One of the main questions we are asked before people hear of on their Thailand Gap Year is How Much Money Do I Need To Take When Backpacking In Thailand?
The answer is different for every individual but basically it boils down to a few key factors:
This is the number one factor when it comes to blowing your budget. Alchol is not that expensive compared to the UK for instance, but the quantities you consume will make up for it! A bottle of beer costs 70 baht, a little over a pound at the current exchange rates, but becuase it is cheaper, you end up drinking more!
On a night out it is quite easy to blow 1000 Baht (in GBP) or even 2000 on a big night out. But if you are careful you can spend much less. The trick is to not give into temptation and go out an party every night (easier said than done when you come up against Koh Taos wicked beach bars)
If you are doing something active like the Muay Thai Training in Thailand programme, you have more of an incentive not to party all the time Limiting your self to a couple of times per week.
For the really budget concious, you can always buy beers in a shop (20baht – 35p) and have them at the resort or go for some rice wine (7p) and get blind drunk in the process.
Thai food is delicious, and it is cheap! 30p per meal. Yes please. Or you can go out for a Pizza and pay £5. You do the maths on that one.
If you are planning on doing a Diving course in Koh Tao, and have not booked it up from then that has to come out of your daily budget. We recommend a budget of £20 per day, so that is almost 15 days worth of budget alone if you book when you are out there, that does not include the accommodation either, so it is better to book these parts ahead, then you can budget more easily.
