Si Pha Don and Don Det (4000 islands and the Island of Det)
Most people know little about Laos, but this does not mean they should over look visiting there. It is a stunning place and a really intimate snapshot of south east asia. Our backpacking in Laos programme takes you on a journey of discovery through this beautiful country.
This idyllic, slow and relaxing island of Don Det is situated in Si Pha Don (4000 Islands), Mekong Delta at the south end of Laos, just north of the Cambodian border (just up the road from these waterfalls ).
Apart from the laid back charm of the lazy village lifestyle there are ruins of an old French railway on the nearby island of Don Khon, which you can reach by foot or the more favoured transport method of bicycle. Some really popular activities to do down here are the fishing trips which will have you lazily watching the sun set on your own island eating fresh fish as well as the chance to see one of the rarest animals in the world the Irrawaddy river dolphin (best time for this is between November and April when the Mekong is at its lowest).
If you don’t want to get out on the river then you can walk or hire a bicycle to ride around the islands. Don Det can be ridden around in about 20 min non stop but take your time to check out the more local parts of the island where you may find children playing around and wanting to show you a snake they have caught! The best places to ride to however are the Li Phi falls on the South West corner of Don Khon, impressive in the dry season and epic in the wet season. The old French railroad is situated on the north eastern side of the Don Khon.
If you can’t get on a dolphin spotting boat trip then you may want to have a look at the Kong Ngay look out point on the western tip of the island for some impromptu dolphin watching.
