Dive with bull sharks before breakfast!

One of the reasons Koh Tao is such a popular Divemaster training location is the strength of some of the dive sites providing really exciting underwater experiences. Our favourite by far is chumporn pinnacle which has resident bull sharks at certain times of the year and if you do enough bull shark koh tao divemasterdives you will properly see a whale shark as well. Recently some of our Divemaster is reported back that they had the most amazing dives with two whale sharks, which is a phenomenal experience.

Varied Dive Sites

During your Divemaster training, you will discover a mix of hard and soft corals and abundant marine life from sharks to turtles and thousands of fish. The sites vary in depth from just a few meters down to 40 meters, there is little current and the water temperature is always warm, ranging from about 27C to 32C offering amazing conditions to dive every day on your Divemaster course!

This Week in Detail

This option is a great chance to know more about Thailand, bond with your fellow participants, and learn about the local surrounding area. You will learn about Thai culture, Thai language and have a

taste of what has made Thai cooking so famous around the world through some cooking classes. You will also visit the famous Buddhist Temple: Wat Phranon Jaksi, the old capital of Ayutthaya (including a visit to the Elephant Village), Lopburi´s museum and pagoda. This programme below is written to give you an idea of this week (it´s an example):

Monday

After breakfast, we have a group meeting and take a short walk around the village before lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we visit a local handicraft shop before being the special guests of a welcome party with local school students performing a Thai traditional dance for us.

Tuesday

An all day trip to the ancient city of Ayutthaya, many ancient ruins and art works can be seen in this city that was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong when the Thais were forced Southwards by northern neighbours. We will then visit the special Elephant village followed by dinner near the river side.

Wednesday

In the morning, we start with a Thai lesson, after which will visit some of the beautiful and famous monuments and Buddhist temples near our centre: Wat Phranon Jaksi (A huge reclining Buddha image) and the Bang-Rachan hero monument. In the afternoon there will a trip to the local town, here you can do some shopping, swimming or check email. In the evening, we will have dinner at a famous Thai BBQ restaurant.

Thursday

In the morning, we visit a local school and join in with the local students. During school holidays (from mid-March till mid-May and in October), when the school is closed, we may visit a palm tree farm or other local life instead. After noon we pick up from yesterday with another Thai lesson and then have an interactive Thai cooking class: after a short Thai lesson introducing the different ingredients you will learn how to cook these ingredients into a renowned Thai dish, and have it for dinner!

Friday

A full day  with several visits in the Lopburi province. Some of the highlights would visit to the famous Somdet Phra Narai National Museum and the Wat Phraputhabaht Temple (Buddha´s footprint) and we will experience some local cuisine at a nearby restaurant.

Weekends

Weekends are always free in most programmes, but participants can delve deeper with advanced Thai Language lessons or hire local transport to visit the Swimming pool or shops in Singburi Town. (these are extra-curricular, please request on site!). Also, feel free to ask the friendly staff for help in getting to some of Thailand´s many nearby tourist attractions.

Week Two: Adventure Options Week – Take Your Pick!

The second week is options week where you can choose from one of the following activities:

  • Elephant conservation
  • Trekking in the jungle
  • Buddhism and culture

You do not have to decide which option you pick when you book; you can wait to see what takes your fancy when you are in Thailand.

Week two option one: Elephant Week

Elephants are the symbol of Thailand and are held as sacred in Thai Culture. Training along side the Mahouts, the Thai Elephant keepers, this week is all about hanging out with the elephants!

Your role this week will be the caring for and feeding the elephants, bathing them, taking the older female elephants for walks, and generally helping out.

Then you will actually get to learn how to ride the Elephants, heading off through forests and around the camp. This week is an unrivalled opportunity to learn about Elephants and connect with your very own! Take it for baths, feed it and get to know him, but just be warned you can ´t take it with you when your week is up.

According to World Wildlife Fund estimates, only 2,000-3,000 elephants remain in the wild in Thailand. The numbers of these majestic animals are gradually shrinking as elephants and villages compete to survive on the land. Sadly, domesticated elephants roam through Thailand´s cities with their mahouts, begging for food and performing tricks for tourists.

During this elephantine adventure of a week you´ll learn about the importance of elephants in Thai culture, their needs and the social problems. Be prepared to get down and quite literally dirty. Daily chores include cleaning (that´s mucking out to you and me) and feeding these majestic animals. You´ll also learn gardening skills to impress the folks back home!

Don´t miss out on the chance to experience the thrill of white water rafting in the nearby river over the weekend. Don´t worry, if you prefer calmer waters, there´s always the swimming pool. Please note, Thailand´s tropical climate does give way to the occasional violent thunderstorm, torrential rain and flooding so the schedule may be subject to change during that time.

Week two option two: Trekking Option

During the second week you and other participants have the option to go trekking in Khao Yai National Park, a lush park not often visited by other tourists. This again will be a unique experience. You will be roughing it, but in beautiful surroundings. After this experience, you will have a lot to boast about when you go home as you will be sleeping in tents and surviving with the basics – we´re sure you will have a lot of fun!

The guides are very friendly and you will really enjoy yourself! Khao Yai National Park highest mountain is about 1,351 meters above sea level.

The tropical moist evergreen forest covers the central area of Khao Yai National Park. There is a rich diversity of plants (about 2,000 species), towering trees draped in mosses, tangled trunks of the strangling figs, drooping lianas, spiny rattan palms and delicate ferns. There is always something new to discover in the forest.

Please note that the trekking is not for the faint-hearted and the itinerary is subject to change depending on seasons, weather conditions, group size etc. so please be flexible.

Monday

After breakfast we will set off for Khao Yai National Park, make a pit stop to get food supplies before we get there. We arrive at about 4.30pm and will then set up the camp and have a Thai dinner. In the evening we will do an exciting night safari.

Tuesday

Early morning we will have breakfast, tidy up the camp site and head off into the jungle. We set up the camp, cook and learn about survival techniques from the experienced park rangers.

Wednesday

After breakfast you we go trekking to different stunning waterfalls, feel free to jump in. Again we will camp at a campsite with amazing views

Thursday

Today we trek back to the rangers base to check into our air-conditioned rooms. Here you will be able relax those aching limbs and get that well deserved shower. We will stay here for 1 night, taking in the glorious scenic views.

Friday

We make our way back to Singburi and the Eco houses (see first week).

Weekends are always free after Jungle Trekking programme. Relax at the Eco-House accommodation, take a local taxi into town, expand your sightseeing and visit the many more sites in the central provinces or take a bus to Bangkok city for the weekend.

Remember to take the following with you on the trek:

  • Raincoat
  • Sleeping bag and fleece – it can get cold in the early mornings
  • Towel
  • Trekking gear – good walking boots (trainers at your own risk)
  • Cap or sun hat
  • T-shirt and shorts
  • Torch
  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Snacks (crisps and cookies) the food menu will be very limited in the jungle!

We will provide the tent, first aid kit and food. Please note that this trek can be physically demanding and on some days you could be trekking for four to seven hours (with breaks). You will be trekking deep in the jungle, climbing vines and walking up and down mountains. Feedback from past volunteers has been that its hard work but one of the most adventurous and fun activities they have ever done. You will end up with lots of stories to tell your family and friends back home.

Week two option three: Buddhism and Culture Option

The Buddhism and Culture programme below is written to give you an idea of this week: The day order may change, however the full programme will still be experienced.

It is quite a ride to get here from the location of the introduction week, but totally worth it! Your time will be spend in the Forest Resort, a luxury new resort and in a newly built dorm accommodation next to the ancient Thai temple.

If you choose the Buddhism & Culture week you will get to know a lot more about Buddhism and Thai culture. During this week you will visit temples, you have the opportunity to ask your questions about Buddhism to the monks, we will teach you about practising meditation and chanting in a quiet and spiritual environment. Our guide is very knowledgeable and will tell you all you need to know. If you have a real interest in Buddhism & Culture, this is the programme for you!

During the temple stay you will experience the Thai temple life first hand, and it is pretty impressive and special.

Monday

After breakfast we leave the eco house in Singburi and take you to Khao Yai National Park. On the way we stop for lunch. After dinner you will be introduced to Buddhism & Meditation ethics.

Tuesday

Forget the lie-ins this week as we rise with (or before!) the dawn to give alms to the Monks. After breakfast we will have a discussion with a local monk, where you will have the chance to ask him questions and hear the Buddhist perspective from a monk. Once he leaves we will have lunch followed by a documentary to learn more of Lord Buddha. We will have dinner at the resort and an early bed time is recommended, as we have an early rise next morning.

Wednesday temple stay!

Tonight we stay at a temple. We leave very early morning and upon arrival we will pay respect to the head master of the temple. Today we also learn some of the history of the surrounding area and temple, we will help clean the temple (sweeping leaves). Then lunch, your last meal of today, as monks eat only one or two meals a day all before 12:00 (noon). After lunch we will learn walking and sitting meditation forms.

Thursday, today we live like a monk

We will get up early for a session of sitting meditation. Immediately after, the boys will follow the monks around the village to gather alms. The girls will stay at the temple and help prepare the temple for when they return. Upon returning you will come together and pray before breakfast. After breakfast we will be spending the day just like the monks: Meditating, praying, gardening and cleaning the temple ground. Again more evening chanting and early sleep time.

Friday

Awake at the temple. You can give alms to the monks, or stay at the temple. We will eat breakfast and provide gifts for the monks for our appreciation for letting us stay and then return for Singburi Eco-house, visiting Wat Muang in Ang Thong long the way.

Weekend

Weekends are always free after this week. Relax at the Eco-House accommodation, take a local taxi into town, expand your sightseeing and visit the many more sites in the central provinces or take a bus to Bangkok city for the weekend.

Remember

Week Three

Week three option one: Cultural Immersion Projects

During this week you will have opportunities to help the local community:

  • Help out in a School
  • Build Clay Houses
  • Looking after kids in a local orphanage
  • Boxing Option

The biggest area in need is education so you will be visiting the local schools during term time or local children or perhaps local police from the village at the Eco house during school holidays. You can chat to the kids, help with both English and maths through playing games, singing songs etc. More information will be given to you about this during your first week.

Accommodation during this week will be either at the eco house or if you prefer, a home-stay. Most of the schools are within walking distance. For those schools that are not, the teacher or a local co-ordinator will transport you there and back. Remember to dress and behave appropriately. The students will look up to you and will attempt to copy your fashion and actions. Ladies, you need to make sure you don´t expose too much skin. Polo shirts/T-shirts, trousers and long skirts are all fine. Also the smarter you dress the more respect you will receive in the classroom.

It can be helpful to bring some materials to help you assist with teaching. For example, books, games and toys. It´s a nice idea to donate these to the school or children once you have left. Pens and paper will be provided. If you have any questions about this week, then please feel free to contact us or talk to the co-ordinators.

If you want to try something different instead then we have the boxing option:

Week Three option two: Muay Thai Boxing Option

During this week you will train in elements of Muay Thai the exciting national sport of Thailand. This is geared for complete beginners so no need to feel intimidated. It is lots of fun and there is no better way to immerse our self in the local culture

While you are training you will focus on many different areas, a large part of Thai boxing includes agility, speed and balance. In order to develop each discipline of Muay Thai (i.e. punches, kicks, elbows etc), you will learn exercises and training drills that promote these three important things.

A typical day begins with an early start, getting up at 5.30am. This is necessary so that you are not spending the hottest hours of the day participating in intensive boxing training. You will head for a run to warm up followed by refreshments at the gym. From here you will take training exercises led by our experienced Thai Boxing trainer. Once fully warmed up you will head into the ring to spar one-on-one. Our co-ordinator will translate the instructor’s explanations into English. He will try to teach you some Thai necessary to learn more about the sport.

From 9am you have the option of going to the swimming pool (14km away) or relaxing back at the eco-house with other participants. The morning routine is repeated at around 3pm. The training can be quite intense, so it is important that you have a warm down period each day.

You will have the opportunity to take part in optional Tae Kwon Do classes some evenings.

Changing Options

If you think that you may decide to change your option for week three from boxing to the teaching option, or that you may add extra cultural immersion weeks you can do this locally.

Week Four – Beach time (6 nights)

This is usually the travellers favourite part of the programme. You will spend from Sunday evening to Saturday morning in the gorgeous Hua Hin District. It is a jam packed week with loads of exciting and intresting activities.

Set near the idyllic city of Hua Hin, you will get a real feel of Buddhism, help conserve the natural surroundings and of course, loads of well deserved beach time.

We’ll take you south to the seaside city of Hua Hin, where you will take part in fun activities where you are able to see several beautiful temples. You will get the chance to help monks and learn about Buddhism. You will also be involved with vital beach conservation activities, visit local the markets and experience other awesome cultural activities. The afternoons are free for you to explore the city and relax at the beach.

Every day, we will take you to a different beach where you will be able to just relax and unwind amidst white sand and crystal-clear blue waters.

  • Dinner at our center when you arrive!
  • Amazing visits to temples!
  • An excursion to Pranburi Forest Park!
  • Excursion to the Artist Village!
  • And lots of beach time!

You are welcome to add-on activity’s or not and do your own thing. The rest of the time is free time to sun bathe, snorkel, explore the beautiful area or simply just chill out.

On the last day,  you will have breakfast, then get a transfer back to Hua Hin bus station.

Accommodation

During this programme you will be located in 3 different locations to get to know about different parts of Thailand. All transfers will be taken care of (arrival transfer is also included providing your arrive on set start dates).

During the first three weeks you will be staying in Eco houses. Normally you share your ensuite room with 1 or 2 others of the same sex. The rooms have a good sized bathroom with western toilet end shower.

To relax you can chill in the gardens or in the communal area where you can hangout with the others. Here also your meals are served.

During the Intro week (week 1), Muay Thai or Cultural Immersion week (week 3) your accommodation is situated about 10 km from the town of Singburi. In Singburi you will find all the amenities you could need i.e. internet, shops, swimming pool, hospital, pharmacy, banks and restaurants. There are plenty of trips into Singburi or you can easily take a taxi (about 15 minutes).

The doors and windows are screened (to protect you from mosquitoes). There are fans in the room. For your valuables, we have lockers available. We strongly encourage you to use them, even if our centres are generally very safe. There are limited laundry facilities so expect to wash your clothes by hand. All participants are expected to be environmentally aware and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and organised. All food is included during your stay. The meals will be typical Thai fare, including plenty of rice dishes. All meals (Thai style) are included.

Facilities:

  • Transportation- Our Eco houses are about 10-15 kilometre from the city, it’s a little bit difficult to travel to town by public transportation but it can be done by local taxi.   Taxis can be called though our staff at any time.
  • Money issues:there are numbers of bank and ATM machine near by. The nearest one is just a km or so away at Thakam market.
  • Internet use:internet cafes can be found in Singburi town. Our accommodation has free wireless internet for participants, but we advise caution in bringing bulky valuables with you.
  • International Phone calls – you can buy an international telephone card (with PIN code) in Singburi. The best ones are from CAT PhoneNet, with which you can call from any phone in Thailand. They can be bought at the post office or CAT office. Don´t hesitate to ask your coordinator for assistance.

During the beach week you stay in our centre in Hua Hin.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

If you are planning on travelling to Thailand for 28 days or less and you have British, Dutch or USA passport you can get a Visa exemption on arrival. This is valid for 28 days and cannot be extended in Thailand. If you are planning on being in Thailand longer than 28 days you will need to pre-arrange a Visa. You can prearrange a visa for 60 days which you can extend to 90 days in Thailand.

There are two ways of arranging your visa. When you are from the UK. You can either go in person to the Thai embassy in London, or you can post your passport along with the necessary documentation and fee to one of the Thai Consulates. In general this works the same for the other countries like The Netherlands and United States too, but please contact the nearest Thai Consulate for visa inquiries.

Please note that you are responsible for arranging your own visa. Xtreme Gap cannot be held responsible if you fail to travel with the correct visa. So please check with your local embassy personally. The previous information is meant as a guide, but visa rules change often and frequently. So do not take this as the current law.

Take £100 a week and you will be living very well. Remember that everything is included on this trip. So all the food, the accommodation, the transfers, airport pick up and loads of activities and adventures along the way are already paid for.

On Saturday, after breakfast, we will transfer you back to Singburi for Bangkok, if you have further programmes with us or to Hua Hin bus station if this is the end of your program, where you can catch a bus back to Bangkok to catch your flight home.

Usually there is an average of 15 fellow travel mates on the trip, but it can be more or less. Did you know that you can meet other travellers before you head out to Thailand? Simply sign up to our online travellers meeting point and you start to chat to other people interested in Thailand. Once you book, securing a place with £200 deposit, you will be given access to an exclusive buddy list. This enables you to talk directly with other people signed up your trip! So you already make some new friends on your trip before you go!

Yes, you can start off with this trip and then do some backpacking in Laos afterwards for example. Another really popular option is to get a 60 day visa before you leave Thailand, and then bolt on the Koh Tao adventure after this trip giving you two months in Thailand.

You will then be able to teach others to learn to surf and earn money by working on the beach and in the ocean! Job assistance is provided in Australia, but your qualification is internationally recognised, you can take it with you and earn more on your onward travels, previous Xtreme Gappers have gone onto Fiji, Bali, New Zealand and some have returned to the UK to teach.

But I have never surfed before…

You can start the surf instructor course at any level even without surf experience. You do have to love the sea, because this will be your classroom and you will have to surf a lot, but hey its fun!

The last month involves a lot of coaching skills.

This qualification enables you to work as a surf instructor in Australia. Perfect for a working holiday spent on the beach! If you do not wish to become an instructor but just want to surf a lot… you do not have to do the qualification.

Extra activities when not in the water.

You will be having surf lessons five days a week, at least four hours a day, but in your free time there is also other stuff to do. Take time to get to know the crew, get involved in the games and activities. Experience kayaking, skydiving, music around the camp fire and much more. On the beach can be as exciting or as relaxing as you like. We travel with volleyball equipment, footballs and other fun stuff. The surf academy is also a very social place, as alongside the surf instructor programme it is also a main stop for Oz Experience buses, meaning every week hundreds of backpackers stop by and yes, it can be a bit of a party!

If you are looking for a little peace and quiet, you have a surf house away from the riff raff to hang out and chill with other academy students. There tends to be seven to ten students training at anyone time, so you always have friends to hang out with.

Meals

Three times a day you will have the best fresh and healthy food you could wish for. Surfing makes you hungry. In the mornings there will be cereal, milk, fresh fruit, toast, jam, Marmite etc. For lunch there will be all kinds of salads, beans, meat, spaghetti and in the evenings there will also be fresh salads, pasta, meat, rice, desserts you name it! All freshly prepared for you!

Accommodation

Set in a beautiful surf spot in a National Marine Park, this is a unique opportunity to spend time in one of Australia´s most beautiful coastal areas. You be living in a beach front cottage with other surfers. The secluded beach is situated between Sydney and Byron Bay.

There will be short term surfers here and others like you training to become a surf instructor. It is a good and safe community and everyone is supportive and open to meeting new people. There is a nice communal area, camp fire area, free coffee and tea and a big TV room where you can chill if you wish.

Exam Fees Local Payment

Please note there is an extra local payment of AUD1000 (approx £500) paid on arrival. This covers the exam fee if going for surf instructor. If your surf skills are not up to standards by the time it comes to be examined you can forfeit the exam (and qualifications) and be refunded this locally.

You can pay this amount by credit or debit card on arrival at Camp.

Frequently Asked Questions

To become a surf instructor you will need a basic and competent level of surfing ability, although admittedly you do not have to be an expert. Much of the “skill” is gained through practice, a lot of which you will obtain on this course. The academy is designed to produce competent surfers in three months that have the skills to complete certification requirements, or become an intermediate level surfer. We have our best coaches working with the students every day which provides a high level of one on one attention. This allows them to improve their surfing in a short amount of time. We use techniques such as video and photo assessment, class room theory, surf fitness, water safety awareness, and countless water time in a concentrated form to ensure we achieve our outcomes. All this takes place in our own surf camps with access to the best waves in all conditions. Our academy is a truly unique experience.
No, you will not be with the same group all the time. Because some people just do the five day surf camp, some stay a month, others two (surf development courses) and some three months like you. As the trip starts frequently people come and go. However the instructors are the same and with surfing you make friends very easily! Soon you will find your way and make friends for life!
It is very likely that you will find a job after you have finished the course. 90% of the population of Australia live by the coast and there are surf schools everywhere. Our partners help you to find a job, but it is not guaranteed. It also depends on your own willpower too. If you really want it and go for it, you are very likely to find a job. In cause it does not work out with finding a job as a surf instructor, there are plenty of other jobs available.
Yes, you can join our Surf Instructor Course without applying for an Australian Working Holiday Visa. You will get your worldwide accepted certificate after finishing the course successfully, but you are not allowed to start working in Australia after you have finished the course. Remember that you cannot apply for a Working Holiday Visa when you are in Australia. You need to do that before you go. So, please think about this carefully.
The Australian Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 costs around   £170. Rates change constantly so use this only as an indication. Furthermore you need to have  around £2,000 in your bank account when you enter Australia with a Working Holiday Visa. You will apply for a visa before you go and will do this online at the website of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of the Australian Government.
As we are entering their habitat to go surfing there will always be a chance of a shark in the area, however we take every precaution possible to ensure our customers and staff are safe.
We do have wifi available, the price is $5AUD for 24hours, $10AUD for 3 days and $15AUD for 7 days.

There isn’t an ATM however we do accept Eftpos and there are daily shuttles running to Woolworths so you can get cash out there.

“This travel pass allowed me to be very flexible during my trip. I travelled with my girlfriend and were able to do what we wanted, whenever we wanted without the hassle of having to organize everything ourselves. I am sure we could have organized some of the things ourselves, but we would have lost a lot of time trying to figure out how to do it. The activities that they included where a lot of fun, like the sandboarding in Inca, and the volcano trek to Misty in Arequipa. I feel I really got to discover Peru!!”

Tropical beaches? Island paradises? Amazing adventure? Welcome to the trip of a lifetime; the ultimate bucket list journey through Thailand! If you love beaches, nature, adventure and a healthy dose of partying, then this is the trip for you!

Amazing value, and perfect for first-time or solo travellers, you´ll instantly make a bunch of new friends in your travel group who will share amazing travel experiences with you.

From the bustling metropolis of Bangkok, to the remote hidden beaches and islands made famous by legend and movies, this tour packs in so much epicness and adventure in just 8  days!

Day 1: Arrive to the Land of Smiles!Day one Bangkok

You´re getting closer and closer to the greatest adventure of your life. Just 10 minutes from landing in Bangkok airport, you start to feel the butterflies in your stomach. A new friend is waiting for you on the other side, ready to take you through the crazy streets of Bangkok to your accommodation and a group of fellow travellers who will soon become close friends. Once you´ve taken some time to relax and unwind in the guesthouse after your flight, you´ll head out for dinner and drinks with your new friends and travel buddies on the iconic Khao San Road.

Welcome to the first day of your amazing Thai adventure! It only gets better from here!

Day two River cruiseDay 2: Exploring the In´s and Out´s of Bangkok

Bangkok is known as the ´Venice of the East´, so what better way to explore the city than taking to the rivers. Cruising along the Chao Phraya River, you´ll experience one of the most epic skylines in Asia, seeing how the modern metropolis has merged with the ancient temples to create one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

After the river cruise, you´ll visit two of the most important temples in Thailand, where you´ll get your first experience of the beauty and intrigue of Thai history and culture. Next, we´ll jump on a Tuk Tuk for a whirlwind ride through the city back to Khao San Road. If you´ve never been on a Tuk Tuk before, you´ll be laughing (and possibly screaming) all the way, as it swerves and dodges all sorts of traffic and obstacles imaginable. Who knew driving could be so adventurous!

Finish the day with an amazing lunch and dinner in one of the best eating spots in Bangkok, Khao San Road; cheap, authentic and delicious!

MassageDay 3: Preparing to head South

Your final day in Bangkok sees you getting ready to head to the tropical south of the country. After checking out of your accommodation, you´ll have an opportunity to relax with a traditional Thai Massage in a local spa. This should keep you sufficiently chilled out during your overnight train journey to the south of the country. You´ll probably be so relaxed that you´ll fall asleep on the train. If not, make sure to check out the awesome views of the Thai countryside.

Don´t worry though, as you´ll have plenty of time to pick up some souvenirs and do a little shopping in the awesome Khao San Road before you depart from Bangkok.

Kao Sok national ParkDay 4: Visiting Paradise in Khao Sok National Park

Prepare to be in awe of the beauty of Khao Sok National Park. Arriving bright and early at 7am, after the overnight train, you´ll be taken direct to the stunning park. Your accommodation here just so happens to be floating on the Cheow Larn Lake. Yep, you read correctly! These cute wooden bungalows are situated on a beautiful turquoise lake, surrounded by mountains covered in lush evergreen rainforest. You can even sit right outside your bungalow door, cooling down by dangling your feet in the lake!

Swimming, kayaking, tubing, bamboo rafting and cave exploring are just some of the awesome adrenaline-pumping activities that can be enjoyed in the park, while surrounded by some of the most gorgeous scenery you´ll ever see. We´re sure you´ll never want to leave your temporary home floating on the lake. However, Thai beaches are waiting:and that´s a pretty good excuse to keep moving!

Koh PhanganDay 5: Beaches, Waves and Cocktails

Today we leave Khao Sok National Park via ferry to Koh Phangan, one of the most iconic and beautiful areas in Thailand. You´ll spend the day on Bottle Beach, a postcard-perfect beach with bright white sand and turquoise blue water, often regarded as one of the best beaches in Thailand!

Swim, sunbathe, relax or snorkel during the day, while in the evening we´ll prepare an awesome private beach party for you and your travel buddies. Cocktails, a campfire, lanterns and music will make this evening one of the most memorable during your travels in Thailand.

After a few drinks and dances around the campfire, you won´t have very far to go for a good nights sleep. In fact, you´ll still be able to hear the sounds of the ocean as you stay in your own private beach bungalow just a few metres from the waves. Not a bad way to spend a day!

DAY 6: MUAY THAI TRAINING LESSON

Wake up in paradise and step out onto the soft sand of Bottle Beach. Today, you can spend the morning sleeping, swimming, getting your tan on, or taking selfies with the world´s best backdrop!

The afternoon is reserved for your Muay Thai boxing experience! Hopping in a taxi boat, we´ll head towards the fishing town of Chaloklum, where you´ll get picked up by open air taxi and travel back through the heart of Phangan to Haad Rinn. It is here where you will try your hand at a bit of Thai boxing. Over the course of an hour your will learn about the sport of Muay Thai, techniques of the national sport and experience a training session with a local fighter. After building up a sweat we check into our accommodation in Haad Rinn just in time for a shower and some sunset drinks in one of our favourite beach bars.

Day 7: Exploring The Phangan Islands

Koh Phangan is one of the best snorkelling and diving spots in the world, and at 11am you´ll be on your way there to explore the water and island for the day. From bathing in a waterfall like a boss, to enjoying lunch on the beach and watching the sunset from the boat, your day in Koh Phangan will definitely be one for the scrapbook!

In the evening, back at the resort we´ll enjoy a farewell dinner courtesy of the tour organizers. Of course no event is finished without some celebratory drinks to commemorate your first amazing week in paradise! On the beach, you´ll party, enjoy a famous Thai bucket or two, and dance the night away, preferably in your bare feet!

Day 8 After the week is up…

neptunesWhen the week has finished it doesn’t mean the experience has to end. Trip Frequently Asked Questions

It depends how long you are travelling for or if you are moving onto another country after but you will not need to pack much for SE Asia. The climate will stay the same all year round which will be in the mid 30´s so light clothing will be best. It will also help if you use a backpack rather than a suitcase as it will be more comfortable for you to travel around with.
Can I speak to other group members before I go? Yes of course you can. We will put you in touch with other group members shortly before your tour. You can also join our Facebook page to interact with your group and others, see pictures etc.
It is recommended that you do take malaria pills in some parts of Thailand and the surrounding countries. The areas that we visit during the tour are generally considered malaria free however this can change so always speak to your GP before you travel and if you are going to other areas of Thailand and S.E. Asia it is very likely that you will need some. You can also consult the CDC website for more info
If you are susceptible to motion sickness then you may experience symptoms during a cruise/ferry, although symptoms tend to disappear as you adapt to the conditions in one or two days. Your Group Leader can help you pick up some medication that will help with this or you could look into getting some sea sickness bands which are now commonly available
Some meals are included so please make sure you let us know in good time if you have any special dietary requirements. Please click here to see the itinerary in full which will tell you what meals are included.
The Centre for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) does recommendations vaccinations such as hepatitiis A & B and Typhoid as well as being sure you are up to date on routine vaccinations. For more information you can visit the CDC website but please remember that information surrounding vaccinations changes on a regular basis so always consult your GP before you travel.

The first day of your tour is mainly a check-in/meet and greet. It gives you the chance to chill out after a long haul flight. Day two is the start of your activities. Do I need to pay for any transport? All transport is included with the Experience within the week.

(Please note: If you arrive in Bangkok 3 days or more prior to your start date, you may have to arrange and pay for your own airport transfer.) and if you choose to go out in the evenings or take part in activities not included in the itinerary then you will need to pay for your own cabs etc…

Any time is a good time. The climate is relatively steady throughout the year and it depends where in Thailand you are going. It can rain more down South during October and November and there are some fluctuations in temperature but in most of the country it is guaranteed to be hot all year round! See our Weather page for more info. When will I meet my group leader? Your tour leader will greet you off your flight at Bangkok airport and take you to your guesthouse. If you have already arrived in Bangkok prior to your start date, then we will put you in touch and your Group Leader will arrange to meet you at the guesthouse when you arrive.
It differs from city to city but very rarely drops below 25 degrees Celsius. Bangkok is always around 35c and tends to have the odd down pour. Do not pay attention to the iphone weather app as it will always say thunderstorms in Bangkok. Not the case! On the islands it is less humid and averages around 33c all year round. They do have a brief rain season between October and November, however it usually only rains for about an hour or two with sunshine for the rest of the day. Check out our country info page for more info.
Yes. The media has a tendency to report only the very worst news, which means that we can get quite a negative impression of a country and quite often we don’t hear anything about the very friendly, helpful people and extraordinary cultures in these amazing destinations.
Nearly 95% of Thailand’s population is Buddhist of the Theravada school, though Buddhism in this country has become integrated with folk beliefs such as ancestor worship as well as Chinese religions from the large Thai-Chinese population. Buddhist temples in Thailand are characterized by tall golden stupas, and the Buddhist architecture of Thailand is similar to that in other Southeast Asian countries, particularly Cambodia and Laos, with which Thailand shares cultural and historical heritage.
You will automatically be granted a 28 day tourist visa on entry to Thailand if you are from one of the countries on the exemption list (see our Visa page). If you are considering staying in Thailand for longer then you may need to arrange your own visa. Visit the Visa Info page on our website to find out all you need to know.
Book your flights to land on your start date if you can. Do not book your flights until you have booked with us and received a confirmation invoice. Generally people will arrive on that date or one or two days before hand. If you land much before or are already in Thailand just let us know and we will help you arrange a transfer and to meet at our accommodation.
Yes. Let us know via email if you are arriving early and your group leader will reserve a room for you at your guesthouse. All you would need to do is pay for the additional nights. Once your group starts,we will cover the rest.

Itinerary

On the Monday morning you will be picked up from the Wake Up Hostel. You can just go there by yourself, which is really easy and we will explain it to you in your pre-departure pack or we can book you into the Wake Up Hostel. Just ask us if you would like that.

After getting on the bus early on Monday morning you will head north and this epic adventure begins. The bus will take you from Sydney to Spot X, your home for the next few months!

Tip: If you want a few days in Sydney before you start, check out our  Wake Up Sydney Pack. This is four days of fun, new friends, cool activities and nights out in Sydney and perfect to bolt onto this trip.

Onto Spot X

A great place to party and to hook up with lots of travellers all trying out some surfing. For the extra brave you can also do a skydive from this location.

There is a great vibe at the camp as quite a few surf trips stop here ” Oz Experience and Contiki Tours to name a few. It is not exclusive to us, but we do occupy the best spot, with a cool club house, bar, chill out zone and all the surf equipment you could need located right on the beach. There is an internet café to show your mates on Facebook the awesome (or serious) wipe outs of the day. The team are on hand not only get you out in to the waves, but keep you entertained with some serious partying!

Just a few rules that govern this place, so be warned.

  • Speedos are banned.
  • No shit music.
  • Respect the local wildlife by not littering.

You will be living in a beach front cottage with other surfers. The secluded beach is situated between Sydney and Byron Bay. There will be short term surfers here and others like you who are staying for a couple of months. It is a good and safe community, everyone is supportive and open to meeting new people. There is a nice communal area, camp fire area, free coffee and tea and a big TV room where you can chill if you wish.

Please note that you will be living in your own room right next to the beach, so your have easy access to the waves and can get out in the surf as soon as you wake up.

Meals

Three times a day you will have the best fresh and healthy food you could wish for. Surfing makes you hungry. In the mornings there will be cereal, milk, fresh fruit, toast, jam, Marmite etc. For lunch there will be all kinds of salads, beans, meat and spaghetti. In the evenings there will also be fresh salads, pasta, meat, rice, desserts you name it! All freshly prepared for you! The portions are HUGE so that surfer appetite will be well catered for.

What you can expect to learn

  • Surf Instructor Course Australia (5)The basics, like standing up and catching a wave
  • The more advanced stuff, like cutting back and linking waves
  • How to read the ocean, currents and check for the best surf conditions
  • Ocean safety, and awareness

A lot of the knowledge is gained through practice, but when you are out in the surf you always have instructors overseeing you and getting your surf skills improved through positive and interactive surf coaching. Of course because you have your own surf shack with the rest of the long term surf dudes, you can avoid that when you wish. If you want to get up and hit the swell as the sun comes up…grab an early night and avoid a hangover, well for one day anyway!

Because the surf camp is really popular, with groups from Oz Experience and Contiki arriving every couple of days to learn to surf with the rest of the crew, it goes without saying that there is a great social scene there. Beach parties, BBQ ´s and lots going on if you dare.

Surfer dudes get sixpacks

And we are not talking beer either, you can expect to get extremely fit during the course, surfing uses and abuses every muscle in your body, and with the great food, you will get in shape in no time. Nice little bonus eh?!

This is your time to shine and show enthusiasm, because employment is not guaranteed at the end of the course, but usually those who show a lot of promise during this section the trip get selected first for a full-time crew position.

All of the different courses start in Airlie Beach at Abel Point Marina. This is where you will receive a comprehensive orientation and safety briefing prior to heading out into the tropical waters for your training.

This certificate gives you the skills to command your own PRIVATE vessel. The International Crew Certificate and documents (IYT) requires a local payment of AUD$100, not included in the price.

Note: If you already have sailing certificates, we can adjust the programme for you.

Finding work after the course

We have 80 operational crew working on the fleet of 16 vessels who work with us in the Whitsundays. Approximately  20% of these crew positions are filled by graduates of this programme. Only 4 spaces are available on this course per month.

It is difficult to predict when crew will be moving onto another location or job or switching to other boats in the Whitsundays, but typically staff move on after 3 to 6 months.

This is very important: We DO NOT guarantee work, however, if you are diligent and punctual, attend work neat and tidy, get good results and reports from the Skippers and Crew you work with, the odds of employment improve.

You may have to wait a while for a vacancy as we cannot predict when crew will move on to create vacancies. You are welcome to seek work with other Whitsunday operators who will be looking for the same skills. We also monitor the number of applicants starting the program, and do at times block out spots if we think too many are starting.

During December the crew numbers leaving does tend to increase, creating more vacancies. It is important to note that we encourage the students who have finished the course, that they are welcome to seek work with other companies in Airlie Beach, and our operational managers do speak to the other companies regularly regarding staffing and employments.

What does the job include

The job typically includes most accommodation and food, and you can be paid up to $500 a week. Imagine spending your time cruising one of the worlds most beautiful locations and have no living expenses and getting paid!
Many gap year students end up working for a few months, saving up a boat load of cash and then travelling further.

Who joins?

The sailing course is open to anyone over the age of 18. It is perfect if you are seeking a career in marine tourism (read living on various cool yachts, sailing the around one of the world’s best marine parks in the eternal sunshine of Australia!). You do not need any prior experience if you want to join the full 23 day course.

Accommodation

During the course you will be spending five days a week on the boat you are training on in shared (two persons) accommodation. You will be staying with someone of the same sex, unless you are a couple of course!

During the weekends you will stay in a nice hostel in Airlie beach. A young and vibrant little town, with plenty going on for when you are not working.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes and no! Work on the commercial charter yachts can be pretty tough: provisioning the yacht, assisting guests, assisting with cleaning, working the decks, assisting the cook. However, if you are energetic and don’t mind getting involved, you will love it.
On the course all meals and linen are provided. All you need to bring is your swim gear, sun screen, clothing, a hat and sunglasses. As you will be spending the entire day on the water, you better also bring a t-shirt with long sleeves  so not to get sun burnt. When you are going in the Australian autumn or winter, you might need a jacket too.
If you wish to continue work in the industry your logbook is enough proof of education. You will need to continue getting this signed off as you work, this is proof of on-going training and/or experience also. The log book is a legal document.   An international certificate as such is not existent, you need to present your logbook.
This is not an advanced course as training to be a skipper/master of a vessel does require ongoing experience and training. This is a fantastic way to start a career in the marine industry.
By taking this course you are given priority for when jobs arise in the fleet. There are other shorter courses on offer providing similar qualifications. However, anyone who has done a sailing course on a small boat (say 25 to 45ft) would soon quickly realise that working on a Maxi is a whole new ball game. The rigging is different, the loads are different, you have coffee grinder winches, multiple winches working together and these yachts can really cause harm if people are not familiar, trained and experienced. This programme gives you experience on the big yachts and greatly increases your employment prospects.
Airlie Beach is really popular, and for good reasons too.
When you head out from Europe to do the Whitsundays as your first Australian adventure, the best place to fly into is Cairns or Brisbane. You can take the bus to Airlie Beach, around 600km from Cairns and 1,100km from Brisbane. Check out the Oz Experience bus pass and see some of Australia on your way…..When you are already in Sydney there are two options. The fastest is to fly from Sydney via Hamilton Island to Airlie Beach (around 120GBP one way). Airlie Beach has only got an airport for internal flights.    For your information Sydney to Airlie Beach is around 1,900km.
The Australian Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 costs around   £170, which is the equivalent of €215. Rates change constantly so use this only as an indication. Furthermore you need to have  around £2,000 in your bank account when you enter Australia with a Working Holiday Visa. You will apply for a visa before you go and will do this online at the website of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of the Australian Government.
Yes, you can undertake the 23 day programme. If you do not have a Working Holiday Visa, you cannot apply for a job with us at the end of the course. Some guests have done this course because they saw it as a good way to spend three weeks.
Unfortunately we  are not affiliated with the RYA, so we would not employ someone with any of the RYA qualifications, for example the RYA Day Skipper Qualification. So, in order to be able to obtain a job with us you have to do the course.

Muay Thai Training Thailand. The Training Schedule:

Xtreme Gap Thailand Muay Thai 2012 (2)The Muay Thai Training in Thailand is not just for Muay Thai addicts! It is a great for fitness and to do something health different and great fun on holiday: This all takes place in a beautiful Paradise island setting with a lively and exciting night life. Every day in the early morning hours, when it is not too hot, we start off our Muay Thai training at the Boxing Stadium.

Your dedicated Muay Thai trainer will brief you about the sessions goals and begin with a warming up to get your body ready for action. If the morning hours don’t suit your holiday plans, no problem, we also hold daily Muay Thai training sessions in the evening when it cools down again.

The Muay Thai training in Thailand typically consists of skipping rope and shadow boxing which is a good way of stretching and warming up. Running up and down for short distances will help to improve your foot work and you will also learn many new Muay Thai techniques.

The warming up is followed by bag work. 3-5 minute rounds of punching, kicking, kneeing and elbowing a kick bag to increase your stamina and the power of all your physical Muay Thai weapons.

Next: Muay Thai pad training. When Muay Thai Training in Thailand the Muay Thai trainer wears shin guards, a stomach pad and two pads held in his hands, so he can interact with you and make the Muay Thai training more exciting and focused. This part of the Muay Thai training will help you to figure out distances and speed up your reaction time. Depending on your condition those rounds are as well set to 3-5 minutes.

Clinch training will follow where you practice close up Muay Thai knee strikes and elbows techniques as well as grappling and foot work for 10-30 minutes depending on your strength and fitness

To cool your body down slowly, we will finish up each Muay Thai training session with some light shadow boxing, sit ups to strengthen stomach muscles and stretching. This will increase flexibility and help to stop cramps and torn muscles. If you are training to fight we will also add running to your training schedule.

Get in the ring! If you dare!

If you are brave enough and feel ready for it, toward the end of your Muay Thai training program you will have the opportunity to put your skills to the test!

You have the option to take part in a live Muay Thai fight in front of hundreds of spectators

Thailand Muay Thai (4)(Note: this is at the discretion of your trainer and is not compulsory. You will only be able to take part if you are deemed ready you will not be allowed to fight otherwise)

So what’s fight night like? Well is a lot of fun just watching it, but when you know that you will be fighting live in front of 200 people, with frenzied betting going on all around you and the sound of Muay Thai music, it is quite atmosphere. Feedback from Xtreme Gappers has shown the preparing for a fight really gives you the motivation you need in your training. But don’t take our word for it, you can see reviews of previous Muay Thai fighters in the video section.

Fighting is a great honour remember this is the national sport, and ties can start training from a very early age as little as four years old. Along with competing comes respect, and as you will be prepared and trained by ex-champion Muay Thai fighters the satisfaction from this trip is incredible.

Who joins?

Anyone can join, men & women alike, if you want to experience a totally unique and exciting way to spend some of your travelling time, then there are a few trips to offer so much excitement, action, health and fitness on a gorgeous tropical island where you are genuinely surrounded by culture.

How To Beat the Credit Crunch: With your Fists, Knees and 6 other Muay Thai Weapons!

Xtreme Gap Thailand Muay Thai (1)It was a cold dark night in September when David Cook finally succumbed to a long burning desire. Fuelled by a combination of his interest in the Thai national sport: Muay Thai, abysmal UK weather and his repetitive job and lifestyle: he decided to get away from it all for a while, to have a short career break and learn Muay Thai in Thailand [http://xtremegapyear.co.uk/programme/asia-muay-thai-training-koh-tao-thailand_35]. He wanted to become a better fighter, and at the same time have a decent break on a paradise isle in Thailand: The land of a thousand smiles, where it is always hot, the beaches are idyllic, the food fragrant, healthy and stupidly cheap.

Taking advantage of a gap year companies (Xtreme Gap) Muay Thai programme he set off for 2 months to the motherland of Muay Thai. We caught up with him after his trip, looking brown and smug to find out a little bit about his experiences and what it was like…

MIA: “So tell us about what made you decide to set off on this adventure?”

Dave: I have been training in Muay Thai for a couple of years at a couple of different clubs, so it has always been a sport that I have enjoyed, then I heard about this Xtreme Gap program where you get a true sense of the sports roots: training with the Thai and being trained by Thai champions. The setting looked pretty spectacular too: a small little tropical island north of Samui in the gulf of Thailand, so I figured what the hell – what have I got to lose. Looking back on it now I believe that any avid Muay Thai enthusiast should take a pilgrimage there, not just to watch a fight but to train and take part in a conwww. So I looked into it, and worked out that it would actually cost me very little to take a 2 month break and give me proper time to devote to myself to do Muay Thai training Thailand.

Tropical Island sound nice…

It was. Stunning. Turquoise blue sea surrounds gorgeous little white sand beaches with palm trees everywhere, in fact some say 3 million coconuts are grown there a year, so much so that they warn you not to fall asleep under trees in case you get hit by one! But it makes for a spectacular setting, on the islands interior is a tropical jungle, not quite Robinson Crusoe but not far off it. The perfect place to spending your recovery time relaxing your muscles and building your strength with amazing Thai food. The Gym itself was nestled up a sandy track a few minutes from the sea, best looking gym I have ever been to…

So what can you tell us about living there?

What a place, you live in an environment where everyone is happy, and interested in making new friends and having fun. The weather is great, as you would expect, but there is more to it than that. The Island seems to have a magical attraction to it, people go there for 3 days and end up staying 3 years. A combination of the easy happy lifestyle and total lack of outside world influences creeping into spoil your day. Some day’s your toughest decision will be what colour Thai curry to eat. At night the beaches come alive with fire shows and happy revellers drinking Thai Whiskey buckets, I mean seriously? Who ever came up with the idea of serving drinks by the bucket knew how to party – but it is not over done, it still has a lot of charm of a small island.

What about the training? How did it compare to the UK? Were there any language problems?

Well first lets just say that the Thai are 110% committed to the sport, in Thailand becoming a Muay Thai fighter brings great honour on the fighter and his or her family. Not to mention it can be a respected form of income for their families. So much so that they start training at a very early age, I have seen 6 year old ´s go at it in the ring. This national love of the sport translates to the training very well, whether you are a “farang” (Thai word for Western) or Thai national. They are so passionate about the sport that even if you are inexperienced, yet show desire or interest to learn, they embrace you and will give you the training of your life!

The instructors language skills were not great, but it really did not affect their performance, their enthusiasm was infectious, and you always knew what they wanted you to do. Also there are many westerners on the island, dive instructors and other nationalities living and training there, so you meet lots of people and make new friends, you never feel that you are alone in a foreign country.

What did the training actually involve?

Xtreme Gap Thailand Muay Thai (3)Every day in the early morning hours, when it is was not too hot, we would start. The training consisted of skipping rope and shadow boxing, bag work, and then 3-5 minutes of punching, kicking, kneeing and elbowing a kick bag. Pad training with the Thai Trainers – former national Champions where the trainer wears shin guards, a stomach pad and two pads held in his hands, so he can interact with you and make the training more exciting and focused.

Clinch training followed where you practiced close up knee strikes and elbows techniques as well as grappling and foot work for 10-30 minutes depending on your strength and fitness.

Finally to cool the body down slowly, we finished up each Thai boxing training session with some light shadow boxing, sit ups to strengthen stomach muscles and stretching.

Did you compete? What was it like?

It was the most incredible mix of sensations I have ever had in my life: nerve wrecking and exciting at the same time. I was out there for 8 weeks, so I had some time to prepare and watch a few fights, but nothing really prepares you for the sensation of stepping in the ring with hundreds of spectators watching. Some of whom have become your friends over the weeks. You know that you are going up against a determined opponent who does not want to loose. The drone of the Pi Muay really gets you into it though one of the 4 instruments used to create the sound of the “Wong Pi Glong ” fight music. It focuses the mind on the fight and helps prepare you mentally.

Before the fight starts it is tradition to perform a ceremonial dance Waikru a demonstration of respect to your teacher and it is while you are doing this the adrenaline really starts to kick in.

The fights last for 5 rounds, 3 minutes a round my opponent was tough, I had a reach advantage but hitting this guy was like punching a wall and he moved really fast. It was a close call but I beat him, thanks to my brilliant instructor Pi Toon and all weeks of training. After the fight I was like a local hero! All the Thais were shouting my name when I arrived at the bars that evening for a well deserved Singha beer.

Well done. I bet it tasted good! Any Advice to budding Muay Thai Champions?

Don’t have any pre-conceived ideas, just do it will be the experience of a life time. I went out there for 8 weeks and I only spent a little over £1000 on the program including accommodation and travel insurance, and the cost of living there was so cheap, that I came back with spending money to spare. I experienced a new culture, learned a lot and came back feeling fit and healthy: ready for my next fight, the only down side was coming back, but I know that one day I’ll be back out there.

In general this works the same for the other countries like The Netherlands and United States too, but please contact the nearest Thai Consulate for visa enquiries.

Please note that you are responsible for arranging your own visa. Xtreme Gap cannot be held responsible if you fail to travel with the correct visa. So please check with your local embassy personally. The previous information is meant as a guide, but visa rules change often and frequently. So do not take this as the current law.

Sri Lanka Experience Xtreme Gap (15)Welcome to this magical land of myths, legends, breathtaking scenery and some amazing activities that you’ve never experienced before. This is Sri Lanka.

Our itinerary gives you a few weeks to explore many aspects of this fantastic country and you can even tailor the trip to suit your interests.   There is a saying that   goes ‘It’s not my cup of tea’, but with Sri Lanka you will definitely find something that is, whether that be the spiritualism, the nature, the architecture or the even the delicious tea from the abundant plantations.

First week introduction

The first week consists of a comprehensive induction, city tours, language lessons and a history of Sri Lanka. It’s an ideal time to get to know the group that you’re travelling with and in addition to the planned activities you’ll have plenty of free time, including the weekend.

Sunday

Arrival day and airport pick up/transfer to your accommodation.

MondaySri Lanka Experience Xtreme Gap (16)

Your adventure begins with an explanation to the coming weeks, a language (Sinhala) and cultural lesson and a tour around the city of Kandy .

Today is all about Sri Lankan culture and religion.  To ensure that you get the most out of your adventure in Sri Lanka (and to avoid offending any locals!) there will be some guidance on the culture, customs and etiquette.  A predominantly Buddhist country, the religion has a big influence on day-to-day life and conduct in certain places and situations.

If you haven’t already invested in a phrase book then you’ll find the morning language lesson invaluable.  By now you’ll be wishing you could greet the residents and order a meal in the local language, so your teacher will get you started with the basics.

The Sacred City of Kandy, one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka, sits between the dramatic mountain ranges of Knuckles and Hanthana, and was the last capital of the ancient kings’ era of Sri Lanka.  The city itself has been developed around a large picturesque square and pretty lake.  This is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has a combination of stunning architecture and interesting history, particularly at places such as the Palace of the Tooth Relic, The Royal Palace and the Lankatilaka and Gadaladeniya Temples.
If this far-eastern paradise city looks familiar in some way then it might be because much of the 1984 film, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was filmed here.  However, you get to see and experience far more than the Hollywood take.
On Monday evening you are treated to a show of traditional Kandyan dance. There are many different types of dances, each one with its own traditional meaning and purpose.  Some dances are named after the musical instrument that accompanies it and others are named after the animal of which the dance interprets.  The whole experience of the music, dance, elaborate costumes and history is fascinating.

Tuesday

During early historical times Sri Lanka was world renowned for its Quality Spices. During your time in Sri Lanka you will be getting a unique experience about Sri Lankan Spices and learn about them at a Spice plantation.
Kandy Lake is a lake in the heart of the hill city of Kandy, built in 1807 by King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha of Sri Lanka next to the Temple of the Tooth and you will be getting a boat ride in this lake. and we will be exploring more! A tour around the Garrison cemetery which was opened in 1822 as the final resting place for British nationals who passed away while in then colonized Ceylon. Sri Lanka is also well known for the gem industry. Sri Lanka was named Ratna Deepa which means Gem Island. You will be getting a chance to visit a gem museum and learn about different types of gems and how they are formed.

Wednesday

There is a special treat waiting for you where you will be attending a cooking lesson with a local family. You will get a chance to learn about Sri Lankan spices and how they are being used and learn to cook some Sri Lankan dishes. You can then enjoy lunch prepared by you with the family.
As Buddhism is the main religion in Sri Lankan, you have the chance to learn about Buddhism in the evening by two monks. They will give you an introduction to Buddhism and also you can meditate.

Thursday

The Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, the temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of The Buddha, is possibly the most sacred Buddhist shrine in the world. It is venerated not only by Buddhists in Sri Lanka but by Buddhists all over the world and you will get the opportunity to experiencing the beauty of it by visiting the temple and will learn about its history and it architecture.
Your evening will be free for you to explore the city trying the Sri Lankan cuisine and many more things and why not go shopping.
Friday

On Friday morning we visit one of the largest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka and the only Buddha stature where your allowed to climb all the way up to the shoulder of the statue and you will get a beautiful view of the whole Kandy city.
Also you can visit one of the beautiful Hindu temples popularly known to the Sinhalese as Pillaiyar Kovil dedicated to God Ganesh, the elephant headed son of Siva. The history says that this holy place was founded during the early times of the British rule. The devotees started building a shrine for Ganesh after finding a statue of the God in a well there. This experience will give you a taste of other religions in Sri Lanka.

After a delicious Indian meal, you will be treated with a soothing Aurvedic massage to end the orientation week.

Sri Lanka Experience Xtreme Gap Year (6)

Saturday and Sunday

You´ll have some free time to enjoy more sightseeing, shopping or eating, and to prepare yourself for the start of ´Adventure Week´.

Then choose your adventure:

Elephant Week

Sri Thailand Experience (5)

Go Trekking

Sri Lanka Experience Xtreme Gap (1)

Yoga and Spiritual Body & Mind

During adventure week you have the opportunity to choose from a number of activities, which are all very different and suit those who like to be active or those looking for more tranquil days.   From ‘Elephant Week’ to ‘Body and Mind Week’ you can be at one with nature one way or another ;0)

Elephants

Sri Lanka Experience (98)This is one of the most popular choices for adventure week and is certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  The location for this activity is close to the town of Kegalla, halfway between the present capital and the ancient royal residence of Kandy, at the Pinnawela Elephant tourist park.

You will be transferred from your residence in Kandy on the Monday morning and take the two hour drive to the town where you will settle into your accommodation, either a homestay or a guest house, depending on the group size, before heading off to the orphanage to find out what you´ll be doing for the week.

You will work there from the Monday to Friday, between 8am and 5pm, which might not sound like much of a holiday, but as you might have gathered, Xtreme Gap provides adventures! There is a typical daily schedule for looking after the elephants and once you have got over your initial awe and excitement at being so close to these magnificent beasts your duties will include the following

  • Cleaning the elephant beds (yep, dung-tastic)
  • Washing and feeding the elephants (they may decide to give you a wash too!)
  • Learning elephant commands (you definitely haven´t covered that in your language lessons)

At the end of the week you´ll not only have made lots of new friends (of the human and elephant kind), but have made a really big contribution to this important project.   You´ll also get a certificate to prove it!

On the Saturday morning you will return to your base in Kandy to relax for the weekend, rest those tired muscles and catch up with the rest of the group to find out what they´ve been doing in their adventure week.

Trekking

The trekking week is the perfect choice if you love the great outdoors, breathtaking scenery and a good amount of physical activity. During the whole week you will be staying in our  house and will travel daily. So no need to take all your stuff. Just bring a day pack!

Monday

Sri Lanka Experience Xtreme Gap Year (13)The day will start early with a short introduction into the weeks activities. We will then have a quick breakfast and proceed to Sigiriya Rock, also known as Lion Mountain.   This 180 metre, steep granite rock  is an archaeological, historical and geographical wonder, with the ruins of an ancient stone and rock fortress and palace, extensive network of gardens and lakes and rock paintings or frescoes, that are thought to date back to the 4th  and 5th  century.

After exploring this area you will get a once in a life time experience to ride on an elephant.  Just be aware, that it’s gonna be a quite a bumpy ride!

You will then get a chance to walk through the rose stone garden also known as “Namal Uyana” which is the largest ironwood forest and pink quarts mountain in Asia. It’s the perfect opportunity to take some more photos of this stunning and historical area.  In the afternoon you will return to Kandy for a hearty dinner, much-earned rest and to prepare for the next day’s trek

Tuesday

Sri Lanka Experience Xtreme Gap (8)Starting your day with breakfast, you will leave the accommodation to visit the three of the most ancient and interesting temples in the central highlands of Sri Lanka known as Embekke, Lankathilaka and Gadaladeniya which are important to both Hindus and Buddhists. These three temples not so far from each other can be visited by foot through the beautiful rice fields and a wonderful landscape. The temples were built in the 14th century and you will see its beautiful wooden carvings, ancient paintings and ruins.

Wednesday

Today you will get a chance to hike the Ambuluwawa peak located in the Gampola Kingdome which was discovered in the 14th century by the Sinhala King Bvanekabahu IV. Ambuluwawa is about 365 feet above the sea level and 1965 feet from the level of Gampola town. It is famous for its bio diverse composition with over 200 different kinds of plants. Ambuluwawa is the only Sri Lankan mountain surrounded by other mountains adding beauty to its scenery. It is surrounded by mountains such as Knackles range in the North, Piduruthalagala on the Eastern side, Adam`s peak in the South and Bathalagala (bible rock) on the West. So be prepares to click pictures once you hike all the way up to the peak.

Thursday

Sri Lanka Experience Xtreme Gap (7)

Today you will have a late start as you will be visiting one of Sri Lanka`s rainforests known as Udawatte Kale Sanctuary also known as Royal Forest Park of Kandy located on the hillside behind the Temple of the tooth relic. This forest extents about 257 acres and is a shelter for different types of animals and creatures live, such as monkeys, wild boars, hares, porcupines, lizards, reptiles, many types of birds, worms and insects. The forest is considered to be a vital Bio reserve for the much populated Kandy city and is filled with trees, creepers, ferns, grasses fungi and bacteria.

It is said that the pond at the heart of the forest is where the queens from the past used to bath. The kings also used the forest during war time for their defense against attacks.

Friday

After breakfast you will be off to the hill country side of the central province in Sri Lanka to visit Nuwara Eliya city located at an altitude of 6,128 feet. You will have a city tour and as Sri Lanka produce one of the best tea in the world, you will get the opportunity to visit a tea plantation where you will get the chance to walk through the plantation and watch how they produce the world`s best tea. You will also be able to see beautiful landscapes in Nuwara Eliya.

Weekends

The weekend will be free.

Body and Mind

This is all about learning how to have a healthy mind and body, through a combination of meditation, yoga and detox treatments.   This might be right up your street or you could be thinking ‘I’m not into all of that!’, but before you dismiss it have a read through what the week entails as you might just find that it’s exactly what you’re looking for.  After all, ‘Xtreme’ doesn’t just mean adrenalin-fuelled adventures, it’s about doing something that you’ve never done before.

The daily schedule is as follows:

  • You’ll rise with the sun and take a guided meditation session, followed by a yoga lesson.
  • In the afternoon there are sessions on Ayurveda (derived from the Sanskrit words meaning ‘Life’ and ‘Knowledge’) and an Ayurveda detox treatment.
  • In the evening there is another guided meditation session, including instruction on breathing techniques.

Don’t worry if you are a complete beginner when it comes to these practices as there are different stages.   In brief you can expect to learn the following techniques.

  • 5 days of Aurvedic massages
  • 4 days of Yoga
  • 1 day meditation

Beginners:

This starts with the Surya Namaskar, also known as the Sun Salutation, which you may have heard of.   It contains 12 consecutive Asanas, or postures, and promotes the fitness and flexibility required to move onto the second stage.

Second Stage:

If you master the Surya Namaskar then you will be taught several more Asanas – up to as many as 15, depending on how you get on.

Advanced Stage:

For those who become adept at the previous stages will be taught more advanced Asanas.   However, if you don’t get to this stage don’t be disheartened – it’s important for everyone to work at their own pace and its certainly not a competition!

Pranayama:

Sri Lanka Experience Xtreme Gap Year (1)This is the study and practice of breathing techniques that can be taught once reaching the advanced stage.   If you’ve ever been involved in sport or activities such as singing, you’ll know that there is more to breathing than the automatic ‘in-and-out’ reflex.   When studied properly you can learn techniques that cool or heat the body, help concentration and assist with cleaning the body of toxic air.   It really is quite amazing.

When you’re not having lessons you can enjoy long walks amongst the gardens and soak up the peaceful atmosphere, which promotes feelings of tranquillity, and enjoy the Ayurvedic detox treatments.   These include massages with herbal oils, body scrubs and a Dhara treatment, all of which help to remove toxins from the body, improve circulation, clear your mind and put you in a relaxed mood.

To ensure that you get the most from the mind and body week the meals served are vegetarian and you are asked to refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol.

After the week we’re sure that you will feel like never before and quite a few of those who have chosen this activity for their adventure week have carried on with the techniques at home.

Turtle Conservation

Sri Lanka Experience Xtreme Gap Year (11)If someone mentioned babies to you, you might well run a mile!   But, what if was really cute little baby turtles?   We can see you going all doe-eyed from here ;0)

During this part of the trip you’ll stay at the volunteer accommodation in Ambalangoda where all your meals will be provided (Monday to Friday all 3 meals and during weekends brunch and dinner)

Your tasks throughout the week will include:

  • Collecting and hatching eggs
  • Identifying different kinds of turtles
  • Caring for turtles – feeding, cleaning tanks
  • Dependent on the season you may release turtles back into the ocean!
  • Treating sick turtles
  • Protecting turtle nests
  • Rescuing turtle eggs
  • Helping to keep the beach and general area clean

The working week is from Monday to Friday from 09:00am – 03:00pm and it is such a rewarding experience.

Ambalangoda Beach Week

Sri Lanka Experience Xtreme Gap (17)After all the hard work of the previous few weeks, this is just what you need.   The chance to relax on the soft sand beaches, with swaying palms for shade and a coconut toddy or Lion Beer for refreshments.

You’ll be based about 90kms from Colombo for beach week, at a stunning untouched location.   In addition to chilling out in the sun you’ll have the chance to visit local places of interest, including a mask factory, temples, Galle City and go on a river safari.   In addition it’s a great chance to meet up with everyone whom you started out on the adventure with – you’ll all have different experiences to share and that’s one of the things that makes the ‘Xtreme Gap’ adventures so good as you meet so many likeminded people as well as taking part in activities you’ve never had chance to do before.

It really is the perfect end to a month in this stunning country.
