highly qualified and ready to hit a competitive snow sports instructor jobs market.

With all the certifications and experience you gain on this program you really should not have any difficulties finding work as a ski or snowboard instructor at resorts all over the world. Some graduates may be eligible to return to Mt. Washington Resort for employment the following year. We will often act as a reference for alumni looking for employment in the industry. For those looking to pursue a career guiding in the backcountry this program will give you many of the prerequisites required for further training.
Luckily for most, especially people from the UK and European countries, all you need is a valid passport and you will be permitted to enter Canada for a period of six months! People from some countries may need to apply for a Visitors Visa in advance.
Check the following link to to see whether or not it is necessary for you. Canada visa information
Well you should be at an “intermediate” level or higher, if you want to start the course. You should be comfortable on blue runs (which confusingly are Red runs in Europe).
You will need money for breakfasts, lunches on the hill and meals on weekends. Most people also like to go for a few drinks at the end of the day or out to movies etc. Furthermore if you wish to take part in some of the extra curricular road trips and adventures there will be additional costs. The amount you spend can vary greatly and although many people can get by on much less, an average budget is between $100 ” $250 CAD per week, which is around 60 to 160GBP. The biggest expense for some people is beer in the pub about 5 to 6.50CAD for a pint. And for food anywhere from 25CAD (eat in on the cheap) to a maximum of 125CAD (eat out) per week.
If you are not covered by Canada´s health care system, you will need travel medical insurance (this is mandatory). Make sure your insurance covers you for adventure sports. You may also wish to purchase trip cancellation insurance in case of sickness or injury, which prevents you from completing the course (optional).
There are no guarantees. The certifications such as the CSIA level 2 ski instructor certification, CASI level 2 snowboard instructor certification and the Wilderness First Aid course have quite high standards. We do, however, promise to provide the best possible training for you to be successful. We exams are achievable by most people who apply themselves and train hard. In some cases it is possible to be re-examined at a later date although additional exam fees may apply.
Does a bear poop in the woods? Yes. So ski through them a little quicker in Canada. The course cost covers a full season pass for Mt. Washington Resort, which is also good for night skiing/riding and the resorts world class cross-country ski area. You will also have the opportunity to visit North Vancouver Island´s great little community ski hill: Mt. Cain.
There will be plenty of opportunities to party! Although we try to focus a little more on ski and snowboard training and leadership development than some other “gap year” programs. We still know the value of being able to let loose.
No company can actually guarantee a job (although some claim to). Provided you are successful on the course and present with a good working attitude, then we will recommend you for employment with the Mount Washington Snow school for the following season. So far everyone who we have ever recommended has been employed. The snow school will then sponsor you for a working visa to come back to Canada and there is no need to apply for one. Graduates of our 12 week course are generally hired on full time for the following ski season (December to April) although shifts can vary.
If you would prefer to try somewhere new, then we are happy to act as references. Our graduates are working in the industry all over the world. Having all seven certifications included in the course will give you a distinct advantage. (Much of our competition actually offer the equivalent of our 4 week basic course in an 11 week package to make it look comparable. But if you look at the fine print they are not).
Starting wages in Canada are pretty low compared to some skiing nations. It will be around $12 per hour, but increase significantly with experience, further qualifications and the ability to gain return clientele. Request lessons pay significantly more.
We organize free or inexpensive activities on weekends, but we also organize some optional extra curricular trips. For example going to Vancouver for an NHL hockey game and usually costs around 250 to 300CAD. You can also do bungee jumping costs around 100CAD. Sounds expensive but most other stuff we do is cheap or free.
Used equipment will costs between 250 and 450CAD. New equipment between 500 and 1400CAD. (Depending on his tastes and what you actually need). We do get 25% discount at the local ski shop.

“On arrival there was a short queue to check in but there were many people to check in and 3 staff members were on duty. If you are wrecked after your flight or simply flinch at the thought of queues then never fear there is a comfy couch in the reception area. The girl who checked us in was extremely friendly, thorough and efficient (which I cannot say for previous hostels I stayed in!). We were given several drinks vouchers for the Globe bar which we discovered is the main backpacker bar in the city! See more reviews here.”

Full itinerary week 1

The itinerary for the 1st week is structured to make sure your first week down under is jam packed with the best activities Sydney has to offer. What´s more, accommodation and many meals are included, along with great company and dedicated expert guides for practical support and, of course, to help you milk the most out of every experience along the way.

Meet Your Mates On Monday

Straight from the plane, you drop into the Xtreme Gap base in Sydney, where you´ll meet up with all the other arrivals.

After an early start, the Xtreme Gap crew give the whole group a comprehensive introduction to all the ins and outs of working and living in Australia.

Wednesday sees us get out of the metropolitan centre of Sydney and into the New South Wales wildlife.

We start Thursday with some adrenaline pumping sand boarding in the nearby dunes.

Then, as the sunlight fades and night creeps in, we light the BBQ in true Aussie fashion, and chill out around the campfire into the early hours.

The bonus here is that you´ll be on board your very own private boat, with just your guides and fellow gappers as company.

While the daytime may all be about chilling and getting some hard earned rest, the night time is about donning your dresses and brushing up nice.

Leaving Sydney on Sunday

We’ll arrange your train journey to Tamworth, NSW where you’ll spend a night before starting your Ranch Course. Get to meet others in your group. Your accommodation is pre-arranged. The following morning, our rep will meet you at reception and take you to the farm.

Part 2: Work on a Ranch in Australia

What can you expect to be doing this second week?

Horse Riding & Handling

Learn how to ride on horseback, and gain knowledge and skills needed for general horse handling and care. Be introduced to the way of Natural Horsemanship, learn how horses think and communicate with them. Take the horses for a swim in a local swimming hole (in the warmer months).

Lassoing

The lasso is used today in rodeos as part of the competitive events, such as calf roping and team roping. It is also still used on working ranches to capture cattle or other livestock when necessary. You will learn to catch cattle with a lasso and have competitions with your fellow students.

Cattle Mustering

We’ll muster cattle from the paddocks to the yard. Assist with stock work such as drenching and tagging. A muster is the process of gathering livestock and usually involve cattle, sheep or horses, but may also include goats, camels, buffalo or other animals.

Fencing

Fencing is one of the most important pieces of farm infrastructure and our instructors will show you how to install and maintain fences. A properly installed fence will keep livestock/pets safe and secured and will keep any unwanted visitors outside the property.

Sheep Shearing

On Aussie farms, shearing is generally carried out in the spring, so sheep don’t become overheated in the summer. A long fleece is likely to become dirty and drag along the ground, decreasing the mobility of sheep. During your course, you will shear a sheep and learn about sheep health and husbandry.

Learn & Earn As a Dive Instructor

It is a pretty good life style you have as a  Scuba Instructor and it is very rewarding too! You help people overcome their fear and make them feel really proud. Imagine having happy students around you every day. Of course the view from the office is pretty tough, usually the worlds best beach resorts, yes it is a tough life, but someone has to do it.

How do you become a    Scuba Instructor? Complete Your  Thailand IDC

If you are a complete novice in diving it will take you 7 months to train up to become a dive instructor, but is a pretty awesome 7 months. Why 7? Well the rules set out by PADI state you can not become a dive instructor until 6 months from your first open water qualification. If you have prior dive experience you can achieve this in one month

Prior to starting your IDC you will need to complete your Divemaster course. During which you will enjoy unlimited diving living on a tropical island paradise!

Most of the time the sea is your class room! And your work uniform is swimwear, the cantina is a nice Thai restaurant and your teachers are all tanned and happy to help you out becoming one of them!

Becoming A SCUBA Dive Instructor – Before you start

There are usually two types of people that think about becoming a SCUBA dive instructor.

Doing Your IDC The Process.

  • MSDT

You can then regain your OWSI or open water scuba diver instructor certification. The above are based on the PADI system and is generally interchangeable with other systems such as SSI.

The IDC

The IDC takes place in the pool, open ocean and classroom. Usually run once a month they are done in a group with a course director overseeing the training. The IDC’s are almost always followed directly by the IE and upon completion you can then start to look for a SCUBA dive instructor job.

Training & Course Break Down

Zero to Hero Dive Instructor Thailand (3)If you have no prior diving certifications you start of with your PADI open water certificate, this will take you about 4 days. After that you do your advanced open water which will take you 2 days. Then the more serious work starts and we will take you through the rescue course and your EFR. The Divemaster follows then the IDC.

  • Open Water
  • Advanced Open Water
  • Emergency First Response (First Aid)
  • Rescue Diver Certificate
  • Divemaster
  • EFR Instructor
  • Open Water Scuba Instructor Development Course (The IDC)
  • The Instructor Exams (fees not included)

Pre IDC: The Divemaster

Zero to Hero Dive Instructor Thailand (5)The first oroffessional qualification: The Divemaster. During this time you can dive as much as you want.

The Divemaster internship is where you gain most of your commercial experience in the dive industry. At this point some opt to work as a Divemaster (if a position is vacant) and this then becomes a paid position. This is not Guaranteed, but fairly realistic when spending several months training.

If you are a Divemaster you can guide dives, you can not teach people how to dive. Being a Divemaster is fun and you will be able to work in the dive industry anywhere in the world but if you want to take it one step further and have a properly paid job (Divemasters do not earn much) in the dive industry and really teach people how to dive you have to continue your course and do the instructor course!

Are The Instructor Exam Fees Included?

Zero to Hero Dive Instructor Thailand (7)No, unfortunately they are not.

So please note you will need to budget at least £800 on top of the fee to Xtreme Gap to cover the extras

Think of it like learning to drive, you are paying for the lessons, and instruction. The instructor examination fee is just that, it is the fee paid to PADI to sit and mark the exams. They send out their own examiners to mark you and certify you ensuring you are up to standards. The fee is the same regardless of where you sit the exam as these are set down by PADI based in Australia.

Now in extreme cases someone may not pass the exam, so fees are never included because it is up to you to be able to pass, this means if you failed you would have to pay the exam fee again.

We say extreme cases because our Course Director Guy Corsellis, has a 100% pass rate and is one of the longest serving course directors in Thailand. He has certified well over 1000 instructors in his career.

This means it is a big investment to train as a dive instructor, with the cost of this programme and living costs involved, but it does cover you for 6 months, and because you will be living and training in Koh Tao, the worlds top location for scuba certifications, it gives you plenty of time to network and get to know the dive school owners (there are 38 there) , so it is easier to snag the instructor jobs available when they become available.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

There are some extra costs not included in the price you pay us, these are fees that are payable direct to PADI to sit your exams. At the time of writing they are (in Australian Dollars):

EFRI 156 AUD$ , IDC application fee 227 AUD$ and the IE fee AUD$…totalling up to 1168 AUD$

Please note this figure is a guide and can change (it is set by PADI not Xtreme).

Yes, the Koh Tao course is adaptable. Eg. we can shorten your trip if you have existing qualifications when you start your Koh Tao  IDC  instructor course. However remember you need to have at least 6 months gap between gaining your first diving qualification (Open Water) and becoming a Dive Instructor.

To train on the Koh Tao diving course you will need to fill in a medical statement and pass a medical exam. You will definitely notice that your fitness levels improve significantly as you advance through the Koh Tao Divemaster course. Bear in mind you will be swimming for up to 4 hours, this has a great impact on your fitness and health. However before beginning the course you need to be reasonably fit and healthy. You will also need to pass a PADI instructor swim www.

20 to 25 pounds a day should be enough for a great gap year. If you are not the drinking type and you like more quiet nights you could do it for 15 pounds. During the day you will only spend some money on food and water, and trust me, that is cheap!

The rooms are spacious and clean and have a nice balcony. Every room has 2 single beds, a TV and an en suite bathroom. If you want your own room during your gap year diving, there is an option for your own room for 75 euro extra a month.

The resort is part of the dive school. There is a reception, bar, restaurant with Thai and Western food, a big pool with sun beds pool, friendly reception, spacious rooms, and internet. The resort is a 2 minute walk from the beach, the bars and the restaurants.

You do not need experience. But you do need to be able to swim, not excellent, but you need to be able to swim around the dive boat. The diving in Thailand programme of Xtreme Gap gives you plenty of time, more than most programmes. But please do realize it is a big commitment so make sure you really want to do it.

We have arranged that your transfer tickets are ready at the desk of the hotel in Bangkok. The night after arriving you will get on a overnight bus and then in the morning a few hours on the boat. Also the pick up from the pier on Koh Tao on your day of arrival is included. The island is 21 square KM, and the resort is a 2 minute walk from the beach and all restaurants. So once you are on Koh Tao everything can be done by foot.

Thailand is great for a gap year because the weather is always nice. Maybe except October and November, than it is rainy season. The rest of the year it is hot and sunny! And even in the rainy season you will have lots of sunshine and hot weather.

Yes. We do never know exactly how many, but there is always an average of 5 to 12 travellers from Xtreme Gap.

Not all gap year travellers will be doing the Thailand dive programme. There are also options to do Martial arts on Koh Tao, Yoga, Free diving and rock climbing. For more gap year Thailand ideas please check our site. Everyone will stay in the same resort.

Yes. Xtreme Gap has a rep on the island that will be there for all gap year travellers. The rep will pick you up from the pier, show you around, take you out for dinner, introduce you to other gap year takers and will be there for you 24/7. Then you will also be working with your dive instructor daily. We also have an emergency number.

You can buy anything you need on Koh Tao, and it is much cheaper than back home, so pack light! The shops are all close to the resort. You can buy souvenirs, sun lotion, mosquito repellent, swim shorts, flip flops and everything else you might need.

If you are from the UK you can book gap year travel insurance online on the Xtreme Gap website. You would need the backpacker option and then the upgrade since you will be diving up to 30 meters deep during your gap year. We have chosen to work with this company since they are good value and cover the necessary diving and sports options Xtreme Gap has for gap years.

The first thing we should mention is rules do change very frequently in Thailand, so this is just a guideline and you need to take responsibility for checking the accuracy. Having said that this is a question we are asked often and this is the current advice we are giving regarding visas.

Before you travel to Thailand you will need a double entry 60 day tourist VISA. This will enable you to get 60 days when you  first enter Thailand which can be extended by 30 days in Koh Samui either personally or we can send yourpassport over to our representative and they´ll do it for a fee, then at the end of that 30 days you will have to do a visa run and going over to Burma.

This is the closest place to do a VISA run, which takes place overnight you leave in the evening and you are back on Koh Tao the following morning. When you re-enter Thailand you will get the second 60 day visa activated. Once this is nearly expired this can once again be can be extended by 30 days in Samui.

This takes you to 6 months. If you are on the seven month course you will still need an additional month which requires you to do one final VISA run.

Some people from certain countries do now get 30 day tourist visas when they enter Thailand over a land boarder, the UK is one of these, but Ireland isn´t. The list of countries which now get 30 day visas when they cross a land border is;

  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • UK
  • United States.

So if you are from any of the above countries you are able to do one additional VISA run to complete the trip, if you are from other countries you may need to do to visa runs, please check with the course director to ensure that your visa runs do not interfere with the timing of the final instructor exam.
