THE IDC – The PADI Instructor Development Course

The IDC (Instructor Development course) refers to the intensive period of training that takes place before the Instructor Exams (IE). The IDC is overseen by a PADI Course director and is made up of 2 parts.

PADI IDC – Instructor Development Course

The PADI instructor Development Course is made up of two main parts the Assistant Instructor Course (AI) and the Open Water Scuba Instructor Course (OWSI). With your Course Director’s agreement and in completing the AI and OWSI courses to the required standard gains you entry into the PADI Instructor Examination (IE).

The Courses

AI Course Requirements

  • More than 18 years old and certified to PADI Divemaster or equivalent
  • Complete independent study Knowledge Reviews before the course
  • Recommended 40 hours over minimum of 3 days (normally this course is over 4 days)
  • Attend the 6 curriculum session after the Orientation
  • Conduct a minimum of 2 Confined Water (CW) presentations
  • Conduct a minimum of 2 Knowledge Development presentations
  • Conduct a minimum of 1 Open Water (OP) presentation integrating 2 skills
  • At least one presentation must meet the minimum scores outlined below
  • Achieve a minimum score of 3.4. in a Confined Water Presentation (CW)
  • Achieve a minimum score of 3.5 Knowledge Development Presentation (KD)
  • Achieve a minimum score of 3.5 Open Water Presentation (OW)
  • Participate in 1 Open Water training sessions
  • Pass the 5 dive theory exams (physics, physiology, RDP, Skills and Environment and Equipment with a score of 75% or higher
  • Earn 68 points overall with no score lower than 3.0 on the 20 Skill Evaluation Circuit

OWSI Course Requirements

  • 18 years old and certified to PADI Assistant Instructor or equivalent
  • Complete independent study Knowledge Reviews before the course begins
  • Recommended 50 hours over minimum of 4 days (normally this course is over 6 days)
  • Attend 13 curriculum sessions after the Orientation
  • Conduct a minimum of 2 Confined Water (CW) presentations
  • Conduct a minimum of 2 Knowledge Development presentations
  • Conduct a minimum of 1 Open Water (OP) presentation integrating 2 skills
  • At least one presentation must meet the minimum scores outlined below
  • Achieve a minimum score of 3.4. in a Confined Water Presentation (CW)
  • Achieve a minimum score of 3.5 Knowledge Development Presentation (KD)
  • Achieve a minimum score of 3.5 Open Water Presentation (OW)
  • Participate in the Adventure Diver and Rescue Diver course workshops
  • Participate in 3 Open Water training sessions
  • Pass the 5 dive theory exams (physics, physiology, RDP, Skills and Environment and Equipment with a score of 75% or higher
  • Earn 68 points overall with no score lower than 3.0 on the 20 Skill Evaluation Circuit
  • 800m swim

As you can tell there is a lot to think about and achieve on the IDC, but our course director know their stuff, and the pass rate so far for Xtreme Gappers is 100%.
