This is a professional level qualification enabling you to earn a living in the Dive industry, move on to becoming a Dive Instructor and it gives you a license to look good in a wetsuit.

Training to become a Divemaster anywhere is a fantastic way to spend several months abroad. There are few other travel activities that can provide you with this much adventure and fun and of course the excitement of being underwater in a completely different world totally different to everything you are used to. It is highly addictive. On this course, it is particularly special because it is located in the Caribbean, on the world’s second-largest barrier Reef, with some superb dive sites so you will really enjoy your days diving in crystal clear seas.

Utila, the smallest of the smallest islands off the coast of Honduras in the Bay Islands has it all! On the island of Utila, which borders on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system, (the 2nd largest reef in the world after the Australian Great Barrier Reef) you will discover some of the most beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and tropical island sunsets in the world. With over 100 different dive sites to choose from, including caves and wrecks (such as the famous Halliburton), here scuba diving is always interesting and never crowded.

The reef system is home to more than 65 species of stony coral, 350 species of mollusc and more than 500 species of fish. Also, it is known as the “Whale Shark Capital of the Caribbean” and is a famous location for Whale Shark encounters, year round.

And it’s not just the diving! You will be living the life on a tropical island in off the coast of Honduras in the Bay Islands. There is plenty to do here, stunning beaches, water sports, exploring and also quite a bit of nightlife! With some cool beach bars and lovely restaurants, there is always something going on in this tropical paradise.

Itinerary

Divemaster internship Honduras (14)There is no set itinerary during a Divemaster course, each day is different with different dive sites and different things to learn depending on which stage of your Divemaster internship you are at. Typically a day would involve waking up bright and early, pack equipment jumping on the boat and then going for a spectacular dive before breakfast, some days you will be shadowing instructors, other days taking clients the dive is leading them through the dive sites and giving them their pre-dive safety briefings, and of course there is some theory and study about the safety of diving and everything you need to learn to become a Divemaster.

Students with no dive experience. 7-week programme

No diving necessary but we suggest that you have at least tried diving in a pool or have done a Discover Scuba Diving course to see that you enjoy the experience. We would take you through Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, First Aid and Divemaster.

Dive and Learn Every Day

Divemaster internship Honduras (21)During your Divemaster training, you will be able to dive and learn every day. You will discover a mix of hard and soft corals and abundant marine life from sharks to turtles and thousands of fish. The sites vary in depth from just a few meters down to 40 meters, there is little current and the water temperature is always warm, ranging from about 27 Celcius to 32 Celcius offering amazing conditions to dive every day of your Divemaster course abroad!

 

 

Personal attention and superb dive training

You will never be alone unless you want to. We work together with small and very professional dive school and who are able to give you a lot of

personal attention and training. You will be part of the crew once you have done your open water, advanced open water and rescue diving certificates as you then start the Divemaster internship.

From that moment on you will be assisting at dives and following your own personal instructor teaching you all you need to know as a Divemaster. You will meet divers from all over the world, some staying long term just like you and some just diving for a few weeks.

Accommodation

Your home away from home will be in a shared apartment next to the Divecentre. you will share with other students, which makes it super social.

Usually, after a day of diving, you meet up for a drink and chat with the staff, other divemaster students and dive customers that you might have been guiding underwater.

The diving on Util is some of the best found on the planet, with over 40 dive sites, wreck dives, lots of marine life (including dolphins!), walls and shore dives. Why you should become a Divemaster and train in the Caribbean:

You need to be a confident swimmer and at least 18 years old. Furthermore, you have pass the check for the health requirements before arriving to make sure that you are OK to dive.
Officially you need 40 logged dives to start the DM course and 60 to get certified. As soon as you get here we will get you diving and once we know you are comfortable in the water you can start helping out on dives, staying shallower with less experienced divers, while the instructor goes deeper but within sight, or staying with divers who use a lot of air so you can take them up when they get low on air. If you are not studying or completing assignments you will be diving, probably 1 or 2 dives a day.
All diving equipment is included for ow, aow, rescue and EFR, but when you start your Divemaster we provide use of BCD/regulator/weights/tanks but expect Divemaster candidates to have their own mask/snorkel, fins, dive computer, SMB, wetsuit, dive light. We can offer a special rate for this.
You can do the Utila Dive Master Course all year round. March through to November is the dry season, but even in the rainy season, you can come as we do not get much rain. You can expect busy times during Christmas and cheap flights in November.

For the course we quite often have 2 or 3 Divemaster trainees at the same time. If not, there are always other divers at the location. They are also very into diving and you will have lots of fun with them!

We suggest that you have at least $200 – $300 spending money a week for food, drink and personal expenses. Meals out are $5 – $30 depending on the restaurants. If you buy food and cook you can obviously live more cheaply.

The one unifying goal of people attending the camp to get fit or fitter and have a great time in a beautiful location doing something healthy. It combines ultra luxurious accommodation with world-class fitness training at incredible prices.

Arrival day Sunday: You will be met at the airport and taken to your accommodation by a Xtreme Gap representative. Settle in relax after a long flight and sleep well. The next day walk to the fitness boot camp located close by where you will have your introduction session.

You make your way to the reception of the training camp, and our rep will introduce you to the trainers, give you a training schedule and give you your vouchers for the meal plan (2 meals a day Monday to Saturday). The meal plan starts on the day of the introduction. You just need to go there in your training gear, shorts, sneakers, t-shirt and a towel and water. The water you can buy at the resort or the training camp.

On average there can be 50-100 people training at the camp, from all over the world and it is not unusual to be working out with professional athletes and fitness professionals. With so many people coming and training the camp, naturally, the latest fitness techniques are incorporated and developed in the training programmes. With just one month spent training at the Xtreme Gap Fitness Boot Camp, we can confidently state that you can develop so much further than six months with a personal trainer back home. Fitness results are really delivered.

Personal Training Session and Group Sessions.

Xtreme Gap Year BootcampOnce per week you will have a mentor session with a professional personal trainer,  and is well placed to advise nutrition, techniques and give you a roadmap during your stay to get the most out of your workouts.

As well as the personal training session, there are group training sessions, Monday to Saturday, with Gym access available seven days a week (But mostly Sunday is taken off for a well-deserved rest).

While there is plenty of training activities included, perhaps even more than most can handle, there is the option to book extra personal training sessions locally (Approx £45 per session), and you can even try other fitness activities like Muay Thai training (2 sessions a week are already included).

So what’s the catch? Well, nothing really, except you have to arrange your own flight to Thailand, you fly to Phuket which is very well connected internationally or via Bangkok and you need to make the effort in training of course! Not only do we offer great beach training classes but we also like to make sure you know all the best places for your daily runs, hikes and general relaxation.

The Beach Boot Camp days are legendary, and they are probably the toughest training sessions throughout the week. The reward is you get to jump in the crystal clear sea after a one-hour session!

Easy Arrival.

As most of our guest travel solo this really makes it easy when you arrive in Thailand for the first time. We recommend a Sunday arrival although we can be flexible (request trip notes for further details on the accommodation).

The Training Buddy List

Prior to arrival, you will have access to a facebook group of fellow bootcampers, so you will already know people at the camp and people arriving the same time as you. Makes integration even easier. It’s super supportive and a nice way to start. One of the best things about the camp is the atmosphere, most travel with us solo, so there is a very welcoming and social side to the camp.

Full Intro On Day One

On the first day of your training, our Xtreme Gap rep will give you a full introduction, introduce you to the trainers, show you around the camp and help you meet other Xtreme Gappers, and also talk you through the meal plan and training timetable (more on that below).

The rep is your first point of contact should you have any issues in Thailand. Perhaps you just want to know where to go to get your laundry done, where to have a good spa treatment or get the inside information on which restaurant has the best Thai red curry in town, all you have to do is ask. Everything is made really easy for you, allowing you to just focus on having a great time, getting fit and having a great holiday.

Also on the firts training day (Monday) there is an afternoon Nutricioun seminar. We gladly go over your goals and help you with your meal plan.

How long should you go for?

Most people go for 2 to 6 weeks, due to time constraints with work, and two weeks is enough to start to see some good results. The main benefit you will take home the knowledge of how to maintain and improve your fitness back home along with a solid foundation or fitness.

Of course, you also have had an amazing holiday in Thailand as well, and it is not that often you can say you’ve come back from holiday feeling better than when you left!

Set in a beautiful landscaped Thai gardens, you will find the uttermost peace and tranquillity, with two pools – (the pools are heaven after a training session), a restaurant and high-quality service.

  • The resort  (called the retreat) is 8 minutes walk to the training camp. There is a free shuttle service laid on to the training facility.

The Boutique Villas

Each private boutique villa comes with a large bed, air conditioning, flat screen TV/cable, DVD, WiFi internet, hot water en-suite shower and your own little outside veranda. The perfect place to relax after your day training, the outside communal lounge spaces are accompanied by easy sounds of fountains and birdsong surrounded by tropical plants. Heaven.

The resort has upgraded rooms available. These have a separate living and kitchenette. Consider this a suite. This accommodation option is perfect if you wish to work while you are training at the boot camp. There are a desk and a living area that could be perfect office terrain. The room has air conditioning, private bathroom, fridge, microwave, lounge area with a sofa, wifi and cable tv.

If your budget doesn’t stretch to the luxury options, we have now got standard ensuite accommodation. Set in another resort, you have a clean comfortable room with air conditioning, private bathroom, fridge, desk, wifi, cable tv. This modern resort hotel has free high-speed internet, a nice pool and clean and comfy ensuite rooms.

Early Morning

If you wish, you can start with a good stretch in the morning by joining the Yoga class for an hour before the ‘real’ work begins.

Boot Camp

The boot camp training consists of 6 days a week Mon-Sat high cardio (fat burning) in the morning, using highly advanced techniques (request trip notes for further details and videos about this). These classes vary from Strenght & Conditioning, Crosstraining, Bodyfit, Spinning and Boxercise. They are designed to increase your fitness fast and efficiently. The groups typically have people training with a moderate physical condition and peak physical condition; this works well as the exercises are modified depending on your fitness levels and ability, so no one is left behind. The indoor gym is open on Sundays for those who want to train on the day off.

Open Matt Sessions

The whole camp is at your disposal to do your own workout. Use all the equipment the camp offers like battle ropes, assault course, med ball, torsonater, Olympic weightlifting bars with plates you can drop and a bunch of free weights so you can do your WOD (Workout of the Day) by yourself or team up with some of the other xtreme gappers.

Olympic Weightlifting

The sport of Olympic Weightlifting involves participants completing two separate lifts; the snatch and the clean and jerk. In Olympic Weightlifting class you will learn how to perform these two lifts. Performing this type of exercises will help with increasing power, speed, flexibility and strength.

The class is recommended for those who have little or no experience with these lifts. Coaches will put a heavy emphasis on obtaining proper form and execution of these lifts before you start to really increase the weight used in these exercises.

Don’t let the term Olympic weightlifting put you off, this is a multi-purpose workout that will improve your whole body and the way it performs. Once perfected it will make other exercise much easier. Olympic Weightlifting also has a major Neurological benefit.

 S&C (strength and conditioning)

Strength and Conditioning at our bootcamp is more than just your average fitness class! You will learn the exercise techniques that will lay the foundation for future training and transform your athletic ability and the way to push yourself hard beyond your limits. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced athlete: this training system will develop power, endurance, speed, agility, core strength. It will enable you to become more flexible. Not only will you perform better and remain injury free, but resistance training is also scientifically proven to promote weight loss.

Strength and Conditioning sessions run Mon-Fri afternoons at 5pm so that you can make the most of the weather here and chill a bit by the pool in the afternoon. This is a very good time to train as the heat drops, and the wind picks up to cool the sweat off your body, this helps to keep you motivated while training.

To keep our Strength and Conditioning sessions interesting, we constantly vary the format and emphasize a range of resistance exercise techniques and equipment to ensure no session is ever repeated exactly. Class intensity will be high, with all exercises demonstrated by our expert coaches to ensure correct posture and form so that you get the best results.

Beach training

Two days a week we focus on recovery of the different musscle groups.

Shoulders: for strength, stability, and mobility of the rotator cuff along with the development of the supportive muscle groups for correcting imbalances of the anterior and posterior.

Core: for total spine support through strengthening and stabilizing the deep and external major core muscle groups along with spine mobility.

Hips: mobility and flexibility for improved ROM (range of motion) along with the development of the hip flexor muscle groups.
All to enhance movement, posture, and performance with your sport, fitness, health and wellbeing for longevity and injury prevention with your life and training.

Boxercise

Get fit without getting hit. Train and have fun and learn boxing technique without the fear of getting hurt or getting hit in the face:) We teach basic boxing technique and keeping the pace high to maximize calorie burn and keep the pace in the fat burning zone. We use boxing gloves and pads, which we provide in class for our clients. A different and fun class that we teach two times per week, Tuesday and Thursday 4-5pm.

Assault Course Class

Want to train different, want to learn how to use your body weight strength and run through Thailand’s biggest obstacle course? Then this is the class for you. Ex-Navy Seal coach will teach this class 3 times per week. He will break down the different and most efficient way to tackle the various stations to make your time better and better each time you run the course. The record is 1.52 min so that is what we are aiming for to beat:). This class is held Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4-5pm.

Spinning

We run spinning three times per week we have spinning class, Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.15pm. Tour the Thailand in one spot. We will also throw in some bodyweight exercises as well to mix it up. We are taking spinning classes to a new level, and it will be different to a normal spinning class, but we can assure you will love this!

Nutrition Seminar

Every Monday you can join our Nutrition Seminar. We discuss nutrition and how we should eat for a healthy lifestyle. We will guide you and make suggestions on what, how and when to eat so everyone is able to make their own meal plan on a generic basis.

Bodyfat Measurements

Not everyone at the camp is attending for weightloss.  So please note we do not incorporate body fat measurements using callipers as standard in the package. This is a service available locally on request for an additional small fee.

Yoga, Muay Thai Try It All

There are also options to join Yoga sessions taught by a highly qualified yoga instructor.

The Yoga groups first thing in the morning are perfect to warm up your muscles and get them ready for a hard session at body fit.

Muay Thai

This is not a Muay Thai training camp; we specialise in fitness. That being said if you want to try some Muay Thai we include 2 Muay Thai sessions a week. This is a complimentary service. (about 2 GBP for gear rental per session)

Set your own pace if you need to

The gym is open full-time Monday to Sunday (No group sessions on Sunday), you can train harder if you like, or explore Phuket and hit its stunning beaches with a body to match if you don ´t slack off!

Flights.

Flights are not included, and please do not book your flights before booking with us as we do need to reserve your spot, and make sure there is availability. Submit your booking form and we will come back to you within 24 hours to confirm. Once we have issued you your confirmation invoice you are then good to book your flights into Phuket.

When should you go?

Whenever you like! It starts every Sunday. In our experience, the cheapest time to fly is between mid-April and October. This is a traditionally low season. The price of the Boot Camp remains the same throughout the year however this can seriously affect the price of flights. So if you are on a budget consider coming during those months.

Travelling alone is no problem it’s a very social environment.

Titan Beach-2015181_1024x683As we mentioned most people who attend the camp, are independent travellers and arrive at the camp on their own. If you are concerned about travelling solo, don’t be. There is such a social atmosphere at the camp, and it is a supportive environment that everyone gets to know each other very quickly.

We set you up on our buddy list system before you go (to chat online with other people attending the camp, and we promise you will make really good new friends, (serious physical exercise in a group can be quite a bonding experience we assure you!)

So really it does not take long for people to get to know one another.

While two meals a day are included in the meal plan, you are free to have dinner where ever you like, which tends to be very social.

People come from all over to train at our camp, so expect to meet new friends from all over the world and actually broaden your horizons and extend your connections at the same time.

The fact that most people travel there alone, also adds to the motivation factor, because everyone is there to succeed in their fitness goals, so everyone encourages and pushes each other to do more.

Location & Activities.

Thai fitness bootcampYou can expect great weather, fabulous food and exciting environment. Lots of culture and exciting day trips to be had. The training camp is about a 10 min drive from the beach, (taxis are cheap) there are temples, spas, and numerous activities like elephant trekking, diving, snorkelling, trekking and you can even head out to Phi Phi for some to die for beaches.

You can’t go to Thailand without trying a Thai massage as well, and after a few days training you might just want one! There are ample spa facilities in the vicinity of your accommodation, so it is very easy to reward yourself with a bit of pampering after all of your hard efforts with your training.

Visas.

You can enter Thailand on a 28 day Visa exemption if arriving by air, so for our clients staying just four weeks or under there is no need to arrange a Visa. If you intend to stay longer, you will need to pre-arrange a Visa, after booking we can send you all the information you need to do this, and our partners can even take care of this for you.

Booking Process.

The booking process is relatively straightforward, but please note spaces to fill up so we advise booking well ahead, last-minute bookings can occasionally be taken, but we do need it least ten days notice. Having said that we can rarely guarantee you space if you book last-minute, so please contact us if you want to make a last-minute booking.

To book all you have to do is submit your booking form, we will then check availability and send you your confirmation invoice. You can take this to the bank to pay (no charge), or pay online to a UK account, or you can pay online with PayPal (there is a 5% charge for this option).

If you are travelling within 12 weeks, you will need to pay the full amount. If you are travelling later than 12 weeks you only need to secure your place with £200 deposit, then pay the balance 12 weeks before departure giving you plenty of time to save flights and spending money.

So for only £200, you can make a commitment to yourself to get fit and healthy, tone up and feel incredible you just need to submit your booking form. Don’t think too long about it, as spaces to fill up so get it in early.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions.

People come to the camp with lots of different personal fitness goals, men and women, super athletes and people seriously out of shape! While most people that join are of average fitness, none are by the time they leave, so depending on the time you have to devote to your body and personal health, the results can be impressive. Don ´t be surprised to find professional body builders rubbing shoulders with Pro athletes and people wanting to lose weight in a supportive training environment.
The average age of the participants is between 20 and 35, but there are quite some over 35 that train at the camp. There could be staying up to 100 people at the camp, so you will find like minded people for sure.
People join for 1 to 12 weeks. Some even stay up to 6 months! But even if you just have 10 days you are more then welcome to join and will notice the difference in your shape. Please note this is not your typical gap year programme, it can be undertaken by all, even on a short break to Thailand.

As a general rule everyone is different, but it depends on as much as the effort you put in when training, the techniques you use when training and the fuel you are putting in your body when you are training. The Fitness boot camp teaches you all these things and sets you on the right path to peak physical fitness.

Technique

One of the benefits of the camp is that you will be taught the proper techniques and exercises by experts (you would be amazed by how many people who do attend a gym, do an incorrect work out that is not effective and waste a lot of their time and energy, when these inefficient workout routines can be easily corrected with a little education). This is great because you will be able to take this home with you to continue once you are back from your trip.

Effort

Secondly, as there are lots of others training at the camp with the same fitness goals you will find that you end up pushing your efforts harder to reach your fitness goals. Why? Because everyone is there to support you, and it is a very encouraging atmosphere. The gym is always on your doorstep, and you are there to train, so there really is no excuse, especially when you have paid to attend the camp. There is no slacking off!

Fuel

Third, the meal plan is designed to help with weightloss and muscle mass gain. Lots of healthy, protein-rich and delicious food, of the Thai and Western variety.

It is incredibly easy to eat healthily here and we will cater to your nutritional requirements. You won’t see any processed foods here; it’s all freshly cooked and they use the best quality ingredients, it´s lean, clean and delicious. During your consultation, we will discuss and recommend the ideal nutrition plan to run alongside your training. In the programme 2 meals per day Mon-Sat is included.

So how long is the ideal time to go for? Hard to say, we would suggest people start seeing results in as little as the first week, but real visible results come after about 2-3 weeks of continuous training. Some people go for months and really make a dramatic transformation.

Tailored nutritional advice can be provided by personal trainers during your one to one with a lot of experience in providing the correct diet matching to your personal fitness goals. This is backed up by a specially designed healthy eating menu. If you need a more tailored personal nutrition plan, we are also able to provide one for you at extra cost. This will involve measuring your body fat and optimising your calorie intake to complement your training. Please ask us prior to booking about additional nutrition options.

 

The gym at the Thailand Fitness Bootcamp is brand-new for 2016. Includes all you need to work on strength and conditioning training: hammer strength benches, curl bench and bar, incline, squat rack, sit-up benches, 3 racks of dumbbells, stationary bikes, Nautilus machine with pull down, seated row, leg press, and 4 full sets of kettlebells which are highly regarded for hardcore weightlifting workouts and plenty of plate weights to accommodate several weight-lifters at same time. You have Unlimited access to the gym and there are always fitness trainers are able to advise you and guide you throughout your workouts.

 

At the training camp you are a 40 minutes taxi ride away from Phuket town and 40 minutes from the airport.

Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate. It is warm all year round, but the two periods of April-May and September-October are the hot months. The September-October period is also the wet. The best time to visit Phuket is during the cool monsoon season, from November through March. Then it isn’t so humid, and the cool breezes keep it comfortable. The average temperature is around 75F to 89F (24C to 32C).

The Thai new year is celebrated on the 13 and 14th of April! its an amazing event, waterfest!

We have classes at 11.00 and 19.00 (times can change) for the customers who do want to get in a bit of training. The missed out meals will be served before and after Songkran.

The beaches are about 6km from the camp. The best way to get there is by bike, scooter or taxi. There are always more people going on the weekends, so you can join each other. In the neighbourhood there are pools, and if you stay at our luxury resort you can chill by one of the two pools it offers!

Vegetarian and Vegan´s also have options at the restaurant. Not all the fun has been taken out of the menu, you can still get French fries made with unpeeled potatoes! Also included at the Restaurant for extra costs is our protein and fruit shake bar offering a wide variety of Fruit and protein shakes and a selection of drinks to keep our guests maintaining a high amount of protein in their diet to help build muscle and lose fat.

If you are thinking it might be a little intimidating arriving at a fitness boot camp, you will be pleasantly surprised. There is a great supportive atmosphere, where everyone has a similar goal, to benefit from improving their fitness and well-being. Also you will have a serious introduction by our representative who will help you settle in and introduce you to the trainers and team at the fitness camp. He will explain you about all different training sessions and the meal plan (also included!). There can be up to 100 people at the camp so do not worry about being arriving on your own!

The camp is quite remote and there are no tourist bars and big supermarkets in the neighbourhood. Also everyone you meet will be training and will be working on their health and fitness, so it is not hard not to go out, as everyone is focussed on getting fit! Also we include a meal plan. These 2 meals a day are very fresh and healthy and we also include water and fruit. The other meals you can order at our restaurant or you can eat out in one of the restaurants down the road, they all have a healthy menu!

If you are planning on travelling to Thailand for 30 days or less and you have British, Dutch & Nordic or USA passport you can get a Visa exemption on arrival. This is valid for 30 days and can be extended in Thailand on Phuket for 30 days more. The cost will be around 1900 THB. Or (easier and more organised) if you are planning on being in Thailand longer than 30 days you will need to pre-arrange a Visa. You can prearrange a visa for 60 days which you can extend to 90 days in Thailand.

There are two ways of arranging your visa. When you are from the UK. You can either go in person to the Thai embassy in London, or you can post your passport along with the necessary documentation and fee to one of the Thai Consulates. In general this works the same for the other countries like The Netherlands and United States too, but please contact the nearest Thai Consulate for visa inquiries.

Please note that you are responsible for arranging your own visa. Xtreme Gap cannot be held responsible if you fail to travel with the correct visa. So please check with your local embassy personally. The previous information is meant as a guide, but visa rules change often and frequently. So do not take this as the current law.

Varied Dive Sites

During your Divemaster training, you will discover a mix of hard and soft corals and abundant marine life from sharks to turtles and thousands of fish. The sites vary in depth from just a few meters down to 40 meters, there is little current and the water temperature is always warm, ranging from about 27C to 32C offering amazing conditions to dive every day of your Divemaster course!

For our Koh Tao Divemaster courses, we use the PADI training accreditation. PADI is widely considered to be one of the top dive training agencies in the dive industry.

Accommodation

Koh Tao Gap Year (2)A 2-minute walk from the beach you will find your beautiful new, safe and clean home from home.

Our accommodation is one of the few places on the island with a swimming pool, which in 30 degrees heat is a godsend after training. Your room, basic but spacious and comfortable, will have an en-suite and there is a maid service. There is a laundry service (approx £2.5 per big bag load) as well. Linen and towels are provided.

To train on the Koh Tao Divemaster course you will need to fill in a medical statement and pass a medical exam. You will definitely notice that your fitness levels improve significantly as you advance through the Koh Tao Divemaster course. Bear in mind that you will be swimming for up to 4 hours, this has a great impact on your fitness and health. However, before beginning the course you need to be reasonably fit and healthy. You will also need to pass a Divemaster swim
There are some jobs available like working in a bar. It might be difficult to find one. Besides that, the wages are really low in Thailand. For an entire night hard work in a bar you will earn up to £10
On Koh Tao there are around 70 dive schools. They all need Divemasters, so there are many opportunities. A job is not guaranteed, but very likely. It depends on your own hard work and how much you want it really. If you go for it 100% you will probably find a job as a Dive Master.
Yes, the Koh Tao Divemaster course is adaptable. For example, we can shorten your trip if you have existing qualifications when you start your  Divemaster course.

Going out for dinner is also a social event, you will discover that during the day everyone is training, and you meet in the evening for a nice Thai Curry somewhere. Fast & Easy Results – Our Boot Camp is effective at identifying ways of reaching health and fitness goals in a faster way. Left to your own devices you might struggle to get there at all and classes or sessions which repeat one style of exercise might not deliver the right results on time either. This gives you the time and effort to focus on your fitness goals.

Fantastic facilities: It’s not all hard work! In your free time, you’ll relax beside the pool in our  resort, treat your tired muscles to massages and enjoy the luxury of someone else doing the cooking for a change. Over the weekend, you’ll have free time to explore the beaches and rice fields of beautiful Bali. Very different from training in your normal gym in the home.

Dynamic workout -Many people lose focus and motivation because they get bored. The whole point of Boot Camp is that it is as diverse as it is intense. If you add in the fact that you will be progressing and changing along the way, then you have an interesting exercise mix that should keep you engaged enough to realise your exercise goals.

Like-minded training buddies -Some people take up activities for the social scene, others because they are firmly fixed on a goal. Weekly  Personalised Training Sessions 1 time a week – These sessions an opportunity to monitor your progress, and to guide your fitness regime so that you arrive at your desired goals. During these sessions, you can develop the ideal schedule, diet and supplement plan working closely with a train in a small group of training buddies. (Max 2-1 student trainer ratio). With our constantly varied programming, you will rarely do the same workout. You will never have to programme your workouts or spend hours in the gym. Instead, each day a workout will be provided for you that is scalable to suit your fitness level.

Training consists of cross fit classes, body 360 (hi cardio excellent for weight loss), yoga (5 sessions a week!), Barbell work outs and beach work outs and beach runs.

 

Accommodation Options

At the Xtreme Gap Fitness Bootcamp relaxation is just as important as the training.

bali-fit02The training can take it out of you, so to relax after a hard session you stay in comfortable accommodation with a stunning pool, and your own deluxe room or shared room in our stunning Fitness Villa with  pool and roof top jacuzzi over looking the ocean. Both super close to a stunning beach. Here you have the perfect blend of healthy fitness workouts and complete relaxation at the end of the day.

Shared Villa

Right by the ocean and on campus is our beautiful massive villa! Boasting pool and Jacuzzi, chill out areas with views of the ocean and a warm friendly welcome this will be your home during your stay.

The perfect set up to relax, meet other bootcampers and feel right at home. This is the social hub of the bootcamp but also large and private enough to have important relax and down time.

The sleeping arrangements are based on airconditioned, shared ensuite mini dorms with max. 2 – 4 persons (mixed gender).  Airconditioning operates from 7 pm to 7 am ensuring you get a comfortable nights sleep. During the day the villa benefits from an ocean breeze and plunge pools to cool you off after training. This is a communal set up so can be quite social and great to meet people.

If the idea of sharing is not your thing consider it is just for sleeping and you will be tired in the evening for sure! Beds are equipped with the highest quality luxury mattresses and there is plenty of space in the villa to relax. We are located right by the beach as well.

We have large screen TVs, movie projector and a huge library of DVDs for chilling in the evening.

The Luxury Deluxe Option

If you do not wish to share and would like even more luxury, your fitness training will be complemented perfectly by a stay in our beautiful deluxe hotel option. Located right next to the best beach in Bali, you can relax in between training sessions on the white sands of Jimbaran, or at the stunning pool of the hotel. The luxury deluxe option is located 5-minute walk to the training camp and is the epitome of luxury. This exclusive resort is brand new in 2016 and caters to those with higher budgets.

Complete with stunning pool and roof top lounge with unrivaled views of Jimberan bay it is a lovely place to stay if you can afford the extra expense.

The Surrounding Area

Our stunning bootcamp is set in an exclusive quieter area of Bali called Jimberan. The perfect beach with views stunning rollers, its the perfect location for a mental and physical reset. You can also venture down to the traditional markets, enjoy fine dining with a selection of lovely restaurants or sunbathe on a white sandy beach. The beach and the hotel are separated by a road, and along the road, there are local Seafood Cafés.

The location is rewarded by some of the best sunsets in Bali, with temples and plenty of points of interest nearby.

If salt water is not your thing we have two beautiful swimming pools in the resort. But it’s close to everything else as well, so you have plenty of opportunities to go explore. Taxis are cheap in Bali, and there are plenty of areas of interest you to visit including temples, resorts, beaches and areas of cultural interest. Day trips can be booked through our Bali team.

Location

It’s a really nice location because it’s not too touristy. The village itself used to be a fishing village and is located in a huge white sandy bay. Every morning you can still take a stroll down to the beach and see the fishermen returning with their fresh catch. It’s now a great location to be based for fitness activities. With the establishment of our Boot Camp, plus the huge array of water sports available to you ( surfing, stand up paddle) it’s quite a good place to be to combine relaxation and getting active.

In the evenings you will be rewarded with the most beautiful sunsets, plus there are plenty of beachside restaurants to sip on a cold fruit shake and watch traditional Balinese dancing shows and hundreds of fire lanterns drifting into the night sky.

This is not the location to be at if you’re expecting lots of nightlife, although this is available in Kuta just 20 minutes away, the priorities of people training in our Boot Camp is about fitness, weight loss and strength and conditioning training, morning start early and people are usually in bed before 10.

The bootcamp is located conveniently place between Bali’s tourist hotspots. When you are not training, it’s easy to get out and explore. You are only 20 Minutes to Kuta, 35 minutes to Nusa Dua, 35 minutes to Sanur, 35 minutes to Denpasar City.

Excursions

Every week we head out with the new arrivals to the jaw-dropping Uluwatu temple, perched on the southern cliff face of Bali, home to hundreds of cheeky monkeys!

Then after we drive to Padang Padang beach for a swim and to catch the sunset. A world famous surf break, beach access is through a cave revealing golden sands and impressive sunset views.

We provide the transport during the excursion (you sign up to them at the villa) but please note there is a very small local payment to access Uluwatu Temple and Padang Padang (about £2.50 per attraction).

The great thing about the fitness Boot Camp is that you can take time out of your hectic schedule to do something that is really ideal for your well-being, and you know you will be supported every step of the way.

It is not just about the training sessions, it is about doing it in a group atmosphere, seeing improvements as the days go by with your new training buddies.

What can the Bali Fitness Boot Camp do for you?

Everyone is different, with different goals. Some people are really unfit others have a good base level of fitness, either way, you will benefit from spending some time training here and you will see remarkable improvements.

You will be impressed by what you can achieve

It is a really motivating environment. The majority of people at the camp travel there on their own which leads to a really social and supportive atmosphere because everyone has there  with the same goal.

When this is coupled with superb trainers, scheduled classes and all the equipment you could need, there really is nothing stopping you. You will be amazed by what you can achieve, because with group training sessions slacking off is less of an option, and the training is quite addictive once you get into it.

We have had clients who have gone from 1 week to 8 weeks, and the feedback is consistently excellent. With a varied and flexible training timetable, morning and evening you will not be bored.

The Training

With an impressive roster of trainers, we are continually improving our fitness routines incorporating the latest Crossfit methods and techniques. At the Xtreme Bali fitness Bootcamp, we use high-intensity cross fit training to develop strength fitness and flexibility.

With so many people coming and training the camp, naturally, the latest fitness techniques are incorporated and developed in the training programmes. With just one month spent training at the Xtreme Gap fitness Boot Camp, we can confidently state that you can develop so much further than six months with a personal trainer back home.

During the first couple of sessions, you will be enrolled on a lighter version of the training programme. This is to ensure you can get up to speed and benefit the most out of the workouts.

The Bali Fitness Bootcamp Training Schedule

The majority of the training program is focused on Cross fit. Cross fit uses functional movements to deliver explosive workout sessions. Due to the intensity of these sessions, it can be quite strenuous on your body so we include a lot of rest time and more low-intensity activities to help your body recover and rebuild in between sessions.

Typically the timetable consists of two group Cross fit training sessions lasting one hour each per day plus a full six hours of open gym access to you to work on your own training plan as devised by your personal trainer.

On Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays session start early morning before the tropical heat and humidity builds up at 6 AM. If you have the endurance to push through you can have the option of doing a double training session on these days completing another one at 7 AM. Tuesdays and Thursdays training starts at 7AM.

There is a further cross fit session at 5 PM if you miss the morning session or want to split your training between mornings and afternoons.

Body Fit
Body Fit is every Tuesday and Thursday at 9am. This class consists of light weight and bodyweight movements programed to get your heart rate up and sustained throughout a longer working periods. Great for fat loss, toning, firming, and overall endurance.

Barbell Club
This class is all about strength gains, mobility, and coordination. Olympic weightlifting is one of the most athletic sports around demanding many things from your body. If you want to work on your strength capacity, flexibility, and coordination, this class is for you.

PT Sessions (Included on Standard Options)

Your personalized training sessions happen 1 time per week during the open gym access. This is your opportunity to discuss with your dedicated trainer your own particular goals, set your workouts and come up with a structured plan for you to work on. One personalized training session per week is sufficient for most clients, however, if you want to book extra this is also possible at £40per session. The PT sessions are delivered with a max. 2-1 student to trainer ratio although usually these are 1-1.

Surf Lesson

We include one surf lesson per stay. As you may know, Bali is the quintessential surf location, and with great views of airport right (one of the top surf spots in the world) live and direct from our roof terrace, you will be tempted to hit the surf!

We will pick you up with the rest of the group and take you to a Surf lesson at a different location. You get to see more of Bali and experience surfing at the same time!

5 Yoga sessions per week are also included in the programme (3 on the lean). As well as a multitude of sports you can join (not obligatory) like beach volleyball, Stand Up Paddle, basketball and a football pitch at our own sports facilities.

The Training Facilities

The training facilities are arguably some of the best in Bali. A substantial training facility that can accommodate up to 80 clients at one time. Not only do we have a fully functioning CrossFit area, plus resistance weights and an impressive stock of weights and machines. We also have recreational activities like volleyball, basketball and the soccer field as well.

Occasionally we hold conferences on health and fitness with guest speakers in the lecturing facilities there, although this is usually a special one-off event and not included in a typical package per se.

 

Nutrition Programme (Excluded on Lean Option)

Training hard and efficiently is only one factor that goes into delivering great results. What you put into your body is arguably even more important. One of the great things about the Bali fitness bootcamp, is we include a unique nutrition programme to really complement your fitness training goals. Our international team of French, New Zealand and Indonesian nutritionists have created a delicious healthy eating menu giving your clean healthy food for your Lunch options.

Note: 2 meals per day (excluding Sunday your well-deserved day off) are included. You will receive a buffet breakfast in the morning consisting of tasty  energy supplying oats, fresh fruit, boiled eggs, tea and coffee. If you have not booked the “lean option” you also get a  protein shake.

You then have the choice of taking lunch at the Villa (included) with multiple options from a healthy eating menu.

Our meal plan is designed with different fitness goals in mind. If you are looking to bulk up and gain muscle mass you may need to purchase additional meals or protein, to reach your desired calorific intake.

Why do we not include all meals? 

It makes it more social. Jimbaran is a spectacular location with many cheap and stunning restaurants in the local area. Many set up right on the beach. With the option of having dinner outside of the villa, you can enjoy the social scene with your fellow bootcampers, by going out to dinner. Taking all meals in the villa you would genuinely miss out.

If you would prefer to take both lunch and dinner in the villa, or don’t fancy venturing out you can purchase an additional meal healthy meal from reception each day. The cost for this is about £5 per meal.

Lunch is served from 12.30 (and dinner if you like to order the extra meal as well around 6 PM). You can take this on our spectacular roof terrace. Meaning you can get back from training, shower and enjoy a beautiful Balinese sunset before sitting down to dinner with your fellow bootcampers, in the villa or out locally. Fun, super social and easy!

Here are some foundational facts about our meal plan.

  • Everything we use in our products are natural wholesome ingredients – we don’t ever use preservatives, artificial products, or MSG
  • We season using organic palm sugar and natural Bali sea salt
  • We source top-notch meat which are slow-cooked to get that juicy tenderness
  • Our vegetables come direct from Bedugul farms to our kitchen which means they travel through a short distance which equals max nutrients in your body.
  • Foods are immediately prepped & cooked on the day. When it arrives on your table, it’ll taste as if you cooked a healthy balanced meal yourself!
  • Please note you receive 6 lunch meals per week, if you skip one or choose to eat elsewhere the meals are not transferable to a later date.

RENDANG ROOTS

Generations-old family recipe of traditional Indonesian beef Rendang with a healthy twist – slow cooked beef marinated in coconut milk & Balinese spices with crushed root vegetables on the side.

Getting To Training Sessions

While you are there to train, no one is going to get you out of bed to attend classes. You need to make your own way to the fitness classes every day. Not a problem however as the training facilities are located right next door to the accommodation.

On Arrival

On arrival in Denpasar, we will pick you up at the airport and transfer you to your accommodation. The journey is short approximately 15 Minutes to the International Airport. We recommend a Sunday arrival although we can be flexible.

On the first day of your training, our Xtreme Gap rep will give you a full introduction, introduce you to the trainers, show you around the camp and talk you through the training timetable.

Everything is made really easy for you, allowing you to just focus on having a great time, getting fit and having a really great holiday.

Early Arrival

If you arrive a day early, accommodation is not included. Check in is only on Sunday. Airport pick up is included, all day at anytime but only on Sunday. If you arrive early you have to arrange your own transfer to the accommodation.

How long should you go for?

We recommend you join us for four weeks at the Bali fitness bootcamp to get the most out of your time. Many people are constrained by how much time they have off work so most people go for two weeks. You can get a 30 day Visa for Bali fairly easily, if you wish to stay up to 8 weeks you will need to extend your Visa.

If you are looking to go really long-term and see drastic improvements, we recommend splitting your time between here and our Thailand fitness bootcamp, or focusing on the Thailand fitness bootcamp due to the ease of securing longer-term visas.

The main benefit you will take home is the knowledge gained of how to maintain and improve your fitness back home along with a solid foundation or fitness.

Of course, you also have had a fantastic holiday in Bali as well and it is not that often you can say you’ve come back from holiday feeling better than when you left!

Short-term guests will receive an amazing kick start to their health and fitness routine. Many who travel with us use this as a kick start to their travels as well, after all, if you are hitting the beaches in Bali, you want to look and feel good!

Visas

The maximum amount of time you can join is eight weeks. We are limited by the Visa limitations, you are able in most cases to get a 30 day Visa on arrival and extend this to 60. Please note this advice is subject to change so you should do your own research into visas as well.

Flights

Flights are not included, and please do not book your flights before booking with us as we do need to reserve your spot, and make sure there is availability. Submit your booking form and we will come back to you within 24 hours to confirm. Once we have issued you your confirmation invoice you are then good to book your flights to Denpasar, Bali.

Travelling alone

Most people who attend the camp, are independent travelers and arrive at the camp on their own. If you are concerned about traveling solo, don’t be. There is such a social atmosphere at the camp, and it is a really supportive environment that everyone gets to know each other very quickly. Serious physical exercise in a group can be quite a bonding experience we assure you! So really it does not take long for people to get to know one another. 90 percent of people joining the boot camp travel solo.

Frequently Asked Questions

The camp is located in Jimbaran right by the beach. This is located on a massive Bay with a white sandy beach, 15 minutes from the airport. It’s away from the typically touristy areas and a little bit quieter which is more conducive to fitness training and relaxation. Yet at the same time, it is easily accessible to some of the hotspots and more lively areas. 

You will need to fly into Bali Denpasar International Airport. After booking, you are asked to provide your flight details and we will meet you in arrivals outside of the airport. We will then transfer you to your accommodation by taxi. 

Early arrival is fine and we can recommend a few great options for accommodation. Please note that if you are not arriving on your start day, airport collection is not included, but a taxi from the airport to a nearby hotel is usually about 10GBP

Return airport transfer can be arranged with the reception of the resort. The cost will be around £10. 

Please bring suitable training gear such as trainers, a couple of pairs of shorts, sports bras for the girls, and training tops. We advise bringing a towel as well to take to the gym and also a beach towel. Please bring a padlock for your locker. 

This depends on your own spending choices, but as 2 meals (breakfast and lunch) are  covered per day you will not need to bring much. Meals are not included on Sundays.

You only need to cover one meal a day,  your external excursions and activities. Bali is very good value, but you will want to budget spending money to go on a couple of tours, and the transportation to take you to other areas of the island. We would recommend £100 £150 per week. 

You can bring supplements with you please make sure these are clearly labelled, but you can also buy them locally at the camp. 

We have a Halal lunch menu at the moment of writing they are: Vegetable Curry, hearty Lamb Moussaka, Thai Green Curry, Chili Con Carne, Salmon Ratatouille, Cauliflower & Chicken Soup, Broccoli & Zucchini Soup. 

Yes Everything is gluten free, dairy free, and wheat free except for 1 dish: Lamb Moustaka. However, this dish only has a minor amount as well.

Scooters are widely available for hire, however, we do not recommend people hire them. Traffic conditions are crazy in Bali, and it is not uncommon for people to have very serious accidents on scooters. We will take no responsibility for any accidents or damage that occurs from clients renting scooters. Taxis are cheap and easy to arrange so we would advise that. All of the resorts are within walking distance of the training area. 

Are widely accepted. The nearest ATM is approx 200 meters from the Villa. 

Plenty. Beaches, incredible beach clubs, amazing viewpoints, waterfalls, rice fields and lookouts. There are a range of tours you can do, like visiting monkey temples, rice paddies and Hindu temples. 

Yes! 90% of our clients join the boot camp on their own. In fact far from this being a problem, we would encourage people to do so. It’s a very social environment at the camp and you will make friends very quickly. 

Typically we provide a 12 1/2% discount based on two people sharing deluxe accommodation. There is no discount for the shared villa. 

Probably 70% female30% male. Both sexes will have different goals and motivations about booking the camp as well. With women, usually it’s about toning up, weight loss and body confidence.

With men, it’s more about strength and conditioning training but not exclusively. Really  there are people who join for all reasons. The important thing to consider is everyone is catered for at the Boot Camp, and people’s goals might change throughout your stay. 

Vegetarian also have limited options for the meal plan, and a limited Vegan (2 options for Vegans)

The beach is about 1 minute from the camp. 

High season is the dry season. Between April and September Bali is typically busier than usual. While temperatures are pretty constant all year round, it’s rainfall that can make the difference between the months.

The rainy season, which usually falls between December and Jan you can expect downpours happening mainly at night. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be constantly raining all the time, you can have some heavy rains, and then it is sunny again. It’s also cooler to train during the rainy season. Can be more humid, however, the training facility is air-conditioned and the rooms are also airconditioned at night time. The boot camp runs all year, come rain or shine anyway. 

Due to the nature of the Boot Camp, we are often asked “what kind of results will I see”. This is actually an impossible question to answer because everyone is different. People have different metabolisms, and ultimately it is down to how hard you work, and how long you stay for. We are confident you will definitely see an improvement, even if you go short-term you will be set on the right path, and given a good foundation to continue your training back home. You will learn all of the tools and techniques you need in order to continue to improve. 

You do not have to attend classes. No one will make you get out of bed to come training. But you will find it’s very addictive, and most clients have no issue making it to class.

On average people train 2 to 3 hours per day. You have a good mix between group cross fit training sessions, and individual personal training sessions. When you are not training you also can join stand up paddle too (local payment)! 

Yes, people can book extra additional personal training sessions locally. 1 is included per week as standard, and this is usually enough for most people considering all the group training involved as well. 

Wifi is available in the Fitness Villa, and yes the Deluxe hotel accommodation has free wifi too. Occassionally there are power outages that may effect coverage temporarily.

Yes absolutely, we have a range of really exciting trips in Bali which you can easily bolt onto the beginning or end of this programme. For example, our Bali backpacker experience, will give you a good overview of the island and even take you to the Gili Islands. Alternatively, we have some surf trips which you can easily add on at the end of this programme. 

Unfortunately, due to limited availability in the villa it is not possible to upgrade from shared villa to to deluxe after booking if you are travelling with in 12 weeks. 

At peak times you might have a max of 3 other room mates. Usually this is less and we manage room allocation to keep the number of room mates to a minimum. Due to us managing bookings in advance it is not possible to move beds or rooms without prior agreement from reservations. If you do not feel comfortable sharing we offer the deluxe option with your own private room in a luxury hotel.

Bali is a deeply spiritual island and there are plenty of national holidays and local ceremonies which can affect training schedules. The main ceremony happening once per year is Neypi when the whole island goes on lockdown for 2 days. Please note, no businesses are allowed to operate during this time, so we lay on additional training sessions, and arrange other activities to compensate. If your training period does coincide with a national holiday, though, it can be a great way to experience the local culture. The festivals and events, in general, tend to be quite fun, and it’s a great way to learn more about Balinese culture and get involved with the locals.

The 3 week Itinerary

First Week

Day 1, Arrival Day

Arriving on Sunday or start your adventure in the all some ancient capital of North Vietnam Hanoi. This is it! The beginning of your 3-week adventure that is full of excitement, culture, history, a road trip and great times with new friends. With an airport pick up included you settle into your accommodation in Hanoi, you´ll get a chance to meet up with your fellow backpackers and find out about everyone you´ll be spending the next few weeks with.

Most people on our Vietnam Experience are in the same boat, i.e. they are travelling solo, so there is no need to be nervous. You´ll be far too busy to worry about that!

Day 2 Hanoi old quarter

Xtreme Gap Vietnam experienceTo new visitors, Hanoi is a fantastic city bustling with crazy drivers, overloaded bicycles, colourful markets and street food stalls selling local dishes, some of which aren´t always identifiable (and yes, they are partial to chomping on a bit of Fido!).

Luckily you have a guide to help you through that initial culture shock, allowing you to absorb it with a bit of help. You´ll visit the 12th century Temple of Literature, see a local music performance and have lunch in the Old Quarter when your guide will take the opportunity to tell you all about what the next four weeks has in store. In the evening, you´ll have dinner and see a performance at the world famous water puppet theatre.

By the end of today, the sensory overload will either have you sleeping like a log or wide awake with wonder! Check out this gallery on our blog for more photos!

Day 3

Halong BayToday we are heading to Halong City gateway to the world heritage site of Halong Bay.

Halong Bay, which means ´Bay of the Descending Dragon´, is approximately 170km north of Hanoi and is famous for its surreal and somewhat eerie landscape of over 3000 limestone monoliths that rise imposingly from the ocean.

Just make sure that you get those all important emails addresses from your trip mates so that you can swap photos and keep each other up-to-date with any more adventures you do. Believe us, this trip will leave you wanting more. There is no vaccination for the travel bug!!

Day 4 and 5

Vietnam is full of epic landscapes, Giao Xuan is a stunning little village that will not disappoint. Today we’ll learn everything there is to know about Vietnamese culture. You will be learning some basic trying your hand Vietnamese cooking, and we will even take you to a local market where you can haggle for some ingredients for a major feast later that day.

Day 6 Quintessential Vietnam paddy fields caves and temples

Vietnam gap yearToday involves a relaxing boat trip around Tam Coc and Dinh Cac Pier, which has a stunning landscape of towering karst islets and vast expanses of paddy fields. You´ll also float through three impressive natural caves, which is what the name Tam Coc means, ´three caves´. This whole area epitomizes rural Vietnam, and you´ll want to make sure your camera is charged.

After lunch, you can cycle to the village and onto Thai Vi Temple and Bich Dong Pagoda, which dates back to 1428 and is located on Ngu Nhac Mountain.

Day 7 and 8 (Sat & Sun)

Its weekend! You have a couple of days ´off´ at this point in the trip – that is you are free to explore at your own pace and see what you and your adventuring friends can find. Meet up in the evenings and swap stories and photos with the whole group, while soaking up the atmosphere and thinking about everything you’ve seen and done so far. Typically the groups head out to Cuc Phuong National Park, the picturesque waterfall, and temples of the 11th c former capital, Hoa Lu. Our guides can offer you advise on what’s best to see in the area.

Second Week:

Day 9 (Mon) Sapa

A local village, hill tribes and beautiful scenery are on the agenda today. Cat Cat Village is about 1km from Sapa, located at the bottom of the Muong Hoa Valley and as you walk there you´ll see the breathtaking mountains, over 3000m high, and the green rice terraces that drop almost 1000m below. You´ll also pass the sparkling Cat Cat waterfall. The village itself is home to the H´Mong tribe, who retain many of the old customs and traditions, some of which you can see, such as hand weaving and dying of materials to make textiles. Have you still got room for souvenirs?!

Locals and villages

We hope you´re feeling well rested for today as there is a 10km trek through the hills, past the streams and into the valley of Muong Hoa to visit Ta Van village, where you’ll stay overnight with a local family. This gives you the chance to experience firsthand the lifestyle and culture of the people living in this area. After the long trek, the pool is bound to look appealing to soothe those aching muscles! You also have the chance to pitch in and help to cook dinner (you might even get to use some of the skills you learnt in your cookery class) before settling down for a peaceful night with your local hosts.

Day 10 (Tue) trekking
Bring your trekking boots because we are going on an epic journey. 10 hours of trekking through hills, paddy fields and classic Asian scenery until we hit Ta Van village. Take a dip in the pool there because you have deserved it.

Day 11 (Wed) Waterfalls and landscapes and trekking

You´ll have been glad for a peaceful night as today is an amazing seven hour round trip trekking to a waterfall and passing through some stunning landscapes along the way something that you´ll probably be getting used to now, given how beautiful the country is. Anyway, you´re young and fit so no slacking, you can handle it!

Day 12 (Thu) Sapa

Back to Sapa and a well earned rest. Kick back and sip a 666 Vietnamese beer. Super cheap and very tasty!

Sapa town

Sapa  is perfect for a well-earned rest. You´re more than halfway through your adventure so you can sit back, chill out and reflect on all the places you’ve been, things you see and people you´ve met so far. We reckon by this point you´ll realize this is one of the best things you’ve ever done!

If you are up for it check out the beautiful orchid gardens on the Ham Rong Mountain. Located in Sapa town, you don´t have far to travel to admire the panoramic views, gardens and unusual rock formations. It is well worth the effort of walking to the top as once you get there, and along the way, you´ll be rewarded with some great photo opportunities.

Day 13 (Fri) Market

Today you’ll visit the beautiful local market and beautiful old Sapa church in the morning.  You’ll have free time for the rest of the day until your bus back to Hanoi.

 

Day 14 and 15 (Sat & Sun) Hanoi craziness free time

Yes weekend again :). You’ve had quite a number of days admiring the beautiful Vietnam countryside and now it´s back to crazy Hanoi. You have a couple of days to explore more of the city, after which time you can decide whether you love it or hate it, it´s a bit like Marmite! Your guide will be able to give you the lowdown on the best places to visit and where to eat and drink.

You then have two days to explore the incredible city of Hanoi – our guides can give you some great suggestions of places to go, although often the group will have their own ideas there is only things you can see and do it will be hard to cram it all in. Stock up on snacks and charge your smartphone batteries because the following night you will be doing a very long bus trip which takes us to Hoi an.

Third Week 3: Days 16 – 21

Day 16 Hoi An is awesome

You will arrival to Hoi An in the afternoon and have time to visit Hoi An Old Quarter.  It has a distinctly French colonial flare, and it’s also an awesome place to get any type of clothing tailor-made for you!

You could spend time exploring the town and its many alleyways of cute shops, cafes and extensive food market or maybe hire a scooter and head out to the gorgeous local beaches.

Day 17 Ancient Ruins

You will visit the ancient ruins of the Cham dynasty in My Son. Ancient ruined temples two massive towers a really special place.

We will join the bus to transfer to Nha Trang tonight.

Day 18 & 19 Beach time

Na Trang has fantastic beaches and great nightlife. Nha Trang’s golden beaches are yours for the taking, alternatively, take a boat trip to nearby islands or sample sumptuous seafood.

Day 20 Saigon/ Ho Chi Minh

It’s been a huge epic journey but finally, we’ve made it to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Sai Gon)! Arguably one of the most beautiful cities in Vietnam, it has a distinctively different feel to Hanoi.

Day 21 (Sat) Saying goodbyes

On day 24 you will stay in Sai Gon where it will be time to say goodbye to your travel buddies. Lifelong friendships will have been formed, incredible time is had by all, in a truly stunning country. At the end of an amazing trip before continuing with your onward travels

Meals

Only breakfast is included throughout the programme. But you can get a nice (and cheap) meal on every corner of every street. Meals are about 1 to 3 GBP per meal.

Vietnamese meals consist of rice or noodles accompanied by fish or meat and a vegetable dish or soup. But in many places, you can also get Western food like pizza!

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

The winter months are December, January and February. It can be quite cold as you also go up to the north is Sapa, which is in the mountains. In January, there is no start date but in December there is. Be aware that you can not sunbathe.
Vietnam is a very safe country to travel in. You will also have a co-ordinator with you at all times.

No! You can get away with taking about 100 per week, and that will go a long way! A beer on the street in Hanoi is about 7p.

If one word sums up what it is like to be a Kite surfer that word would have to be freedom. When you are hooked into a power kite on the open water with wind propelling you at great speeds it’s an amazing feeling.

Then combine the ability to jump, and use the power of the kite to give you amazing hang time you can pretty much fly as well. Kite surfing is like skiing or snowboarding, but more forgiving. But there’s a lot of skill involved in being able to master the moves.

Fortunately, it’s not difficult it just takes practice, a little bit of ability and the right instruction. Mostly it takes an opportunity because it’s weather dependent you need the ability to jump in the water as soon as the wind is on. This is what this course gives you. Located right by the sea, weather permitting you can go kiting every day, improve your kite surfing ability and come home with an amazing new addiction.

Be warned though, kite surfing is a lifestyle. Once you have the bug, nothing will be the same. You will crave the wind like you are possessed. Because with the wind, comes the ability to at least something so fun, it will make good days great days.

It’s not every day that you get the opportunity to become really good at something. But given enough time, and the opportunity to do so, perfecting a skill is an awesome achievement. Apply this to kite surfing and you got the ingredients for something amazing.

The Lifestyle

This is not just a Kite Surf course. Yes of course is fantastic instruction, and there’s more on that below, but signing up to this program is investing in your summer.

The location of the kitesurf camp is unrivaled. You will live right by the sea, 10 m from the beach, 50 m from the kitesurf channel. That gives you the ability to go kite surfing every day. And should the wind not come in, you can go and explore the bay on stand-up paddles. The kite surf house is located in a national park, in a truly beautiful location.

The sandy shallow bay of Pollenca, stretches out in front of the house. It’s a large bay, with aquamarine water which is quite shallow for several hundred meters providing the perfect conditions to learn to Kite Surf.  The water is warm, and the views are stunning. Dramatic mountains stretch to the north, and Majorca’s best beaches are within a short distance from where you are staying.

In the evenings you are a short walk from the bars and restaurants of Port of Pollenca town  See can go and hit the nightlife with your fellow kite surfers. If a full day on the water has knackered you out, we have an amazing chillout area on the roof of the beach health. A huge kite surf viewing platform by day, chillout zone and outdoor cinema by night!

Accommodation

Xtreme Gap Year has a beach house in Majorca, where we run this kite surf programme. You will stay in a shared apartment right by the beach in a beautiful National Park. Based on Twin share.

ACCOMMODATION

The Shared Villa

Most people opt for the standard shared villa option. based on twin share dorms. The villa is located right next to the training areas, so rolling out of bed is easy.

It is also a haven of relaxation when you are not training. Equipped with a rooftop terrace with views of the ocean.

Kiting together and living together is a very bonding experience, it’s a great way to make friends. Don’t worry about needing your own space also. The villa is sufficiently big with plenty of chillout areas for you to catch some quiet time to.

Due to the nature of the Kite Boot Camp, people do not tend to have late-night the villa. You will be exhausted! So you can expect to get a good nights sleep in fan cooled rooms.

Itinerary

Sunday Arrival Day.

Arriving into Palma de Mallorca the transfer to the local town of Alcudia takes approximately one hour on the A32 bus service (direct from the airport). A member of our friendly team will be waiting to meet you off the bus and transfer you to the beach house on arrival. You can arrive at any time on Sunday and check in after 2pm. After checking in, you are free to chill at the villa, hit the beach, or do some stand-up paddle. A group orientation and introduction and getting to know you session will take place at 5 o’clock at the UF villa.

Monday Intro Day & Start Training

As with most days we start off with an early morning sun rise yoga session to stretch your muscles. Sessions take place on the roof terrace overlooking the ocean, National Park and Sierra Tramontana mountain range.

Then time for a healthy breakfast consisting of fruit, yoghurt, smoothie options, muesli, and eggs. Breakfast is served from 830 to 915 on the roof terrace.

Stand Up Paddle

Depending on the water conditions we have a daily stand-up paddle session. The bay of Pollenca has crystal calm flat water in the morning and is the perfect place to do some stand-up paddle due to it being relatively shallow and exceptionally beautiful. The thermal wind doesn’t tend to kick in until around 1 o’clock that’s great to start your mornings by getting out on the water when it calm and serene.

Buffet style healthy lunch served on the roof terrace or in the garden. Stock up on your carbs as you’re going to be burning a lot of energy on the water.

Kite Surfing

And it’s on! Thermal wind kicks in pretty much every single day in the summer which means you can be out on the water most days. If you have never learnt to kite surf before, you will have a nine-hour in water course spread out over a couple of days. After that it’s all about practice so you will be out riding on the water improving your kite surf abilities.

Kiting takes place right in front of the villa we are merely a couple of metres away from the launch point.

Excursions:

Every Wednsday and Thursday we take excursions which you are welcome to join.

For example on Wednesday there is an excursion to the beautiful Roman town of Pollenca where you can visit a local market.

On Friday afternoons you have the opportunity to do a nature trek, this lasts approximately 2 ½ hours taking you through a beautiful valley, down to a secluded beach.

Saturday
Early risers are able to enjoy a beautiful sunrise SUP session, or perhaps you may prefer a lie in. After a healthy breakfast at 8:30 AM on Saturday, it’s excursion day!

There are a range of options for excursions depending on the preference of the group. Some of these excursions are free and others incur a local charge:

  • Speed boat hire: (Minimum for persons 100 EUR per person) includes captain, fuel and boat hire 4 hours)
  • Formentor Beach we catch a glass bottom boat across to one of the most beautiful beaches. The journey takes 25 minutes Puerto Pollensa to Formentor the views of the bay along the way are impressive. You can get a closer look at the lighthouse at Cap de Formentor and La Fortaleza, one of Spain’s most impressive estates featured in the bbcs night manager. It is an open ticket, so you can choose the timetable you prefer to come back, so the choice of options is flexible and you are not in a rush.
  • Formentor look out. Head up to a beautiful world heritage site with dramatic clifftop views.
  • Water Park Excursion (entrance fee not included)
  • Pirate Boat Experience: five hours exploring the bays beaches and cliffs of Majorca, on a pirate cruiser, includes snorkelling equipment and lunch. With pickup and drop-off from the villa. €60 per person

Sunday Check Out Day
Sunday is rest day, if you are checking out you will have to vacate your room by 10, but you are welcome to chill by the villa if you have a later flight. Say good bye to your new friends and hello to maintaining a new healthier better you!

Locations Of Activities

While “the hub” of the Kite Camp is set at the beach house. You will be given a bicycle on check-in, which will be your mode of transport for the majority of the camp. The furthest distance you would have to cycle would be 10 minutes and approximately 3 km to get from the beach house to the local town centre of town. The area is well connected with bike paths and is completely flat, along the ocean promanade. Should you wish to go to the local town by taxi, it’s six euros (shared with a maximum of four others).

Learning to Kite Surf what is it like?

Talk to anyone who’s into kite surfing and you will find out how enthusiastic and impassioned they are about this amazing sport. It’s easy to think, looking at some of the acrobatic and near death-defying moves that good kite surfers can pull off that is an almost impossible sport to get good at. Not true. Kite surfing is like anything it takes practice but anyone can learn. You build it up in stages from the basics mastering techniques until you become intermediate through to advanced.

It requires time on the water, and of course wind! But this is why this program is so good. With Majorca’s thermal wind, pretty much guaranteeing to blow every single day throughout the summer months you are out on the water every day. You have the time to perfect the basics, and start mastering intermediate techniques like jumps, transitions and some seriously cool moves.

Once you become a kite surfer, and you are up and running on the water it becomes highly addictive. The sheer freedom of movement on the water gives you a taste of something that is hard to give up.

Kite surfing is quite forgiving on the body, because most of the weight and force is taken by the harness, which means you can spend hours on the water without getting overtired. It’s a sport that gives you speed, the ability to fly, jump and buzz over the water like no other sport can.

How are the days structured?

Majorca benefits from thermal wind in the summer. This is basically a seabreeze that rushes in as the land heats up over the day. Locally this is known as “Embat” and has been a constant since the island was 1st populated thousands of years ago.

Because it takes time for the land to heat up the thermal wind doesn’t kick in until around 1 o’clock. So mornings are easy at the kite Academy. Get up when you are ready, and have breakfast. You are able to enjoy your breakfast on the roof terrace with 360° views of the kite beach, mountains a world heritage site and the largest National Park in Majorca all around. It’s a truly terrific spot. If you want to get active before hitting the water, you can take a mountain biking go explore the natural reserve. Most people will take time to chill in the morning, brush up on some theory to fix in their mind the techniques they want to try out that day.

Then come 1230 time to gear up. We had down to the launch channel which is located conveniently just 200 m from the house.

You will inflate your kites, connect your lines, do your safety checks and then it’s time on the water. The wind will blow solidly until about 4 o’clock, sometimes later but 3 hours a day on the water is more than enough to see some serious progression.

Come 6 o’clock you will be back at the house for dinner, with a debrief, discussing what you learned that day before having a well deserved dinner on the roof terrace.

The evenings are free to do as you wish. You are very close to the bars and restaurants of Port de Pollenca and Alcudia, or you can chill catch a movie on our large outdoor cinema, and just enjoy the local environment.

Here’s how it normally goes. When you start learning, you usually have around 12 hours of instruction which is a beginner kite surfing course. The 1st half a day, let’s say around 3 hours you learn all about how to set up the kite, all about the safety systems how the bar (the control system) works. The idea is to get you comfortable with the equipment, so you can then move into the water safely. Once you’re done with the safety training, you learn how to launch the kite, and you are then in the water without a board learning how to steer and control the kite. This takes usually around 4 to 5 hours depending how quickly you pick it up. It’s very much like driving a car, at 1st you don’t really know all the gears and levers do, but after a while it becomes 2nd nature. So the learning part of the course is designed to get this into your head. Once you are comfortable with the kite control, and the instructors also comfortable with you, you can then do body dragging. This is where you are moving through the water using the power of the kite without the board attached to you. This is where you 1st start to get a feel for the power of the kite and how it can move you through the water. Body dragging does not take that long, but it is designed to get used to the sensation of moving in the water.

After body dragging comes probably the most exciting bit: Water start. Water start is basically your 1st attempt at getting up on the board using the power of the kite. How long this takes is really down to the individual, some people pick it up straightaway (well within the hour) other people take quite a long time to get the feel for it. Once you do crack it, you will be up and moving and then it’s all about practice.

The 1st time you successfully water start, it’s a huge mix of sensations. It’s usually very exciting followed very quickly by a feeling of my God how do I stop this thing!

Once you are up and moving in the water, due to the nature of the sport you tend to be on your own. So it really is just like learning to drive, you have to keep practising.

Frequently Asked Questions

This programme is open to people with all levels of kite surfing ability. That includes if you’ve never even seen a kite surf in your entire life! Kite surfing is a remarkably progressive sport. No matter how long you’ve been practising, you can always improve. It’s time on the water that really makes the difference. You can go from complete novice to beginner in around 6 hours. After several weeks of constant practice you will be intermediate. But here’s the issue. Due to the sport being heavily dependent on the wind, often people don’t have the time to progress. The beautiful thing about this course is you are living right by the kite surf channel, when the wind is in which is pretty much a daily occurrence in June due to the thermal winds kicking up in Majorca, it on. You will have plenty of time to perfect your kite surf ability.

Majorca has 3 kite surf beaches. The most popular is in the bay of Pollenca on the north-east of the island. This is exactly where you will be located. The Beach house’s front line, you are just a couple of metres from the ocean. When your kite surfing day is done, there’s plenty to do in the area as well.

If you have your own kite surf equipment you are more than welcome to bring it. However this is not necessary as all the equipment is included. Majorca during the summertime operates on thermal winds. So we use kites around 14 m with big boards for the perfect setup.

We will collect you from the Alcudia and transfer you to the beach house. There is a direct bus transfer from the airport which takes approximately 1 hour to Alcudia. You will need to make your own way to Alcudia on this bus service.

All food is included, Gappers take it in turns to cook. We have full cooking facilities at the apartment both indoors and outdoors. Breakfast consists of bread, eggs cereals on a self-serve basis. Lunch and dinner will be healthy filling and nutritious and consists of Pasta, salads bbqs ect

Surprisingly not. It’s not easy, but it’s certainly not difficult. It’s a bit like learning to drive the car. Once you know how to do it, safely it becomes 2nd nature. But then it’s about improving your skills, and that requires time on the water. Something that you will have loads of on this course.

If you want to go for an instructor Exam

Kite surf development courses is a great when they are done over several months, as you will probably need 4 to 6 months of practice prior to being able to take your instructor exam. If you are out on the water every day, you can probably cut this time down to about 3 months or 12 weeks, but I would really give yourself more time just to get as much practice as possible. The exam part is a financial commitment and you wouldn’t want to fail it, plus you need the necessary experience yourself if you’re going to be put in a position of responsibility to instruct.

You will be volunteering on a working game reserve. The nature of dealing with wild animals is that no two days are the same! So it’s a bit difficult to be specific about when things are going to happen. We have tried to give you a summary below but the best advice it to be flexible. You never know what exciting animal interactions you will get!

There are a large number of activities that you will be able to get involved in, the longer your stay at the programme the more you will be able to be involved in. Some of the main activities that you may be involved in during your time at the programme include:

We have a highly skilled and professional team looking after you, so don’t worry we have you covered. From our advanced game rangers, who will take you out in groups of 10 onto the reserve to fulfill your activities. Two camp managers, who can cater for your every need when you are not out on the reserves.

When you arrive you will be given a full introduction session, we will run you through dos and don’ts, the house rules and set the scene for what will happen over the next two weeks.

What you will be doing is quite varied, because it depends on the demands of the reserve at the time. But there is always plenty of activities waiting for you to get stuck into.

The Wildlife Conservation Project

For the next two weeks, you will be involved in the management of the game reserve. What that means is you will be working with full-time staff, under the supervision of qualified game rangers. What you will be doing depends on the short-term goals of the reserve at the time. It could be capturing game, checking fences or removing alien plant species. But no matter what you do, you can be sure this will have a beneficial effect and is laying the foundation for the wildlife to thrive on the reserve for future generations.

Expect to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty, some of the work can be quite hard, but ultimately very rewarding.

Work is generally divided into two categories:

Helping manage the land, and looking after the animals. Expect to do both during your time there. You could be feeding elephants, assisting with feeding big cats and doing wildlife surveys from converted land cruisers.

All accommodation and food is included so you do not need to worry about cooking or feeding yourself. During your downtime is plenty to do, and no doubt you will have a fair few stories to share over the campfire with your fellow volunteers.

What’s it like to volunteer on an African wildlife project?

Volunteers are essential for helping the ongoing running and maintenance of a wildlife reserve. It’s a great opportunity to learn loads about the animals, and Africa and do something constructive and fun with your year out. But you are probably wondering what it’s like to actually volunteer on one of these projects. To understand your role better, it’s necessary for us to go back and explain why Africa has wildlife reserves.

When Africa was colonised, the landscape was very different. Animals were free to roam where they pleased. The habitat consisted of the entire continent. The ecosystem was very different back then. As more and more settlers arrived to South Africa more and more of the natural land got converted to huge farms. The native animals habitat shrunk, and worse much of the wildlife was hunted for food, or because they were predators to the farmers livestock.

Slowly but surely fences went up, and the wilderness was transformed into farmland. About 30 years ago, some of the larger landowners who had massive farms decided to put things back to how things were. They wanted the land to become natural again, and haven for animals. This wildlife reserve fits that category. It’s 5000 hectors which obviously requires a lot of maintenance. Invasive plant species like prickly pears that were brought in by the farmers hundreds of years ago as a cheap and easy way to feed their livestock now represent a pest. In order for the land to remain true to its origins lots of effort is required. This is important because the animals need natural habitat to thrive. So on the wildlife conservation project, you will be out helping preserve the wildlife reserve keeping it in its natural state. Then of course there’s the animal side. With huge game numbers, lots of things can happen. Your role is to assist the game rangers in looking after the animals, and helping them when necessary. This does not mean we interfere with the natural order of things. The animals at the top of the food chain will eat their prey and we will not stop them from doing that. But it’s important to look out for all of the animals welfare. During your time you will be taken out with game rangers, who will explain all about the ecosystem as you carry out your daily duties with the rest of your group.

Evenings and weekends off

Evenings and weekends are at your own leisure. There is plenty of entertainment in and around the camp. We have large volunteer groups, so there’s always something going on. When you want to chill there are facilities like games rooms and we have massive flatscreens for movie nights. Not that you will want to watch much television, at night make sure you pop outside and look up you will see 1 million African stars. Sometimes the best stories are shared around the campfire!

ACCOMMODATION

You will be staying in a dedicated 5 star volunteer camp. We have single sex  dorm rooms, and shared common areas. The camp dispensed which is important because it’s located right inside the game reserve. It’s not unusual to hear the call of Africa’s wild as you sit around the campfire. Looking up and 1 million stars the location is really special.

Meals are taken at the camp, hearty traditional South African food is freshly prepared every day. Vegetarians are well catered for as well.

 You will not need much for this trip. All food and accommodation is included on the reserve.
 Please do book well ahead as space is limited on the programme. Simply submit a booking form and you can hold your place with a deposit of £200. Full payment is not due until 12 weeks prior to departure.
We have capacity for up to 80 people. We do get full in peak season so it is a great programme if you are looking to meet lots of other gappers too!
You need to arrive in Port Elizabeth Airport before 3pm on the Monday. Then the transfer leaves the reserve at 9am on Saturday morning and it takes roughly two hrs to reach the airport. Please make sure you give yourself enough time to check-in for your flight.

For Thailand

No, most of our travellers are solo travellers. You will meet lots of people on the different weeks. With group start dates and lots of group activities, you will make new friends really easy.

The trip ends in Koh Tao, please note return transfer is not included in the price of the trip.

Returning back to Bangkok to get on your next trip is easy, transfers can be arranged on Koh Tao through rep and the cost is approximately £20. If you’re flying out straight after the trip ends, you have two options to meet your flight in Bangkok.

You can fly or take the boat and bus.

Yes, for some parts of the trip (Vietnam) you do need a visa. For Thailand and Laos and Cambodia, you get on at the border. But please know that arranging a visa is totally up to you and not Xtreme´s responsibility.

Absolutely our guides will be there to meet you off your flight. If you are nervous about flying on your own, we also hook you up with a buddy list where you can chat to other people on your trip prior to booking your flights. That means you can coordinate your flights together and have a travel buddy as you go.

This is a hard question as age range does vary. Most people travelling with us are between 18 and 26

Is this trip suitable for you? The average age on this trip is between 18 and 26. Although it is open to all. The make up of the groups is usually 60% female to 40% male, just going to show, girls really are braver than boys! So come on lads, what are you waiting for? Prove us wrong!

Thailand is a very safe country in general, it does however get a lot of press due to the political situation. Comparatively you are more in danger in a big city in western Europe then you are backpacking in Thailand. We have a guide with you at all times, and there is a great support network available to you to help you out even for the little things like losing your bank card.

For Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam

Your driver/guide provides you with a wealth of knowledge about history, culture, and trivia as well as recommending and booking activities and accommodation for you around Asia. They are walking guidebooks, always there to help and entertain!
The average age of passengers is about 20 – 26. . No matter what the age we find we attract on-to-it people who want to meet other travellers, and get out there and further off the beaten track.
Our buses range from 14 seaters to 45 seaters with an average group of about 20. We keep them smaller so you can see and do more, and because we find that that groups of this size simply work better.
Its perfect for people travelling by themselves. Asia is relatively safe and our smaller group sizes means, you can meet more people and your driver is always there for any questions you may have.
Backpacks are recommended but suitcases are fine you don´t need to walk great distances with them (just between the accommodation and the bus). The majority of the time while you´re doing activities they will be stored away (on the bus or at your accommodation). We recommend you bring a good day pack (small backpack) or bag you can carry easily for water bottles, towels, cameras, sunblock etc.
You´ll need to bring a decent pair of sneakers/trainers that you can walk in comfortably. Hiking boots are good but not essential. In summer you´ll find flip flops/thongs are the favoured option!
We include free days (non-travel days) in key locations, so even if you´re completing your trip in the minimum days required you´ll have time to do activities and explore each of these areas.   We also have free mornings or afternoons in most places for you to do local activities, just relax or and do some necessary laundry!
Most accommodations and activities accept debit and credit cards, so you don´t have to carry too much cash with you. Some cash on the other hand, is advisable, because some accommodations may require a cash key deposit.
Your travel pass includes all land transport, guidance, free activities such as walks and the city orientations. Your driver will book accommodation for you if you like but the cost is not included in your pass (you´ll just need to pay as you go).
The bus guide helps you reserve accommodation in all our overnight stops. You´ll be guaranteed a bed with a range of accommodation levels, from hostel dorms to made up private rooms; our driver/guides will help you with this. You are free to book your own accommodation if you wish. You will need to book your own accommodation for the night before you start your trip and let us know where you are staying so we know where to pick you up from. We can recommend places for you to stay if you need help.

For New Zealand

Accommodation is not included in the New Zealand Xplorer.  Why?  Well let’s just think about this.  New Zealand is an incredible place with so much to see and do and has lots of places that you will want to stay for longer.   As this is not a set tour with specific day-to-day itinerary, you can stay longer in certain places should you wish.  So we do not include accommodation to allow the trip to be flexible.  That doesn’t mean you will be stranded, we can pre-book accommodation for you as you go (the guide will sort that out for you on the bus).
As a bare minimum you can do this in 25 days.  But that really is pushing it, we would recommend spending four weeks
Then you should definitely join.  Most of our travellers are solo travellers looking to join a group.  The New Zealand Xplorer is designed to help you meet people easily.  Backpacking in New Zealand is highly social, but this really makes it easy.
Most people start in Auckland although you can start in Christchurch as well.
We would work on the basis of about £30 per day.  You will need to cover your hostel bed for the night and food.  Also if you wish to do any adrenaline activities as you travel these can be fairly expensive, be sure to budget enough for some skydiving bungee-jumping!

Once the exclusive territory of Berber fishermen, wandering hippies and seasoned wave riders spying the next rare break, thanks to some determined local surfers with a passion for sharing the swell with everyone, the Moroccan south coast is fast becoming a haven for anyone looking to conquer some waves while exploring the mosaic of desert, mountain, beach and bustle that this country , which is the  gateway to the African continent – offers.

Shrouded by the mountains that stretch deep into Morocco´s heart, perched perfectly on the warm swell of the West African Atlantic, the fishing town of Taghazout has become home to the Xtreme Gap surf instructor camp. Devoted riders themselves, these guys are passionate about everything surf and dedicated ambassadors of the waves.

The surf instructor course packages have been developed to maximise riding time and surfer development, while the opportunity to participate in a wholly immersive experience, with salt-spray waves in the day and spiced up tagine at night, is what´s given these guys their great local reputation.

About the surf Academy

We run the ASI (Academy of Surfing Instructors) level 1 course in conjunction with the SLS (Surf Lifesavers Qualification). The ASI is the worlds leading surfing accreditation and training organisation. It is a globally recognised qualification which can lead to real paid jobs as a surf instructor all over the world. At the Xtreme Gap surf instructor course we put both qualifications together in a nice hassle free course!

Itinerary

Morning:

We have an all local team of chefs and boy can they cook! All your food is included in the price of the course to make it completely hassle free. Breakfast is served at our beach front cafe over looking the waves, an absolutely perfect way to start a days surfing.

Depending on the waves…

Lunch is usually served at the beach as sandwiches, rice, salad, BBQ etc.

In the afternoon

Dinners are served on our beautiful roof top terrace overlooking Taghazout at sunset. Big hearty meals for surfers is on the menu with a mix of traditional Berber cuisine such as couscous and Tajines on some nights, and big BBQ´s of fish, kebabs and homemade burgers on other nights.

  • 8:00-9:00: Breakfast in our beach front cafe. Consisting of Croissants, coffee, tea, cereals, fruit, bread, spreads, eggs, yoghurt, fruit juice
  • 9:00 – leave for the surf
  • 9:30 – 11:30 – surf lessons.
  • 12:00 – lunch. consisting of sandwiches, fruit, snacks, drinks
  • 13:00 – 17:00. More surfing! Also in the afternoons there will be the community projects
  • 17:00 – 19:30. Chill time. Explore the town, chill with the other surf campers, get a sunset surf in, do some yoga etc
  • 19:30: Dinner and relax!

The instructor course is heavily focused on safety in the water. Safety is of paramount importance when teaching someone to learn to surf and the ASI’s safety in the water is internationally known as one of the best! During the course you will learn how to spot rips and currents, discuss the nature of dynamic risk assessments and learn beach lifeguard techniques.

Reasonable levels of fitness are required. We ask that you can swim 25 metres before you start the course, but over the 12 weeks your fitness will improve naturally so don’t worry if you’re a bit out of shape!

Odd as it may sound, we realise that surf camps aren’t always about surfing. They´re about riding waves and discovering different places too, and we don´t want anyone to leave us without their fair share of Morocco – from the dust clad foothills and mountain vistas of the anti-Atlas mountains that shroud Taghazout from behind, to the babel of local fishing village life, the hubbub of Agadir´s bazaars, and the sporadic countryside forests nestled in the aptly named and nearby Paradise Valley.

So, if you or the surf is ever feeling flat, just quiz one of the team, and we´ll point you in the right direction for any activity that takes your fancy. Whether you want to sustain the adrenaline of the waves dune biking in nearby Massa game park, get traditional with a camel ride, raise some sand galloping your way across Taghazout´s surrounding beaches, or soothe those out-surfed muscles with a local Moroccan argan oil massage, we´ve got it all!

There´s also the opportunity to unwind with top quality yoga instructors, who take classes for as low as £12 in local currency in some of the most panoramic spots in the area. You can stretch those aches and pains out, while the sea spray rises from Anchor point below and the Moroccan sun drops behind the horizon.

Finally, if you just want to chill, drop into the Hash Point Cafe where you can watch the Atlantic waves break over the rocks with a fragrant Tagine, some freshly caught fish, or if you´re feeling less adventurous one of the Cafe´s famous bacon double cheeseburgers. (There´s also a wealth of surf gear available for rent in the Cafe, and the manager Rachid is always happy to talk surf, food and local culture).

  • For the first 4 weeks a local teacher will come to the camp twice a week to teach everyone basic Arabic. By the end of the 4 weeks, we hope that all the everyone will be armed with enough knowledge of the language that you can then use your phrase book to chat to the guys at the camp and in town.Over 80% of our staff are Moroccan, and they absolutely love it when tourists speak their local language with them. After the 4th week, official Arabic lessons stop (as we´ll be really focusing on the surfing!) but if anyone really wants to continue, we can arrange weekly classes for you.
  • ´Aftas Association´ was co-founded by our partner in Morocco a few years back to help out the local schools with books and classroom equipment. During your 12 weeks in Taghazout you´ll work with ´Aftas´ to teach English at the ´Taghazout Ecole Superiere´ to children of the age ranges 11-16. To start with you´ll be one of the teaching assistants until you have the confidence to take your own class. Each week you´ll spend the afternoon at the school helping the local children study towards their baccalaureate in English!
  • Live with a local berber family: The Berbers are the indigenous people of North Africa. A very friendly group, always willing to accommodate and welcome you into their homes, you´ll spend a weekend in the hills with one of the families that we have grown very fond of and close to over the years. See how a traditional household is run, cook traditional berber food, help out on the farm and experience the simple life for just a weekend (longer if you´d like of course!)

During those rare occasions when Poseidon and Neptune don´t smile upon us and the waves cease to exist we are not left twiddling our thumbs and practicing our Eskimo rolls. We can take you off to Immouzer or as the locals call it – Paradise Valley. There is only one road in the village. The friendly inhabitants and the simple houses make it clear you are well off the beaten track. Chill out in tranquility and seclusion of the waterfalls. Take a plunge in the rock pools, or trek through the forests something of a rarity in Morocco.

If you need a break from the physical demands of the surf, relax and treat yourself to a four handed massage at the local hammam! Want to get a few gifts for back home? We´ll take you to the Agadir Souks or if you want to see the local countryside a little more jump on a camel. Why not go for a horse ride along the beach at full gallop! We organise quad biking excursions through the dunes of the Massa game park for the petrolheads out there as well. When you arrive at the surf camp, just ask the manager for information on all of these options and we will set you on your way for your action packed surf holiday.

How about a yoga session after a long day’s surf? Our professional instructors takes sessions at the luxury apartment complex overlooking Killer Point. The gardens have views that overlook both Anchor Point and Killer Point and the sunset sessions provide the perfect way to stretch down those aching muscles. All payments for Yoga lessons are made locally to your yoga instructor for the day. Normally the lessons start at roughly £12 in the local currency and to book in just ask the surf camp manager, it could not be easier!

Accommodation

Living at a surf camp:

The surf camp is one of the nicest and most sociable surf camps in the whole European and North African area. The camp itself is situated just 2 metres from the water´s edge (in big swell and high tides you have to time your exit so you don´t get wet!) and we have a beautiful roof terrace that over looks the whole of Taghazout!

At the surf camp you really will live and sleep by the waves. The camp duck-dives the swell all night; sitting literally on the shoreline, you will never be too far from the action, and whether you´re dusting off a tagine on our dinner-time roof terrace or chilling out with some surf vid action in our lounge, we guarantee that reassuring sound of a crashing wave will never be too far away.

Your accommodation will be shared, in apartments close to the Xtreme Gap camp, nestled in the square roofed, sun baked buildings of Taghazout, just a stone´s throw from some of Morocco´s greatest breaks.

Arrival

Let us know in advance an estimated arrival time and we´ll be ready to check you in. If you arrive early it´s no trouble, you can surf your way through the day or hang out in our cafe while we prepare your room, which should be ready by the afternoon. We also offer a taxi service which is a good idea for late arrivals, and can save you a trek through Taghazout´s labyrinthine streets at night.

The currency in Morocco is a Moroccan Dirham, it is possible to exchange your pounds or euros at the airport and the nearest cash machine to the surf camp is in Agadir. It is possible to take a taxi to withdraw money should you require.
Yes absolutely, Morocco is a great place to learn and are surf instructors are some of the best in the country. And you do not need to be a world class surfer in the end either, you do need to be a world class instructor though!
We go on a few over night trips to Marrakech, Essaouira, Immsoune and Tifnit so that you get so see some more of this amazing country. Morocco is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world and it would be a shame if you didn’t get to see as much as possible of it!

South-Africa-Wildlife-Conservation-Experience-(16)Plenty of gap year companies offer wildlife conservation programmes. On the face of it they seem the same, but how do you tell them apart? Without visiting the reserves, and checking out the projects it’s hard to know what you’re getting.

Well we have, and we have selected an exclusive partner in South Africa to run a wildlife conservation programme.

This Experience You Are Not Just Getting a Conservation Programme, You Are Getting a Completely Immersive Experience.

The Volunteer House is located smack bang in the middle of a big five game reserve. As you enjoy a cold beer, by the swimming pool as the smells of the barbecue carries off into the bush, it’s not uncommon for lions to come right up to the fence in your garden.

From the moment you leave the sanctuary of your accommodation you are in it and it is on!

While other companies will station you off the reserve, you will be located in a stunning region. We purposefully run small groups (there is a maximum of 10 participants at one time) whereas other companies can run 60 to 80 volunteers. This means you will get an intimate and personalised experience. You will learn all about the animals and gain a deeper understanding of African nature.

The work you do will genuinely make a difference, with rhino conservation at the forefront of your activities.

So what will you do?

DSC_5624aThere is no set schedule as such but your itinerary will be filled with some incredible moments. From game drives, game walks and hikes to waterfalls, you can expect plenty of interaction with African wildlife.

You will be working alongside leading African conservationists, and have your own mentor Throughout. On arrival you will be given a full introduction, and your programme will be laid out in full. You will be given some essential do’s and don’ts, and it is obviously important that you stick to these as you will be living with potentially dangerous animals all around you.

Game drives

As the name suggests game drives is where you go out looking for the animals. Our wildlife volunteers have at their disposal one specially modified land cruiser that can take up to 10 people. These landcruisers are virtually indestructible, and you will not believe the terrain we can cover with them. Steep rock paths get devoured by the 4×4 which means you will be taken to some quite inaccessible places on a quest to discover the wildlife.

There are other activities that you can partake in as well. It’s a fairly close-knit social experience, with other volunteers from all over the world. You are sure to make friends very quickly. We take you on excursions, the local town canton on Sea is only 15 minutes away and has some of the best beaches in South Africa.

The reserve has a sea view, not only does this make it an already impressive location even better, it serves to bring in the cool winds from the sea, meaning you are not so roasting when you are out in the field.

Safety and guidance

Bear in mind you will be staying surrounded by the wildlife, it’s good to note that there is a fully trained conservation guide stationed with you. Should you have any questions, needs or issues during your stay help is at hand. Not only that our team is young, dynamic and impassioned about wildlife conservation. This will no doubt rub off on you as you work closely with our highly experienced team.

Accommodation

You are located in a shared volunteer house right in the heart of the reserve. The compound is secured with an electric fence, which is completely necessary as there are lions, elephants and other dangerous game roaming freely around the perimeter. Incredible views giving way to the sea and the stunning South African bushveld. It is a haven that constantly reminds you you are in the heart of Africa. There is a gorgeous plunge pool, barbecue area, and garden few to enjoy after a hard days work. There are multiple bedrooms and you share with members of the same sex. Wi-Fi Internet is available although a little slow, but all of the creature comforts you could need are there. We even have a treehouse overlooking a watering hole to enjoy a nice sundowner in the company of wildebeest and warthogs!

Meals

You cook meals in the house. There is a cooking rota so once per week you will be expected to cook for the rest of the volunteers with a partner. Food is purchased once per week, and rationed accordingly. Males are basic but hearty, and dinner time is a very social experience.

Pickup

Airport pickup is included from Port Elizabeth on a pay on arrival basis. There are set arrival dates so please see the date section for availability.

Some of the projects you might become involved in include:

  • Elephant impact monitoring identifying elephants and monitoring their movement, so that they can be managed effectively in the future.
  • Lion prey selection monitoring this is not for the faint-hearted! You must record as many lion kills as possible, so it´s possible to form a picture of what they are eating. As lions are fitted with collars, you´ll get regular glimpses of this majestic beast.
  • Population status of leopards as one of the most elusive animals in South Africa, recording the population of leopards is tough. You´ll help to monitor them, and will be part of a privileged group to have seen this amazing cat.
  • Rhino monitoring  rhinos are becoming rarer and rarer, so it is vital that the remaining animals are monitored effectively. With 633 rhinos poached in South Africa in 2013 alone, protecting them is one of the biggest conservation priorities for the whole continent.
  • Birds in Reserve Project (BIRP) mething that lets you see the beauty of this part of the world first hand!
  • Conservation projects  these include projects such as game counts, sex and age surveys for certain species, controlling invasive plants and controlling soil erosion.

Xtreme Gap Year Wildlife Volunteering South Africa (3)You won´t just get to do one of these projects though you´ll be able to have a go at many of them! That way, you´ll get a real feel for how this important game reserve works. Occasionally, exciting projects such as animal releases and captures will also spring up, but these are not regular and therefore can´t be guaranteed. You´ll also get a number of educational lessons before each activity  don´t worry, they are informal and not like the formal classes found at schools and universities!

What Else Is There?

Don´t worry: it isn´t all work, no play on this trip! You´ll get plenty of days off and will have the choice of many different activities to complete or you can simply sit back and relax for the day, while you take in the sun and the beautiful scenery in the game reserve. Some of the additional activities you can complete are:

  • Two day canoe trip on the Kowie River
  • Trips to the Addo Elephant National Park
  • Shark cage diving
  • Tandem sky-diving

Additionally, the closest town, Kenton, is only 15 minutes away and has an absolutely amazing beach, with a bar overlooking the sea the perfect place to grab a beer and reflect on what you´ve done during the day. The town also has shopping facilities, where you can stock up on essentials. Port Alfred and Grahamstown are also close by, should you fancy a change of scenery.  

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

There are no set arrival/departure dates for this project, but please note all arrivals are scheduled on Mondays. Departure days can be Fridays, Saturdays or Mondays (please note: no Sundays). Volunteers are required to sign an indemnity form acknowledging and accepting the consequences of working in close contact with wild animals. Applicants must be 17 years of age or older. The minimum time period for a booking is a two week placement and the maximum period is 12 weeks.

Please note that our activities are based on a minimum stay of four weeks. Although many of the activities listed below may take place in two to three week placements, not all are guaranteed. So the longer your stay, the more in depth your experience.

This trip runs from 2-12 weeks, depending on your personal preference. The longer you stay though, the more you´ll be able to immerse yourself in the workings of this important and beautiful game reserve! This is a great option if you want to spend a decent amount of time South Africa, because all of your food and accommodation are included, you only have to budget a very small amount for spending money.
There is Wi-Fi at the house, where you will be able to check emails and browse the internet. There is no phone though, so you will need to use the pay phone in  reception or pay phones in the local towns. To make calls, we´d recommend bringing a good supply of “World-Call” phone cards.
Ingredients are provided, however volunteers will be required to cook their own meals each night. Unfortunately ingredients can´t be supplied for those with specific dietary requirements these will need to be bought by the volunteer. If you want a really authentic South African meal, feel free to use the barbeque at the house!
The weather will generally be hot, so make sure you bring plenty of t-shirts and pairs of shorts! Heavy rain does happen though, so it is also vital you bring a decent rain jacket. It is also important to bring clothes suitable for manual work, such as boots and long trousers. You should also bring a sleeping bag for your camping outings, as well as towels, toiletries and insect repellent.
Many volunteers also bring items from home that they can donate to the local school. Popular gifts include stationery, sports equipment and vegetable seeds for the school´s garden. You´ll be amazed at how grateful the children and staff will be when they receive these gifts from you.

No need to really worry about a rabies vac – highly unlikely that you will need it. Most hospitals have this in stock and they could definitely get this within 24 hours (they don’t keep stock but can get in very quickly).  Our pharmacist in Kenton also said that they can order the rabies vac should someone wants to get vaccinated once here.  Most good pharmacies should be able to do this. We always suggest to our volunteers to get a tetanus jab before coming out – if possible but also not to stress if they haven’t (in case they stand in a rusty nail, hurt themselves with a machete whilst chopping out alien plants etc.)

In order to reach the Game Reserve, you will need to fly into Port Elizabeth Airport, where you will be met by a taxi organised by the game reserve. As the airport is predominantly for domestic flights, you will probably need to fly to Cape Town or Johannesburg, before then getting an internal flight. Arrivals to the park must only be on Mondays, although you are able to finish your trip on Fridays, Saturdays or Mondays. Please note whilst we will arrange the taxi for you you will need to make a local payment to pay for it.

Absolutely! There are many other trips within Africa that can be combined with this one, plus it is also easy to go on this trip in combination with a trip to Australia or New Zealand. However you want to combine this trip, we will be able to make it happen!
