Want to know more about Indonesia and Bali? Check out our Indonesia Blog for further details.

Yes, for this trip you need to arrange a social visa for Indonesia.

Yes, We have. There is the local internet access in the house centre. Participants should bring their Laptop. The Internet is for free off charge and good enough for Email,Facebook, Blog etc. There are many restaurant and coffee shop nearby 2 minute walk with free Wi-fi as well.

If you´re here for a short time, and only staying in Ubud, you can easily get along by walking everywhere : this is one of the charms of Ubud. (Just watch out for uncovered sections of sidewalks, and please do your best to avoid stepping on the offerings the Balinese leave at the entrances to their family compounds and businesses!)

If you´re here for longer and wish to do some independent island exploration, bicycles are available for rent. Make sure you get a good helmet : roads are narrow, often full of pot holes, dogs are everywhere, and the Balinese like to drive like stock car racers! While driving, repeat this mantra: “Slow and Go, Slow and Go : Om.” There are plenty of drivers ready and willing to take you anywhere. Walking is still the best choices for you.

If you visit between November and April a rain poncho or umbrella will come in handy, and both can be purchased inexpensively here. As this time is Bali´s summer, the rains tend to be warm and humid, but a light jacket can be useful for evenings. May through October is typically dry season and winter. Comfortable sandals are a must, and should be easy to take off as most Balinese do not wear shoes indoors. Same day laundry service is inexpensive and plentiful, so you´re better off to pack light. Don´t forget your bathing trunks!

Anytime you go into a temple for a ceremony or tourist attraction you MUST wear a long sleeve shirt, pants or preferably sarong that cover your knees. Women and men have separate requirements.

It is recommended that you visit your GP, personal physician or a travel health clinic 4 to 8 weeks before your departure to Indonesia. Recommended vaccinations often include hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and polio. Bali is not a high-risk area for malaria and the tablets can be considered controversial, we recommend that you do some research and make your own decision on this. Dengue fever is another mosquito borne illness to be made aware of.

You might want to bring a prescription of Keflex, or another type of oral antibiotic that can help with stomach ailments. Even though you will be eating in good restaurants, there is always a chance that you can get Bali Belly – a mild dysentery that passes in a few days.

You will probably want to! If you would like to stay more than 30 days, you can apply for a 60-day tourist visa at the Consulate of Indonesia closest to you. You will likely have to show proof of a ticket to leave the country.

Yes, a visa is required for Indonesia. A visa-upon-arrival system is in place for most countries including Australia, Canada, US & EU citizens. When you arrive at the airport in Denpasar you will enter the Visa-on-arrival line, where you will be asked for U$25.00 and your passport will be stamped for 30 days from the date of arrival. Upon leaving, a 150,000 rupiah departure tax will be assessed.

N.B.  If your passport is due to expire within 6 months, we advise you renew. On occasion, Indonesia has not allowed tourists into the country, and your airline might not allow you on the plane.

remember we can be wrong, obtaining the correct visa is your responsibility

The Xtreme Gap Morrocco Surf Camp

The surf camp is one week seven days six nights.

Morocco Surf Camp (24)The Moroccan south coast is fast becoming a haven for anyone looking to conquer some waves while exploring the mosaic of desert, mountain, beach and bustle that this country ” a gateway to the African continent – offers.

Quality not quantity is the name of the game here, in terms of both waves and experience. The surf camp packages have been developed to maximise riding time and surfer development, while the opportunity to participate in a wholly immersive experience, with salt-spray waves in the day and spiced up tagine at night, is what´s given these guys their great local reputation.

The Xtreme Team

Being dedicated surf instructor means knowing your sport, and we´re really passionate about making the best surfers out of all our campers. All our instructors are qualified by the Moroccan Surfing Federation or the French Surfing Federation, have passed Nick Thorn´s BSA, and have grown up surfing these beaches, so they really know the local swells and turns.

We structure our beginner lessons to encourage surfing development over a week, while more advanced surfers can get detailed technique advice – from choosing the right waves to technical maneuvering.

We´re the only surf school in Morocco that will get you riding with the locals, which means that you´re right in the thick of Taghazout´s surf culture from the get go, with that all important insider knowledge that will help you get the best breaks and longest rides.

The Surf

Our instructors are hounds in the hunt for the most pristine waves, and we can guarantee they will get you surfing the breaks that suit your level and style. Whether it´s the points´ right peelers, the reef breaks in Mysteries and Boilers or the beginner´s beach breaks at Devil´s point, you´ll be sure to find something worthy of your ride here.

When you´re Not Surfing

Surf Instructor Course Morocco (4)Odd as it may sound, we realise that surf camps aren´t always about surfing. They´re about riding waves and discovering different places too, and we don´t want anyone to leave us without their fair share of Morocco – from the dust clad foothills and mountain vistas of the anti-Atlas mountains that shroud Taghazout from behind, to the babel of local fishing village life, the hubbub of Agadir´s bazaars, and the sporadic countryside forests nestled in the aptly named and nearby Paradise Valley.

So, if you or the surf is ever feeling flat, just quiz one of the team, and we´ll point you in the right direction for any activity that takes your fancy. Whether you want to sustain the adrenaline of the waves dune biking in nearby Massa game park, get traditional with a camel ride, raise some sand galloping your way across Taghazout´s surrounding beaches, or soothe those out-surfed muscles with a local Moroccan argan oil massage, we’ve got it all!

There´s also the opportunity to unwind with top quality yoga instructors, who take classes for as low as £12 in local currency in some of the most panoramic spots in the area. You can stretch those aches and pains out, while the sea spray rises from Anchor point below and the Moroccan sun drops behind the horizon.

Finally, if you just want to chill, drop into the Hash Point Cafe where you can watch the Atlantic waves break over the rocks with a fragrant Tagine, some freshly caught fish, or ” if you´re feeling less adventurous ” one of the Cafe´s famous bacon double cheeseburgers. (There´s also a wealth of surf gear available for rent in the Cafe, and the manager Rachid is always happy to talk surf, food and local culture).

Accommodation

Surf Instructor Course Morocco (20)

At the surf camp you really will live and sleep by the waves. The camp duck-dives the swell all night; sitting literally on the shoreline, you will never be too far from the action, and whether you´re dusting off a tagine on our dinner-time roof terrace or chilling out with some surf vid action in our lounge, we guarantee that reassuring sound of a crashing wave will never be too far away.

Your accommodation will be shared, in apartments close to the Xtreme Gap camp, nestled in the square roofed, sun baked buildings of Taghazout, just a stone´s throw from some of Morocco´s greatest breaks.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

You can join all year round, most people join starting on Sunday until the following Sunday although not all flights match up to this from certain destinations. Checked low-cost airlines on sky scanner.net you will be surprised to find incredibly good value flights into Morocco. After booking you are free to book your flights please let us know your flight details and we will have you picked up from the airport on arrival.

Arrival and Departure

We offer a pickup service from Agadir just let us know your flight number prior to departure. If you want to make your own way, let us know in advance an estimated arrival time and we´ll be ready to check you in. If you arrive early it´s no trouble, you can surf your way through the day while we prepare your room, which should be ready by the afternoon. We also offer a taxi service which is a good idea for late arrivals, and can save you a trek through Taghazout´s labyrinthine streets at night.

On departure, we ask you leave your room by 11am so we can prepare the camp for new arrivals, but if you have a late flight, even better, just leave your stuff with us and think of it as an excuse for another day on the waves!

The currency in Morocco is a Moroccan Dirham, it is possible to exchange your pounds or euros at the airport and the nearest cash machine to the surf camp is in Agadir, so we recommend you bring enough money with you to cover your spending money as there is no ATMs located near the surf school. It is possible to take a taxi to withdraw money should you require.
Yes absolutely, Morocco is a great place to learn and are surf instructors are some of the best in the country.
NO. The reasons we encourage a week long stay with a weekend arrival and departure is so that you get the absolute maximum out of your experience. We can structure our surf lessons to suit you best, we can show you as many spots as possible, and we can take you on trips to explore the area. But it´s no problem at all if you can´t make the whole week or a weekend to weekend trip ” we are 100% flexible and we can still guarantee you´ll have an awesome time!

Full itinerary week 1

The itinerary for the 1st week is structured to make sure your first week down under is jam packed with the best activities Sydney has to offer. What´s more, accommodation and many meals are included, along with great company and dedicated expert guides for practical support and, of course, to help you milk the most out of every experience along the way.

Meet Your Mates On Monday

Straight from the plane, you drop into the Xtreme Gap base in Sydney, where you´ll meet up with all the other arrivals. For many this is the start of long friendships, that last for the duration of Gap time in Oz and beyond, so it´s super exciting to see everyone meet.

You´ll get an introductory session from your guides, who´ll let you know everything about the practicalities of being in Oz and what you can expect from the first week with us in Sydney. It´s low-key and fun, and everyone´s excited to get going, but before we do, you´ll also get all the arrival admin out the way. This is sorted by us before you get here and includes bank cards, mobile SIMs and tax numbers; all the requirements to set you up for your stay in Oz, beyond your Sydney experience.

From here it´s straight into the city, for a full and comprehensive tour of all the major sights. You´ll see all the fantastic architecture of the Sydney Harbour  from the iconic Opera House, to the formidable steel curves of the Harbour Bridge. Then, it´s on to the Royal Botanical Gardens, where the multitude of Australian fauna blooms in the shadow of the city´s looming skyscrapers.

In the night, you can unwind with a meal and a drink on us, getting to know your fellow travellers late into the Australian night.

Explore Sydney On Tuesday

After an early start, the Xtreme Gap crew give the whole group a comprehensive introduction to all the ins and outs of working and living in Australia. These guys really are in the know, with first-hand experience of Gapping in Oz, so they have all the answers for what´s what when it comes to setting up camp here.

Afterwards, the focus of Tuesday is all about adventure and exploration. We´ll take you on a Harbour cruise to show you the city sights from a whole new perspective and we´ll delve deeper into the New South Wales cityscape by adventuring to Fort Dennison (a prison-cum-lighthouse glowering over the bays downstream from the Sydney harbour), Luna Park and Watson´s Bay in Woollahra (where the sandstone cliff peninsulas jut dramatically into the ocean).

In between seeing the sights you can swim in the warm waters of the coastline that straddles the harbour, take photos, or just chill in the Sydney sun as you please.

Wildlife and Wild Land On Wednesday

Wednesday sees us get out of the metropolitan centre of Sydney and into the New South Wales wildlife. The Xtreme Gap basecamp is an area of 6 acres, covered in rich rainforest fauna and home to a myriad of very Australian critters. We set off early from town, to let you get the most of this different setting, where you´ll stay for the next three days and two nights.

Relax in the day in the company of Josie the Kangaroo, or go wildlife spotting to try and catch a glimpse of some koalas, echidnas or possums in the forest, or dolphins and whales in the nearby coastline shallows (the sea is just 5 minutes´ walk from the basecamp!).

After an evening swim watching the Aussie sun dip below the horizon, it´s pizza night at the basecamp!

Thrilling Thursday

We start Thursday with some adrenaline pumping sand boarding in the nearby dunes. We get up in the 4x4s and ride back down again, so there´s no dune here too high to conquer!

After everyone´s had their fill, it´s of for an adventure filled bush walk, guided by the Xtreme Gap crew. There´s loads of wildlife to see, and the walk ends on one of New South Wales´ best lookout spots, where there´s a chance to take photos and go Koala spotting (here, families are observable the entire year round!). Then, as the sunlight fades and night creeps in, we light the BBQ in true Aussie fashion, and chill out around the campfire into the early hours.

Party Boat Cruise on Frickin Awesome Friday

Friday´s a real high-point. The Xtreme Gap crew launch our very own boat and everyone gets up close and personal with the rich marine life of the New South Wales seas.

Aside from the bucket list beating dolphin spotting (when you´ll also have a chance to sit in the boom net while dolphins glide through the water below you), it´s also possible to spot whales in the water here.

The bonus here is that you´ll be on board your very own private boat, with just your guides and fellow gappers as company. We´re in full control of where we go, and we can explore the waters as we please; there really is no better way to experience this amazing place.

After the cruise we depart for Sydney and arrive at the highly rated WakeUp hostel. With a central location and a great selection of nightly entertainments, it´s a great way to get back into ´city mode´ and enjoy the Sydney night in style.

Shindig Saturday

While the daytime may all be about chilling and getting some hard earned rest, the night time is about donning your dresses and brushing up nice. We meet in the early evening at one of the city´s best bars, where backpackers and locals enjoy the famous Australian beers, and gear themselves up for a night on the town.

From here, we get hedonistic on the Xtreme Gap Sydney Pub Crawl. With entry and drinks at 4 bars and clubs included, you´ll experience all the facets of nightlife that has made this city so famous.

Leaving Sydney on Sunday

We’ll arrange your train journey to Tamworth, NSW where you’ll spend a night before starting your Ranch Course. Get to meet others in your group. Your accommodation is pre-arranged. The following morning, our rep will meet you at reception and take you to the farm.

Part 2: Work on a Ranch in Australia

What can you expect to be doing this second week?

Horse Riding & Handling

Learn how to ride on horseback, and gain knowledge and skills needed for general horse handling and care. Be introduced to the way of Natural Horsemanship, learn how horses think and communicate with them. Take the horses for a swim in a local swimming hole (in the warmer months).

What is Natural Horsemanship?

Natural Horsemanship mainly focuses on the horse expect of farming, with an alternative way of “controlling” the horse.

Natural Horsemanship is about learning how the horse thinks and communicating with the horse using the horses own language. It’s about creating a relationship between you and the horse where your horse does things for you because he wants to, not because he is forced to. A partnership where both parties have responsibilities to the other and from this deep trust is developed where the horse accepts you and looks to you for leadership. This allows humans to enjoy a lot better partnership with their horse.

Lassoing

The lasso is used today in rodeos as part of the competitive events, such as calf roping and team roping. It is also still used on working ranches to capture cattle or other livestock when necessary. You will learn to catch cattle with a lasso and have competitions with your fellow students.

Cattle Mustering

We’ll muster cattle from the paddocks to the yard. Assist with stock work such as drenching and tagging. A muster is the process of gathering livestock and usually involve cattle, sheep or horses, but may also include goats, camels, buffalo or other animals.

Fencing

Fencing is one of the most important pieces of farm infrastructure and our instructors will show you how to install and maintain fences. A properly installed fence will keep livestock/pets safe and secured and will keep any unwanted visitors outside the property.

Sheep Shearing

On Aussie farms, shearing is generally carried out in the spring, so sheep don’t become overheated in the summer. A long fleece is likely to become dirty and drag along the ground, decreasing the mobility of sheep. During your course, you will shear a sheep and learn about sheep health and husbandry.

Itinerary

Below is an itinerary for the current season. Currently we offer weekly departures on Saturdays departing from 7 November 2015

Note: Given the spontaneous nature of our trips, what we do each day might occasionally vary. The cost of accommodation is not included in your travel pass to allow you the flexibility to choose your own; however, en route we do recommended accommodation, which is an affordable mid-range choice. Your Tour Leader will make reservations for the group daily for accommodation and activities based on your preferences.

Mingalabar (hello) and welcome to Myanmar, Southeast Asia’s largest mainland country. Arriving in the capital city of Yangon, prepare for an intriguing mix of British colonial history and tastes from neighbouring India that distinguishes Myanmar from other Southeast Asian countries. Take some time to soak up these multicultural influences by wandering the markets and buzzing street life before meeting your Tour Leader in the early evening. Tonight you will meet your ‘travel buddies’ and prepare for the journey ahead, before heading out to local hot spot, 19th Street, to sample some tasty Burmese street food washed down with a nice cold Myanmar Beer at one of the many popular beer stations.

Fere Day Yangon
Head out after breakfast with your Tour Leader and a local guide to check out the highlights of downtown Yangon by foot. You’ll see the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar whose golden spire dominates the city skyline, and glittering Sule Pagoda, the holiest traffic island in the world. Finish off with a stroll through the endless stalls and alleyways of Bogyoke Aung San Market discovering new exotic treats. The afternoon is free to do as you please; if you’re a tea lover, you absolutely must visit a teahouse and try the tea leaf salad! Meet at the guesthouse at 7.30pm packed and ready to go for your first experience on a plush overnight coach journey to Bagan.

Arrival Bagan

Arriving early in Bagan, we will drop our bags at the guesthouse and get right into exploring the mystical Bagan Archaeological Zone. With more than 3,000 temples across this sprawling site, Bagan is a temple lover’s dream destination. A guided temple tour will highlight some of the best known temples and share stories of their intriguing history and architecture, all before lunch! Either take some time out back at the guesthouse or park up at a local beer station, where you can usually find a local who is eager to practice their English.

Free Day Bagan

Bagan temples nothing short of massive, so you need more than one day to really wander around all its wonders. Today you have a full free day to explore and we highly recommend hiring a bicycle or electric scooter to get around the town and surrounding area. Bagan is split into ‘Old Bagan’ (where you’ll be staying) and ‘New Bagan,’ about 15km apart, and you might enjoy cycling between the two, as well as taking a closer look at some of the temples and pagodas not seen on your guided tour. However you choose to spend your free day, don’t miss out on one of the world’s most spectacular sunrises or sunsets from atop a pagoda.

No accommodation, Overnight Bus.

Bagan to Kalaw

It’s an early start this morning to catch the bus to Kalaw. Watch the scenery out your window change dramatically as we travel from the open plains to the picturesque mountains of the Shan Plateau and the quaint mountain town of Kalaw. You’ll immediately sense a difference in both the cooler climate of the mountains and the general vibe of Kalaw. As a Shan town, the ethnic influence is quite different from the Burmese you already experienced and may feel more like neighbouring China, Laos and Thailand. One of the best examples of this difference is in the fresh and delicious traditional Shan cuisine, which you’ll first taste this evening after stretching your legs getting to know this charming destination.

2 Day trek Kalaw to Village stay

Soak up the native surroundings of Kalaw as we begin our trek into the Shan hills. Your guide will give you an overview of the regional ethnic groups as well as point out some of the diverse native plant and animal life along the way. On arrival into the village, get involved in preparing some traditional Shan dishes for lunch, with a helping hand from your hosts and guide. How your afternoon plays out depends on the time of year and what the villagers are working on that day. Get as interactive as you like, visit a local farm and lend a hand, join in on an English lesson at the school, or learn the ‘circus-like’ art of transporting goods in baskets on your head!

NB. By law foreigners are not allowed to stay in the homes of the local tribal people, so you will be accommodated in a nearby ethnic-guesthouse with your guide.  Otherwise by day you are free to mix and mingle.

Non-trekking option: For those who are not able or interested in joining the trek, you will spend an additional night in Kalaw (where there is lots to explore) and travel by train to Inle Lake the next day to meet the trekkers in Nyuang Shwe. Your Tour Leader, who will travel with you, will advise you of details, while a local Guide will lead the trekkers.

2 Day trek Village stay Inle Lake

Expect to wake up to a chorus of boisterous roosters at sunrise. Nothing epitomizes village life better than starting your day early and enjoying a traditional breakfast with your hosts.  As push off again, heading towards Inle, your guide will shed further light on this fascinating rural area and the ways of its people. A brief boat ride on the lake you bring you to Nyuang Shwe, a small lakeside village that serves as the main access point to the popular destination of Inle Lake. After two hearty days of trekking, you’ll be happy to put your feet up, relax and reflect on your past two days with the Shan villagers. Nyuang Shwe offers an eclectic range of interesting culinary options so wonder the streets and find a treat yourself to a tasty meal of Shan, Nepalese, Indian, Chinese, or Burmese cuisine.

Free Day Inle Lake

After breakfast we hop on our long tail boats to power through the towering reeds of the upper lake delta. Make the most of this half day tour that will take you to see floating farms held together by bamboo, a lotus weaving centre, and maybe even a floating stilt monastery. Inle Lake is a protected wetland sanctuary, so keep watch for a variety of native birds. While on the lake you will also learn how to fish like the Intha and try your luck at catching a fish or two. For lunch you can sample regional cuisine at a restaurant on the lake. The boat tour will finish around mid-afternoon, allowing time for an optional winery visit at the Red Mountain Winery.

Inle Lake to Madalay (express day)

Take in one last look over the tranquil Inle Lake before boarding the bus bound for Mandalay. There will be stops en route to stretch your legs and have lunch, but today is a day to beat the heat and relax on a comfortable bus as we transfer to our next destination. Arriving by late afternoon, there will be time to wander around the area near the guesthouse to orientate you in this incredible hub of Burmese culture and catch the sunset over the rolling Sagaing Hills.

Free Day Mandalay

Start the morning with a city tour that covers Mandalay’s highlights, such as the magnificent former Royal Palace, a gold pounders’ workshop to learn the ancient method of making gold leaf, the intricate teak wood Shewnandaw Kyuang monastery and a look at the  ‘big book’ at the Kuthodaw Pagoda. As your city tour wraps up, this also signals the end of the trip.  However, your Tour Leader will have plenty of recommendations and can help organise excursions to Mingun, Amarapura, Sagaing Hill, or tickets to the world famous Moustache Brothers performance. Wherever you’re heading next, they’ll be able to help arrange your onward transfer.

Learn & Earn As a Dive Instructor

It is a pretty good life style you have as a  Scuba Instructor and it is very rewarding too! You help people overcome their fear and make them feel really proud. Imagine having happy students around you every day. Of course the view from the office is pretty tough, usually the worlds best beach resorts, yes it is a tough life, but someone has to do it.

How do you become a    Scuba Instructor? Complete Your  Thailand IDC

If you are a complete novice in diving it will take you 7 months to train up to become a dive instructor, but is a pretty awesome 7 months. Why 7? Well the rules set out by PADI state you can not become a dive instructor until 6 months from your first open water qualification. If you have prior dive experience you can achieve this in one month

Prior to starting your IDC you will need to complete your Divemaster course. During which you will enjoy unlimited diving living on a tropical island paradise!

Most of the time the sea is your class room! And your work uniform is swimwear, the cantina is a nice Thai restaurant and your teachers are all tanned and happy to help you out becoming one of them!

Becoming A SCUBA Dive Instructor – Before you start

There are usually two types of people that think about becoming a SCUBA dive instructor. Those who already have an existing dive qualification, and others who are toying with the idea because they like the idea of a career change.

If you do not already have an existing dive qualification (open water) then it is best that you contact us first to discuss your options. It is a huge commitment becoming a SCUBA dive instructor financially, as the IDC pre-required courses do not come cheap -and that’s just the courses you also have to factor in living costs prior to starting.

There are a whole host of things that you should consider prior to starting and we are able to talk you through your options from the point of view of experience. Many of our staff hold scuba-diving instructor qualifications and have completed their IDC’s. So if you want a genuine insight into what it is like to be a diving instructor and what is required to pass exams then get in touch on e-mail.

Doing Your IDC The Process.

To become a SCUBA dive instructor and work anywhere in the world, you need to complete your instructor development course aka your IDC. The instructor development course will cover all the theory and practical modules and learning you need to undertake prior to doing your IE (instructor exam). The instructor exam is overseen by an examiner from the accrediting organisation usually PADI although it is possible to gain instructor qualifications from other agencies such as SSI. The course director who runs the instructor development course (IDC) is just responsible for getting you up to the level where you will pass your instructor exam. For this reason instructor exam fees are not usually included in the cost of IDC’s as the instructor exam fees go directly to PADI.

Prerequisites to becoming a SCUBA dive instructor

Obviously you need to be able to dive, but officially you need to have six months from the initial first SCUBA diving qualification to the dates you start your instructor exam. This means you need to gain experience which is good for the students and obviously good for you as well.

There are several qualifications you will need to go through prior to starting your SCUBA dive instructor course.

  • Open water
  • Advanced open water
  • Rescue and EFR
  • Divemaster
  • MSDT

You can then regain your OWSI or open water scuba diver instructor certification. The above are based on the PADI system and is generally interchangeable with other systems such as SSI.

The IDC

The IDC takes place in the pool, open ocean and classroom. Usually run once a month they are done in a group with a course director overseeing the training. The IDC’s are almost always followed directly by the IE and upon completion you can then start to look for a SCUBA dive instructor job.

Training & Course Break Down

Zero to Hero Dive Instructor Thailand (3)If you have no prior diving certifications you start of with your PADI open water certificate, this will take you about 4 days. After that you do your advanced open water which will take you 2 days. Then the more serious work starts and we will take you through the rescue course and your EFR. The Divemaster follows then the IDC.

  • Open Water
  • Advanced Open Water
  • Emergency First Response (First Aid)
  • Rescue Diver Certificate
  • Divemaster
  • EFR Instructor
  • Open Water Scuba Instructor Development Course (The IDC)
  • The Instructor Exams (fees not included)

Pre IDC: The Divemaster

Zero to Hero Dive Instructor Thailand (5)The first oroffessional qualification: The Divemaster. During this time you can dive as much as you want.

The Divemaster internship is where you gain most of your commercial experience in the dive industry. At this point some opt to work as a Divemaster (if a position is vacant) and this then becomes a paid position. This is not Guaranteed, but fairly realistic when spending several months training.

If you are a Divemaster you can guide dives, you can not teach people how to dive. Being a Divemaster is fun and you will be able to work in the dive industry anywhere in the world but if you want to take it one step further and have a properly paid job (Divemasters do not earn much) in the dive industry and really teach people how to dive you have to continue your course and do the instructor course!

Are The Instructor Exam Fees Included?

Zero to Hero Dive Instructor Thailand (7)No, unfortunately they are not. It is pretty expensive to become a Diving instructor, but ultimately worth it. The IDC (abbreviation for Instructor development course) includes the required training both practical and theory with a qualified course director, to get you up to the standards needed to pass the Instructor Examination. The Price of the programme covers the IDC (It also covers the accommodation and diving costs and course learning materials as well), but not the examination fees.

So please note you will need to budget at least £800 on top of the fee to Xtreme Gap to cover the extras

Think of it like learning to drive, you are paying for the lessons, and instruction. The instructor examination fee is just that, it is the fee paid to PADI to sit and mark the exams. They send out their own examiners to mark you and certify you ensuring you are up to standards. The fee is the same regardless of where you sit the exam as these are set down by PADI based in Australia.

Now in extreme cases someone may not pass the exam, so fees are never included because it is up to you to be able to pass, this means if you failed you would have to pay the exam fee again.

We say extreme cases because our Course Director Guy Corsellis, has a 100% pass rate and is one of the longest serving course directors in Thailand. He has certified well over 1000 instructors in his career.

This means it is a big investment to train as a dive instructor, with the cost of this programme and living costs involved, but it does cover you for 6 months, and because you will be living and training in Koh Tao, the worlds top location for scuba certifications, it gives you plenty of time to network and get to know the dive school owners (there are 38 there) , so it is easier to snag the instructor jobs available when they become available.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

There are some extra costs not included in the price you pay us, these are fees that are payable direct to PADI to sit your exams. At the time of writing they are (in Australian Dollars):

The IE will now cost 865 AUD$ , the IDC application fee 249 AUD$ and the EFRI application fee will cost 172 AUD$ , all together adding up to 1286 AUD$.

Please note this figure is a guide and can change (it is set by PADI not Xtreme).

Yes, the Koh Tao course is adaptable. Eg. we can shorten your trip if you have existing qualifications when you start your Koh Tao  IDC  instructor course. However remember you need to have at least 6 months gap between gaining your first diving qualification (Open Water) and becoming a Dive Instructor.

To train on the Koh Tao diving course you will need to fill in a medical statement and pass a medical exam. You will definitely notice that your fitness levels improve significantly as you advance through the Koh Tao Divemaster course. Bear in mind you will be swimming for up to 4 hours, this has a great impact on your fitness and health. However before beginning the course you need to be reasonably fit and healthy. You will also need to pass a PADI instructor swim www.

20 to 25 pounds a day should be enough for a great gap year. If you are not the drinking type and you like more quiet nights you could do it for 15 pounds. During the day you will only spend some money on food and water, and trust me, that is cheap!

The rooms are spacious and clean and have a nice balcony. Every room has 2 single beds, a TV and an en suite bathroom. If you want your own room during your gap year diving, there is an option for your own room for 75 euro extra a month.

The resort is part of the dive school. There is a reception, bar, restaurant with Thai and Western food, a big pool with sun beds pool, friendly reception, spacious rooms, and internet. The resort is a 2 minute walk from the beach, the bars and the restaurants.

You do not need experience. But you do need to be able to swim, not excellent, but you need to be able to swim around the dive boat. The diving in Thailand programme of Xtreme Gap gives you plenty of time, more than most programmes. But please do realize it is a big commitment so make sure you really want to do it.

We have arranged that your transfer tickets are ready at the desk of the hotel in Bangkok. The night after arriving you will get on a overnight bus and then in the morning a few hours on the boat. Also the pick up from the pier on Koh Tao on your day of arrival is included. The island is 21 square KM, and the resort is a 2 minute walk from the beach and all restaurants. So once you are on Koh Tao everything can be done by foot.

Thailand is great for a gap year because the weather is always nice. Maybe except October and November, than it is rainy season. The rest of the year it is hot and sunny! And even in the rainy season you will have lots of sunshine and hot weather.

Yes. We do never know exactly how many, but there is always an average of 5 to 12 travellers from Xtreme Gap.

Not all gap year travellers will be doing the Thailand dive programme. There are also options to do Martial arts on Koh Tao, Yoga, Free diving and rock climbing. For more gap year Thailand ideas please check our site. Everyone will stay in the same resort.

Yes. Xtreme Gap has a rep on the island that will be there for all gap year travellers. The rep will pick you up from the pier, show you around, take you out for dinner, introduce you to other gap year takers and will be there for you 24/7. Then you will also be working with your dive instructor daily. We also have an emergency number.

You can buy anything you need on Koh Tao, and it is much cheaper than back home, so pack light! The shops are all close to the resort. You can buy souvenirs, sun lotion, mosquito repellent, swim shorts, flip flops and everything else you might need.

If you are from the UK you can book gap year travel insurance online on the Xtreme Gap website. You would need the backpacker option and then the upgrade since you will be diving up to 30 meters deep during your gap year. We have chosen to work with this company since they are good value and cover the necessary diving and sports options Xtreme Gap has for gap years.

One of the benefits of booking your trip on Koh Tao with Xtreme Gap Year is not only do you get to do this awesome activity, but you will become part of the Xtreme gap family on Koh Tao. We will pick you up from the pier and give you a warm welcome at our stunning resort. On your first night our resident representative will take you out for a gorgeous Thai meal annual get to know all of the other members of the group. When you are booking a trip with us it is not just about the activity so please bear this in mind if you are comparing prices to other companies. No other company has such a big presence in Koh Tao, runs groups of like-minded travellers so booking a trip with us is as much about the friends you make as well as the experiences you will have.

The first thing we should mention is rules do change very frequently in Thailand, so this is just a guideline and you need to take responsibility for checking the accuracy. Having said that this is a question we are asked often and this is the current advice we are giving regarding visas.

Before you travel to Thailand you will need a double entry 60 day tourist VISA. This will enable you to get 60 days when you  first enter Thailand which can be extended by 30 days in Koh Samui either personally or we can send yourpassport over to our representative and they´ll do it for a fee, then at the end of that 30 days you will have to do a visa run and going over to Burma.

This is the closest place to do a VISA run, which takes place overnight you leave in the evening and you are back on Koh Tao the following morning. When you re-enter Thailand you will get the second 60 day visa activated. Once this is nearly expired this can once again be can be extended by 30 days in Samui.

This takes you to 6 months. If you are on the seven month course you will still need an additional month which requires you to do one final VISA run.

Some people from certain countries do now get 30 day tourist visas when they enter Thailand over a land boarder, the UK is one of these, but Ireland isn´t. The list of countries which now get 30 day visas when they cross a land border is;

  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • UK
  • United States.

So if you are from any of the above countries you are able to do one additional VISA run to complete the trip, if you are from other countries you may need to do to visa runs, please check with the course director to ensure that your visa runs do not interfere with the timing of the final instructor exam.

A Week You Will Never Forget

The itinerary is structured to make sure your first week down under is jam packed with the best activities Sydney has to offer. What´s more, accommodation and many meals are included, along with great company and dedicated expert guides for practical support and, of course, to help you milk the most out of every experience along the way.

Meet Your Mates On Monday

Work Up Australia (46)Straight from the plane, you drop into the Xtreme Gap base in Sydney, where you´ll meet up with all the other arrivals.

Work Up Australia (33)After an early start, the Xtreme Gap crew give the whole group a comprehensive introduction to all the ins and outs of working and living in Australia.

Work Up Australia (36)Wednesday sees us get out of the metropolitan centre of Sydney and into the New South Wales wildlife.

Xtreme Sydney Connexion (3)We start Thursday with some adrenaline pumping sand boarding in the nearby dunes.
Then, as the sunlight fades and night creeps in, we light the BBQ in true Aussie fashion, and chill out around the camp fire into the early hours.

LVY-jnF1ZSj6c3XHXP_ZtdTpSPcdEWtFS3pOnCDDLqoThe bonus here is that you´ll be on board your very own private boat during the party cruise, with just your guides and fellow gappers as company.

While the day time may all be about chilling and getting some hard earned rest, the night time is about donning your dresses and brushing up nice.

Slow down, Surf’s up Sunday

Where better than to coax away those hangovers and unwind than the soft-sanded white beaches of Sydney? On Sunday we´ll

BDLfgE7SolUpMDdHPm7l3tkXWGI6M2jomuaCvH4VsM8,sOpVnU7B92ka3X9YME-8YzTip2NgUSgWDVrKT2UE7kU

transverse some of the most famous coastline in the Area, visiting six along the way. From the wide yellow stretches of Coogee, to the famous surf-swells of Bondi, this is among the most coveted beach territory in the world, and today it´s all yours!

Most people opt to start their Oz travels between October and March, as this is when you´ll get the best weather, and Sydney really is fantastic at this time of year. That said, there´s something to be seen here all year round, and the Xtreme Gap Sydney arrival package is a no-holes-barred, full-frills introduction to Gap Years in Oz, with the added bonus of a great bunch of like-minded travellers and fun-hungry tour guides ready and waiting for you in one of the country´s most endearing of cities.

The wakeup hostel is an awesome place to be located as everything is on your doorstep including our team who have their offices based directly in front of where you’ll be staying.

That means you can pop in there at any stage, access their free Internet (kind of handy in Australia is everywhere tends to charge you) but also you’ll be staying in one of the swankiest hostels in Australia.

There are loads of facilities available at the wakeup hostel, good chill out areas, comfy beds and safe and secure rooms. Is also slap bang in the middle of backpacker district, which means it’s really social, and everything is on your doorstep.

We are often asked if it is possible to get a job prior to arriving in Australia, and the simple answer to this is no. Yes absolutely, it’s quite easy to set up a bank account by mobile phone Sim card and arrange all the essentials yourself, however this does take quite some time to arrange, as you physically have to visit banks and do all the organising yourself. The beauty of this trip is that we take all the hassle out of arranging all staff meaning you can devote your first week in Sydney to just having fun making friends and kick starting your trip in the best way possible. The other majorly cool thing about this is the friends that you make, everyone is in the same boat and often lifelong friendships are formed in this first week, it’s not uncommon for people to end up travelling with other members of the group and the feedback we get from our previous groups shows that this is much more fun than just turning up in Sydney and doing your own thing.

On average people book six months ahead because it gives them peace of mind that their places secured on this unrivalled job finding service.

Where can I go in Australia?

Anywhere you want!  Although after your first week in Sydney you may want to hang around for a bit as it is an amazing city you don’t have to do.  Are so many places to visit in Australia, and loads of jobs all over the place.  Where takes your fancy you can head there knowing that you have the full backup and support of our jobs team to help find you a job at a moments notice.

How long do I have to stay in Australia?

The working holiday Visa is valid for one year from the point of entry.  You do not have to stay for one year however.  In fact there is no minimum amount of time.  There are some restrictions, you are not allowed to work for one employer for more than three months.  If you want to stay for two years you can do that but you need to do agricultural work for a minimum of three months.
