How Much Money Do I Need To Travel?

How much money do I need to take travelling? The classic question for anyone planning a gap year. There is actually no definitive answer because it depends entirely on you, your tastes, desires and where in the world you go. One thing is for sure though, the question should not be How much money do I need to take travelling, but more like how can i take more!

The Golden Rule.

You will always spend more than you anticipated because the simple truth is there is so much out there to tempt you. The best way to deal with this is to plan you gap year budget and try to stick to it. This not only involves working out how much things costs in each destination, but also adding in some margin of overspend, to help with the little treats along the way.

We can actually help you here.

Xtreme Gap is a not a huge travel organisation, we are a travel company set up by enthusiastic travellers with a lot of travel experience between us. We have been in the same postion as you many times over, planning a huge trip, and consquently also had to plan out our gap year budgets. You can learn more about some of our key people in the About us section, including where we have travelled too and our specialities. Becuase we have travelled we can realistically advise you on travel budget planning.

Booking your big expenses up front helps.

Many of our programmes help you to budget because most of your significant expenses are taken care of in your payment to us for your programme, this would be things like Accommodation, Activities, Transfers and in many cases food as well.

That means before you are even in country most of your travel is paid for and you are not going to have to worry about running out of cash in the middle of Nairobi at 4:59 on bank holiday Friday afternoon with no where to stay. (Yup – I have done that before, and I had to sleep in a £2 per night dirt pit hotel (and brothel) until I could get to a bank on Tuesday).

However even if you do book alot up front there will be other expenses like flights and spending money.

So how do you work out how much you will need?

So if you have covered the fundamentals, ie accommodation and activities and logistics, you are then looking at working out what your spending money should be. Our best advise is be realistic. If you like to drink. Alot. Then account for a few big nights out. How much do beers cost in each country? Depends where you drink them of course, but if you need to know, ask us!

You may want to get a job

Some other key things to take into account:

  1. What will your main expenses be each day?
  2. How long will you be travelling for?
  3. Do you intend on working while you travel (see our work and travel section)?
  4. Are there laws requiring a minimum amount of available funds for the country you are visiting – Australia being one when entering on A working holiday visa?
  5. What is the exchange rate between your home currency and the country you are visiting?

Stay longer in Cheaper Countries and less time in western countries…

Stands to reason if a country is more developed, the costs will be a lot more expensive, unless of course you are working and you accommodation is included. Programmes like the whitsundays sailing course are ideal if you are looking for this kind of set up, so is the Outback ranch training programme, as most farm jobs include accommodation. Click here to see some work and travel options.

The work and travel programmes can be a fairly expensive out lay at the beginning, but the beauty of them is that they will eventually pay back the cost of the course, and give you means to travel further and longer.  We say can be expensive, because our Bronze Work up in Sydney programme starts at £279, which is actually incredibly cheap!

Cash Money Ho!

Finally..

Working out how much money you need to travel is not an exact science, so it is best to talk to someone who has been to the country (or countries if you are wondering how much money you need to travel the world) who can give you their opinion based on experience and your own personal travel style. Fortunately we have been to all out destinations, so get on Skype, and we will be very happy to give you a few pointers.
